I’m in art school and I got super lucky with my professors. A lot of professors think anime isn’t art or have some sort of stigma against it, but my painting and figure drawing professors both gave the class open projects as the final. I did anime for both. I spent the entire semester working with realism, so I wanted to apply what I had learned into my favorite style. My professors were very chill about it and even gave good feedback.
I wish I had your teachers😅
My teachers straight up said they didn't like the anime/manga art style
From what I understand about professors opinion and rejecting the idea of anime is that they hate the idea of it being to basic and being a formulaic style. The style they believe is too copy and paste and isn’t really challenging.
To sum it up basically they don’t want your material to be as basic as McDonald’s, they want you to develop a more diverse ranged menu.
I like anime, it can be artistic, but It can be kinda too typical.
@@whoknowswhocares885 Yes, that's how it is. They don't really want students to follow that formulaic techniques and look that anime has. Most professors just want you to experiment and develop with your style and not copy or paste the style constantly, which most beginners and even some intermediate artists do. Taking inspiration from anime and culture behind it is okay by most professors. However, some professors really do have a stigma against it because it's not the classical art they consider to be "real art."
I mean I don’t see why like no disrespect but a lot of art they praise is random squiggles a 2 year old would make.

Dude this was actually one of the most down to earth college experience / review(s).
Yo @Daidus have you seen Art School Confidential?
as a first year animation student i have seen:
- people unable to work due to wrist injuries around deadlines
- people not leaving the LRC for a week straight around deadlines (me included, i only ate from the vending machines)
- people hiding under the tables after the animation building closes for the weekend and then living in there until the monday so they can render on more machines as the render farm is frequently full
- a third year opened a coffee shop in the tech suite of the LRC (where the animation students are based) by filling a bunch of thermos' with boiling water and bringing a bunch of disposable cups
- a delirious wizard battle of the second years on their second all nighter in a row
- the bloodbath that was someone logging out of someone elses computer when it was rendering their 3d animation
This is great, I'd love to hear more
That last one was extremely understandable

He is absolutely right when it comes to art college. I took the same route and got a degree in 3D Animation as well at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. They teach you to be a jack of all trades because in the end you have to make your own demo reel by yourself displaying your skills. However, because I had some pretty good illustrative skills under my belt I ended up landing a job as a graphic designer instead of an animator. I still draw and practice hoping one day I'll get a job in animation.

Do you know any art history? Have you learned about what Jackson Pollock, the first impressionist painters have done? How they've changed the way we think about art and what that freedom allowed? Trust me, if you like art it's rather fascinating and admirable. Also, those teachers who do that clearly didn't pay attention in their schooling, and aren't great teachers. Though in HS I can see why they don't want to see that, if you're a student who legitimately thinks about jumping in to that career. The fundamentals are very important to get down first, makes everything else a lot easier. I've learned this the hard way
@@Chunkybungus I say when someone makes a painting, and the reasoning behind it is what makes it important, that means that person shoud hawe been a writer.
Because whatever you call "anime" is a stylization. A simplification of realism. To simplify realism successfully YOU NEED TO LEARN HOW TO PAINT IN REALISM FIRST. And your teacher is probably aware of what you are capable of. So when you hand them a stylised artwork, they know you copied the style and elements from the other artists (and copied their mistakes as well).

Bruh I feel like, my future is gonna be shit. I want to be a graphic designer, but looking at this video. Makes me highly depressed, and very anxious.
@Kemchi
I’m an animation major soon to enter junior year in my art school and if you are willing to put time and effort in fulfilling your dream, give it a shot. It’s definitely no easy walk of the park. I relate to the video (got good laughs out of it) but everyone’s experience is different. By the end of the day, it depends on what you want and how much time you want to put into it. There are drop outs for those not willing to, but life and decisions comes with risks. I say keep your head held high and see where you’ll go. If it doesn’t work out, always have plan B in mind.
I want to be a graphic designer too! But I'm probably going to minor in it. If it's what you really want to do, then go for it!
Kemchi I’m not even majoring in graphic design and I have two jobs in it. I feel like if you’re passionate and do things to learn the practice (UA-cam videos on random shit, like motion blur or adding sparkly lines helped me 8 years later), network, and show off your skills, then you can do it!!
I'm a nineth grade Aussie girl in Melbourne and I desperately want to become a fine artist. But because of the reputation that art school has. Like how it is a waste of time and won't get you a job unless you're really talented. Im also terrified of my future and it also does give me severe anxiety and depression. And I don't help it by watching videos or reading websites that contain this kind of stuff.
But I am hopeful since I was excepted into an art academy in school and my work was satisfactory. But it does kind of make me think I have some sort of chance in the future. Hopefully with enough practice and time I can become the fine artist I aspire to be. Because at the end of the day it all depends on what you want in your life and what job you will enjoy doing.
Erin is eh yes, you have the right attitude. I am doing a fine arts career in Argentina, I've learned that studying just for a stable job doesn't do the trick. People that hire you want you to solve their problems and have a nice attitude/work . So it will be fine, don't worry

