They only require it after your sophomore year after taking your pre-requisites for a general art major degree. Also at most universities the population in your specific major isn't that small. Biana Bova Yeah My university treats everyone like they have no prior experience, so they only do a portfolio review after you've taken 2 years of entry level classes. Also my art building is open 24 hours and there is an option to live in a dorm with art students so you can be completely immersed in art. Even in the library there is an art museum with individual rooms to study in, There are sculptures all around the campus and their are a group of kids that actually come up with crafts for other students with other majors to do. To be honest, I'm happy with my decision of going to university first. As an aspiring artist, I want to broaden my knowledge as much as possible (even outside of the art sphere). Only now I'm realizing that art is inexplicably tied to anything (art imitates life). In simpler terms, I believe an artist should learn as much as possible.

What this video is making me realize is that I might be better off starting at a University and then maybe going into a graduate program at an Art School
Ive been thinking about whether I want to transfer to a University, and I'm still kind of on the fence about it. I'm a graphic design major, and I've learned a lot at the school I'm going to right now, but I've honestly learned a lot more on my own. There are a ton of free resources out there and I was a little surprised to find that my design professor was pulling a lot of the material she was teaching us from UA-cam. I think the most beneficial thing that a University could provide me is resources and opportunities. I've been able to support myself financially through working as a freelancer by the things I've learned at school and what I've taught myself. My goal is to own and operate my own graphic design/photography studio and I'm honestly on the fence whether University will help me get there.
The biggest difference I saw was this: At many university art departments (especially if a college has a major called "studio art"), everything is kind of loose, the instructors don't teach but merely philosophize, and you can fudge assignments, because the standards aren't that serious. Someone from this kind of college art department would transfer to my art school, be fooled by the seeming informality of the place, and would slack off or do what they wanted the way they were used to doing at a regular college. The sucker punch came at the end of the semester, when the transferee from a college art department suddenly finds out he really was supposed to do all those assignments, and the actual assignments, not what he felt like substituting for them, and gets hammered on his grades. Might even flunk out.
James Kirchner well, i go to community college and major in studio art. I work my ass off to even try to get an A on any assignment/project. Some professors are so freaking difficult, they grade you so incredibly strictly. I am also learning a LOT i didn’t know previously, and have found a new interest within graphic design as well.. so, i don’t think what you’re saying applies all the time. I feel as if I’m really going to have a great portfolio and be ready for when I transfer to my nearby uni/art school. Also, I’m not dumb or anything, i have a 4.0 (majored in comp sci before this and ended up switching for reasons).
you're at MassArt!!! i was a Simmons student & then i ended up transferring to BU for Costume Design!! i looked into massart but i didn't want to be a fashion major and i was happier with the theatre program at BU. i always loved going to the art shows at mass art tho, it was nice to be able to visit a small art school if i wanted to while still being at my big university. & at BU our major was so small (like we had 16 people to start with and i think we graduated with 12?) so we got to have that small art school environment within a bigger university, which i found really refreshing. cause sometimes you just need to not take a studio class, you know?
!!!! Omg you're so lucky, that's about as best of both worlds as you can get!! Holy shit I feel you so hard on the tiny major thing like uconn had 1 painting major. /ONE/. But we were all like family so it was cool xD. And yESSSS I am SO with you on needing a break from the studio. Like massart is technically bigger cause it's 2000 art kids vs 200 but sometimes it's claustrophobic? Probs not the right word but omg getting a break from the art life is so great xD
I’ve been debating about whether I should go to art school or art major at a university for a long time, and this really helped me out! Thanks for the facts!
This is really helpful! A while back I was trying to search for this topic, but hardly anyone talks about it! I'm going to university for graphic design, and wasn't sure if art school would have been better, and watching your video made me feel much less torn. Thanks!
This is by far the very best video I’ve seen on this topic. You consider so many important points I didn’t think about, or have wanted to see discussed! Wishing you the best. Thanks for the video! Very helpful for a current senior in the midst of the college app process.
Your videos have been so helpful! I’m a transfer student and massart is looking like my top choice but I’ve been struggling with that vs a university. Thank you so so much!
