Lyrics:
I had to escape
The city was sticky and cruel
Maybe I should have called you first
But I was dying to get to you
I was dreaming while I drove
The long straight road ahead, uh, huh
Could taste your sweet kisses
Your arms open wide
This fever for you is just burning me up inside
I drove all night to get to you
Is that alright
I drove all night
Crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep
To make love to you
Is that alright
I drove all night

Cyndi has such an amazing voice and is one of the most beautiful women of past and today
Ages like a fine wine
Even Roy Orbison himself would praise her version.
You never outgrow Cyndi Lauper
So much respect for her
That’s true she is so creative
Am I the only one who prefers Cyndi’s version to this song over Celine’s version?
Obvious
Not at all... i think Cyndi knocked it out of the park, her voice as we never heard it, the edgy production and the video since it was 1989... it was very “Cyndi” - Celine’s well, it was supposed to serve a different purpose for Chrysler hence the spin of eurodisco. I was 14 in 89 - only now in my 40s I appreciate Cyndi’s artistry... never too late ;)
Cyndi's version gives me chills every time .
Celine and Cyndi are grand although, I actually prefer Rob Orbison's version - he wrote it after all. However, Cyndi and Celine's vocals are just stellar and both deserve praise and do the song more than justice!
EDIT: Apologises, Roy Orbison didn’t write this song as I’ve been told. It was actually written by Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg.
There is only Cyndi and Roy Orbison!

They just don't make music like this anymore.
I cant believe Im 50 years old, have seen this video hundreds of times over 34 years (its one of my favorites), and I think I just now understood the story in the video:
She never made it.
There was an accident (with the wrecked white car) and now shes haunting the lonely stretch of desert road in her Chevy coupe and lingering in his apartment near the Vegas strip. She always sees it as she imagined with him sleeping. Waiting for her.
Shes still driving. Dying to get to him. All night.
Forever.
😮 oh my!
i believe you've hit the nail on the head, the car, the fact she walks like a ghost (see-through) into his room etc. All makes sense now.
@@donnamcmahon251 crock of shit
OMG “But I was dying to get to you.” And she did literally. Also “I was dreaming while I drove” She fell asleep on the wheel while driving all night, dreaming about her lover. “This fever for you is just burning me up inside” I think this is the instant her car crashes, the climax of her fantasy, burning for her lover in her dream while burning in real life from the car crash.
Wow--this adds a whole new dimension to this video for me. Thank you.
I feel like Cyndi was kinda the Gaga of the 80s in a way she came out of nowhere with her own sound and fashion and beauty and no one really got her at first cause of the way she danced, sounded and looked.
Proof if it’s a real love
Roy Orbinson is one of my favorite singers of all time and this version is a proper homage to him. Incredible interpretation by Cindy Lauper
A great song can be song by many people. Celin Deon also recorded this song.
Cyndi's version was released before Roy's. Cyndis in 89. Roy's in 92. Although Roy did record it in 87 as a demo, it never got released until 92 because he had no record contract at the time. Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg wrote the song trying to capture Roy's style. Which they done perfectly.
My favorite song by Cyndi❤

I heard this song on radio the other day I could not believe it was Cyndi Lauper this is her best the drumming is fantastic
Cyndi has a richer voice
She doesn't get enough praise for her incredible vocal talent.
Sadly underrated....everyone focused on her quirkiness. It overshadowed her immense talent. I'm so glad this generation is rediscovering her.....
Okolo Pierre not underrated by me, born 1980 so it’s the music I remember the most! And since I regularly drive all night it’s fitting 😁
Agreed. She sounds best when she's wailing and really into a song. This for example really suits her. True Colors not so much. She sounds too mousy and sheepish for me when she sings quiet like that... Like my animal metaphors? :oP
I have no problem liking her and I was a grunge/rock type fan. She definitely was underrated due to her antics. But she has a powerful voice and she did this song better than anyone else.
Agreed.
I absolutely love this song! Brings me right back to the 80’s, the best decade ever!!!!!