Sorry man, I'm still going to art school.
After watching this video, for the past year and a half since release, I felt more inclined to go instead of not going to college or university after high school.
I never thought I would ever continue school after high school, but ever since you realized this video, I felt that I finally had an excuse for my parents to not worry about my future, they once thought they were going to be stuck with me until I was 30 (This was bad for me and them), but now they're sad that that may not be the case anymore (Basically, they care about me now because I have a 'realistic' future.
To me, the point of art is to break that 'realistic' code, but it gave the opposite effect for them.
I hate the word *realistic* with every fiber of my being, but our different perspectives towards the same journey, surprisingly held the same result, comfort.
Comfort in a definitive future.
As you said, that diploma is a great excuse for getting people off your back, and that type of power can be easily acquired through such a meaningless piece of paper.
Just because I'll have it, doesn't mean I'll use it!
I just want the fun that comes along with making animes and manga as an early living, finally making my way to game development and making many things that I've dreamt of for the better of humanity.
All of these things will be freelanced, so I won't work for anyone, I'll just make my own company.
Now, since I told you the long story, here is the short version:
Ever since I saw this video, I've been thinking, thinking about my future.
As well as everything I want to learn and accomplish throughout my early life, stretching far beyond my death timelessly.
- Thank you, and you're welcome for the most backhanded compliment in existence. You changed my mind on a life-changing decision, so, thank you.
*Rip independent bird*
As an architecture major I can confirm this is absolutely 100% true, no matter which university or which country you're studying in :')
Unfortunately, if either your school (or your talents) are mediocre, regardless of college course, you’ll end up jobless upon graduating. I’m now a bachelor’s degree holder and board passer, but I’m mediocre, so even if my school can recommend me, the company won’t hire me unless they’re in dire need of new staff.
I just draw day in day out these days in hopes of getting noticed in the internet, and then financial opportunities will start coming at me. (This doesn’t stop me from looking for a “regular” job of course). Also, hobbies keep people sane. Drawing keeps me sane, especially when negative thoughts get the better of me.
good luck
Eeeeeee. And I thought I was depressed
there are tons of firms that need graphic design, nice logos, publicity, a website, etc.
they rarely advertise that they need such services.
you're effectively a small business as an artist, so it's important to attend local chamber of commerce events or related meetups to see if they need help.
don't know if art school teaches sales or getting customers, but it's an essential routine.
what's your Twitter ?:)
The best advice that I can give you is to look for small opportunities to do. As an artist, you’re like a small business and should aim to do small, local projects or projects for small companies that want something new for advertisement or something.
I hope you find your groove with your art making

A part of me wants to go to art school, but I’m just terrified of the thought. I stopped thinking about what I wanted to be for certain hardships I’ve had and just now started to really truly think about it. I’ve heard people call art school a “waste of time” and only bigger egos make it there. As a shy introvert, the thought of this makes me scared. Not because I don’t have the talent but, because I don’t have the guts to speak up about anything. I have no idea what to do.
So you spend i think 4 years of teaching art to then draw anime?

My friend decided to major in art for a bit right after we graduated. She decided she didn’t like the way the program was run and changed her major before her bachelors. She was good at art and did very well, just didn’t see a reason to go through the stress of the program when she didn’t like how the ran it. She does still make art and sell it but she says she hated the environment of her art program and felt she learned far too little from it to make it worth continuing. I decided against going to any type of art program merely because I like to make my art for myself. It’s always been more a stress relief and never felt any need to turn it into a career. That doesn’t mean I’m against selling my paintings, I just didn’t feel a need to cater my art towards anyone else’s preference. I take advice from my art friends though. They give amazing advice. And frankly I learned a lot from them because we had an absolutely horrible art teacher freshman through halfway through junior year (though the other half of junior year was a long term sub, the best sub, but still not an amazing art teacher). We mostly taught each other and got through art classes out of sheer stubbornness. I’m not too sure I’d want to pursue an art focused degree. I like what I get taught and like making the connections with people that also art passionate over the same thing as me, but the way the programs are often structured leaves much to be desired. And they don’t tend to do the one thing I feel many artists want, which is set them up with the connections they need to be independent artists. Some do, don’t get me wrong, I know that much, but for the amount of art programs out there, there isn’t enough of them that do this. So when I take art classes I more do so casually or to help me set up my portfolio for this gigs I do find for myself that I find interesting. I probably do need to sign up for classes again though. With covid I stopped looking but I’d like to rework my portfolio and update it. The isolation may have given me more time to work but I feel my skills have slipped more than I’d like. I don’t think I will ever pursue art as a major or attend an art school. I have other passions that are just as important to me and I only intend to keep art as a coping mechanism and something I just prefer as a hobby. I like it, but not the career part of it enough to do full time.

