Good Evening ladies and gents. So, this is my second attempt at the Wrath of Khan attack. The first time around, I was a lot newer and didn't know that many techniques. (I'm still learning of course). But seeing I've gotten a bit better in the last 4 years, I figured Id make another attempt at this scene. (Not to mention after seeing the first version...I kinda see why I got the comments I did lol). I've made some changes to the first attempt. Such as having the initial phaser beam go straight through the secondary hull. I did that because in the diagram of damage the Enterprise sustained, there were indicators showing they were hit on that side also, not to mention its shown to have damage on that side in The Search of Spock, and seeing we've never seen how that damage appeared, I came up with this method. I know it wouldn't cause scorching on the hull but, eh, I just went with it lol) I also changed up some of the original angles and added more shots, such as her just drifting in space. (I also have her drifting in space). Along with changing the "static view screen glitch". So, lets see if I've improved. Of course I'm not looking for "perfect", just better than version one. As always, enjoy :)
Really good work here, the speed of the ships, the flexible emitter of the tactical pylon phasers, the shot going through the hull and the adrift look and debris field the big E has. All great!
I can appreciate what you were doing here, but this doesn't make sense. If the phaser beam penetrated both ends of the outer and inner hull, and went through the secondary hull at that location, then the warp core and engine room would have been destroyed, and Scotty, along with everyone else in engineering would be dead. They would have died from the decompression alone if Reliant's phaser beam didn't kill them. Further, I'm not sure how the integrity of the intermix chamber could hold against a phaser beam like that. It's entirely possible that the whole ship would have been obliterated by a massive anti-mater explosion, that likely would have destroyed the Reliant as well. If not, at least severely damaged her. But the chances of a phaser beam penetrating both sides of the Enterprise's hull on the first shot is negligible. Given the allotted time from the original theatrical clip, I think the more likely explanation for the phaser burns on the Enterprise's starboard side secondary hull is that Reliant ported around the Enterprise's aft to emerge on her starboard side, and fired a second shot. We don't see this happen in the film because at this point, we're watching fires, sparks and the running of panicked cadets on the Enterprise's interior. But we see shakes and hear additional explosions. This is likely sounds of the hull being impacted because the Reliant was hitting the Enterprise again, but from the opposite side. This would also explain the two hits the Enterprise primary hull took that we see on the damage control panel Kirk and Spock were examining. But by this time Spock and Kirk were assessing the damage, the Reliant had already completed it's loop past the Enterprise's bow, and was maneuvering to line up it's rear torpedo tubes. All together, the Reliant struck the Enterprise with 4 separate phaser shots, and one torpedo before Khan called the Enterprise to surrender. Despite the fact that in the theatrical film, we only see one phaser shot, and the one torpedo hit.
The following scenes and later shots of the Enterprise in Star Trek III make it obvious that the phaser shots went through the hull, but they never actually showed that happening. This render shows it clearly, which is very shocking and a nice detail.
The ship going off kilter during the attack. That attention to detail was not part of the storyboard and I always wondered why. Well played sir, especially the phaser damage on the stardrive!
Nice touch matching the secondary damage effect on the starboard side of the secondary hull. It matches the damage on the damage report display. I also like the debris field around the Enterprise.
well it definately was on the inside with the lights and fires on board so he's making it look more realistic then the original made it look by those little details
I've seen the attack on the Enterprise probably a hundred times or more and this is the first time (be it the actual film or a fan made video) that the opening broadside caused me to cringe--not because it was poorly done--but because this really sells how badly this attack damaged the Enterprise. I love the fact that she starts drifting and you can see things flickering because of the power issues. And that shot following the torpedo was great. Well done.
That was really cool, and a LOT of fun to watch. I especially love how the first phaser blast goes straight through the Enterprise hull, and then you see it venting gas and debris out both sides. Nicely done!
Love the way the Enterprise tilt angle increases and the bits of space debris around it as it's being fired upon. And awesome how the phaser shots through engineering go right through the ship! This explains alot about the damage, as you stated in your post. Well done! Excited for more!
Absolutely masterful! The Reliant's phasers going through the hull is actually keeping with a detail that few know in that The Miranda class had phasers (the ones mounted on the "roll bar") that were powered directly off the warp grid. They didn't just draw warp power to use...they were run directly by them. That's why he lost the phasers when he lost warp drive. An unshielded ship would have had a hole cooked straight through her with that kind of power. If Khan would have aimed a little higher, he'd have sawed the saucer section right off with those phasers.
