  • *I'm bracing myself to get shit for this video and that's fine. I'm just asking y'all to be respectful in the comments and use this platforms to share your experiences in a kind and genuine way. Thanks~*
This topic has been on my mind for literal YEARS and I had to get it out at some point. I wish I hadn't focused so much on the freelancing side of things cause you will be learning solo too. Plus the freelancer hustle is a struggle that all of us--degree or no degree--must face. But bottom line, when you're on your own, you have to make your own moves, period. When I was working full time at Starbucks, it took me months before I felt could push myself to work on art daily, and even then it's not as much as I regularly do at school. Shit's tough. That being said, everyone is different AND entitled to their own opinions so fire away in the comment section,
Here's some stuff to help you think further on the topic:
    1) • Video This is a hard pill to swallow but it really emphasizes how hard you need to work no matter what decision you make in order to make it as an artist
    2) • I Just Finished Art Sc... I just finished art school--now what?
    3) www.gcastellano.com/arttips/20... Argument FOR art school
    4) • Samantha Hahn: On Illu... The art of success
    5) • Good Life Project: Lis... Video of Lisa Congdon, an artist who built her career wayyy later in life
    6) • How to be a freelance ... How to be a freelance artist by Will Terrell
    9) • The best advice I coul... Best advice for illustrators
I hope this helps or at least gets you thinking deeper about the subject! You have more options than you think and it's okay to try a few in order to make the best decision. Don't sweat it, I'm always here to help. If you have really deep, questions that you /need/ to talk to me about, email me: bianabova@gmail.com

I'm in art school and it blows my mind people are skipping class yet they pay to be at this art school. Like my school says you miss 3 days and they drop you from the course and you have only 1 chance to get back

I'm so apathetic about school. Being an art major at university was a great experience, and I never truly took art seriously until I started taking art classes, but I can safely say that the majority of what I've learned about art is self taught thru my own hustle, as you put it. I agree that going to school really kicks you in the butt to work harder, but once you get into that drive school becomes an expensive alternative. You can take life drawing classes in most cities for $20 or less a session. There are tons of free art tutorial videos, advice, and paid online classes much cheaper than school; dropping money on an expensive cintiq is better than a fundamental art class at university imo. And there really is no time limit on learning. If it takes you 10 years to reach master level when you get out of high school that's no big deal. The only thing you'll have to sacrifice is your social life, I think most young people aren't willing to give that up...but as a person in her late 20's I think being financially secure is the most important factor looking back lol

    • @BianaBova

I totally hear you on the social pressure--not only do you not want to be distanced from your peers, but there's the overwhelming expectation that you /have/ to go to school after high school. And the cost of that "essential" education is so freaking much!!! Idk, there's no right answer to anything, but I 100% get where you're coming from

I kind of just found you pretty much yesterday but God you are so comforting.
My plan now is to go to a two year and then transfer to my four year. There's only one big Art school in my area but the tuition is enough for me to by a decent house and several dogs. I think this a good plan for me because even though I love art and want to have a career in it. I haven't had much experience with it(traditional art classes, I do have a 4 years of experience in graphic design tho) in highschool. I don't think that I'm ready/have enough skills to be completely on my own but I want to learn more. Hopefully I'll get my associates in art and then be able to transfer and study in animation and make cartoons for the rest of my life or whatever else life might have for me

I really enjoyed seeing your last video giving us facts on university and art schools. I have been doing a lot of research lately on art school. I never knew I’d come to think this way but I’m dreading going to college now since I can’t seem to pass my math classes. I was attending university and was on a lifeline since I couldn’t pass my math class. I finally passed it after one year of trying but I failed my other classes so I had to attend community college. The first thing I did in community college was all art classes that semester it was the best semester in college. I loved it, but then started to regret it because I talked with my counselor and he said I really need to figure out what I want to do with my life. I decided on photography transfer back to the same university. I made my semester plan for the next year and a half to transfer. I’ve been going to school for almost 3 years not close to finishing. I took this math class worth two classes in one semester I failed it. I started to get the mentality of what’s the point? I finally figured out what I want to do which is fashion, photography, jewelry, and graphic design. I know I want to do so much I want to at least take two classes in jewelry making I already have the experience in it. But overall I feel so lost. I work so hard to pass all my classes and I do pass them but I can never pass math. I’m glad I started seeing your videos it made me feel like there are others that go through this. I’m going to see a couple of art schools. I’ve never experienced looking at colleges in high school I didn’t get to do much in high school and always regretted that. Thank you for making videos like this. Hopefully everyone including myself find our path to what we really want in our lives.

In my opinion, it would be the best for artists to at least minor in buisness. Without any buisness background, it will be hard to sell yourself as an artist, to be able to make money as an artist. If you can afford secondary education, I feel you should get some kind of buisness education.

Any advice for someone out of high school who would love to pursue any of these options but doesn't have the talent yet? I'm trying to find art classes, taking community college art classes, I practice every day, devour classes on skillshare, and yet I know I lack the skills to create a portfolio even for a university's art major. I didn't have the opportunity to take art classes in high school so all I know is the doodling I've taught myself. I know if I could at least get into an art degree or art school I'd be taught what I need to know, but the thing is they won't even consider my portfolio at the level I'm at now... difficult situation D: anyone else in a similar spot/any advice pls help!!!

Practice 6 hours atleast every day, get the basics of anatomy, colour theory and accomplish basic mastery in any single medium.
Make sure to add in your previous, not so well made sketches to show that you have improved and are willing to work hard to be even better

Love this video! I go to a public university with a pretty nice art program, and that’s what I’ve decided to pursue. It’s the perfect balance in my mind, I’m not the most amazing artist (yet hopefully!) and because my university is not strictly an art school, the classes are smaller. And as you said, with the smaller number of students the professors are more able to help you work on things and give tips, etc. also the portfolio review is a little less scary than going against students at a strictly art focused school!

