Radiohead is not depressive. Is not the perfect music to be depressed. It is the perfect music to come to terms with anything that caused grieve, that makes us feel small and powerless. It's the perfect music to remind us that is ok to not be ok. It's part of the human experience.
Just discovered Radiohead too, about 3 years ago. I am 22 years old now and Radiohead coincidentally became my quarter-life crisis theraphy. One of the best things ever happened in my whole life.
The MIX on this song deserves enormous credit. The 2nd half of the song has two separate beautiful guitar melodies weaving in and out of each other, with strings, beautiful shimmering drums, thick low bass, and one of the greatest vocal performances I've ever heard. And every layer is vividly clear and glorious.
It might not be a mix, since this is called a counterpoint (thank you Charles Collins). It's where two separate melodies play at once, and there's enough notes in each to connect them as one.

Since my wife passed away 3 years ago I can’t listen to RadioHead without crying, but then again it’s the perfect music to be sad to. I wish it was still fun like when we used to go to their shows.
i remember when i first listenned to The Bends in the 90's, this song and fake plastic trees appeared magic to me, better than my iron lung which led me to this album; strangely Creep became famous after this album eventhough it was released on Pablo Honey which was prior to the Bends;
This song is about the passage of time, and the realization that everything is effected by death. If you listen to the rhythm, it sounds like a ticking clock. Also the steady rhythm could represent a heartbeat, and symbolize how much time a person has left. The whole song seems hopeless at first, like death always happens and there is nothing we can do to change it, but it has the best redeeming quality at the end when Thom says “Immerse your soul in love”. Basically he’s saying that life is too short to live in hate, and that we need to make the most of each moment by loving each other.
that phrase is metaphorical that can be interpreted as you say to love each other but it conveys also a more tragic and misterious connotation that is stronger than the easier one of loving, in fact the verb used as imperative "immerse" suggests that you are compelled to do that but realising that you are going also to be overwhelmend, asphyxiated, drowned eventually by that immersion of your soul in love, so as York said trying to explain the inexplicable core of the song it doesnt matter whatever you do for winning you are not going to have the last laugh but devil will. You can put the lights you want on the song but it itself will adrift towards darkness where it belongs.
Thom: “Street Spirit is our purest song, but I didn’t write it. It wrote itself. We were just its messengers; its biological catalysts. Its core is a complete mystery to me, and, you know, I wouldn’t ever try to write something that hopeless. All of our saddest songs have somewhere in them at least a glimmer of resolve. Street Spirit has no resolve. It is the dark tunnel without the light at the end. It represents all tragic emotion that is so hurtful that the sound of that melody is its only definition. We all have a way of dealing with that song. It’s called detachment. Especially me; I detach my emotional radar from that song, or I couldn’t play it. I’d crack. I’d break down on stage. That’s why its lyrics are just a bunch of mini-stories or visual images as opposed to a cohesive explanation of its meaning. I used images set to the music that I thought would convey the emotional entirety of the lyric and music working together. That’s what’s meant by ‘all these things you’ll one day swallow whole’. I meant the emotional entirety, because I didn’t have it in me to articulate the emotion. I’d crack… Our fans are braver than I to let that song penetrate them, or maybe they don’t realise what they’re listening to. They don’t realise that Street Spirit is about staring the fucking devil right in the eyes, and knowing, no matter what the hell you do, he’ll get the last laugh. And it’s real, and true. The devil really will get the last laugh in all cases without exception, and if I let myself think about that too long, I’d crack. I can’t believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song. That’s why I’m convinced that they don’t know what it’s about. It’s why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell every time I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of its meaning, like when you’re going to have your dog put down and it’s wagging its tail on the way there. That’s what they all look like, and it breaks my heart. I wish that song hadn’t picked us as its catalysts, and so I don’t claim it. It asks too much. I didn’t write that song.”
+Joshua Lessore To say he's pretentious implies he's lying. That's he's trying to make something "appear" to be what it isn't. Wake the fuck up! Music is fucking subjective. That's the problem with your personal projection. If you haven't figured that out yet you're a bigger idiot than I can imagine. Just because the song doesn't effect you as much as it effects someone else doesn't mean they're making it all up. Maybe he was just being sincere and not caring what other people think. He's talented enough he has the right to express himself as an artist. Who gives a shit if it doesn't effect everyone the same is him. I mean, I wish I had written that song as it describes my depression better than I can. Props to him for doing that. I've always wanted to write a song about the need people have to shoot down others emotions and discredit them. It's something I notice about a lot of people and society in general. Everyone is so desperate to be "cool" and unaffected. Maybe it's fear, maybe it's just not connecting. I don't know what it is exactly but it's definitely destructive. Lets shut down someone else's emotional expression by labeling it pretentious! That we we can feel cooler than that person! It's an interesting theme but I'm not as talented at expressing it poetically.
