My father-in-law was from Fanna, in Friuli. I made this dish for my husband tonight and he said it was delicious!! Thanks for sharing this. We love watching you!
I'm definitely going to try to make this. I'm native American and live on the reservation my husband and children are all native as well. My hubby knows my dream is to visit Italy and to eat some real Italian food. It's on my bucket list and one day I'm hoping this dream can come true.
Don’t give up that bucket list. My grandfather was born in Napoli and my whole life. I wanted to go to Italy. I never thought I was going to make it. My beautiful sweet daughter took me for my 60th birthday. It was one of the best experiences of my life, Roma, Napoli and Positano all beautiful places and the food is absolutely amazing. Once you eat in Italy, you will absolutely understand what he’s talking about when it comes to the chemical taste. I could not believe how clean and fresh all the food was. We thought we were going to gain weight. The food was so clean and fresh and we did not and we ate a ton of food. It’s such a beautiful country too, I really pray you get there one day.
As someone who lives in Switzerland 🇨🇭 and i think i can help with the pronunciation. The cheese comes from the area of Gruyères, Fribourg and is one of the most iconic cheese out there. Since the area primarily speaks French the name is pronounced in a very French way. Ao its Gruyère i.e. Groo - Ye-r (the r is from the throat, the french R). Cheers, love your videos ❤
I cried for almost 2 yrs missing my family when l migrated to Australia and food was so difficult in 1978. Our trips to Sydney was the highlight of my life getting ingredients to cook Malaysian food. So l feel for Alessio and his homesickness.
Omg! My Irish great grandmother fell in love with (and often traveled to) Italy in her younger years. She passed in 2012. But she would make a dish she called “cheese potato “ which was thin slices of potato and onion layered with parm & Gruyère and cooked until a crispy golden brown. I’m realizing now that she was probably trying to make Frico! Thanks for sharing this recipe. I love making my grandmothers version, but will definitely try the Friul way ❤️
Hi Jessi&Alessio, I have been living in Germany for almost nine years and I am originally from South Carolina. The winter is the hardest time of the year for me ,especially in our area, which my husband calls Deutsche Suppe.-German Soup.He goes out of his way to spoil me during those times when I am super homesick and can make fantastic pulled pork BBQ and takes me to Düsseldorf to a place that makes some of the best Nashville hot fried chicken I have ever eaten😊. Thank you for sharing your recipe for Frico we both love Kartoffeln and will be adding this to our recipes we need to try list.
You have made me smile, laugh and cry at this video. I do not leave in my homeland, for reasons of love too. I am not italian but I need some Frico now in my life. Grazie Mille !
Great vid! It make me smile when Alessio named the "Sagra del frico di Carpacco" because I went there last summer (I am from the neighbour region of Veneto) after I heard they made the best frico in Friuli, and they were right one of the best I had!
I know how Alessio feels about homesickness. It reminds me of my maternal grandpa that I've never met (as he died before I was born) but heard stories about from my mom. My maternal family from Cuba first came to the NY metro area before the Cuban Revolution, as they didn't like Batista. They lived in New Jersey but until the early 70s, as my maternal grandpa felt homesick as he missed Cuba's weather, so he wanted to move to Miami as it was the most like Cuba. So they ended up moving down there, and although they liked Calle Ocho, my mom said they felt isolated as they had to do everything by car. The family ironically felt homesick for the NYC metro, as they missed the walkability and transit freedom that the NYC metro area had (this was before Miami even had transit). My mom also hated the warm weather and preferred NYC's cool climate. So they ended up moving back to the NYC metro. Where she would live in Rego Park, Queens and the Upper West Side (when those areas were still cheap), meet my father, and would have me in the early 2000s.
My family is Cuban too! Yes homesickness is very hard. Especially when you’re from a place you do not feel safe returning to. I’m away from Miami right now and sometimes I feel homesick. We take what we have for granted
My family is from Udine! It's so cool to see someone from the region online because I know very little about it! Someday, I hope to visit my family and eat all the food! I will try to make frico this weekend. Thanks for showing us how!