In my experience applying this year, most of the private art schools (where in state or out doesn't make a difference) have the funding to give me merit scholarships that make the cost equal to or close to my state uni (Wisconsin) which only gave me a small federal loan and said that when art merit scholarships come out, they likely won't be more than 2k for freshmen. I didn't apply to SVA, but I got accepted to SAIC, KCAI, and MIAD with scholarships and I'm waiting on a few more.

When I was younger, I have wanted to attend an art school, but my parents never had that kind of money. So I ended going to JC and took a few art classes there. One of my professors told me that that the curriculum being taught at community college was art school material & technique. At the same time, I decided to teach myself art as well so I began buying how to books on art and watched creative lesson videos on UA-cam. Plus, I have always been creative since childhood and have taped into it since. I am now convinced that I have always been an artist and that I really don't need to go to some expensive art school to realize that. I just fell in love with the idea and the fantasy of attending an art institution and if I actually did go to one it might not have been what I expected it to be from the get go anyway.

im really glad im from maryland and had an art school to go to near me; having extreme anxiety + living far away and out of reach from family would not have ended well for me and 99 percent of the students here live a plane ride away and i just wouldnt be able to do it. so i think another good thing to consider for people living in like the midwest or an area with no art schools is how far you're willing to travel to go to one.

I already graduated 2 art schools before so this one felt like I did not need to rush myself to get more higher degree and taken a cap year or 2 to only focus on work and upgrading my passion :( I wish I could turn back time and done it differently.

If you're dead set on animation, or at least art, and you know you could afford it then art school is a good choice. Not sure how many public universities offer it as a major (not a lot in my state), but something specific like that is definitely more art school related. That and the networking you'd get in arts school would be good for animation studios if you're looking to do steady commercial work right out of college, but the degree and portfolio are all that matters at the end of the day. However, I know its a pretty competitive field to get into in general, so do some research while you have the time, believe me you'll be glad you don't have to deal with the headache senior year on top of your other stuff.

Hi! I went to university and ended up with a degree in Industrial Design. I did a couple of internships related to Industrial Design and I didn't like it. At all. I decided to follow my life-long dream of being an illustrator and I'm currently in limbo: even if Design is not so far away from illustration and art, I still have a degree that I don't plan on using. I feel like the straight-to-freelance type you described but I did go to university and, therefore, I'm starting the whole process four years later. Do you have any additional advice?

    • @BianaBova
      @BianaBova  6 років тому +1

Oh dude, I'm so sorry that happened to you. You're 100% not alone in the struggle but it sucks regardless.
Here's the best advice I can give based on listening to what others have done: 1) go back to school if you're wealthy enough 2) failing that, work as an industrial designer for now to pay the bills but create an illustration portfolio in the meantime. Then, gradually, start hunting for illustration work and transition from pure design to pure illustration. I have no idea what your skill level is with drawing, but you're gonna have to do some serious work to get up to speed. Read every book at the library, watch every tutorial on youtube (I have tons!), obsessively study illustrators you admire, and DRAW LIKE HELL!!! You /can/ do it, others have done it, you just have to go go GO. And I think you'll have a serious advantage having a design background, like that education was not for nothing.
Anyway, I'm rambling and this is a very long comment. Lots and LOTS of luck to you!!

I think I need art school, cause I want to be in film. I don’t really have my own way of paying, yet. But I’m planning on going back to community college so I can get my GPA up to a 2.0 so I can get financial aid or scholarships. I’m planning on going in Georgia, but I could go anywhere as long as it’s cheap, I don’t really want to be away from my family. But I want to move to New York City after I’m done, or California. My mom said she’s not gonna pay this time when I go to college. So I need to pay for myself. I’m not 100% on what I want to do yet though, cause I want to do a little bit of this, a little bit of that. I mostly want to do film though.

I’m not sure if you’re going to find this in my comment through this cluttered comment section , but if you do . I want to express how much you’re helping me though some tough times. I just graduated my high school two months ago. June 10th to be exact and reality just slap the shit out of me. It was basically like... okay , now what ? I’ve been pressured to go to college as my father would say “ if you don’t go to college, you’ll never become successful. And would work at an entry level job. “ I’ve been looking at tons of UA-cam videos about art schools and is college right for everyone and many people has many opinions about this controversial topic. I don’t want to become so much in debt and I know debt is inevitable , but I want to take my life to a different approach. I love art , love writing books, also found a new passion for animation , but don’t really know how to go about it. Not sure if you could help me , but from your life experience you can possibly shed some light . Haven’t watched all of your videos yet , but I’m going to binge watch your videos so I could get enough tips/ information about how to start my new life’s journey. Sorry for this long ass comment 😒 I just needed to get something off my chest.

Sorry, I just want to correct one thing in regards to SVA (only because if I were still applying to colleges, this probably would have scared me out of applying there lol) but at SVA, the highest they give is $15,000 a year like you mentioned, but a lot of students do get the highest scholarship, not just one. I wasn't expecting to get much of anything from them, but both my friend and I received the highest scholarship, and a much more skilled student at my high school also going to SVA must have also gotten it if we did. If anyone was considering SVA, my advice is to apply even if you doubt you'll receive much, because it seems that many students do receive this $15,000 scholarship.

May I ask the amount you received is "Merit Scholarship" or not? If so, did you also get "Need-based Scholarship" from FAFSA as well? If so, do you mind telling how much you got each year?