+Joshua Lessore actually there's really no way for you or anyone to know the HE wrote it. For all we know we are just biological catalysts being used as a means to transmit these intense feelings. Just sayin
this, Exec_SUSPEND, 818, Answer, Smiles and Tears, The Great Below, I got a whole list of stuff (some game, some not) that I want people to play when I'm gone.
Then you not only discovered a great song, you discovered a great great group. Have "fun" listening to this, how to disappear completely, 15 steps, exit music (for a film), etc
@@amm0niumI Asked my dad what’s his favourite radio head song and this was his first and only answer. Least I say, the man didn’t miss at all, this is a tune.
This song has so much heart and soul put into it. It's hauntingly beautiful. I wish today's music could be as good and meaningful as this. "Immerse your soul in love" is probably my favorite line in any song I've ever listened to.
I agree. It is one of those traps people fall into. When this song came out, people were also complaining about "today's music" despite masterpieces like his coming out. I suppose it becomes a bit harder to come across great music as you get older, but with a little effort there is always something wonderful to be found.@@gnomefrompinkerton
The funny thing is you can take it both ways, it can be a totally sincere message from Thom meaning every letter in that sentence, or it can be entirely sardonic, with the message alluding to the fact that in a very pessimistic and cynical way, that the meaning of life is actually suffering because this song is one of the most depressing Radiohead has ever put out, these songs are usually accompanied with a hopeful message in the end but with how gloomy this one is, it makes you doubt the message at the end at all or if there even was one.
my dad passed three days ago now & we shared such an immense love for this song. music was our love language. if it wasn’t for him, i wouldn’t know this song. the last conversation i had with him i remember i told him i had finally concluded that my favorite song of all time was this song. he went on to tell me how good of a song it was and asked me “have you seen the music video?” and i said “yeah, you’ve showed me a few times over the years. i love it.” and he responded with “yeah it’s pretty wicked.” planning on getting this song tatted soon. i hope he knows how much i can feel him when this song comes on. i miss him more than anything. i love you to the moon & back dad
I’m so sorry for your loss. Lost my mom as a teen and it absolutely fucking sucks. Recently played OK Computer for my dad he liked it but is a little confused still.
My sister passed around 4 years ago and I bore witness to her passing. Seeing the tweet by Mark Stokes made me feel so many things so intensely. Listening to this for my sister, for Mark, for the others who have stepped into the great unknown.
Amazing how a single piece of music can make you feel such aching agony one day and then uplift you & mend you from that same hurt the next day. This one is hands down my favorite Radiohead tune. It never fails to turn me inward to face whatever emotion I'm trying to shove far away from my heart.
Check out Nothing But Thieves. They're an awesome British rock band and Radiohead is one of their main inspirations. Their lead vocalist Conor Mason is also one of the greatest singers of this generation, if not of all time.
This was the first song i listened to after my dad passed away in 97. It was playing on the radio on my drive home from the hospital at 2am. Haunting beautiful. I can listen to it now and hold back the tears.
This being the final track on The Bends is really ominous in a way: you have an entire album of loud alternative rock, Britpop, big crunchy guitars, and then the last track comes along: these ominous acoustic guitars, no full drum groove for the first half, and lyrics that act as a precursor to the gloomy existential end-of-the-century crisis of OK Computer. On OK that existentialism is used to convey a sadness and a weariness - on Fade Out it sounds like Tom is desperately crying in horror. Many people say that OK Computer utterly transcended The Bends, but the themes and the tone is all in this last song - this would fit on OK Computer no doubt about it.
Back in the 90's at least Thom used to say he didn't actually compose this song, that it basically came out on its own and manifested in the studio. Up until The Bends at least they tried to keep a silver lining even in their most desperate compositions, but there was no sliver of hope in Fade Out. And he closed the question with a visible shiver, saying "I DID NOT make that song".
@@dragonmagoz There is still a sliver of hope at the end in this song I think, when he sings 'immerse yourself in love' as a way to escape the existential dread that permeates this song.
64yrs, I've now got quite the eclectic collection of music, of all genres, and I can easily say Radiohead/Thom Yorke are up there with the truly greats. Fabulous band 💜