I thought the "rollbar" phasers on a Miranda were PULSE phasers--more powerful than the dual phasers found on the saucer section. I also think the Miranda class were more "TACTICAL" Federation ships than the Constitution ships so they would defend the REGULA space station if attacked. Oh well...
@@kingsman8475 Yes, but in the Enterprise, the phasers were fired from the phaser banks which were charged by the warp drive. In the Miranda Class, IIRC, the phasers were powered directly by the warp core, not through phaser banks. It would explain why they were powerful enough to burn right through the hull and why Reliant lost them completely when they lost the warp drive.
@meme9492 The Enterprise had lost their warp drive, too, and could only muster ' a few shots' from their batteries. I'm not sure about the deleniation between the banks and turrets. The dual phaser banks on a constitution starship are actually turrets if you look close enough.
Love the way you emphasized how crippled the Enterprise was after each phaser blast and that torpedo. The use of small explosions showed just how precarious their position was without their shields up.
I love how the saucer lights and deflector dish flicker like the Enterprise is trying to stay conscious after the sucker punch, kinda shaking it off the best it can. Nice job! Very nice job! 💯🔥
Nostalgia... you brought me to a tear watching this scene again after a long time. I was just a kid in elementary school when I first saw this movie and it was one of the movies that solidified my interest in Star Trek.
Well done. I particularly like the way you captured the Enterprise being completely dislodged from her center of gravity. Your depiction of the Enterprise after the phaser blows adds an entirely new dimension to the scene where we previously only see the ships axes from the instruments, now we see that in real-time and space. Great work!!
Nicely done. The Enterprise drifting helplessly and the cloud of debris following her just hits home how bad the situation was for them. I like to imagine how much more you could have done with added time and resources.
Great work! The debris field after the attack and the drift appearance of a badly damaged Enterprise. Plus the video disruption on screen to enhance the damage. Great imagination to detail. 👍🖖
I like the added ship action cinematography. You've added more excitement and chaos to an already chaotic scene just with your ship movements interspersed with the original character scenes throughout this attack sequence. The additional work brings the space terror aspect of this movie to a new level. The ships are just as much characters as the actors and you have a good start at giving these ships their due. I remember seeing this in the theater when it first came out.... then again in the theater with a Q/A by Shatner himself just a few years ago.
It's a fun reworking of the scene with some dynamic movement that the 1982 models simply couldn't deliver, but as "realistic" as the floaty movements of the ships may be, it comes at the cost of the sense of mass. Yes, there wouldn't be any real weight without the effects of gravity, but the trick with visual storytelling is to make it feel right to our subconscious minds whether it actually is right or not. Space in Star Trek is equivalent to the open sea thanks in large part to the influence of the Horatio Hornblower novels on both Gene Roddenberry and Nicholas Meyer.
I don't know if this was done intentionally, but I love the way you had the Enterprise tilt TOWARD the Reliant after the first volley, which matches the tilt shown on the bridge.
And now we know darn good and well why the emergency section door in the engine room came down, and why Scotty's nephew Peter Preston briefly lost hearing. That section of the engine room probably lost air pressure completely, by that I mean the part that was cut open buy the phaser blast from reliant.
Reliant's phasor fire really felt more devastating than in the original film. That made the damage assessment scene more impactful as well. Very nicely done!
Nice work. I like the new angles you chose when the Enterprise got hit. My one suggestion would be for you to slow down the movements of both ships. They jet around too quickly. Remember that the director wanted the battle to be like two Submarines fighting underwater (or two lumbering wooden battleships facing off). And submarines do not move very quickly. If you could slow down the movement by 50%... I think it would be great. But otherwise I think you did a good job. Keep it up.
For some context on realistic maneuvering: The 1701-A ostensibly is 950 feet long and masses 190K tons... The real CVN-65 Enterprise is 1100 feet long and displaces 95K tons. Its upcoming Ford-class replacement will displace 115K tons. Obviously something something inertial dampers, but yeah, it's the size of an aircraft carrier and twice the mass.
This is my personal favorite Star Trek movie, and you made this,my favorite video clip even better. I would like to see the rest of TWOK in the format you did. In other words: mind blown 🤯🤯🤯
Sometimes we start a project but won’t have the skills and experience to actually finish it for years later. Thanks for finishing the project, older, wiser.
Loved the scene where we see the torpedo hit the Enterprise. Also, the added detail of having the view screen glitch occasionally. Really added to the severity of the damage they sustained. Excellent work, as always!
I also greatly appreciate the overall movement of the Enterprise as it is attacked. This puts this scene at a whole different level even after all of these years after it was released.
