    The iodine thing bugs me. It's rarely, if ever, on any nutrition labels and the USDA don't seem to care about it, either. Very weird. It's as if they want us to be deficient. I had blood tests a few years ago and my iodine was a bit low (mildly deficient) so I just upped my intake of spuds, cranberries, strawberries, kale and occasionally nori. I'll get my blood tested again, soon, but I'm sure my levels are fine, now. I started having two snack sized sheets of nori a day as that was supposedly the rough equivalent of 150μg but I started getting an irregular heartbeat which stopped happening after I stopped eating the nori. I just have one sheet every 3 or 4 days, now, and my heartbeat's fine. :)

    I was diagnosed with hypothyroid in Feb this year, been vegan 2 yrs. I wanna get off the synthroid for good so I’ll get started with nori sheets I guess :)

      Buy Irish seamoss and bladderwrack a lot more powerful! My levels have gotten so much better during only a month of consuming

      @@ptx-functionaltraining8733 Multivitamin that has 150mcg of Iodine costs less than 10€ for 90 days so can't be too expensive in the US either. Why waste time fiddling with some exotic plant sources when you can know for sure that you get enough Iodine and many other important vitamins in 2 seconds by taking a pill?

      @@cyberfunk3793 do some research on this „exotic“ plant, it has all vitamins and minerals the body needs even selenium, vitamin b12 and D, I tried these extracted compounds you mentioned for some strange reason they didn’t work properly on me, I mean I know the reason, my body needs Whole Foods to extract needed minerals on its own and not isolated compounds like you mentioned.

      @@ptx-functionaltraining8733 I have that Iodine, selenium, Zinc, Iron, Calcium, Vitamins A,D,E,C and all the B coming from that 1 pill. They cost me something like 7 euros for 2.5 month supply and I could buy them from the nearest supermarket unlike seaweed that isn't sold in any of the shops here(hence exotic). I'm not going to travel 20km looking for some seaweed nobody sells because of a simple vitamin or mineral everyone can get from a pill.

    Two sheets of nori--OK, but Dr, Greger forgot to mention what size sheets he has in mind. I buy Sushi Nori sheets by Eden Foods (from Whole Foods), They measure around 7-1/2" by 8". I'm pretty sure he doesn't mean we should eat 2 of these. What portions of these sheets is he talking about--what are the dimensions of the "2 sheets" we shoud eat? Anybody know?

    I discovered a supplement by now called Thyroid Energy that contains plenty of Iodine as well as vitamin B12 and other stuff for thyroid health. Going whole food plant based and adding that got me off Liothyronine and improved my numbers even without that.

      I ,did the same stop taking Levo generic bcuz of fillers
      I take
      NOW THYROID SUPPORT so, far so , good
      my left side gland removed only. I 'd like 2 ko my right one

    Do you have any advice for those who suffer with severe iodine allergy & still have thyroiditis? Currently untreated..Don’t know where to start! Thank you.

    jus wondering if I start taking nori/seaweed etc should I continue with the synthroid pill and when to stop and go for tests?

      I had hypothyroid for over 10 years, and was taking Amor Thyroid, then Lyvothroxine. I started my vegan journey in June of 2019, and started adding 2 teaspoons of seamoss for added minerals, to my morning tea about 7- 8 months in. I went for my 6 month blood work within 3 months after starting the seamoss, and was REMOVED from my Thyroid meds. I was shocked because I was told it was a lifelong med. I say this to say, nothing beats a failure but a try. Just make sure you get your labs done while trying and continue with the meds.

    Im alergic to seafood, fishoil, seaweeds... I have hashimoto's.... what about cranberries??? 1/2 cup has 400mcg iodine... I eat 10 dried cranberries everyday...

    I wish there was a video on people who had that radioactive iodine therapy to remove their thyroid and are successfully living without medicine. I have two loved ones who had that "Barbaric" procedure decades ago and are not able to live a good quality of life without meds. They both have tried ... Yet, my aunt who is in her 90s, had them surgically removed and has never been on meds!

      Doesn't sound like possible as the thyroid is the only source of thyroid hormone and if she isn't taking it, she isn't getting that hormone from air either.

      It's not possible to live without thyroid hormone, it's the master regulator. It's far more likely that your aunt is not being frank with you, or she calls it " thyroid replacement hormone" or HRT rather than "medication" (and she would be correct) or some thyroid tissue was left behind. 🌱

      nvm "As a control we studied in a normal man the bioavailability of pure mineral iodine such as potassium iodide which was excellent i.e. 96.4% and of pure organic iodine such as monoiodotyrosine which was a little lower i.e. 80.0%"

    The Japanese people consume 5mg-13.8mg of iodine a day! Compare to our RDA of 150 mcg (absolute minimum to prevent goiter and cretinism), the iodine deficiency in US skyrocketed in the last decades due to intentional salt limitations, plus substituting iodine in bread for bromine (which is banned in bread in Europe and Canada), no wonder the increase in breast cancer is through the roof… and breasts is the largest storage of iodine, plus the thyroid.
    So much research was done on iodine deficiency and treating breast cancers with iodine, yet Dr. Greger is not aware. Look at dr Brownstein research, or dr Abraham.

      No. It depends on your thyroid function. Never ever stop taking your meds without telling your doctor what you are planning. It's always worth a try, though (if you still have your thyroid).

    Dr. Greger is anti-potato. That's why he won't tell you that one medium potato with peel supplies 40% of your RDA of iodine.

      All the pesticides are in the peel and organic isn't available in many places or isn't affordable.

      I think it prolly varies from one tater to the next, dependant on what's in the soil in which it's grown? Or is iodine added to potato fields, as a condition for their healthy growth and yield? Love potato in Winter, ready in 5 minutes in the microwave, a hot and delicious snack. Just watch out for green skins! 🌱

      @@allencrider Well you are in the United States where for example toxic Paraquat is still allowed in your fields when EU and even places like Russia and China have banned it 😂 It causes serious neurological diseases like Parkinson's, so it's not joke trying to avoid it any way possible.

    Why bother trying to find some exotic seeweeds and then risk the chance of overdosing on them, when you can take 1 multivitamin pill in 1 seconds and get the 150mcg recommended? Why make it more complicated than it has to be, no point in always trying to find some plant source for everything when a simple multivitamin covers and costs less than 10€ for something like 3 months.

      Thank you! Some/people are against or even paranoid against taking supplements when it seems like a very efficient way to get rare or under-dosed vitamin/minerals into your diet. I never understood the "I eat everything I need" philosophy. Mealtime Myopia.

      his argument against supplements is that 1. the industry is completely unregulated and the vast majority supplements tested do not contain accurate doses of the compounds advertised on the bottle, either too little or too much, as well as having a significant risk of unsafe additives and fillers. 2. many vitamins and nutrients are far better absorbed from food sources than supplements for a variety of reasons.

      @@HufflepuffDaddy Yep, and it's very hard to get enough of some things like D3 through food and also kind of difficult to get enough EPA/DHA through food also without supplements. And some people also need to save money can't buy Salmon every day, so I think in many cases a good supplement can be a good option.

      @@TheBoxOfRocksFTW so, using kelp and seaweed for example, the Food Gods have ordained we shall only eat plant-based sources to get iodine? How do you know farmers and fishermen are regulated with their products to ensure, say Omega-3 content and low mercury content, are what is shown on the labels? Another example, the Olive Oil industry is just one example of something from Nature and adulterated by Man....but how else would we get Olive Oil? Grow Olive trees in our ubiquitous backyards and squeeze it ourselves?