That completely changed my perspective of the song, it was the darkest and most disturbingly sad song I had ever heard, that has just made it worse but it makes me appreciate it even more
Quite possibly the most haunting, terrifying and beautiful song ever written. Utter desperation in the words woven together with that melody gets me everytime
This was such an amazing song choice and it made that scene. I consider the show very mediocre, but I really enjoyed that scene with this song... even though that scene was forced on many levels. June wrestling aunt Lydia for that Baton for 14 seconds, then to waste another 14 seconds to decide whether or not to hit her and for that to result in 4 deaths. And also 6 handmaids with nothing left to lose are left alone in a truck with aunt Lydia, who is only equipped with 1 cattle prod, of course they're going to run. This is just atrocious writing, which so much of the show is.
I watched that scene and when this song came on, I was like, omg, Radiohead!!! This song fit that scene so well with June and the other handmaids escaping that evil aunt.
My dad passed away yesterday and now I'm making a playlist with all the songs he loved and I remember him by. This is one of them. Thank you dad for showing me the greatest artists of all times. Loved, missed and never forgotten 🤘🔥❤🙏
I saw Mark Stoke's tweet and was compelled to listen and understand his thoughts. I hope we all have a peaceful transition and family around us. Mark Stokes if you have already Faded out my guy, may you rest in peace!!!
I feel the same way about "Lucky". Some of Radiohead's songs are built to make you cry. I listen to them when I need that cathartic release. But it's not just sadness. There's beauty there too.
I listened to this song years ago when I was battling addiction, I listened to it when I felt like I couldn't win, like no matter how hard I tried something always knocked my back down. 2 months ago my premature daughter passed away on my chest. I was making good choices, I thought my fighting was over finally. Until I had to endure the worst pain I've ever felt. Now I'm back here listening to it all over again.
I am only 3 months old and just discovering Radiohead. Going from 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat' to this is quite a leap. But I really am loving deconstructing the chord progressions and the lyrics are nice and deep and speak to me on a level that " The Wheels On The Bus " simply can't any longer. Listening to Videotape now and despite my young age, this would be great, played at my funeral.
I've just discovered Radiohead and I'm 64, I've often read comments about Muse and Radiohead being similar not sure yet not listened to all their tracks... I Am a big Muse Fan seen them live lots. I'm going to enjoy getting to know Radiohead.. Better late than never. Steve Wright played this yesterday I was straight on you tube.
I remember I was really hurted when my ex broke up with me... I listened to Radiohead for a long time, feeling like the hole inside of me was filling up by their music. One day, I was walking on the street, going to nowhere, just enjoying the walk and started to rain. My headphones started to play this song. And there was the rain, this song, the street at night and me... Healing my heart. I'll never forget that day. Thank you Radiohead. Thank you for saving me every single day. Edited: 2 years after this comment. I'm really fine, still single haha. Just studying and trying to not become crazy for Coronavirus. Full of wishes of hope and joy for everyone (including people didn't like my experiencie).
I had no idea this was made to be a representation of hopelessness and it's no wonder why I found this song when I did. To whomever may read this I hope you know it will get better. Stay strong...
