He's one animator. These characters are created by many people, starting by concept artists who draw a bunch of ideas for the director to choose. Some artist drew several Gollums and Peter Jackson chose one. Then many diferent artists modeled and animated the character. Same thing for the shots.

It’s awesome to see their passion from beyond the screen!
Davy Jones is one of my favourite antagonists, maybe my most fav. And beyond his written character and outstanding performance, the CG and everything gives it SO much life. The writers, Bill, and VFX team are firing on all cylinders and it's wonderful. Seeing that computer assisted animation can go into making something unachievable otherwise on the desired scale and emotion is really neat to see in a world of modern BTS adding in a false location that exists in reality. It's projects like PotC that stand out in that regard to me, using CG when and element cannot be done otherwise. Thanks for the long breakdown on Jones!
4:05 easily one of the greatest single moments in cinematic history ever, that shot of gollum holding the ring with the huge crescendo of music choir blaring...and then.. silence...and the single lone boys voice crying out, absolutely fucking kills me. I cannot imagine any other composer doing a better job than what Howard Shore did for these movies.
Was talking with a friend just yesterday about how important it is for an artist to not just think in terms of realistic animation because it may not feel quite right so animators have to make those artistic decisions to sell the shot.
I really liked the Kong dilemma he explained. I first thought “eh doesn’t look to good” and then as he explains why it’s not great due to the way it was filmed makes so muchhh sense! Respectttt
@@1747carling there have been CGI effects that, when I was still a kid, I though they looked so real. But then technology improved and now I can blatantly tell it's "just" CGI. The PoTC trilogy is not the case as all the effects look incredibly well even today. Same with for example LOTR.

Honestly, it might be worse these days because of the fact that these days, movie companies tend to make movies faster but with weird/straight up bad cgi, spider man cgi in marvel franchise is complete bad while in Tasm franchise, it’s very photoreal because they took their time meanwhile marvel tries to make it faster
@@ancientflames I think that's mostly down to how modern production works. Comparatively to some of the tent pole trilogies in the early 2000s like Lord of the Rings which had almost a decade of planning and top artists, most big movies (especially by Disney) are made quite quickly like with Marvel. Marvel for example, has multiple teams developing multiple movies/shows at once, with most teams and houses being the same people working on all of them. So they spend like 4 months filming 10 months before releasing it and that doesn't give time for a lot of wiggle room, especially for last minute changes to CGI heavy scenes or sequences. While some of them look great like Infinity War and a good portion of Phase 3, you get stuff like Black Widow which has terrible compositing in the final act and that's just due to most of these shots being reshoots or pickups done very late having little time to get done. They've already talked about Black Panther but it was a very similar scenario with that, the final act and fight between the villain was filmed last and had to be done in 2/3 months before release. While I enjoy the movies, I don't like the over reliance on CG mainly because not a lot of the time is put into CG especially when they've got 10 other projects down the pipeline that have to be started the next day. Films from Denis Villeneuve, Matt Reeves and Edgar Wright are fantastic in all departments, especially visual effects, because they give time for the teams to work out kinks and adapt with ample time given. Sorry for the little rambling, I've thought about this a lot lmao.
Finally the episode I've been waiting for a whole 1 year straight. Davy Jones is my Favorite CG Character Ever. Thanks a lot Corridor Crew for Reacting to this Masterpiece.

Talking about Tim Burton and stop motion meeting CG, would love to hear him and Corridor talk about Mars Attacks, because originally Tim wanted to do stop motion and wasn’t sure if CG would carry a movie.

As a fan of that movie do you know if there's any validity to the rumor that they originally wanted to advertise it as just a regular live action movie to see if anyone would realize it was actually all CG?
@@ziggygunz2447 I have heard that as well, and I know some people were initially confused over if it was some next level CGI or just really stylized aesthetics. They're not just simulating contact, but FRICTION too!!!! I've been a Ray Harryhausen fan since I was a kid, and I'm still learning new things to appreciate about his work. That's insane.
The skeleton taking away the shield of the actor with it's own shield... now that is one of the most satisfying stuff I've seen, knowing this is stop motion.
Please re-look at the brilliant movie rango! Particularly the motion capture aspect of it. It's facinating how the whole thing was essentially acted on a sound stage then translated by animators.
I recently watched Men in Black 3 for the first time. And it made me think that the series would be a great on to take a look at. It's got both great and kind of weird shots that would be interesting to hear people's thoughts on.
I stand by the assertion that Dead Man's Chest is one of the greatest films ever made. The story is amazing and the visual effects were revolutionary. Just all around a 10/10 movie
Pretty sure in Jason and the Argonauts with the skeleton scene there is a moment when they take a sword from one of the skeletons and use it. Had to be some magic going on there :)