Just notice somethings: The first hacking in scifi lol, loved the acting by the extras of the ships in chaos and the emegrency procedures of the gas masks. Whish they kept more of that in later movies and shows. Last loved the shot from tng with the reliant over the OG enterprise instead of TNG enterprise at the end
Your innovations honor the original. I won't lie -- modern movies have teams of hundreds of cg techs (that list is staggeringly long in the closing credits) to refine every shot, so I do think there's more to do. Still, it's a cool draft.
1:15 Wow, now i see how the Reliant managed to damage the Enterprise, the Phaser Bank rotated, alway thought the Phaser Banks on the MIranda Class always pointed front
Love all of the ship movements in this version, especially at 7:43 when the Enterprise phasers hit the Reliant's impulse crystal with resulting damage and the bow of the Reliant tilts upward. Wish the ship scenes could have lingered a bit longer, but that's just me. Good work all around!
You took this scene and improved it in a way that both kept it true to the original scene, and added depth and detail that I'd argue improved audience immersion. Not many can claim they've done the same. Well done!
As a Star Trek fan from the very beginning, I know the good old films almost by heart and this remaster of these scenes is really great. Hats off and LLAP
This was a masterful recreation of one of the greatest science fiction action scenes in Science Fiction history. What made Star Trek 2 Wrath of Khan so good? This tense moment by moment drama to an epic space battle has really not been equalled in Sci Fi history. You, sir, were able to maintain that emotion and drama with modern computer programming, but considering how good the effects were in 1982 in this film, it is really hard to beat. Awesome job.
1:27 to 1:40 was an absolute delight. It accentuated the sense of urgency as it quick cuts from engineering to the Enterprise being attacked and eventually listing while the red alert blares along with explosions and debris.
Wow just wow, love it, especially the little touches such as (Reliant's phaser cannon rotating to lock, phaser going thru the starboard hull, venting of debris and gas, the photon torpedo impact on Enterprise, somehow previously I always thought it hit the top of the hull hence why bridge went in flames, but then the battle damage does show underneath). Just outstanding, you never fail in your projects
I really like how your ships move in all of your videos! Really good work. I don't know the technical term for the way the skin of the ship's hulls look, but at times they still appear a little primitive--very old school cgi lacking detail. That said your work is nearly perfect and your sense of timing and three dimensional blocking is wonderful. Thank you for your videos!
The original's shots were a product of their time, of course. Back then the best computer graphics could muster was compositing work, much of the effects had to be done with practical models, and doing everything that would likely happen if the engineering section was hit without shields up would likely have made the accountants at Paramount very unhappy. It really speaks to both how far modern 3D animation has come and to the talent of QD that we're seeing things like secondary explosions in engineering (matching the bangs and booms heard on the bridge), the cloud of gas, dust, and debris around the _Enterprise_ that is drifting because her propulsion systems are knocked out. Then there's the counterattack animation perfectly matching Joachim's lines, "They've damaged the photon [torpedo] controls and the warp drive!" You shouldn't see anything dramatic happen with a severed control circuit, but the warp drive getting knocked out? That's a very cool effect.
This is very immersive given the challenges you face. Imagine what you could do with a full graphics toolkit or those with one! Well done! I especially like the view screen effects due to fluctuating power on board the Enterprise. Its details like that which make your work shine!
That scene where the Reliant's phaser fire went through to the starboard side of the Enterprise's secondary hull might explain where the damage on that side might have come from that was seen in The Search for Spock.
No if that happened the ship would of had exploded from the inside out everthing would of been sucked out the explosion would of worked its way right up the strong back into the magnatomic intermix chamber at the top of the sauser and kaboom.
Then why wasn't the starboard torpedo room not destroyed like the port one was when the enterprise was hit the second time in the nebula? Obviously it wasn't since the enterprise was able to torpedo the reliant and destroy its port nacelle. There was no damage to the starboard airlock and torpedo Bay
I love all your notes and of course the added CGI is amazing. I had noticed the screen glitch you added before reading the desc. and was happy to see you noted it. I re-watch this movie every so often… and a Search for Spock and Voyage Home. True masterpieces imo. I just recently finished re-watching them as a matter of fact, so this is great timing for me. The films themselves are dated of course…, but when fans with skills like yours do stuff like this… well, the limits are as endless as space itself. PS - Any plans to do the final battle (ie Khan v Kirk round 2)… or scenes from the other films?
I loved the little bits of artistic license that you took here and there. The phaser beam punching all the way THROUGH the Enterprises secondary hull. The debris cloud. The little phaser “ball” turret on the Reliant. Very cool!