I am currently at the beginning of my third year at a university. However, just a few weeks ago, I applied to two art schools as a transfer student. My university has been pretty great. The professors are amazing and I have met some incredible people. The department is still small so everyone pretty much knows each other which is really nice. My personal reasons for trying to transfer were similar to the ones said in this video. I found that an education from a university is geared towards creating portfolios that are more commercial based. I am looking for a more specialized education where I can focus on my portfolio. The general education classes can be interesting but some of the classes like biology, political science, etc. aren’t necessarily interesting to me. Quite frankly, I find them to be a waste of time for what I’m specifically looking for. When looking at the courses offered at art school, there are a lot more options to explore specific areas within your field which I found the most appealing about art school. There are also all kinds of art schools and universities with programs that differ greatly so it is all about doing research and knowing what kind of education you are looking for. If you are looking to transfer, I would do so as early as possible just because not all of the credits you take (especially the general education classes) will transfer to an art school. The one downside that I found was cost but there are lots of scholarships and options available so I would not let those numbers discourage you, especially if you have a solid portfolio and decent grades. Pick schools that you think would be best for you, not what other people think will be. I wish you all the best of luck finding the path that is right for you!
Wow, you did just a great job discussing the differences! Thank you so much! I wish I had this when I was applying to schools, but I am glad I got the wider experience in Liberal Arts. Now I'm thinking about grad schools...
I love how someone actually made a video like this. But I really think this video doesn't refer to the overall setting. Only two "schools", whereas if you go to some universities the classes, communities etc are the same as you defined art school. But i 100% agree on the portfolio and selection process, as a University student they did focus a bit more on our grades, but in the end it just benefits you as an individual. Thank you for this amazing video. Gained a new subscriber ❤
thank you for this... i just finished my first semester as an art major at a university and i was feeling anxious and wondering if i made the right choice. this helped me a lot
This made me so happy to read cause I had that exact same anxiety as you when I was in high school and at uconn. Literally makes my day to know that I'm reaching out to people like you who need the help so thank you ;U;
thank you sooo much for this video I have recently started going to a university as an art major and I was so depressed that I didn't applied for an art school but when you said professors are more likely the same and they will teach you on the same level made me a bit more confident about my choice 😘😘
thanks your videos are always helpful!! I'm not sure whether anyone else or you have experienced this when going to a non art school but the students there (especially those in a science/engineering major), when you tell them you're an art major, they almost look at you in a "oh good luck with that" sort of look lol. Maybe it's just me? I mean it doesn't bother me too much but I wonder if that happens in art schools with different art majors.
LMAO you just summarized my uconn life to a t!!! I was almost exclusively friends with science majors and there was DEFINITELY a lot of that. Not like explicitly rude but not exactly subtle either, ya feel? And unfortunately, there is some of that at art school, like everyone generally accepts that graphic design majors will have an easier time finding jobs and no one knows wtf glass blowing majors do after graduation (...99% sure we have a glass blowing major, maybe don't quote me on that xD;; ) But idk in both cases it hasn't affected me or really any of my other art major friends so whatevs it's just a thing
Thank you so much! I wasn't too sure if I should go to an art school or a regular university but after watching your video I feel more sure about what school I should go to.
im a junior and I want to major in art when i get to college, (when i figure out where i go) It would be my dream just to make art everyday. I practice painting, watch tutorials and try to follow them but i know that i need more than just that. Im going to keep practicing and get better. But then its the choosing which schools/universities to apply for. Art supplies alone can be pricey and school is another story. Thanks for this video! it helped a lot!
You touched on this a little but students need to also look into the job scope after graduation. Graduation means nothing if you can’t get an entry level position with that degree
Hi and nice video! This kinda stuff I think about a lot and I was at MICA in the late 60's. Before MICA I went to a two year community college (also an art major there) At the community college we had very few art majors. Of the few art teachers there were two of them were great!! Fantastic fine artists and really cared about there students! That was pure luck I think...a roll of the dice that was lucky. These two teachers were as good as the best at MICA and seemed to put forth more effort to teach. Some of the teachers at MICA were also good teachers as well but seems many are teachers were just a warm body in the room. So interesting on what your saying about all this. As Paul Harvey used to say "Now for the rest of the story." That is what happens when students get out of art schools or regular colleges.....and how many maintain their art interest or never pick up a brush again.
I'm nowhere near going to college anytime soon but I just like to build up on knowledge for the future I love your vids your voice is soothing. Very helpful vid
I go to a college here in Alberta, Canada and the art program is phenomenal. Mainly because we had a protest to get a bigger budget for better supplies. My tuition was only $6097CAN and its amazing! I mean its a cheap tuition but the supplies are what brings up costs! I love my program but its really awesome that i can pick a minor thats not arts related! I love Fine Arts, but i also really love my minor in music! This is amazing advice! I wish everybody who is struggling good luck! Its amazing once you get there!
