    The engine stumble or stutter can also be from the CAI. Filter oil almost has to be perfect on these. The location he has it as well, still allows hot air to come into the intake.

    So im trying to the head gasket while the engine is still inside the engine bay. I dont have access to air tools or a engine stand or a hoist to take the motor out. How hard is it to get the timing cover off? I am not looking forward to this at all.

    • @manuelbou
      @manuelbou  3 роки тому +1

      Performing this job without pulling the engine out is going to be even harder. It's not designed to be worked on from inside the engine and you'll regret having to try and piece it all apart from there. My recommendation is that if you cannot pull the engine out, you just don't tackle the job. If it was a Honda engine you can get away with it easily. Not this one

    • @TJsVette

      @@manuelbou I'm half way done pulling everything apart now, tomorrow is taking off the intake and then attacking the timing. I'm not in any kind of rush and taking plenty of pictures so I know where everything goes. Maybe I should look into a hoist and stand. I've never done a head gasket before so I figured why not give it a go lol. Now I'm starting to wonder if I should pack it all back up and take it to a shop.

    • @manuelbou
      @manuelbou  3 роки тому +1

      @@TJsVette keep going, youll get it done. The only issue is that you won't be able to resurface the block. If you only resurface the head and replace the head gasket you're doing a 50% head gasket repair at best. If the block is also warped, you did all that work for nothing.

    • @TJsVette
      @TJsVette 3 роки тому

      So update, I have decided to take the motor out but can it be done without taking the transmission with it? I can get to all the bolts on the transmission to take it off while it's still on the car but if it has to come out with it then I won't take those off till I get it out.

    • @manuelbou
      @manuelbou  3 роки тому

      @@TJsVette dealers choice. Id remove the whole thing as one piece but if someone where to replace a clutch then the trans comes off independently so the only problem i can see you having if taking it apart in the bay is clearance issues to wiggle the engine out and away the converter or clutch assy to lift the engine up. You have to give it about 6 to 8 inches of clearance but you should assess that prior

    Yeah, my 2005 Scion TC Special Edition had a VERY same issue. Turns out Toyota has a bulletin stating they know the cause of the excessive oil consumption, and its due to bad rings. They have no idea which engines specifically received the bad rings, so if you see this issue, you are to bring the car in so they can diagnose it and test it. My engine died because it starved cylinders 1 and 2 of oil. Even though I had the extended warranty and was at 96K miles, Toyota did not cover it. I am never getting another Scion or Toyota again because of this. It was very disappointing to see how useless Toyota and my local dealers were. They knew about the issues, but chose to screw me anyway.

    • @Stephenthegreat20
      @Stephenthegreat20 5 років тому +1

      usually extended warranty's are from another company, not the oem. at least in my experience from 5 years at ford, and 2 years at honda. the oem wants to do as little to have to be responsible as possible. i had a 2009 scion tc and had the oil consumption problem. i bought it new and 4 to 7 months in i got a oil light (it wasnt my daily) took it to the dealer, they knew about the oil problem, changed my oil and filter and placed multiple marks on the plug, pan, and filter and again oil light , now on 2 times with a new car they were really trying to make sure i wasnt trying to lemon law them, so they threw a shit load of parts at my car and it never had the problem again.

      Like most things, disassembly is the easy part. Just about any type of engine out there can be fully taken apart in a few hours. The skills come out when it's time to put it together.

    Question when you said the customer had a knock was it a low rhythmic one only at idle after warm up? I'm having this issue but it goes away as the rpm increases, maybe an intake manifold leak?

    • @Dabber234
      @Dabber234 5 років тому

      Also how much should I pay for a rebuild like this without getting ripped off, I'd probably do the teardown myself but I'm just very limited as to what I have to work with

    • @manuelbou
      @manuelbou  5 років тому

      If the knock is faint during idle but goes away when you accelerate, it most likely means the rod bearings are done for but when you accelerate it also increases oil pressure so that helps give it extra lube so you wont hear it then. Basically your issue is in the beginning stages.

      @manuelbou  6 років тому +1

      Cowboys Cards 81 the car was being worked on a single drive way, once I took the assembly out I needed to roll the car out of the way. Had I dropped the subframe I'd probably render the car stationary for the entire rebuild, not good for my situation.

    • @CowboysCards81
      @CowboysCards81 6 років тому

      importworx I have found it very easy to move it but you have to have to Jack's. Any way I can just put subframe back on 6-7 bolts. Wire harness is also way easy to take out from under glove.

    Does the engine need to be in a timed alignment before removal ?

    • @manuelbou
      @manuelbou  3 роки тому

      It is common practice to align the timing marks before removing so you can see what right looks like before you take it apart. Secondly, there's a small chance that during removal the valves move and make contact with the pistons which is not good. I prefer to rotate the crankshaft to ensure all pistons are at the mid stroke, that way there's no chance for parts to come into contact during removal.

    • @Pistonstrokes
      @Pistonstrokes 6 років тому +1

      Jermaul West yes! You just have to remove the windshield wiper tray and assembly and then you can wiggle it out up top. I just worked my way around it to keep the engine as complete as possible during removal.

    Wonder if is possible to remove the engine with out the transmission

    • @manuelbou
      @manuelbou  4 роки тому +1

      Very much possible. However you're going to find it harder to do that way. Its actually less work removing it as a combo and then separating it outside the car than it is to separate it in the engine bay.

    Hi, i have a question?
    When you replaced the bearings before rebuilding the engine how did you do it. I have an 07 tc with a knock when i give it gas. Can it be done with out taking the engine out.

    • @manuelbou
      @manuelbou  5 років тому

      You have to remove power steering pump, alternator, water pump, oil pan, structural pan that's on top of the oil pan, timing chain and tensioner. It's a good amount if work but I was done in 3, 6 hour days.

      How is that so? The head and block needed to be taken apart bare for machine work so if I did tear town during removal or after removal of the engine it wouldn't matter since the entire assembly needed to be taken apart. So what did I take apart that I didn't need to?