I think it’s amazing how they just decided to start making movies based on a ride they gad made, and then created amazing CG characters like Davy Jones.
I'd love for you to take a look at Dave Cameron's Avatar again. Specifically, when I watched the movie, the Colonel guy that Stephen Lang plays looked so ...rendered? ...CG?, even more so than the tall blue people, despite being one of the few human characters. I wonder if you guys, with your knowledge, could tell me why a real human being looked more CG than the actual CG characters.
I'm so glad he addressed the elephant in the room regarding Jackson's King Kong. I wanted to love that movie so much and some scenes are mind blowing, however, almost every scene involving a live actor with the CG beasts was terrible. I was just jarringly pulled out of the movie for those scenes and it tarnished it for me. It was such a shame.
Great episode!! Love Davy Jones effects, the wet look of the skin makes it so tangible too. Suggestion for future episode: Just finished the season finale of The Guilded Age on HBO and one of the extras was all about the production. How do you film a show set in 1880s New York when New York looks nothing like that these days? They said about 30-40 percent is built on set and the rest is filled in with CGI - it looks very convincing! You guys were also talking about effects in main title sequences, this show has a beautiful CGI title sequence. The marble flowers opening alone is worth mentioning! Love you guys!
Finally! Well done Robin for highlighting the godfather of sfx, the great Ray Harryhausen! It's the one thing I felt had been missing, not appreciating and acknowledging his work. I'm of an age where they were my Star Wars, and the skeleton battle and Talos etc, with that Bernard Herman score from Jason and the Argonauts still thrill to this day.
I would love a reaction to bad and great werewolves transformations, for example 2004 vanhellsing, underworld series, Harry Potter, etc... it would be really cool!

