My son learned this first thing he taught himself to play guitar at 11. He’s very talented and loves Radiohead decades after I did. I think the answer is simple. The quality of his voice transcends the message. How he gets those notes with such feeling is quite frankly stunning. We become hypnotised by the quality of the sound and thus don't connect with its true meaning. Whether that is good or bad I don't now but perhaps that helps.
