I read an interview with him where he said that he was a fan of the Hitchhiker's Guide books and had fond memories of reading them along with his daughter. He sneakily dropped a hint in a red carpet interview that he was hoping to be in the movie but no one publicly knew he was still in negotiations and hadn't been officially been cast yet. It was about time Bill Nighy did one of these videos - a truly underrated character actor and total legend - love him in Pride, Cornetto Trilogy, Rango and many more. ( one of my faves )
He’s not underrated in the UK. He is highly respected and his stage work is excellent, as New Yorkers would also attest as he has been on Broadway a lot.
Didn’t talk about his role of Rufus Scrimgeour in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. Nor about the character Douglas Ainslie in the The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel movies. Loved his performances in these movies as well. He is one of the few actors I enjoy watching in anything and everything. Would love to meet him one day.
Davy Jones is definitely a top 5 movie villain ever. Thank you Bill Nighy and the to the CGI people in charge for creating one of the most iconic characters ever.
The Davy Jones character was one of my favorite as a kid. I feel sorry to hear that he didn’t enjoy playing him. You would have never know, he did an outstanding job nailing that role which deserves an award by the way. Amazing actor 👌🏻
My favourite Bill Nighy performance was in the 2014 movie Pride where he plays a very closeted, retired miner protesting pit closures. Bill Nighy has this ability where he can emote entirely through random details like a cheek twitch, or slight eyebrow raise. Through those methods, he can deliver as much emotion as a Shakespearean sonnet. Also, Arthur Christmas is fantastic because they let Bill Nighy go batshit insane.
In British films, Bill Nighy often plays this character "Bill Nighy", a middle aged cynic with a secret heart of gold and dry wit. But he does it so well you can't help loving him doing it and when he's allowed to play different characters he's very versatile, just listen to him voicing Sam Gamgee (back when he was credited as "William Nighy.") If you go by interviews etc though this acting persona isn't like him at all though, he seems very quiet and unassuming, and really isn't too interested in talking about his films.
Yes I was surprised to see his humor being all verbal. None of that lively body language, no smile, no snort... Quite a stiff upper lip. I don't mean that as criticism, it's just different.
As a Brit his funniest line was when he said "Well Ant or Dec...." The "or" bit was great because Ant And Dec are huge stars here but most people have no idea which is which.
met this guy on oxford street in London. was walking straight towards me, fully suited & briefcase in hand. stopped and had a quick chat. absolute legend
For me - one of his greatest characters was 'Ray Simms' in 'Still Crazy'. His performance left me in tears of laughter. Brilliant movie, and his performance was just magical.
Absolutely. A precursor to Billy Mack, but a brilliant performance. Let's hear it for Ray's rendition of "All over the world!" And for letting Les do "The Flame Still Burns."
Aside from his obvious fantastic work as Davy Jones and Viktor, while it isn't live action 'acting', his voice work for Rattlesnake Jake in "Rango" was super good too! Bill playing against Johnny Depp is always a result for amazement.
Of all his most iconic movie roles, Davy Jones tops the list. A character well developed and portrayed. That Scottish accent was brilliant 🙌🏾🙌🏾 ....thank Sir Nighy for giving us that iconic role
Thanks for your role as Davey Jones in the "Pirates" movies.. It may have been humbling to be in "pajamas covered with dots" all day, but those two films brought great joy to many cinema viewers, including my family!

What a huge actor. For me his roles in "The Boat that Rocked" and "Pride" deserved to be in this "iconic" list.
It's on his vanity fair interview look it up
Love is off the cuff dry humor....deeply funny man without being physicals or crude. Very much a charmer - I think a conversation by the fire with him would be wonderful.
I loved him in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy as well. He had a smaller part but was still brilliant. His voice and Alan Rickmans in the same movie. Amazing.
Looking for this mention. Loved him as Slarty Bartfast 😄
I was binge watching all Alan Rickman movies recenlty and i stumbled upon Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.. Didn't know that Bill was in on it. I like that movie, one of my favorites. :)
@@kimtan0627 Yup! Good old Slarty Bartfast 😁
It's one of my favorite books and movies. I love his and Arthur's conversation.
"Best laid plans of mice, you know"
"Best laid plans of mice and men, you mean"
"I don't think men have much to do with it"
And you can't forget "I'd much rather be happy than right, any day"
I read an interview with him where he said that he was a fan of the Hitchhiker's Guide books and had fond memories of reading them along with his daughter.