That reminds me, they've gotta do Rango at some point
absolute milestone of filmhistory just like lotr
@@hillefoozy for an animator reacts! Yesss that would be so good!
At World's End is basically a pass from me, I was incredibly disappointed by that entry. Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man's Chest are both phenomenal though.
This guy's a legend man he's literally created so many iconic shots and characters!!
He's one animator. These characters are created by many people, starting by concept artists who draw a bunch of ideas for the director to choose. Some artist drew several Gollums and Peter Jackson chose one. Then many diferent artists modeled and animated the character.
Same thing for the shots.
*7:56** It shows that they're Cgi guys, that their only concern about that scene of Kong climbing is that he could do it with one hand, and not the fact that this heavy ass gorilla didn't break the walls by holding them in that way*
The fact that you still visually can tell it's Bill Nighy behind all that cg just shows how well Davy Jones was done
Gollum and Davy Jones are two of the best CG characters of all time. Absolutely incredible work.
Add King Kong on that list as well.. there are some questionable CG scenes in the film, but King Kong always looks amazing.
And honestly, the only CG character since then that really compares is Thanos.
You forgot Ceasar from Planet of the Apes... man i love these movies and the cgi from the apes are just soooo realistic
@@bubiwaan5857 Yeah, the last 2 films are unreal at how real they look. The big orangutan, photo-realistic.
@@ComedyBros5 Depends on which Thanos. Sometimes it's amazing and sometimes he looks way to plastic.
Btw, I would throw Alita from Alita Battle Angle in there as well. She does fall a bit in the uncanny valley, but the animation is crazy good! After I saw it the first time I got convinced that we would se fully CG humans in movies in a not to far distant future.
Suggestion: I think it would be really interesting to see you guys trying to recreate the famous scene from "Jason and the Argonauts" with today's CGI technology.
Agreed! I would love to see the comparison, maybe someone taking the challenge of recreating the scene the exact way as the original like they did with the Dune scene
It would probably be more realistic to attempt the skeleton fight Harryhausen did for Sinbad since that only has one skeleton.
as in like what they did with the Dune shields video where they just put their version on top of it or rebuild the scene from the ground up?
@@redglassesart usually they do those challenges in like a few days, and you wont get that level of stop motion in that time^^
Yes
To this day Davy Jones remains one of the best, most realistic CG characters ever created. Probably the only character I can think of that 100% looks real and present in the world.
It's so good that the other CG characters in the same shot look only ok at times, at other times not great. But if they were in any other film of the time you'd think 'damn that's good cg'
@@mikeprice25 exactly right. He sometimes even looks more realistic than Captain Jack Sparrow
Thanos was also pretty realistic.
@@tylerstanford2275 true, Thanos was both right and rendered extraordinarily well
Christopher Jones from District 9 is a close second IMO.
the creature in Avatar snapping at him as he jumps off the cliff, it actually makes sense that it bites and claws in the same attack. This is very reminiscent of how felines hunt
I was thinking the same thing - they grab with the claws and kill with the jaws.
I know everyone likes to talk about Gollum, but damn, that Davy Jones animation is so freaking good, probably one of the best I've ever seen.
Andy Serkis is one of my favorite actors period. King Kong, Claw, Smeagle, Cesar, and now Alfred. He’s an awesome actor. Not just an awesome actor, but also an awesome director too
haddock
I think Wren can officially go on record for being the first person ever to use the term, "Cheek Nostril".
My favorite thing about this series is that it’s given me such an appreciation for the artists behind the scenes and I love being able to see artists, stunt doubles, actors, directors, and more be able to nerd out about their art and creations.
Davy Jones, Ceaser, Thanos and Gollum are the gold standard. Absolutely Amazing.
Agreed. The Lord of the Rings as a whole is still my favorite trilogy to date.
I agree, the trilogy had that lightning in a bottle effect with various elements, music was one of them
Davy jones is such a work of art
Was talking with a friend just yesterday about how important it is for an artist to not just think in terms of realistic animation because it may not feel quite right so animators have to make those artistic decisions to sell the shot.
I really liked the Kong dilemma he explained. I first thought “eh doesn’t look to good” and then as he explains why it’s not great due to the way it was filmed makes so muchhh sense! Respectttt
That snap/claw shot from Avatar is definitely tense. First time I watched it I thought it was going to be a takeout and Sully would get snagged.
Verified? But 6 days ago
The CGI of Davy Jones is so amazing he still looks 100% real
What do you mean 'still looks 100% real'? Time can't make things that look 100% real look less than 100% real.
@@1747carling there have been CGI effects that, when I was still a kid, I though they looked so real. But then technology improved and now I can blatantly tell it's "just" CGI. The PoTC trilogy is not the case as all the effects look incredibly well even today. Same with for example LOTR.
@@1747carling You know what she means. You making it complicated to prove your silly point mate.
I'd really like to see a Foley artist come in and go over sound effects. Not visual, I know, but still would be interesting.
Agreed!!
That would be amazing
Oh hell yes! I've had interest in Foley since middle school.
100% yes to this idea!!
YES! Please do SFX Artists react!!!
The most fun thing is that you showed special effects from several different decades and they ALL work because of the expertise and attention to detail.
This show has really evolved into something special. The inclusion of industry professionals seriously makes this one of the most compelling series on UA-cam. Congrats to you guys for continuing to innovate and staying fresh all these years
The animations in PotC still hold up amazingly to this day.
Just imagine if they had the textures that VFX Artists today have. They would be the top examples of VFX by far
It tops almost every vfx characters to this date.
@@luciddream5055 the only thing that comes close is thanos
Lolol why did my mind go straight to Passion of the Christ not Pirates of the Caribbean 🤦🏼♀️
The animation in lord of the rings was revolutionary
Yeah
Still holds up very well even compared to modern stuff
@@ancientflames holds up better then the Hobbit, my god they look trash 😅