Finally found a guy who hates the terms "introvert" and "extrovert" and the boxes people put themselves into by using these
I hate the "introvert" trend just admit you are shy or get help for social anxiety if you have that and live your life right. People sometimes label me as an introvert because I am quiet but I took after my father. We both don't talk much, but think a lot. He has like OCD or something tho he never got help for and I actually hired a doctor and like took peer to peer classes on mental illness so I could live a regular life tho. Sometimes I think there's a correlation between the self acclaimed introverts and shit like depression anxiety. I'm still quiet but I can like live a regular life and not freak out over "recharging my social battery" or whatever.
Just like the ppl that say that they have ADHD, like nah dawg you have been staying on tik tok all day and have fried your brain
I watched this when it came out and I thought that maybe I really should give up the thought of majoring in arts. Fast forward to 2020 and I'm a fine arts major (give this a read if you're considering it)
Do I regret my decision? No lmao I've wanted this since I was 4 and the tuition fee is pretty good
Is it stressful? Absolutely, especially since our system is set up so that your first year is a foundation year, to build up your visual library, train your muscle memory, help with your technique, and teach you all the basics from the ground up. It also includes the principles of engineering drawing for some reason but it's fun nonetheless.
If you find a good college with an affordable tuition fee, you'll also need to consider the fact that ART SUPPLIES ARE VERY EXPENSIVE.
This includes running to the store every two weeks because you're out of a specific type and size of paper, having to ask the upperclassmen for information on what type of supplies to get (and they came in clutch with a full list of everything we will need for the first year, along with their prices and where to buy them, love those guys) and even buying used stands and boards.
Upperclassmen, depending on where you are, at least in my college, are nice, they've been through hell so they know what it's like for us, and it's like a huge family tbh. Everyone's very helpful
The critique, if you can't handle it, is harsh. Still life drawing lectures are long, yes, but important for your muscle memory and understanding of light, shadows, shape and form.
One of the most important things you'll need is to learn how to do constantly is socialize. Your classmates might know something you don't, you'll have to constantly ask for critique and advice, whether it be from a friend, the TAs, or the professors.
Another thing is time management. If you aren't naturally good at this, it's going to be a tough first few months. To put it simply, do your work when you get it. Don't put off anything because you WILL get more assignments that you need to be prepared for. God forbid you stay up all night finishing assignments because you procrastinated, the last thing you want to do is attend a lecture with zero sleep. You really need all the sleep you could possibly get.
If you live far away from college, or don't have dorms, you absolutely must get a locker (if they're available) carrying the equipment around is a pain.
Your presence online is important, too, you can meet new classmates on your first week of you're all in an online group, get to know each other better, and this is standard stuff, but your social circle needs to be big. You'll need all the help you can get from friends who are absolutely willing to help. Whether it be schedules, extra supplies if you're broke, or heck, even mental support.
College takes up a lot of your time, and it's a huge change from high school, obviously. Sometimes you'll have to stay at college until pretty late at night to finish your work, some students have bought clothes to sleep over there.
TL;DR - you need to be absolutely sure that you want to major in fine arts. You have to socialize, be able to accept harsh criticism, and be good at time management. Sleep is important. Manage your funds well, don't cheap out on art supplies, you need to make them last, buy (or borrow) used items from upperclassmen if you need to.
What about getting a job in fine arts is that even possible
Do you regret it now? Life update
@@darkx6869 still no lol. I'm learning a lot :)
@@shrimpcrackers2415 it is but you'll need to make a TON of friends and connections, attend events, galleries, museums, participate in them, grow a portfolio and online presence too

Introversion and extroversion aren't about how outgoing you are. They're about what recharges you. Being alone helps you recharge? Introvert. Going out with friends or socializing helps you recharge? Extrovert. Somewhere in the middle? You might be an ambivert.
It's nuanced. It's a spectrum. Having Chronic Fatigue, it's difficult to say which I am, but I think ambivert makes the most sense, for me.
People misuse these words all the time. To the point where my mom and mom-in-law literally think introversion is *unhealthy*, and constantly try to "fix" me. It's ridiculous, and frankly tiresome.
Yeah, as someone who has some degree of social anxiety and depression, it's hard for me to say what I'm really am too! Thinking back at how I was when I was younger isn't very helpful either since I don't ever recall feeling "drained" or "charged" in different situations. I would feel loneliness at times, but I'm not sure that counts as feeling tired or drained in any way. Maybe I'm an ambivert but I don't know.

