Havana’s Crumbling Houses and Hotels

  • Most visitors to Cuba tour lovely old Havana - carefully renovated for tourists. Take a look at the reality of what life is like for ordinary Cubans - from the sweltering bedrooms nicknamed “the Bar-B-Q” to the unspeakable dangers lurking in the basement.
    The Cuban government is finally taking some steps to try to alleviate Cuba’s severe housing shortage. For the first time in half a century, Cubans are allowed to buy and sell homes and construction materials are subsidized. This gives locals an incentive to renovate, but the problem is overwhelming and Havana continues to collapse (3 building a day, on average).
    A Cuban Joke: There are three successes to the Revolution, and three failures. The successes are healthcare, education, and social equality. The failure are breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And housing. Havana hasn't gotten a coat of paint in over fifty years and, outside of the tourist showcases, is falling apart. In this, the revolution has failed.

    While >90% of Cubans have their own homes, more Americans are spending half of their income on housing.

      So, The American street people have more than the average Cuban. Meanwhile, Cuban politicians are wealthy. Is this what you want for the people of America? You Fool, did you even watch the video? How many people do you think are trying to get into Cuba? The only people that want a Socialist government are those lazy people that don't want to earn their place in society. You are free to move there at any time. Enjoy the daily 5-hour bread lines.

      Americans live in their own homes with much higher standards, unlike Cubans living in stolen properties.

      Homelessness is worse in the west, plus the socialist policy of welfare is the only thing that's kept millions of people from losing their homes over the years when the free market job market failed to provide for them. Also something that these documentary's always conveniently forget to mention is that the reason Cuba has no money coming into the country is because of the US embargo that locked them out of the global economy. We can't put a poverty embargo on them then blame them when our trade war keeps them poor.

      LOL. The US embargo is nothing compared to the loss of Russian and Venezuelan aid Cuba received to keep Cuba's borderline non-existent economy afloat due to Castro's war on private enterprise and local industry.

      Excellent point. In several clips you don't even see their faces. This was done at their request to protect them - the narration is based on their own complaints and I didn't want the government to track them down (this series aired internationally). I ran the entire narration past a dozen Cubans- including those who were filmed - to make sure they were okay with it. In the rare cases that I do negative stories my first responsibility is to makes sure no one gets hurt.

      Dude, you're seeing how trash it looks, do you think they're so subnormal to say that it's lovely to live like that? No, they're intelligent, they know that their life is shit over there. I know several Cubans and I don't know a single one of them that's happy with their communist regime, EVERYONE hates it.

    • @OurHumanPlanet
      @OurHumanPlanet  Рік тому

      I always sit down and explain why I'm filming and where it will air before I start shooting. I then ask whether they want to be filmed (or interviewed). In this case they were okay with my filming but not with an interview. Many of them also didn't want to show their faces so we made sure their backs were turned to the camera. This has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with respect and courtesy to the generous people who allowed me and my camera into their lives.

    I don’t doubt that this story is full stop the truth, what I can tell you is the best way to help Cuba is go there, support the local businesses and stay in a privately owned AirBnd and take things like toothpaste and soap and give it to the locals. I recently visited Havana and yes, it has its flaws, but it’s a beautiful city and wonderful people with a near zero crime rate. Go there to support the Cuban people!!

    I love your videos and how you are exposing the real Cuba, but I am very disappointed in this video because you don't mention the Actual reason WHY everyone is soo poor in Cuba!! I truly don't understand why no one ever talk about the GIANT elephant in the room, the crippling US sanctions that have absolutely destroyed Cuba's economy since day one!!
    Why don't you also explain how is it possible for such a bankrupt government and one of the poorest in the world, to be able to offer Free healthcare and next to free medical care!! or free education on every levels!!! Or free food subsidy for every single cuban in the country! how about next to free public transit, just 0.01$ !!! How is all that possible when the government is basically dead broke and has been running on empty for 60+ years!!
    Just imagine how Cuba would be today had it been left alone and not crippled by the US sanctions!

    • @OurHumanPlanet
      @OurHumanPlanet  6 років тому +7

      I agree with you about the US sanctions. I didn't include them because my videos focus on the people of Cuba, not the politics. You can read about that almost anywhere (and most people do) - what you don't often see is how the Cubans themselves are coping day to day. And, as it turns out, I've posted videos on their healthcare system and public transit, and will be posting others on their food distribution and education. They are also about the people, not the pro/con politics of Castro's government.

    • @RobertoLopezstudyis
      @RobertoLopezstudyis 4 роки тому +7

      It is the communist regime fault for not helping the Cuban people and giving the food and good hospitals to tourists! It is not the US's fault or the embargo! The Castro regime put their embargo against the cuban people 61 years ago. The regime hates it own people! That is the truth!

      @@OurHumanPlanet in such a divisive subject, everything is political. the fact that you don't mention the sanctions, and just say "he made everyone equally poor" and "in this, the revolution has failed" is political, meaning it serves one narrative more than the other. Those are right-wing talking points, they're not neutral.

      This is part of a two-hour PBS documentary series on Cuba. It includes stories on Cuban literacy, healthcare, social equality, etc. (all very positive) and housing, distribution, etc. (all failures). I agree with you that - taken out of context - the individual stories will be interpreted as political but they are first and foremost honest assessments of the success/failure of individual aspects of Cuba.