He sneakily dropped a hint in a red carpet interview that he was hoping to be in the movie but no one publicly knew he was still in negotiations and hadn't been officially been cast yet. When his manager angrily rang him to ask what he was thinking he said, "I want to be in it."
Bill Nighy is the personification of charismatic, hip, cool and funny… and talent!
I love to hear him speak.
I'd love to hear him narrate a book about adventure or something
I love Bill Nighy he's one of my favorite actors this is so interesting to hear about behind the scenes. I loved his performance in Underworld and Pirates of the Caribbean.
This man’s genius was to ground the ludicrous and extraordinary with incredible uniqueness and personality.
Bill Nighy is an amazing actor, his portrayal of Davy Jones was incredibly human and emotional for being an immortal monster of the sea
I'm so happy he did Emma. He portrayed Mr Woodhouse's fidgetiness as that of an elderly family man with an abundance of heart.
I love the scene where they are saying goodbye to Isabella and her family and Mr Woodhouse says I wish she wouldn't go. In the brief shot of his face you can tell he's terrified Isabella is going to get sick and he's never going to see her again. It's a really under-rated performance. He was awesome.
Loved him in Underworld. One of his best and most illuminating performances - he literally breathed life into Victor.
Underrated series.
@@sw-gsAgreed with the first 2, last two messed me up a bit, but Kate was still beautiful in them.
Victor and Davy Jones are my two all-time favorite roles by the man.
Even just sitting in a chair talking about himself he is wickedly funny. This man is a treasure.
The way he moves and talks as both Viktor and Davy Jones are top notch acting though, especially Viktor.
I know they were smaller parts but I was really hoping he would talk about his parts in Shaun of The Dead and Hot Fuzz.
I’m quite alright, Barbara. I ran it under a cold tap.
I literally discovered him in Shaun of the Dead & then set out to watch his movies. A classic.
True. I too was bit disappointed.
Same
@@elliewessex4134 He was epic in Shaun of the Dead, with so many great one-liners. Though now I can't hear Freddie sing "Tonight....." without replaying the fight scene in my head.
Bill Nighy is one of those few actors that I find so fascinating that it makes me watch all of their filmography. Following his career since 2003
Davy Jones is one of the best villains to ever grace a screen! And I feel like Viktor is up there too! Only thing I hate about Underworld was how they always killed off the good villains too early - Luckily they made the prequel movie to make up for that mistake 🙏
Oh my gaaahd, I caught the snort too! It was from one of my friends in the 90's. I love Bill so much!! Every performance is a rare treat.
His role on Doctor Who in the episode Vincent and the Doctor was absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful and soul-wrenching.
I loved him as Davy Jones. Absolutely perfect casting.
Yet another British & American national treasure in the dear Bill Nighy! Love Actually & the museum curator in the Van Gogh episode of Doctor Who are my favorite Nighy projects!
He is one of my favorite actors, I 've watched almost everyone of his films. He is the best "not acting" actor. He is always there as he is. Bill, I love your work.
Bill Nighy is such an amazing actor. He would have made a brilliant Doctor. Probably too late now but at least he has been on Doctor Who playing a very Doctorish character
I would have loved to see him play a more contemplative and less wacky Doctor than we've been getting for a while, without going over-the-top maudlin. He would definitely have brought some amazing skills to the role.
Bill Nighy, you are one of my favourite voices & actors & you always have been.
It was about time Bill Nighy did one of these videos - a truly underrated character actor and total legend - love him in Pride, Cornetto Trilogy, Rango and many more. ( one of my faves )
I totally agree, Bill is a brilliant actor and I really like every film he is involved in.
He’s not underrated in the UK. He is highly respected and his stage work is excellent, as New Yorkers would also attest as he has been on Broadway a lot.
This man is too iconic and too precious to be this insecure. I want to give him a big hug. 🥺
He's not being insecure in the slightest, that's classic British self-deprecation.
Why do you think he is insecure? I don't see that at all.
Funny, I used the same word to describe his performances in Underworld & Pirates of the Caribbean. Truly iconic.
How is he insecure
@@jens2049
I got that impression too because he said that he refuses to watch anything he’s featured in.
Love listening to mr nighy speak. What a guy, a rare breed. Happy this video exists
From the 2003 until now Bill has been in so many successful movies more than many younger actors.
The dry sarcastic humor is just top tier through out the entire video 🤣 it’s what I imagine Matt smith being like when he gets older and I love it.