Boho Stevie Nicks not if it's ACAD (standing for Alberta College of Art and Design), that's a full degree granting university (only BFA or BDES however) it also includes an MFA program
I just graduated high school and I'm so lost on what to do about art as a career. I live in VA and VCUarts is pretty much the best and only in-state option I've got but it seems very "fine arts" based and I'm not a fan of that considering I'm an animation kind of guy. I wanna be able to draw how I want within the curriculum that the school has. Yet I'm still stuck on whether its better to go there or a place like SCAD, I got accepted but didn't go because of financial problems white is pretty much my only real hurdle that can't just go away. Good lord this sucks
Just wanna say, I love all your videos so much. I'm an artist but I don't plan on going to art school/majoring in art (i want to major in physics of all things) but all of your videos are super informative an entertaining to watch still? And your art is beautiful (and so are you. Seriously i'm jealous of your hair it's so cute) but yeah keep making awesome art and awesome videos!!
Im not sure if this is a Canadian only thing but i didnt need a portfolio for my program. Just grades. I got accepted and when im done my second year, i use the assignments from my first two years as my portfolio to transfer to either a university or art school!
this is so helpful! im currently getting acceptance letters to art schools and liberal art schools and I need to decide where to go soon. After watching some of your videos i think i might actually go to massart
That's cool that you're attending (or are finished now) at Mass Art! Mass Art turned me away from attending there about four different times, telling me that I needed to attend an industrial design college (for car design). I ended up attending the Academy of University, located in San Francisco, CA (from 2004-2008), then transferred down to Art Center College of Design located in Pasadena, CA (2009), then I also studied at the Concept Design Academy (also located in Pasadena, CA, in 2017). I'm happy that everything has seemed to work out well for you at UConn and at Mass Art! 😁
Thank you so much for taking about professors, I'm an art major and about to leave my community college to go to a university because I can't afford art school
I’m literally transferring out of UCONN this semester and going to an art school!! I’m so excited to be surrounded by artist and art. I didn’t like being at UCONN for art because I had to take all these bullshit classes that had nothing to do with my major. It was a pain because I had to take a bunch of classes that I had no interest in and that I wasn’t good in so it really affected my gpa. I’m super excited to go to an art school that focuses on art only and be apart of that type of community! On the downside I practically got a free ride at UCONN which was nice and super stress relieving, but it’s kind of pointless if they don’t have what I want or satisfying what I need
I've been thinking about this a lot lately, along with other things, and thanks so much for making this video! This definitely answered some of my questions that I've been wondering about... also: your art and advice are both amazing
its always confused me how US university makes students take classes irrelevant to their degrees, in australia the most we do is history, but history of your major. when i did design i took design history classes, and now in animation i take animation and film history classes, but not science and maths? its so strange, why waste students time and energy to make them take classes they wont care about
this helped so much!! in the next year I will be applying to and choosing a college, and since I have both options available in my state, it is a hard choice. seeing the senior work is something that I had not thought to consider, but it makes a lot of sense and I definitely will!
When I applied to my uni for illustration, they were pretty relaxed with existing grades. They told us they just look for potential, not the grades. (One friend didn't have much good grades and shes a decent artist and she got in.). So I'm guessing the UK dose a lot different from the US. Its just the art projects, dissertation and business studies. I don't think that we have 'art schools' here, its uni or college mainly, if anything your art school is more like our universities.
This is really helpful! But, I am still having such a hard time in choosing Uni vs Art School because it's so expensive. I'm willing to go into debt if that means I can get a good chance in getting a job after college. However, the Art School I'm interested in called SCAD seems to lie about the job graduate thing:/ And! I really like meeting diverse people and not the same demographic:(
hi biana!! this video is super helpful, thank you so much for uploading. i was actually really excited watching this video bc you mentioned that you went to massart. i attended massart for my freshman year right out of high school but now im taking a LOA. this video is really helpful!!
I'm actually applying to both UCONN and MassArt and some other schools and I'm having a tough time deciding if I want to go to University or am actually art school and this was a very helpful video so thank you! I still have some thinking to do but I definitely have some new things to think about
your video literally spoke to me im a senior in high school i have bad grades not because im stupid but mainly because my time is consumed by art and reading my best choice is art school definitely
Thank you so much, Biana! That was very informative and I love how you explain in your video. I am dealing with this struggle of actually which part of art I want to get into. I am interested in fashion design, but I feel like i would feel limited if I go to just fashion. But I just love art in general! And I want to have the skills to be able to do many things in art! I am a senior in high school and I just don’t know which type of art is for me, yet! Help,
Me too! Now, I am in the same problem. Could you give me an advise? You wrote this comment 4 years ago, I would like to know how did you made your decision or which path did you took :)❤
This is a really helpful video-- I'm looking at transferring from my current university to either another (bigger) one, or an art school. It's sooo hard to decide, and all your points are things I've been considering. I've been leaning toward the university, but I'm still unsure.