This person is correct. Ms. Lauper does indeed have an 8 octave voice range & belts it out quite nicely at the end of the song!! She is nothing short of awe inspiring--even among opera talent!!!
Yeah, they don't realize it, because I had to make a friend listen to I'm Gonna Be Strong, and she said jokingly, it's that good? and it's the Girls Just Want To Have Fun singer??? I said YES! lol. I can't believe so many just think of her as that song, when there's this song, Time After Time, All Through The Night, True Colors and more which either hit #1 or came close and are very mature songs. Girls is great, but I'm upset so many forget great music. I'm thrilled though she has had a #1 selling Broadway album, #1 Blues album, and a #1 dance album all in the last 15 yrs! Take that haters!!!!!!
@@JusticeForTheDead Does anyone actually hate Cyndi Lauper? I've never met a single person that does. She's a complete delight.

I know Roy Orbison and Celine Dion sang it too, but nobody will ever beat Cyndi’s version of this song. Her voice just hits me in so many ways that I could just put this on repeat.
From Wiki:
"'I Drove All Night' is a song written and composed by American songwriters Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly and originally intended for Roy Orbison. Orbison recorded the song in 1987, the year before his death, but his version was not released until 1992. Cyndi Lauper recorded the song and released it as a single for her A Night to Remember album. Her version became a top 10 hit on both sides of the Atlantic in 1989."
I understand what you mean .Just that Cindy Lauper popularised the song as she got the single out there in 89 and became a huge hit .I love Roy Orbison he was brilliant and Cindy Laupers vocal on the single is also superb
@@marymcdoangh5835 Roy recorded it in 1987 before his death in 1988. Cyndi recorded and released her version in 1989. Roy's recording was released in 1991, with an album release in 1992. So no, Roy didn't cover it.

No its not it's been covered many times it's a Roy orbison cover version
Even celine dion has a cover it this song.
I'm sorry. I know that I'm going to be in the minority on this, but I think this is by far the best version ever released. She killed it. As a previous poster said, "This was her most mature and underrated hit." I like it much better than Celine Deon's version. It's so beautifully done. The cello's just put it over the edge. Unbelievably romantic and passionate. I agree - "no one beats Cyndi's performance of this song."
Cyndi's version takes me back to when I was a kid in the 80s the good old days. Celine's can't do that.
I would've loved to hear Elvis Presley sing this song, but Cyndi killed it.
It's one of those songs which Ms. Lauper makes it unique and masterful, Celine may have range but this is more like Ms. Lauper style and domain of genres which makes it unique to hers only & no comes closed to it even Celine.
Absolutely wonderful… I love Miss Lauper 🎉💫🎉
I met Cyndi back in 2003 in an album signing and she hugged each fan. She was so gracious and her skin was gorgeous, silky white and she smelled like flowers.

This is one of the gems from the 80's that is overlooked. This song blew me away back in 1989 when it came out and still amazes me almost 30 years later. That woman knows how to sing like nobody's business.
Yep! Cindi sure sang this song way before Celine and Cindi's version is way way way much much much better than Celine's. Song was originally intended for Roy Orbison who recorded it in 1987 a year before his death but wasn't released until 1992. By the time his version was released Cindi who already was very popular and famous sang the song 3 years earlier. Celine only sang her version in 2003.
I Love music.
So this was earlier or Roy Orbisons?
Lorenshyne well, is tricky, but the song was written for Orbison, and he recorded it before anyone else, but since he died so quickly after that, they asked Cindi to release the first version, although Orbison’s was recorded before
Yes and she still knows how to sing like nobody's business. Love Cyndi forever 💜 👌🏼
Cyndi Lauper She grew up in an abusive environment and spent two weeks in the woods alone with her dog after leaving the abusive family. . I grew up in an abusive family and will be the first to say it totally destroys one and makes them open to strange and perverse directions. Kids growing up with strong families are so much more adjusted and don't have to deal with the emotional damage which I deal with on daily basis.
+Toby Smith i get you completely.
+Toby Smith I like to think it made her stronger in her music though, for all the crucible-like pain that must have entailed...