I have always enjoyed watching him in the movies. One of my favourite roles of his is in The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy, as Slartibartfast.
He’s so charming and has a brilliant sense of humour! Love him
funniest of gq,its so dry
Didn’t talk about his role of Rufus Scrimgeour in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. Nor about the character Douglas Ainslie in the The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel movies. Loved his performances in these movies as well. He is one of the few actors I enjoy watching in anything and everything. Would love to meet him one day.
Why should he talk about his role in Harry Potter when he only appeared for like 5 minutes?
@@Zerath0 Because he was memorable? In an 8-picture-long sea of British accents, he stands out.
@@colejolley certainly not one of his most iconic roles.
@@colejolley I would disagree with that statement. Memorable he was not.
@@Zerath0 I thought he was. His scene just popped into my head immediately reading this comment.
He is so effortless stylish, and charismatic in movies and in real life as can be shown here.
He inspired so much awe as a vampire in Underworld
I adore this dude. He's so dry and funny. I don't know if he's doing it on purpose, but he's literally flipping the bird for the whole interview.
He has Dupuytren's contracture, which affects the 4th and 5th fingers on both hands.
@@TylerHNelsonBrowncoat Thank you for that! It explains a great deal, but detracts from my enjoyment in no way.
@@ericthompson3982 Of course not. It's just rather interesting.
@@TylerHNelsonBrowncoat I have never been unimpressed by him.
@@ericthompson3982 Nor have I. I particularly enjoyed him in Wild Target. Shame that one didn't make the list here.
one of the more underrated works he's done a great job in is "Pride". played the role with such intensity and heart, absolute legend
Really no word about the most wonderful emotional episode of new Doctor Who he starred in? Millions of people cried..
In the dictionary under “lovingly self-deprecating dry British wit” it says, “see Bill Nighy. Absolutely wonderful.
I love him so much. Everything he does. Just brilliant.
His role in Love Actually will remain iconic forever.
He was born to play a washed up 70s rocker!
Love, love, LOVE that film. So disappointed it wasn’t featured here. Along with the boat that rocked.
“Happy birthday by the way.”
“I’m not fifty.”
🙂
One of my all time favourite movies!
Plus he looked great in heavy eyeliner!
Aside from his obvious fantastic work as Davy Jones and Viktor, while it isn't live action 'acting', his voice work for Rattlesnake Jake in "Rango" was super good too! Bill playing against Johnny Depp is always a result for amazement.
I love his reading of the Charles Paris books. Understated and utterly brilliant.
Of all his most iconic movie roles, Davy Jones tops the list. A character well developed and portrayed. That Scottish accent was brilliant 🙌🏾🙌🏾 ....thank Sir Nighy for giving us that iconic role
I’ve seen him and liked him in lots of things, but I loved his cameo in Doctor Who where he talks about Van Gough
So glad people remember the Van Gogh monologue as it was an incredibly impressive acting performance.
Every time Bill Nighy shows up in a film, it’s a must watch. The Girl in the Cafe is an underrated gem.
“I am the sea!” LOVED his role as Davy Jones! And not to mention Shaun of the Dead! He’s fantastic!
Love Actually is one of my favorite movies and Bill absolutely stole the show! Billy Mack was hilarious!
I haven’t seen all of these, but I now have a new found respect for the man.
He’s s fantastic actor. I loved him alongside dame judi dench and cate Blanchett in “Notes on a scandal”. Incredible acting
He was great in Pirate Radio and magnificent in Underworld. I've never seen a Bill Nighy movie that I didn't like.
Yesterday when they released the new music video he has starred in for Florence + The Machine I was more excited than I've ever been for a music video
"About time" always makes me cry. Such an amazing movie. ❤
BILL NIGHY personality is wonderful, the way to talk, to express his ideas, the charisma, men at finest and classy form
Thanks for your role as Davey Jones in the "Pirates" movies.. It may have been humbling to be in "pajamas covered with dots" all day, but those two films brought great joy to many cinema viewers, including my family!
This man is a human genius. We are lucky to be watching what he does in real time.
I love everything he’s done, nice to hear him and to see his personality, I like him even more now
The greatest performance he ever did was as Sam Gamgee in the 1981 BBC Radio Play adaptation of the Lord of the Rings ;). Its half forgotten 13 hour epic gem. He sounds very different in it :P
The fact that Bill is (probably unintentionally) flipping us off throughout this interview... we salute you, sir. 👋
They also missed his role in The boat that rocked, he was amazing. Definitely one of my favorite actors.