Grazie per far conoscere al mondo il nostro Friuli, un abbraccio grande e simpri fuarce Friul! Thank you ever so much for this very amusing video, God bless you both ❤
Mandi!! Don't worry if you never heard of this dish, nobody never did. It's absolutely kept a secret of friulani people to not have to export all the good Montasio cheese to the US 😉 Even in Europe nobody knows about Frico. My family is from Friuli, provincia di Pordenone and obviously I eat Frico every time I go there. Also good combined with salame in aceto, thick pepperoni slices fried in balsamico vinagre 😙👌 I certainly gonna try your recipe, since I live in Mexico I have no access to Montasio cheese. Good job, please more recipes from Friuli!! grazie ciao ciao
Gruyère is pronounced Groo-yehr (this is what anyone with a culinary background will tell you), and while many think it comes from France because of its French name, it's actually from SWITZERLAND! It's named after Gruyères which is in the canton of Fribourg, where French is spoken by more than two-thirds of its citizens (French is spoken in the western part of Switzerland in general)! Just over two thousand people live in Gruyères as of 2018! The eagle he's wearing on his shirt is the flag of Friuli, which was created in 1334...making it the SEVENTH oldest flag in Europe! Though my favorite fact I like to give about Friuli Venezia Giulia is that a part of it, Trieste, was once its own independent territory called the Free Territory of Trieste in the aftermath of WWII from 1947 to 1954. This happened as part of the Treaty of Paris of 1947 to cool down tensions between Italy and Yugoslavia as the area was mixed between the Italians, Slovenes, and Croats. Its administration was divided into two areas, one being the port city of Trieste with a narrow coastal strip to the northwest (Zone A; now Italy) and the rest was Zone B (now the Slovenian coast and Croatia's Istrian Peninsula).
Ok I made this tonight and it came out great. My wife loved it and wants it again. I had the same problem with the pan burning and had to use a second pan. Thanks!
This is my first time watching your channel,, you guys are fun to watch and informative. My grandma used to use fresh oregano , and fresh parsley in her frico.
So yeah I need Frico too! I love the way Jessi always thinks of something to make her Amore Alessio feel better! I will not stop saying this guys you are so blessed to be together! May your love grow stronger day by day and your hearts are filled with joy! What is that Alpi song? Can you write the name? Your happy dance is just so cute and authentic! Lots of love!
A good family friend of ours was from San Martino al Tagliamento, when he first tasted the Rösti we make near Fribourg in Switzerland he said that this was exactly the same. Of course we use Gruyère as it is made in our region, of course we use onions mixed under, and of course we use raw potatoes. The cheesy crust ist the fabulous part!
This is my wife's potato casserole recipe except she uses cheddar cheese and bakes in the oven. This looks better since the Frico has more crunchy "edge" which is the best part.
Fantastic! My Italian mother-in-law uses a brown paper bag with paper towel over it to drain all her fried foods ie cutlets . I feel that would work perfect for this too! 👍Thank you for sharing ❤
This looks amazing! I might have to attempt to make this for my Italian-American husband. His great grandpa was originally from Sarno before he immigrated to the states.

As an American living in Italy (Uno reverse!), I truly feel for Alessio. The holidays are especially difficult. What a wonderful way to respect his culture, bring a piece of home to the US, and have a fun date night in the process!

My family would make frico with only potatoes and a mix of 3 cheeses, no onions. Looking forward to trying this version when we visit my mothers area this summer! Hopefully we can find it!
My mom is English but married to an Italian (from Calabria), she does something similar but no cheese (she’s not a fan) - she uses left over potatoes and vegetables from a roast dinner and fries them all together. The potatoes get brown and then you eat. Looks very similar to frico - so delicious.
I made it today. I found the Montasio in NJ! It was delicious even though I took some liberties with the recipe. (I couldn’t find the grater so I cubed the potatoes). Next time I’ll do it right!