It was big of you to comment this which is 100 percent true..your kind words helped me through a rough spot. Along with the listening of this track like a million times...I cant explain my graditude..thank you buddy. Stay gold, stay human. Love yourself, your worth it.
What really? Are you sure about that? God, i had decided to listen to this because i didn't think it was. Edit: i am no longer as grumpy but I'm still leaving it here because it amuses me
At 59 and with a wide range of musical tastes which has fluctuated over the times...but still one of my all time favourites pieces...ive found Radiohead to be an absolute dream to drive too when working nights....
When you listen to this album in its entirety and then come to this at the end of it, it just kills you. No album in the history of music has ever closed out better than The Bends, nor has the ending of on album led to just how great a band would be on its subsequent albums. This song, this moment is one of the greatest moments in all of music, and as dark as this song is, as hopeless as its lyrics are, the song's beauty saves you when you hear it. It's possible this is the greatest song that's ever been written.
If it wasn't for this song, many of us, could not survive teenage yrs. Music is sometimes the only thing able to be present with pain and describe pain. Without this presence and allowence we can't go forward...
I just spent time in the hospital with a ruptured brain aneurysm and this band was playing in the background the entire time. Kept me calm, focused and hopeful. Far from depressed. Thank you guys for helping people in ways you probably don't even realize. I love you with all my heart, thank you
I started listening to this song a lot more ever since my grandmother had a stroke. I don't know why, just weird. Radiohead in general has become a go to for me in the last months.
Sorry to hear about your grandmother. My pops died from massive heart attack exactly a month before my 17th birthday and Radiohead played a big part on keeping my sanity.
Matthew Kerns sorry to hear about that. Radiohead has something about them that just kinda helps you cope with shit. Thats a big reason of why I like them.
Listening for Mark Stokes, I didnt know him, but followed his battle with cancer for the past few months on Twitter, he said goodbye and this song was his last post. In some weird way this made me feel my own mortality in an overwhelming way. Their bravery and facing the end of their life was strangely beautiful and almost poetic. I dont know if hes passed yet, but I hope he goes peacefully and rests in peace.
Here because of Mark @StokesNeuro Clearly his tweet is touching so many people to come and listen. Sometimes a message or a story stops you and brings a momentary focus. Sending love and peace to you and your family.
This song has a purpose, and it isn’t to inspire joy, sadness or anything remotely close. It’s simply a realization that we all have something to face that isn’t what we want, what we need or what will help. It’s the end and we have to deal with finality.
People always say whos listening in 2024? Whos still listening in 20-whatever....if i live to 100 I will still be listening to this song in 2077. This song just takes me places mentally and emotionally that no other does. This song embodies the power of music for your mind and soul. Best song of all time.
Mr Richard parker I can play Simple Man and Street Spirit on guitar and though the chord structure is similar, Street Spirit is much harder to play and feels much better when you do
First heard this song on Dec. 22, 2024 while watching Season 1, Episode 4 of "The Day of the Jackal" starring Eddie Redmayne. So beautiful!! It kind of gives me "System of A Down" vibes.
Street Spirit has got to be one of the best songs of our modern age...awesome riffs and a haunting melody that keeps building until it penetrates your soul.
This is one of Radiohead’s best songs