Great phaser and torpedo work! The flying debris is awesome. I don't think white is a good color for the engineers' uniforms; what a laundry nightmare. And why does Kirk have to suggest using auxiliary power to the chief engineer, and then Scotty acts like, oh, that's an idea I hadn't thought of? Though completely different, The Wrath of Khan and The Wizard of Oz are my favorite films of all time. I'm sure Montalban has a nearly everything to do with its success. Makes me want a Chrysler Cordoba with Corinthian leather now.
The Enterprise outgassing and adrift after getting gut-shot was something I have been wanting to see for a while now. Even lights flickering to indicate disrupted power throughout the ship! Nicely done. They would probably stay off near the most heavily damaged sections. Why the ship listed to port after clearly trying to turn to starboard after realizing Reliant was hostile is something that has nagged me for a while. (I always thought a gout of unbalanced thrust from the impulse engines might have done it) Your take on it is pretty good. Well done.
Constructive Criticism: The ships are still too shiny & white at times. The hulls, nessels, & saucers lack metal-plate texturing. The lack of textured details makes them look artificial.
🖖😎👍Very cool and very nicely well done and very well executed in every detail way shape and form and with keeping to the actual film and then adding your own little special features to it, And the debris field from damages done from the phaser blasts was very great looking,A job very nicely well done and executed indeed Sir!,👌.
I recall your first go at this, and I must say-you have certainly redeemed yourself. Though your first attempt, from an amateur perspective was good, this was great. The floating debris, and the way that one phaser shot went clear through Enterprise was fantastic! You should be proud, very proud!
1:39 I’ve seen this scene a hundred times. This very brief moment…hit differently. This was creepy/scary/awesome in a way the scene had never been and I cant explain way. Well done!
I gasped the moment the Reliant phaser sliced through the Enterprise fuselage because of its SHEER FUCKING AWESOMENESS !!!! Hope to see more of your VFX, maybe the Mutara Nebula final battle? Excellent work. You made this old Trekkie’s day.
My favourite part about what you did was significantly increase the amount of floating debris around the damaged ship. It reminded me a lot more that the ship had taken heavy damage than just seeing the burn marks on the hull. I wish I could see your first attempt so I could comment on how far you've come.
As a fellow Star Trek fan, I thoroughly appreciate what you’ve achieved. The action, detail, and timing are all impeccable. That said, if you’ll indulge some constructive criticism, your lighting is way off. Space is dark. Ships must self-illuminate. Light and shadow are cast in particular ways that are well established for sci-fi. Specifically, you cannot light the scene like the sun is shining overhead. The more generic your light source, the more basic and unrealistic you models will look. I promise you, if you re-light the scene where only the ships and weapons emit and reflect light, your existing work re-rendered will look better by several orders of magnitude. Fair warning: your rendering time will go way up too, but it will be worth it as the final product compared to this will be (and I almost mean this literally) like night and day. In any case, bravo on what you’ve created. Live long and prosper. 🖖
If you want a light source for everything, you need to assume a local star off camera at a point off camera. It's at 2 astronomical units away and has a black body radiation of about 3000 Kelvin. Shadows and shading should be visible but not distracting. The phasers should be bright blue. The phasers fired by Enterprise should look a little weak, starting as a bright blue fading as they are fired, Enterprise can barely power them. The deflector dish in the front of the Enterprise secondary hull, starved of power, should only have weak shine in the center. The impulse engines on Enterprise should not be red but more a dark red with maybe a small bit of surging. During the initial attack, Enterprise's running lights and some of the window lights should go out. That would enhance it a bit. Overall I'll give you a 94 out of 100 for the effects. 100 out of 100 for your directing.
It certain looks quite realistic, albeit the hull breaches still look a bit out of place, being just black clots. But otherwise very nice, even the floating debris and the uncontrollable Enterprise drifting.
I like that you kept the debris with the Enterprise; that just doesn't disappear as is often thought, unless the ship were to move away from the debris which it couldn't because it was practically dead in space.
As someone who grew up watching this movie and having the last name of Kirk; This video makes me want to say from my very core: Khaaaaaaaaan!!! Well done mate. This was intense!
Well done! It was good to see details added like the damage debris cloud floating around Enterprise. She was hit hard by that first attack. It would have been nice to see a bit of debris floating around Reliant as she retreated, by hey, I love to nit-pick! Beautiful work!

What can I say, congratulations on a job well done. It is worth a second look.
I love how much more realistic your phase hits are as compared to the movie. Nice job!👏
Very nicely done, the attention to details sets this above and beyond most recreations of this scene!
Really good work here, the speed of the ships, the flexible emitter of the tactical pylon phasers, the shot going through the hull and the adrift look and debris field the big E has. All great!