Man I remember when Avatar came out and was such a big deal. Like it looked so good that people actually felt as if Pandora was real. There were actually articles on people being so depressed because they wished that they had the ability to have an Avatar and live on a place like Pandora. Crazy times.
I rmbr that too
Yeah and it still looks so good
Just imagine Avatar 2, with 12 years of tech development since part 1. It will absolutely set a new standard.
God, rewatching Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind just blew my mind with the number of dreamy sequences it has. The seamless edits, lighting changes and cleverly done VFX shots are masterful. How they show eroding memories or warp locations and timelines is so visceral and drama-driven. Please shed some light here - Your Day 1 fan.
I remember seeing davie jones for the first time and being just in awe at the animation, its incredible work.
My brain genuinely registered it as "real" if that makes sense. The execution was soo good.
Everything about Davy Jones is incredible, especially Bill Nighy.
What I love about these series, is that they aren't purely entertainmental! I actually learn legit bits of useful tricks that I can use in my own work! Please keep them coming ^^
The Expanse's many space visual effects need an episode or two solely to them. Even the planetside shots could get more love.
Having Robyn is a treat. His knowledge, and voice has really makes episodes better.
I also love how the animators gave a little bit of extra twitch or jolt to the acting of the tentacles, whenever Davy Jones has a sharp emotion or lash out moment. Just adds to the realism
Talking about Tim Burton and stop motion meeting CG, would love to hear him and Corridor talk about Mars Attacks, because originally Tim wanted to do stop motion and wasn’t sure if CG would carry a movie.
Would love for you guys to start a new series exploring the world of FX makeup, with special guests who work in the industry (either on-camera or behind the scenes), like Doug Jones, for instance.
Thank you all so much for such an incredible episode! I love all VFX artists react episodes, but Robyn, Wren, and Niko are an unstoppable combination! My two favorite VFX artists react episodes have been this one and the one where Robyn talks about his work on Dune.
Way to go ya'll! I can't wait to see more episodes (hopefully some with Robyn) and more awesome landmark films that Robyn worked on (thinking about Dune 2 ;) )!
Yeah, I legitimately thought Davy was an animatronic mask. It STILL looks too realistic for me to believe it's NOT, lol.
Jason and the Argonauts was crazy to watch as a child, I think it and Star Wars were my childhood favorites.
I saw it in the early 80’s as a kid and it terrified me. 😂
I would love to see CC take a look at Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. While not a box office dynamo, as "the first photorealistic computer-animated feature film" it is a landmark in motion capture and computer animation.
I was into 3D technology, games and behind the scenes cinema tech at the time so I knew what it was long before ever seeing a trailer and as such can't really give an opinion on how convincing it was to an average viewer at the time. I just know I was highly anticipating it at the time and ended up impressed at the tech, if not the story.
Would love to see you guys do a full break down of the Fan Film “Batman: Dead End”. Still one of the coolest fan made crossovers ever done and still holds up despite time. I remember hearing the tales of people lining up at cons to experience multiple viewings of it
Yes!!! It's like a forgotten piece of art these days. I watched it again circa six months ago and then scoured the Internet for any details or behind the scenes stories and there is some fascinating stuff out there. It was like a miracle that it came together at all.
I definitely didn't have enough appreciation for Davy Jones when that movie came out. Now I do.
I love how far this show has come. The guests you all bring on now are fantastic. It's super inspiring to see you all so passionate.
From sofa to sofa: thanks guys for making Saturday great again!🤜🏼🤛🏻
Robyn seems like such a cool, down-to-earth dude; very humble and aware of how fortunate his path has been. Of course, that path would not be as great (or long) if he didn't have the talent to back it up, as he truly has! Thank you all for sharing these clips and insights.
Earlier Jake tested the accuracy of the disappearance of batman. Can you guys make one to test the effectiveness of how people in movies disappear in front of others in a crowded station or mall like the one in John Wick 2?
As an aspiring 3D artist and VFX artist. I love how these videos are fun, but also show the smaller details to consider when creating your art. Speaking of small details, Square space offers you all the small analytic details you need to easily scale your website audience.
You guys really help me appreciate film and cgi in a new way and I think it's really refreshing. I've kinda lost my love for movies in recent years but this was really cool.

Niko's comment on the sword blew my mind. It's not just connecting, but sliding around too, because you can see the light reflecting off the blade.
Would love to see this

I recently watched Men in Black 3 for the first time. And it made me think that the series would be a great on to take a look at. It's got both great and kind of weird shots that would be interesting to hear people's thoughts on.
I stand by the assertion that Dead Man's Chest is one of the greatest films ever made. The story is amazing and the visual effects were revolutionary. Just all around a 10/10 movie
I think it would have benefited greatly by removing the whole island sequence. Aside from that, the movie is amazing.

I think it’s amazing how they just decided to start making movies based on a ride they gad made, and then created amazing CG characters like Davy Jones.
I am so happy you guys are finally talking about Harryhausen! He for me is such a big inspiration and you can learn a lot about vfx in his work.
Love the homage and respect for Jason & The Argonauts 👍🏻
Davy Jones is one of the most remarkable cgi characters in Cinema 🐙
I'd love for you to take a look at Dave Cameron's Avatar again. Specifically, when I watched the movie, the Colonel guy that Stephen Lang plays looked so ...rendered? ...CG?, even more so than the tall blue people, despite being one of the few human characters. I wonder if you guys, with your knowledge, could tell me why a real human being looked more CG than the actual CG characters.
I think you're getting James Cameron mixed up with a former British Prime Minister.
Suggestion for future episode:
Just finished the season finale of The Guilded Age on HBO and one of the extras was all about the production.
I would like to see a reaction on Love, Death & Robots for the "real life" looking episodes like Beyond the Aquila Rift, Snow in the Desert or Life Hutch.
And an "animators react" episode for episodes like "The Witness" and "Zima Blue". They could also check out the stop motion in "All Around the House".
All of this guys stuff from YEARS ago Looks and feels more believable than almost all the recent MCU cgi and human interaction scenes. Well done sir 😂