Thank you for this video so much!! I really want pursue art as a career and I need to convince my parents that it is a viable career option. I’m doing so much research on this, so thank you for this video!!!
thank you for this video!!! my sister is pushing me to go to fsu and be an art major because she went there, she was an english major though, but i didnt really know if i wanted to do that or go to an art school. this helped me a lot but im still like undecided. i feel like i may want to go to a university instead of an art school
I actually don’t think there are art schools in Spain (not like anyone could afford one or want to go to one). There are thankfully universities that cost around 200-400€ a year that are public, not sure if the credits which is 30€ for every credit enter in that price, but it’s a lot more affordable for everyone. We don’t usually choose where we go, we just go to the closest and cheapest university of our major, very few people move to cities like Barcelona or Madrid to study. And I’m not sure because I haven’t gone yet, but in beauty arts and even “high school” you stop doing all of the classes that aren’t necessarily for your academics, like you have languages, philosophy and gym, but if you go to a good high school that wants to specialize you, you will be in your specific classes more than in the others. While in university, I think all of your classes are geared towards your major.
Hey The Mossy Cobble! I believe you have time to explore both even when you start college/ university! :) How did you get into acting and illustration?
Jasmine Hong I’ve been reading comics since I was a kid which got me interested in drawing. I also used to watch old films with my grandfather which got me interested in acting.
I like learning about a lot it may start an idea for my art. But my high school didn’t have a great art program. So I’m looking to step my game up at a collegian level. I hear at Scad it’s really focus and like you said I will spend a lot of time in the art room. I’m still not sure
Hey Jamar! I had a lot of friends who went to SCAD and said it really suited their artistic needs. What kind of art do you do and are you thinking about applying to art uni?

Probs not the right word but omg getting a break from the art life is so great xD
elonnabettini I like what you say. To me, art is a platform for learning and deconstructing anything.
My art school didn’t even ask for my grades sooo...
im hoping mine doesnt either
Which one did you go to?
Which one did you go to? Cause i need that right about now
I’ve been debating about whether I should go to art school or art major at a university for a long time, and this really helped me out! Thanks for the facts!
what a great video thank you so much!
Thank you 😊 for this. Im a junior in high school and this really helped me out 😊.
Her: Visit the campuses
Me: Laughs in corona virus
This is some excellent advice that still holds up today.
This is really helpful! A while back I was trying to search for this topic, but hardly anyone talks about it! I'm going to university for graphic design, and wasn't sure if art school would have been better, and watching your video made me feel much less torn. Thanks!
Omg ikr?! Like literally nothing, I went to page two of google and could find no answers xD So happy this helped you!!
I literally have been struggling so much with this and some artists say it's taboo to talk abt this, so i appreciate that you did!!
I know this video is old, but your hair is beautiful.
DUDE! This is legit my current situation with Ringling and my temporary University ❤️
Nice thank you for your review, I just finish my college application season! Definitely need this
thank you for this... i just finished my first semester as an art major at a university and i was feeling anxious and wondering if i made the right choice. this helped me a lot
This made me so happy to read cause I had that exact same anxiety as you when I was in high school and at uconn. Literally makes my day to know that I'm reaching out to people like you who need the help so thank you ;U;
Haha same. Just that I have now an BA. But I am thinking of taking a Master in an art school instead
Sometimes I just watch your videos randomly just to know something just in case
And also because I love listening to you and your voice
thank you sooo much for this video I have recently started going to a university as an art major and I was so depressed that I didn't applied for an art school but when you said professors are more likely the same and they will teach you on the same level made me a bit more confident about my choice 😘😘
Came here to figure out if I should go to art school or university for interior design 😩
This is so so so helpful!! I’m tea stressing about higher education, and it’s always a relief to find some good resources!
thanks your videos are always helpful!!
Thanks for this video! it helped a lot!
same I'm trying to find where I'm going to study
Super useful information, thank you for doing god's work!
that meow when you introduced your cat was so on cue, amazing actor
I'm nowhere near going to college anytime soon but I just like to build up on knowledge for the future
I love your vids your voice is soothing. Very helpful vid
Currently at a university and moving out of state soon, looking into an art school and I really needed to see this! Much appreciated
Krusher115 Is it considered the same as community college in Canada?