The on screen damage reports showed that the beams went through in the best way they could have in the 80's, not many people caught it

Nah the quality difference is crap

This is my personal favorite Star Trek movie, and you made this,my favorite video clip even better.
I would like to see the rest of TWOK in the format you did.
In other words: mind blown 🤯🤯🤯
Sometimes we start a project but won’t have the skills and experience to actually finish it for years later.
Thanks for finishing the project, older, wiser.
I love how the phaser rotates to track the target and all the debris that surrounds the ship
To watch your skills grow has been so rewarding over the last years, but man, this is a grand leap. An opus.
Love that the Enterprise has a more crippled posture in space. Great work!
Loved the scene where we see the torpedo hit the Enterprise. Also, the added detail of having the view screen glitch occasionally. Really added to the severity of the damage they sustained. Excellent work, as always!
Phenomenal !!!! As a life long Star Trek fan this scene was the best that I've seen as a recreation from TWOK, good job !!!!
Not to be that typa guy but how did you think the Miranda fired while the target was behind or something?
I love the phaser passing through the hull briefly and the drifting after the first pass. Well done.
Love all of the ship movements in this version, especially at 7:43 when the Enterprise phasers hit the Reliant's impulse crystal with resulting damage and the bow of the Reliant tilts upward. Wish the ship scenes could have lingered a bit longer, but that's just me. Good work all around!
Always loved when Khan says where's the over ride and looks and sees like 3 thousand buttons lol.
Great job on your hard work
You took this scene and improved it in a way that both kept it true to the original scene, and added depth and detail that I'd argue improved audience immersion. Not many can claim they've done the same. Well done!
Breathtakingly phenomenal! Especially when she starts drifting! Great job fam!
As a Star Trek fan from the very beginning, I know the good old films almost by heart and this remaster of these scenes is really great. Hats off and LLAP
So cool : ) I love the Phaser that goes through the second hull of the Enterprise. Devastating hit.
Beautiful work! Most excellent! You are very talented!
Good job. I appreciate your hard work. Anyone who can create good quality Star Trek media is an asset to the galaxy.
Wow… you made one of the best scenes in TWoK even better! Well done!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This was such an incredibly tense exchange, and you managed to recreate that brilliantly. Well done!
That looks fantastic. Great work
That scene where the Reliant's phaser fire went through to the starboard side of the Enterprise's secondary hull might explain where the damage on that side might have come from that was seen in The Search for Spock.
Great job folks... fantastic graphics and quality editing want more of this
I love all your notes and of course the added CGI is amazing.
Well done! As someone who became a lifelong Trekkie because of this movie- thank you.

Nice job! The ship movements are particularly cool, as is the cloud of debris hanging around Enterprise. Really great work!
The details such as the phaser hit going through the hull and the floating debris around Enterprise were great!
“Standby to receive our transmission......now Mr Spock!”.......AWLAYS got me re-watching this wonderful movie 😊
Well done.
Great work! I really like the floating debris around the hull of the Enterprise. The phaser cutting through main engineering looks fantastic!
I like the added view of the Reliant phasers blasting right through the secondary hull out the other side, amazing!
Constructive Criticism: The ships are still too shiny & white at times. The hulls, nessels, & saucers lack metal-plate texturing. The lack of textured details makes them look artificial.
Well, that explains why she had damage on the other side in the next movie.
I said the same thing, When spock was recalling the battle damage to Admiral Kirk 😮
HOLEE CATS!!!!!
I never saw the previous remake. Whatever you changed - I definitely like this!
Wow. Simply excellent work. An already iconic moment in Star Trek history made all the better with your added talent.
Bravo, Bravo ! Thanks for bringing back a fond memory and made an incredible film beyond compare ! You made an aging Trekkie very happy !
The burn through on the initial volley was a wonderful touch.
I miss Kirstie Alley as Savik, she was the natural with that character.
Man that really brings the whole scene to life.
Fantastic work. Keep at it. A joy to watch I've seen both of your versions and I can definitely see the improvements.
The quick shot of the Reliant firing a torpedo at the saucer section was especially good
You just improved one of my all time favourite films. Excellent work. ❤
I enjoyed the different perspective shots as well as the phaser lock. Well done.
As someone who grew up watching this movie and having the last name of Kirk;
This video makes me want to say from my very core:
Khaaaaaaaaan!!!
Great job! I don't get tired of watching that exchange.
Even the Titles looked great!
Loved the work you did and the editing is also well done.
Excellent video!! Thanks for sharing your hard work!!! 🖖
