A typical rural small town in southwest China, over 400 million people live in tonws like this.

  • The rural small towns represent the most typical residential areas in China, particularly in the southwest where tens of thousands of such towns exist. These areas are home to a significant portion of China's lower-income population. Unlike large cities, there are no towering skyscrapers or well-developed road systems in these towns. The economy is not highly developed, and residents often seek livelihoods through migrant work. Those who remain in the small towns are primarily the elderly and children. These towns encapsulate the authentic living conditions of China's lower-income population.

      Try to allocate McDonald's , KFC, or Starbucks before you go, they usually have clean place for you to chill out.
      Don't feel that's too "tourist" or too "western", the locals do the exact same thing, and that's almost the most local thing you can do.
      Bring your own toilet paper and maybe buy some beverage from the restaurant, that's what the locals do too.

    Lived and taught in China for six years. My favourite experiences have been in small rural towns in Yunnan province and Guizhou province where the people are much more friendly and genuine than the typical tier one/two cities.The air and water quality are substantially better and food safety is much less an issue. The cost of living is much lower and the peoples' connection to their true culture is stronger and more vibrant. And never once did I fear for my safety.

Being an 'old incident' I wonder why it still comes up at the first result in 2024.
      If you still wish to deny then ask the ' Beijing Industry and Commerce Bureau '
      If it is just an 'old incident' then why did the Chinese government go to the trouble of establishing a series of policies and laws to regulate the oil market, ban gutter-oil-related activities, and punish those who violate the laws? Enjoying the video in FLorida, USA. Quick impression from America: I'd call this a city! MILLIONS of people in America live in worse places, maybe MUCH worse! I'm getting the idea that this is regarded as being poor because it's not Shenzen or something, it's not all covered with video displays, I don't know. This might look like a kind of heaven to about a third of the population of the US, and maybe most of the population of say Central America or South America! Let's talk about crime: Looks LOW CRIME to me! Can you tell by looking at a few seconds of video? Americans can! How many of these people we see are carrying guns? How many are homeless? Quantity, quality and variety of food look very good, no "food desert" like we constantly hear about in the US. Lots of multi-story buildings, some high-rises, many signs of air-conditioning and satellite dishes... No shortage of wine and liquor! I didn't catch the name of this place but five minutes in to the video I already think "I could live there!". It looks "moderately prosperous", and not dangerous or severely declining. I have lived personally in MUCH worse places than this! An aside: I'm always amazed at the variety of vehicles I see in any video from China. There are whole classes of things we don't have.

    It does not matter big town or small town, if you pay attention to details, you will find that the streets arevery clean - unlike in India, Burnma, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia. Cars are parked properly and not blocking half the road. There is water and electricity in every home. People are neatly dressed and no beggars around or people living in the streets. There are no corpse on the road nor potholes. All these reflect the acceptable level of living and social discipline. One do not see policemen at every corner of the street - if you do, it means high crime rate. There are no abandoned buildings or broken-down houses.

Notice some restaurants even have chairs with easy comfortably back rests for diners, meaning the diners can probably eat and rest there for hours!!! In fact, the southwest has been known for underdevelopment over scores of years. By contrast, small towns in the eastern or middle regions of China have better infrastructure. China is such a huge country that infrastructure development varies greatly. If you go to Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Shandong and Fujian, you'll see a completely different scene.

It's a mixture of the smell of traditional tobacco that some elderlies were smoking, smell of the wooden walls and doors, smell of burning barley stalk ( or maybe something else, basically inedible part of a crop), smell of diesel engines, and smell of the cloudy or rainy days.
    Smoking in public places is now illegal in some cities of China, as is burning crops. I don't know if this law would have any effect in a small town like this.

    I would say yes there are shops in China selling used refrigerators on the street as this video purports to show but the figure 400 million people live in such condition is stretching the imagination a bit far.
    My counter argument is simple. According to Wikipedia the automotive industry in China has been the largest in the world measured by automobile unit production since 2008. That is consecutively 15 years. Last year the vehicle output was 27 million out of which 3.11 million were exported. That means 24 million new vehicles are destined for China's domestic consumption! Is this large can be ascertained by the second runner up car producer the US made 10 million cars in the same year. Let's say US exported none and so the Americans consume the entire 10 million car production domestically. That is less than half the new cars what the Chinese have produced for domestic consumption in 2022! If this video does show car ownership is widespread in China
    Nobody expects China to become rich overnight because back in 1988 every African country has a higher GDP per capita than China except two. Uganda and Bissau Guinea. Is today China moving in the right direction economically? When people's living standard is improving the streets are neater and everywhere will be cleaner.

    • @Gepap3
      @Gepap3 5 місяців тому +8

      Why is there a need for a "counter-argument"? The PRC has 1.4 billion people. 400M is 28% of the population. Also, the conditions this video shows are not glamorous, but maybe the person filming or you haven't been much around the world, but they are very typical of low middle income areas of the world. The streets aren't filth ridden, the roads are paved in and decent conditions, lots of motorized transport, and there are some high rises in the distance, so I am not sure this actually represents the sort of rural living the person who posted the video actually wants to show. These conditions are entirely common globally, if not in the rich countries of the "developed world" that make up less than a fifth of humanity.