Which college ? ACAD? I'm in AB too 😬
Boho Stevie Nicks not if it's ACAD (standing for Alberta College of Art and Design), that's a full degree granting university (only BFA or BDES however) it also includes an MFA program
THANK YOUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!! i am deep in contemplation abt this rn so omg THABK U😭
The struggle of wanting to be a model maker for animation but also wanting to minor in the Spanish language 😅😞
Krusher115 damn thats smart
Wow your curls are beautiful . Sheesh😍
this is really cool. I like how objective you stayed :)
Thank you! This was so helpful! Your videos have made things a lot less stressful for me.
so glad i came across this video! ive been stressing about what kind of school to apply to!!! leaning towards university right now :)
Thank you!! I've also been trying to find info on this for ages and haven't had any luck
this is so helpful! im currently getting acceptance letters to art schools and liberal art schools and I need to decide where to go soon.
Thank you so much for taking about professors, I'm an art major and about to leave my community college to go to a university because I can't afford art school
im coming to massart in the fall!! :-)
Janine Bensen congratulations! 💕💕
How is art school? Are you liking it?
@@ava130 I absolutely love it! It is very stressful and rigorous but I don’t mind since it’s art. I love spending so much time on art
This was so helpful, thank you! But I don't think I'll be able to afford most art schools without a huge scholarships even if I get in..
I've been thinking about this a lot lately, along with other things, and thanks so much for making this video! This definitely answered some of my questions that I've been wondering about...
also: your art and advice are both amazing
Thank you!!! TuT I'm so glad you found this helpful!!
its always confused me how US university makes students take classes irrelevant to their degrees, in australia the most we do is history, but history of your major. when i did design i took design history classes, and now in animation i take animation and film history classes, but not science and maths? its so strange, why waste students time and energy to make them take classes they wont care about
this helped so much!! in the next year I will be applying to and choosing a college, and since I have both options available in my state, it is a hard choice. seeing the senior work is something that I had not thought to consider, but it makes a lot of sense and I definitely will!
Thank you and lots of luck next year!! :D
Art school vs University lifestyle
This video was sooo helpful wow. So glad I found your channel !
Thank you so much for making this video. It helped me to an extent you cannot believe
THANK YOUU this topic has been in the back of my head for a long time and time is just ticking away.😅
Thank you so much!! I've decided to go to University, but I wasn't completely sure before I watched this.
I'm actually applying to both UCONN and MassArt and some other schools and I'm having a tough time deciding if I want to go to University or am actually art school and this was a very helpful video so thank you! I still have some thinking to do but I definitely have some new things to think about
I'm still deciding whether I should go for a major in art or for something else.
Hi I'm in middle School and it's been my dream to go to college for my art but witch one was the prob but this vid IS PERFECT THX SOOOOO MUCH
Hey Galaxy Cat 711! What kind of art do you enjoy doing?
I wanted to go to an art school but the art schools I looked at didn't have what I wanted to major in so it's university for me!
your video literally spoke to me im a senior in high school i have bad grades not because im stupid but mainly because my time is consumed by art and reading my best choice is art school definitely
what did you end up going to? I’m a senior right now too !
@@zzzzcardboard well honestly I kept perfecting my art and fashion and picked up a career job so start funding things
I've been leaning toward the university, but I'm still unsure.
this just makes me more scared n confused
Thank you for this video so much!! I really want pursue art as a career and I need to convince my parents that it is a viable career option. I’m doing so much research on this, so thank you for this video!!!
you are a very sweet and helpful person! love the video too
This was hella helpful! Really enjoyed the video
Note: if you're going to graduate school, the programs will be much more studio-focused (unless otherwise stated by the school).
I've been seriously struggling trying to decide if I should go to an art school or university, I think this definetly helped me figure it out
thank you for this video!!! my sister is pushing me to go to fsu and be an art major because she went there, she was an english major though, but i didnt really know if i wanted to do that or go to an art school. this helped me a lot but im still like undecided. i feel like i may want to go to a university instead of an art school
Youre a queen for this video fr
I'm prolly gunna go to an art school but I'm going to Japan right after I'm finished
I pity you so much in the US!! University in Germany is soooooo much cheaper 😱😱😱
Katrina K Unless you're from Quebec. It only cost us around 3000 :)
I pay like 350 to 400 € every semester at my university in germany and I think there are even 'cheaper' ones 😄
Katrina K idk where in Canada you’re from but where I live it is much much cheaper
@@katrinak3235 its atleast $36000 per year here :,)
In the US
I'm a high school junior. I'm invested in both illustration and acting (performing arts) but I can't decide which one should I choose for a major.
Thank You for making this video!!!
THIS IS SO HELPFUL THANK YOUUU!
