My very good friend Olivier.B died on 12th of July 1992 from free diving alone, we were 17. At that time this song was often on TV and it reminds me this tragic event. He was such a brilliant, smart and kind person. His parents never recovered from this loss. They are now gone too, may they found the rest.Today I listen to this song in his memory. RIP my friend Olivier.B you are still in my heart.

I love this tune originally sung by Quebequois singer Fabienne Thibeault in the French show Starmania (1978). "Le monde est stone" is very well known in Quebec and European francophonic countries, and has never left the top most loved songs ever since. Cyndi gives it a beautiful English version. I worked on this song by French composer Michel Berger, from a play called Starmania performed on-stage in France.
Cyndi was one of the few American pop stars chosen to interpret songs from the soundtrack.
This recording took place at the former Hit Factory studios, NYC, with Australian engineer Guy Gray in the first chair, and myself in tje second. The producers were C. Lauper and Peter Wood, a legendary keyboardist and a great person!
We engineered the recordings and mixed two songs from Starmania.
Cyndi's performance of this song brought the songwriter, Mr. Berger to tears.
Amazing experience, and wonderful people involved in it's production!

It's a shame that grunge and rap (sorry, I like few of those artists) controlled the 90s market in America forcing great musicians off the pop radio stations in favor of music that has not stood the test of time. She made history bursting onto the scene with four top 5 songs off her debut in 1983, with Time After Time being covered by hundreds since, and 30 years later completed a trifecta of great works with #1's on the Blues and Dance charts between 2008-10 and a 2013 Tony Award for best musical score (the first solo woman to do so). Cyndi, you are adored by many worldwide who love your vocal talents! Get her in the HOF in Cleveland, c'mon!

Should have been a bigger hit for her here in the U.S. . Something so beautifully melancholy about this song. I listen to this on my darkest days when the world is, indeed, stone. Would love to see her re-record this with someone like Cher or Annie Lennox.
This version is no less than fantastic. Miss Lauper sure knew how to perform and her voice is out of this world gorgeous.

"Le monde est stone" (meaning "the world is stone") is a song written and produced by Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon for the 1978 Canadian-French musical Starmania. It was originally performed by Fabienne Thibeault and released on the Starmania album in 1978. The English-language version of the song with lyrics by Tim Rice, titled "The World Is Stone", was recorded by American singer Cyndi Lauper and released on the Tycoon album in 1992. Celine Dion recorded "Le monde est stone" for her 1991 album, Dion chante Plamondon.