I agree, Architecture is incredibly hard and I applaud everyone who majors in it.
I'm personally a pre-med major and all my architecture/engineering friends are zombies but they love it.
It's up to you if you want to go to college. And if you do, it's okay if you dont know what interests you. Do the basics and see what you like. Have fun but you know, have morals. Those who don't want to go to college, you can still make your own way in life. Follow your passion. Stay safe, everyone.

The straight half, is split into two, the cool guys, and the dorky ones.
And even the cool guys can't get girlfriends cause 90% of the female population here is some form of LGBTQ+

Idk if this helps but Hayao Miyazaki actually have a degree in Politics and economics, and now he is an director of an animated movie (and there's more story's like that). That make me realize that Your success is determined what you do After you get that diploma. If your going somewhere that isn't art related, doesn't mean you just suddenly stop making art. It all comes to whether YOU want and/or Can go to art school. Do your research and deside for your self what you want to do (there's much more to art school that "Gravic design" and "animation") and remember, theres always other options.
But should YOU go to art school?
That's for you to desided.
and for the comic thing it's just the matter of you doing it. you don't need a diploma to tell you if you can or cannot make a comic (you can upload your comic on website like webtoon or tapasety) or an animated short. Good luck and I wish you well (sorry if there's anything grammer mistake) :D

I just dropped out of my college, I was a theatre arts major with a focus on directing. My dream is to make movies and I did theatre because a lot of the skills you learn overlap, plus I love theatre too. After a year I realised that, personally I was wasting time and money I could use to grow as a filmmaker. I definitely don't regret it, I've met some great actors I can use in future projects. But I was also miserable because I felt like I was stuck. Many classes and some assignments I did would never be applied in my future. There are also a lot of videos on UA-cam that taught me more about arts than a semester of college. So If I was you I'd look at all your options then decide, also there is no rush. Who knows, art school might be right for you.
Also side note. People who say you make your real friends at college couldn't be more wrong in my case. I'd take a bullet for my high school friends, can't say the same for the people I've met in college. But maybe my experience with that is rare. Best of luck.😁
Edit: forgot to mention that in my case, a degree is essentially useless when finding work. But that might just be for filmmakers.
I'm only in the first semester and I couldn't relate more. It's fun and everything but it's also a lot of work and you don't really have time to do the art you actually enjoy doing. It's funny because I live and study in Brazil and yet you described exactly what it feels like to be in art school. I cried when you talked about teachers hating anime, it's so true.
I dont know what to do, i joined art school , it was literally the most rushed decision of my life. three months in and i regret it . The workload is nuts , somedays i dont even get time to shower or have a decent meal wiht my family. The amount of assignments are overbearing anf time consuming .My friends have comparitively easier degrees and ngl it does affect me . Now i wpnder would i floourish more in a theory based degree or a practical based degree, I always loved english tbh.
I still dont know what i wanna do eventually. This is honestly one of the biggest regrets of my life till date. My advice to you is....
DONT RUSH INTO ANYTHING SIT BACK AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IN LIFE, PLEASE DONT JUMP INTO ANYTHING IMPULSIVELY .
hey man, that sounds.., REALLY unpleasant.
Maybe, really try to loook into another degree. If youre good with handcrafting or idk plants/people/animals try an intership there, hope that helps. ;)
like you said, dont rush anything and keep in mind, that you can also do any kind of school later. Its also okay to apply to some small jobs for some time to get your head free.
On top of all this, right now is a really stressful time so take care of yourself, mental health always comes first :D
If your gay maybe you can infiltrate both sides.

