I love this tune originally sung by Quebequois singer Fabienne Thibeault in the French show Starmania (1978). "Le monde est stone" is very well known in Quebec and European francophonic countries, and has never left the top most loved songs ever since. Cyndi gives it a beautiful English version. Love you, Cyndi Lauper 💜
Reading the comments... do people not know this is a cover from the French Canadian (Québecois) rock opera Starmania?? Written by Michel Berger if I'm not mistaken. Still I adore Cyndi Lauper. Beautiful cover.
noone really cares who wrote the songs she sings, as long as its her. Half of her two first albums were covers or written by Prince. I understand the desire to tell us as a musician myself but........ it could be any song and as long as her voice is on it..... its gold
How was this NOT on the essential Cyndi Lauper album!!!????? Beautiful,up there with I drove all night and All through the night!!! To of her most beautiful vocal performances!!
I worked on this song by French composer Michel Berger, from a play called Starmania performed on-stage in France. Cyndi was one of the few American pop stars chosen to interpret songs from the soundtrack. This recording took place at the former Hit Factory studios, NYC, with Australian engineer Guy Gray in the first chair, and myself in tje second. The producers were C. Lauper and Peter Wood, a legendary keyboardist and a great person! We engineered the recordings and mixed two songs from Starmania. Cyndi's performance of this song brought the songwriter, Mr. Berger to tears. Amazing experience, and wonderful people involved in it's production! A gem.
A #2 smash in France in 1992 (a whopping 3 months in the Top 5) and the European Chart's #55 song of the year. It's a shame that grunge and rap (sorry, I like few of those artists) controlled the 90s market in America forcing great musicians off the pop radio stations in favor of music that has not stood the test of time. She made history bursting onto the scene with four top 5 songs off her debut in 1983, with Time After Time being covered by hundreds since, and 30 years later completed a trifecta of great works with #1's on the Blues and Dance charts between 2008-10 and a 2013 Tony Award for best musical score (the first solo woman to do so). Cyndi, you are adored by many worldwide who love your vocal talents! Get her in the HOF in Cleveland, c'mon!
Cyndi you still have a voice of gold . I've been a fan of yours since my teen years I'm now 41 and you are still the best! Your songs have gotten me through some pretty rough times thank you. A voice as beautiful as an angel and you are still just as beautiful too. Love from iowa
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia "Le monde est stone" (meaning "the world is stone") is a song written and produced by Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon for the 1978 Canadian-French musical Starmania. It was originally performed by Fabienne Thibeault and released on the Starmania album in 1978. The English-language version of the song with lyrics by Tim Rice, titled "The World Is Stone", was recorded by American singer Cyndi Lauper and released on the Tycoon album in 1992. Stone the world is stone

It's hard on the soul
Stone the world is stone
Cold to the touch
And hard on the soul
In the grey of the streets
In the neon unknown
I look for a sign
That im not on my own
That im not here alone
As the still of the night
And the choke of the air
And the winners delight
And the losers despair
Closes in left and right
I would love not ot care
Stone, the world is stone
From the far away look
Without stars in my eyes
Throught the halls of the rich
And the flats of the poor
Wherever i go
Theres no warmth anymore
Theres no love anymore
So i turn on my heels
Im declining the fall
Ive had all i can take
With my back to the wall
Tell the world im not in
Im not taking the call
Stone the world is stone
But i saw it once
With the stars in my eyes
When each colour rang out
In a thunderous chrome
Its no trick of the light
I cant find my way home
In a world made of stone
