I took the cheese wagon to school from 1st to 11th grade. I lived far from town and was always the 1st or 2nd stop. Would talk to the bus drivers every day. Help out finding stops when we had a temp driver. In the morning, if the driver got ahead of time on our route, they'd pull into a gas station and we'd all have 3 minutes to buy candy and go to the bathroom. In the afternoon the driver would take a vote when we left school. Ah the 90s. We only had one car pass us illegally. I was in 7th grade, and it was a minivan. Tag UGH-69Z. I gave it to the bus driver but never knew if they got in trouble. Thanks again for what you do. This brought me back.

You guys don't get paid enough for the responsibility or the drama you have to deal with. Thank you for sharing sir. Be safe out there. Complacency kills.

I have been told some newer drivers (or those taking a spare) have put gasoline in a diesel bus and destroyed the engine 😱, so I think they’re trying to engrave it on people’s brains to use the word “fuel”. 🙂

Great video - driving a school bus myself after a career in semiconductor equipment maintenance, glad I left that industry, nice to see the real world outside of the confines of a wafer fab. Love my kids - they can put my blood pressure up but the job satisfaction is great - you won't be a millionaire on the wages but you leave a lasting legacy, taking kids safely to their education and back. My kids have also taught me a lot, especially about modern music and trends! Also, I find that my faith in God is important - there is no way I would have considered doing this job otherwise. My greatest wish when I eventually retire is that someday I would come across one of my kids, now grown up and doing OK in life, and having a chat with them about old times on my bus! One thing that never fails is respect for the kids as individuals and building a relationship with them, rather than being a hard disciplinarian. I don't mind a certain amount of noise - kids are kids after all, but I won't tolerate nastiness or bad language.

When I started driving a garbage truck back in the day, even that felt like an adjustment driving a much larger vehicle. I can imagine driving a school bus (which is almost triple the length of most cars I think) would take some getting used to even with years of being a good non CDL driver.

I drive in Mesa. The worst for me is the garbage on the floor. The schools will hand out food to the kids so they can throw it on the floor. The best way to get the cars to stop is to just pull over and put the hazards on lol. They always stop for that. Put the sign out and it is no way. Not stopping. 9 days left of this school year.

Love the Superman Keychain Pop on the dash. For being told you can't say Gas but instead Fuel you said Gas 2 times outside of saying you can't say it. LOL
Glad the job is working out for you.
I'm guessing the bus runs Range G tires. Those things are hard as a rock even when way underinflated. You rarely ever get anything to penetrate those tires as long as the tire has a good amount of pressure.
I am surprised that the bus doesn't have a central tire air pressure monitoring system on it though. A lot of RVs have them now along with Semi Trucks/Trailers.

I get more people that stop for the hazards, but will pass the stop sign like it's nothing.
I have quite a few neighborhistops where the kifs have to cross yhe street. Cars will still try to turn in front of the bus and honk at the kids as if they're in the wrong.
Neat how you all have that Zonat Scanner.

That's a lot of work you have to do. Here in the Netherlands we drive small electric vans with a maximum of 8 people. We have the vans at home. Everything can be read via the dashboard, just like in a modern passenger car. Tire pressure, broken lights, etc. Electrical, so no need for oil pressure or coolant control. At half past seven in the morning I log in to the on-board computer with a chip card, and then my school route appears on the screen, including cancellations or other details. Many drivers drive older people to daycare after their school route. Then I charge the car between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. (I have 10 public charging stations within a 1000-foot radius), and then drive back again. Check the bus for leftover items and log out. That's it.

I’m in the process of reading and learning the CMV driver guide and I’ve applied to be a substitute school bus driver. I’m nervous about the actual driving test but mostly the knowledge of all the inspection points and items to memorize to pass the test. I’ve heard you hav to get all 100 items correct in order to pass. Also I’m a bit nervous about driving in snowy conditions. I just retired from my job of 36 yrs but I needed something to supplement my retirement income with things being so expensive now. Can you give me any advice about the pointing and naming of all the different functions and parts of the bus please ?

I struggled with the pre trip inspection/naming all the parts. I spent alot of time practicing and reading all the parts over and over until my brain was fried, I was very un confident about if I could remember it all, but to my surprise I was able to. In the end I think I freaked myself out so much that I became super un confident, But I did know it all. Once you go thru the test it becomes 2nd nature. Funny thing is on the daily job, you really don't have to go thru all the parts, just a visual inspection to know it's all still together and working is sufficient enough lol. Good luck and let me know how it goes or went! ❤

Most of AZ gets snow. Phoenix is where it's hottest (and a few smaller cities). Winter months the lows are in the low 30s. Outskirts of the city get colder than that. Clearly there are places that get way colder but it still gets cold here. Especially if you have zero insulation lol

You work contracts hours. For an example, morning runs are contacted 3 hrs. Afternoon route is 3 hrs again. Mid afternoon is 1 hrs, late run is 1 hour. Total for the day is 8 hrs. Obviously if you go over for some reason, you have a way to record that so you can get paid additional