I'm going into an art major, and I'm lucky that I got a full tuition scholarship, and my parents are kind enough to pay my remainder. Seriously, I can't thank them enough, I'm terrified of student loans, and this college is avg 60k a year!
I am working towards being a prop master. It's something I'm passionate about, and it's something I actually have experience in. And this is part of the reason I got the scholarship in the first place. As the student who held the position of prop master in the theatre department graduated in the 2019 class. So the department went a full year with no student leader, and the director of the theatre department taking the role of prop master. Also, I'm the only incoming freshman with prop interest/experience. So I know that when I start in the fall, I'm gonna get YEETED straight to work!
Good job!
May the best of luck goes towards u and ur future
So I just thought I'd share my story since am thinking about art school and if its even possible.
I always felt that pressure in school to go into a good school and study a good major to get good money, all I ever felt was that pressure, but I never knew what I liked, or what was even possible, I thought about doing things I liked like game design as a high schooler, even took 3 years of design classes in HS teaching me a lot if basics like photoshop, But I didn't because I felt it didn't align with all that pressure, so after 4 years in psychology I am failing and won't be allowed back next year....but of once I feel like I know what I want to do.... living a life when am 45 in an animation studio, game, movie, even just corporate ad photoshoping, just being creative with my life and having that fun, its what I want....but I have 4 years of failed schooling, can I go even more indebt to go to art somewhere else? (I am in Canada so it is far cheaper but still a lot of money for someone). I am drawing, every day if even a little, I want to improve and I am improving, I am just unsure if I can carve a life out for myself. Well that's my little story, I just hope everything works out with some good honest work and creativity.
I wish you the best and I hope you get to do what you really liked 💕
God damn I cried a little bit you can do it I believe in you!👍
Hope you succeed !
How are you doing 3 years later?
My advice is to go to trade school, most schools around my area offer web design which requires learning to code which will be useful for game design plus you get paid too
I have a friend that is an architect student. I confirm. They nearly don't sleep. Savour summer. That's the only time they can sleep. If you think you lack sleep as you sleep for a good 5 hours, think about them. Plates and projects are all over them. Serve them right. 😂👌
My sister did graphic design... she practically died in college.
"Why is it always in the bathtub?"
(:O! This is my chance) Well you _see_ ... actually I really don't know. They do that here at SCAD too, and I'm always sitting in post-production thinking "You know, we could just.. not have this scene? And the film would be fine." But the directors will give you a murderous look, so that's usually how the production process goes that results in a bloody bathtub scene making it to the final export.
I'm in a film degree and my teacher said that a few years a go a girl's final project included wrapping herself in cellophane naked and hanging from a tree in the local woods. Like what? Why?

it’s fine to go to art school but listen u gotta know what is available to u in ur area. Fashion, Photography and 3D animation majors are not worth it if u live outside a big major city. Photography mayyyy help if u actually do go to events like weddings and photoshoots but really anybody can do it without a need to go to a college. As for fashion, u literally have to get lucky to be part of a big fashion company. 3D animation, u are gonna be worked to death at game studios or movies studios if u pursue it. The best possible majors that are worth it are Culinary arts, Music Production, and possibly Videography. The food industry is growing, anybody can be an artist now a days I guess, and very few ppl actually do videography than photography. It’s really about who u know and whether u have the money. Don’t let urself or ur parents be in such debt. It’s not worth killing urself over. NEVER DO LOANS!
I LOVE abstract art!
I can just put my feelings on the sheet, if I feel sad, I add in a sad face and most people notice it. It also usually has every colour of the rainbow because it’s cool af,
I got a A+ in art :D
I’ll never go to an art school. I had a dude in my class who was selling art, he like made a 100 dollars from art and he never went to a art school. He just drew, practice makes perfect!
Honestly when it comes to the money aspect that's why I chose to go to a community college for my AA before transferring to a University. It's a lot cheaper and you'll have an easier time getting into the university you want for your bachelor's program. Also word of advice apply for every scholarship you can find! It'll save you so much money in the long run and all it usually takes is writing an essay about why you need/want the scholarship.
Plus you can get all your general education out of the way so you don’t have to take a BIOLOGY COURSE (with 4 tests/chapters a week) alongside your 12+hour weekly art assignments.
oh hey daidus! i decided to go 2 ART SCHOOL becuz of U^^
THX U SO MUCH
xxxxx U w U !!
In 5th grade my art class was drawing anime. I guess i was Lucky (:
You lucky bastard.
I have to say my school was like the one exception to a lot of this. They gave out scholarships like candy every time you turned in new work when applying and your senior year you are given internships in the field for major things (i.e. movies, big artists, etc) so you can better get a job after you graduate because working in art is 1000% all about who you know. Idk, maybe I just got lucky in choosing lol.
But all the stereotypes about the majors was still 100% true. Some things never change lol.
Which school was it lol
I think you have just destroyed my dream of becoming an architect