I can feel their blue hands touching me
All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
And fade out again and fade out
This machine will, will not communicate
These thoughts and the strain I am under
Be a world child, form a circle
Before we all go under
And fade out again
And fade out again
Cracked eggs, dead birds
Scream as they fight for life
I can feel death, can see its beady eyes
All these things into position
All these things we'll one day swallow whole
And fade out again
And fade out again
Immerse your soul in love

i remember when i first listenned to The Bends in the 90's, this song and fake plastic trees appeared magic to me, better than my iron lung which led me to this album; strangely Creep became famous after this album eventhough it was released on Pablo Honey which was prior to the Bends;
Yeah. I mean, I don’t get why a lot of people give this record sh*t. It’s fantastic. Especially this particular piece
Couldn't agree more
I love you thom yorke♥️♥️♥️♥️
This song is about the passage of time, and the realization that everything is effected by death. If you listen to the rhythm, it sounds like a ticking clock. Also the steady rhythm could represent a heartbeat, and symbolize how much time a person has left. The whole song seems hopeless at first, like death always happens and there is nothing we can do to change it, but it has the best redeeming quality at the end when Thom says “Immerse your soul in love”. Basically he’s saying that life is too short to live in hate, and that we need to make the most of each moment by loving each other.
Perhaps we could play it to the 'government' ?
no, it means that love makes the suffering worthwhile, which it doesn't. it is just another sort of suffering.
You are a sad man, like me, but at least I'm grateful for those sufferings, they are life experiences and must be lived
@Amber_xo_133 This song reminds me of Zeit by Rammstein. Very similar connotations about passage of time. Have a listen if you can 🙂
that phrase is metaphorical that can be interpreted as you say to love each other but it conveys also a more tragic and misterious connotation that is stronger than the easier one of loving, in fact the verb used as imperative "immerse" suggests that you are compelled to do that but realising that you are going also to be overwhelmend, asphyxiated, drowned eventually by that immersion of your soul in love, so as York said trying to explain the inexplicable core of the song it doesnt matter whatever you do for winning you are not going to have the last laugh but devil will.
I’d crack…
Our fans are braver than I to let that song penetrate them, or maybe they don’t realise what they’re listening to.
I didn’t write that song.”
mappy54 damn...
it had to be written
+Joshua Lessore Can we just take a minute to enjoy the music?
+Joshua Lessore actually there's really no way for you or anyone to know the HE wrote it. For all we know we are just biological catalysts being used as a means to transmit these intense feelings. Just sayin

This song has so much heart and soul put into it. It's hauntingly beautiful. I wish today's music could be as good and meaningful as this. "Immerse your soul in love" is probably my favorite line in any song I've ever listened to.
Yes.
I was 15 when this song came to us. Since then, I still get emotional when I hear it. Thank you Radiohead for being part of my life.
This is the song that should be playing globally minutes before the apocalypse.
Just before the Cure's 'A strange Day'.
Adding two: 'Sounds of Silence' and So Long, and Thanks For All The Fish' A Perfect Circle.
And after too
This doesn't depress me but makes me feel something really deep
Masterpiece
I feel nothing and this song accepts that
Yes, it has a quality that's hard to define 👍👍

What
my dad passed three days ago now & we shared such an immense love for this song. music was our love language. if it wasn’t for him, i wouldn’t know this song. the last conversation i had with him i remember i told him i had finally concluded that my favorite song of all time was this song. he went on to tell me how good of a song it was and asked me “have you seen the music video?” and i said “yeah, you’ve showed me a few times over the years. i love it.” and he responded with “yeah it’s pretty wicked.” planning on getting this song tatted soon. i hope he knows how much i can feel him when this song comes on. i miss him more than anything. i love you to the moon & back dad

All these years later. I'm now 44 and this still sends shivers up my spine. I wish music like this would come back.

Many people say that OK Computer utterly transcended The Bends, but the themes and the tone is all in this last song - this would fit on OK Computer no doubt about it.
yes. The Bends = OK Computer
same level of perfectness
The bends is better than OKC
Back in the 90's at least Thom used to say he didn't actually compose this song, that it basically came out on its own and manifested in the studio. Up until The Bends at least they tried to keep a silver lining even in their most desperate compositions, but there was no sliver of hope in Fade Out. And he closed the question with a visible shiver, saying "I DID NOT make that song".
@@dragonmagoz There is still a sliver of hope at the end in this song I think, when he sings 'immerse yourself in love' as a way to escape the existential dread that permeates this song.
Duh.
64yrs, I've now got quite the eclectic collection of music, of all genres, and I can easily say Radiohead/Thom Yorke are up there with the truly greats. Fabulous band 💜

I love this song but that has to be the most goddamn pretentious thing I’ve read in recent memory.
Quite possibly the most haunting, terrifying and beautiful song ever written. Utter desperation in the words woven together with that melody gets me everytime
Stephen Pitcher It's terrifying, unnerving and profoundly melancholic. Possibly the only piece of music that makes tear up everytime I hear it.
One of the all time classics, and I've been listening to music for well over half a century. This is up there with the very best.
As a Radiohead fan, hearing this on the Handmaid's tale gave me GOOSEBUMPS.
Best show ever created
Handmaids tale is shit. This song is amazing.

I love the melody and eerie voice, but I also think the mind that wrote this song is a very sensitive, and tormented one.
painful
This is what we mean when we call them artists . So many modern groups don't deserve that as a title radiohead and Thom Yorke do .
