Excellent tutorial, informative on how to find the sweet spot. I think however, the more distant placement sounded wonderful, despite the reflective room.
Hi Todd, you might want to look at the camera instead of Sean since you're supposed to be explaining this stuff to us. Pretty informative video still, looking forward to the next!
I'm sorry- there are some things I did not understand: - Does on mic point to the 12th fret and one to the body? Or did you aim with the imaginary center line between the mic to the fretboard? - Is it really stereo? I don't hear any depth of stereo field.
Hey there and thanks for your message. It's near impossible to provide a blanket "best" statement in really any category, as there are so many factors that goes into choosing the best mic for your needs and tastes (what is the natural tone of the guitar? what preamp? what style of music?) That said, learning about the specifics of your setup and providing a tailored gear recommendation is what our team does best! Give us a ring at the shop and let's talk about what is going to be the best SDC for YOU!
Ta Todd, Just asking your personal preference for recording Acoustic guitar solo, not what is "best". It would be like asking what guitar is best..Need to talk. what is yr email please todd at sound pure ?
not only is this recording in mono, but XY works best if you're 6-10 feet away from the source. can't believe how many people are watching those UA-cam videos and learning the WRONG way
Is there a single RIGHT way ? Not to mention, what I want to hear from my acoustic guitar might be vastly different in a stripped-down song which features, primary, an acoustic guitar, compared to a fully-produced track with drums, bass, and a bunch of other stuff. It's all about experimentation and finding your own voice with the instrument and microphones, on a song-by-song basis.
Your advice runs counter to every professional video and article out there, from youtube channels to trusted publications. But sure, random nobody, we’ll listen to you. My own recordings come alive at about 12-18”.

Do you realize your recordings in the video are coming out mono, not stereo? So much for a X/Y demo.

Actually
I think this was uploaded in mono. Doesn't sound like XY.
The intro and outro are in stereo, but all the guitar is in mono. I ran the audio through a vectorscope to confirm I wasn't losing my mind.
@@BlackGhostAudio Yep, what a shame! What a total bummer.... and strange they didn't redo/reupload. Oh well...
What is the guitar you're recording? I see it's a Collings, but what model? Sounds grreat!
hii
but what about the gain when you moving the mics !
Elias dahdouh I felt a similar level of terror
solid advices !
Hey Todd, for recording solo acoustic guitar... what is your preference, a M60 FET Cardioid Stereo Set or KM184 stereo set ?

A little bassy, but a smidge of EQ would sort that out. I would have moved it a little more to the fretboard sound
