I am in the process of trying to be a School Bus Driver. The phone interview went well, so now I am just waiting to see if i get accepted. But in the meantime, I like to research the position that I apply for, so I kind of know what I am walking into. Your video was great info for me so far out of the few videos I have watched. I'm a UPS driver and we are always told not to back up unless we absolutely have to and also to do whatever we can to avoid backing when possible. Can't imagine how difficult it is to back up a school bus. UPS trucks are hard enough to back up as is...
Zachary Bornhoft that’s the same for school bus drivers. We only back up if absolutely necessary and we have to call it in to get the ok before we do it. Only other time we back up is to park the bus in the yard. It’s not hard at all. I can parallel park that thing better than my car lol
@@malikaannette5382 Really? You have to ask for permission to back? Guess I'm not all that surprised. All they do at UPS is each delivery route has an average number of backs on a typical day (my route averages 19) and if you go like 5 or more over the average then expect a supervisor to have a word with you about that. I think like 1 in every 3 crashes at UPS is are drivers backing into stuff
Zachary Bornhoft the ups truck is wider than a school bus.. school buses are longer but skinner so not that difficult backing up
Almost ready to take my CDL. I hope to pass with a very good score. I can't wait to start doing this job. I think it's a great job to have, making sure the kids get to school safe and sound. After all, they.......the kids.......are the future. Thank you for this great vid.

I drive the bus better than my car lol I can parallel park it with no problem too lol. You will get better as time goes by. I been driving since 2010

This was interesting to watch, I’m a school bus driver in Canada and we do a lot of things similarly and we also use the zonar too! Do you guys not have to pop the hood and check the engine, oil, coolant etc. ? Or check underneath the bus for anything broken or leaking? Anyways love from Canada!🧡
Pimsy Potpie we do have to check for leaks but it was dark and our buses are close together but we don’t go under the hood
How hard was it to get your CDL to drive the busses?
We are always expected to do a full pre trip before starting the bad boy up. That pre trip is part of testing to get your Class A and B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
She didn't show it, but we usually do it.

I have many morning moments some were funny some were scary one morning I was going to my bus it was dark all the other drivers has already done their pre- trip and gone I was walking to my bus and I thought I seen a person walking up from behind me I panicked jumped turned around and it's the shadow of an tree branch on the pavement so relieved that it was just a shadow once I did my pre-trip inspection I kinda calmed down and laughed at myself.

Interesting video it came up on my feed I recently was watching a lot of videos because I was studying for my final Road skills test I passed. I just obtained my CDL at the DMV test over 1 week ago. Then last week spent the week training, driving the bus with kids on it and someone observing me. last night I had the strangest dream about bus driving .first, I was driving the bus and the steering was off I could not get the bus to steer correctly. then my dream switched and I picked up three boys from the high school but as my dream switched again I had four boys on the bus one was driving the bus and I was sitting in the seat behind him watching and I was asking him, why he was driving the bus? then my dream switched again I was inside a school and I was walking around looking for something... trying to tell people that I could not find the bus. the dream switched again, I had parked the bus and got out and forgot to secure the bus and I'm sitting there talking to a man telling him how I've got to go back to the bus bc I did not put the parking brake release on. This week I will either start subbing or driving someone's else's route on my own .strange dream, all my worst fears.

What time are you usually done for the day? I need a career change
ladyash89 my times are 6:30am-8:30am then I go back at 1:15pm-5pm but that’s my time. A lot of people go between 6:30/7am until 8:30/9:45am and 1:30/2pm until 4:30/5:30pm and if you do after school program that can go between 6:30/8pm. I love it! And the break in between is so convenient

I’m 47 years old and about to start the fourth year for my school district.
Wages vary wildly by state and even region. Some districts have their own fleets. Some districts contract with a company that employs the drivers. And some districts use independent contractors; people who buy their own bus or busses and operate them as a business.
It’s a very rewarding job and obviously weekends and summers off are huge benefits.

No it doesn’t. You have to inspect the bus yourself and then put it in as a defect

iMatti00 it’s the student check. It’s to make sure you check the bus to make sure you have no kids on the bus. If it’s not pushed the bus alarm will go off. I’m going to do another video showing how it all works

I used to drive a school bus the last five years LOL my first winner was something else I left stop driving a school bus to kids was just too bad.
Awe sorry it didn’t work out 😢 I absolutely love driving the bus. It definitely has its days but for the most part it’s all good.

I use to work at First Student about 9 year at the Canton, MS location. Durham came in and took over. I gave them a few month and found another job. It was the vest and zonar that gave it away.

Yes they do and it’s so unfortunate. I’ve had my fair share of unruly kids but I do transport the alternative kids so I try to stay on my p’s and q’s

Also you think - 1 degrees celcius is "so cold" lol, that pretty much warm. Try colder then - 35 degrees celcius sometimes close to - 50 celcius with the wind chill here in Alberta in winter aha.

You are absolutely right! I was in a rush and I live 3 minutes away from the job which is no excuse cause anything can happen in that time. Yes I do wear my seatbelt on the bus. Lol it’s cool I appreciate all comments. Thank you 😊
No pre-trip at all. Just hit the zonar stations without checking anything. Fanned the brakes way too fast, no time for the auto-slacks to cycle and take up any slack. Fanned the brakes with the engine off so she could not check the governor cut-in and the air recovery time. Did not tug test the parking brake and did not check the spring-brake's ability to stop the bus when in motion.Did not open the hood to check oil, belts, fluids etc. Did not fully open every emergency exit to check for free travel and alarm function. And, last but not least, did not check (hammer) the duals to ensure none were flat. But, hey, they're only kids and it's cold-ish out so as long as the zonar is happy.........
She was through enough for a bus that she drives every day.

Ya, they're only kids, why do it right? You don't know she drives that bus every day. Buses get changed, spared out, defects, maintenance etc. Treat every trip as new. Never assume anything. Never trust anything.
Thank you for your feedback Harold. It was 5:30am and 15 degrees outside. I’m not sure how you was taught to do a break test but that was the way I was taught. And if you watched closely I was letting out the break pressure which you have to do with the bus off but on ACC and all the warning signs are on the the bus is started. Also I sped up the video so it wouldn’t be as long. We do not check under the hood which 9yrs ago was not part of our training. You got me on the emergency doors 👍🏾. Keep in mind different states do different things. Again thank you for your comment I appreciate it