+Rich Jacob who deleted their comments! Yea, same old story. My sisters tell me the same thing, even to point that I was responsible for being too sensitive as twelve year old kid. I'm not a psychologist but all I know is I grew up with extremely low self-esteem. How do you fix that? I was told how worthless and stupid I was
from 11 to 18. I grew up with a volatile father who would slap me across the floor for dropping my fork at the table. Abuse does permanent damage to a kid. Those in the war knew what could happen, even though that probably didn’t make things easier, but a 12 year old kid is an open book and handled wrong???
+Rich Jacob who deleted their comments. Also, what nerve you have for suggesting I didn't already forgive my father. You have absolutely no clue what you're talking about!
This Song Will NEVER get old! ❤️🎶
Cindy's singing ability is No.1♥️♥️♥️
"I Drove All Night" is a song written and composed by American songwriters Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly and originally intended for Roy Orbison. Orbison recorded the song in 1987, the year before his death, but his version was not released until 1992. Cyndi Lauper soon covered the song and released it as a single for her A Night to Remember album.
That explains why I will forever feel this is the original version. Thank you.
Incidentally, Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly penned Madonna's iconic hit "Like A Virgin".
Cyndi Lauper's version actually came out first, in 1989.
@scottrngr I didn't say it was ironic; I said it was incidental. I'm not Alanis Morissette - I know the definition of ironic. :)
Cyndi Lauper not only gives a powerful, outstanding rendition of the song, she's also an actress here as well. I like Celine Dion but her version of "I Drove All Night", good as it is, didn't quite do it for me; it doesn't seem to have the heart and passion of the Cyndi Lauper version.. Many years ago on the radio I heard just a bit of Cyndi Lauper's singing "I Drove All Night" and have never forgotten it. That says something about Cyndi Lauper's talent: decades after hearing a few moments of her singing I went looking for the song in its entirety.
Andrew Brendan Spooky but same story for me. I heard it way back in school when it was in the UK charts and vaguely recall this video. I just remember fancying the pants off Cyndi at the time, but back then as a 14 year old I had a permanent hard on. Just found and watched this epic and I’m absolutely in love with Cyndi. She is magnificent, beautiful, talented and so so quirky and cool.
What do you think of the original version Roy Orbison sang?
I hear that soul in Cyndi's voice. Who's driven all night to be with someone? Hell, I crossed continents and settled in a foreign land.
Cyndi's version is the better version in my opinion. The emotion in her version is unmatched with other versions I've heard.
She got tagged with the reputation of being kind of a goofball which has always overshadowed the fact that she's a GREAT singer.
she was more punk than pop too me. sadly empty pop tends to win?
55Porter hands down, she was a great singer!
She won Grammy, Tony, Laurence Olivier Mastercard Award, Emmy , Outer Critics Circle Award, Whatsonstage Award... She is a GREAT SINGER and Actress! Goofball - No. Anyone that thinks this should be , well, shot. I want her to sing theme song for my book/movie
Who tagged her with a goofball reputation?
@Screaming Mimi's Everyone who watched her? Who is everyone? You? What utter rubbish. You were there in the early 80's? I'm really sick of halfwit children commenting on artists they never even experienced and know nothing about.
The best Roy Orbinson cover .she's definitely underrated.

Super Cyndi, what else?
Nem Madonna supera essa voz essa sim teríamos prazer em ver um show ❤
She destroys Madonna. Better writer, singer, performer.
Come at me, bro!
madonna was always over rated
she surpasses her at singing, yeah because Madonna is mainly a dancer. Madonna has co wrote some of the most iconic hits so I would say they're equally good at it.. But, a better performer? NEVER. Madonna at the stage is something out of this world.
All to do with marketing. If it had been handled differently, then Miss Lauper would have been the true queen of eighties Pop :(
@@miksmith41 Madonna was a great star in her right. Had a huge number of hits. I do think Lauper should have been bigger than what she was.
