I’m so happy to see someone who’s my age! I’m also 27 years old and I start my bus driving classes this month. I never thought that I would ever want to be a bus driver. Being that I’m a college student and have 5 kids I need something to work around our schedules. Bus driving is literally the only logical job for me and also like you said stability.
Aww this comment made my day!! I hope class goes really well for you! ^_^ It's a really good job for parents who are always with their kids just take some getting used to!:)
How are classes going?:)
@@MysticHealer27 Class start in a couple of weeks.
That’s why I took the job. Years ago. So I could raise my kids. And went back years later because I went back to college. Still under the poverty wage for a job you have to have multiple license for.
Even with the extra trips I work full time. But we’re union and get benefits and retirement. No school no pay other than holidays and no pay through summer
I'm in NY and get paid weekly. Blessed to make $27 an hour and will get $1,000 bonus. This is my 3rd week. I have seen hourly wages as high $31 an hour in NY.
That's awesome!^_^ How are you liking it so far?
Did you already have dl license ? How did you obtain training to pass test? I just got class a permit this week. And need to start training
The long school bus? I’m starting rn with the short bus
Wow nice! I’m in Alabama and I don’t wanna talk about what we make😂😂😂
Thank you for sharing. That's so cool you get to bring your kids along. I hope you and your family have been well.
Thank you for watching! It really is cool! ^_^ Yes we have been well, lots of changes this past year but we'll be talking about them all soon! I hope you've both been doing well too! :)
@MysticHealer27 your welcome. Glad to hear that. Ok I'll be on the lookout for more videos. Thank you, we have been well. Taking it 1 day at a time 💪🙂
@@baringitallwithcandice I'm happy to hear that! ^_^ Taking it one day at a time is all we can do!👍🏾 Thank you, I'm hoping to be posting more consistently this year.
I'm a homeschool mom looking into doing this too. Thanks so much for this video!
Me too! I think it's a great job for us^_^. You've got this!:)
I'm excited for the vlogs and I will be ordering hair growth serums for sure. Need that 😆
Thank you! ^_^ And thanks so much for sharing this video on your story! You made my morning! 💖
Thanks for this, I have an interview coming up. I’m sick of my 9-5 phone job and looking to try something different. Hopefully this works out 😃
That's awesome! I definitely love the job so I hope it's the change of pace you're looking for as well ^_^. Good luck on the interview!!:)
So what happened?
@@backtoasimplelife I didn't end up going with it, the company seemed very shady and the pay was lower than I thought. I'll be working as a city carrier with the post office for now.
Good stuff! I used to drive school buses before going to transit.
Thank you! :) Do you like transit as well? There was someone who commented asking whether school bus driving or transit was the better pick. What would you say?
@@MysticHealer27 I like it. It depends on what a person is looking for. Transit is normally full time with benefits and pays well depending on where you live. School bus driving gives you more flexibility and freedom.
Gotcha, that makes sense! Thank you! 😊 I'm glad you like your job too ^_^.
@@MysticHealer27 Pittsburgh transit bus drivers make over 100K a year.
Hey girl I just happened to stumble on your page❤ I completely support you. See you soon. Love and Blessings to the family.
Hello, thank you so much for watching and for all your support!❤Love and blessings to you and your family as well!
Awesome video. I'm really contemplating driving school busses because I've been working in an office environment for over 15 years and looking to go into a different career path. Will be taking a pay cut but it's all about loving what you do and enjoy going to work everyday. I have side jobs for extra income so hopefully it works out.
Thank you! It's definitely a big change from an office job. I was a graphic design and layout manager before my kids ^_^ I still do stuff on the side for that as well as other things. It's definitely a pay cut but I really like it and I have a lot more time to spend with my family. ^_^ I hope it works well for you too :)
Same here!!
I'm in the exact same situation, I can't do another 15 years in the office and this looks great. Especially if I get in with the district and qualify for a pension. There's a couple opportunities like that in my area and I'm close to taking the leap
You're lucky your district allowed you to take your kids. Mine wouldn't, I'm guessing many are like that. My district (Louisville KY) actually pays quite well (as bus driver's go). I'm at 9 years now, planning to retire Oct. 1st, since I turn 65 in September. The 4:30 am alarm is killing me. Nice video!
For sure, I definitely wouldn't have taken the job if I couldn't bring my kids. It's one of the biggest incentives here. 9 years is awesome! Congratulations on retirement!! 👏 ^_^.
Love ur video, keep smiling.
Thank you! 😊 I will! ^_^
I just got my Cdl on Tuesday. I’ll be driving school buses myself.
That's awesome!!! Congratulations!:) looking forward to updates on how you like it!:)
How Did your hiring process go ?
Me to I have my interview on Tuesday I’m a single mother so I thought it would be great
I start my classes next week. 😊
That's awesome Michelle! You've got this!:)
I’ll keep my day job!
I drove a school bus for 7 yrs. The pay will get you by but the retirement plan is the pits. Im in Ga so maybe its different elsewhere. You have to be vested with the district for 10yrs before you can get on with their retirement program. About every decade counts as $150 a month once retired. We had bus drivers who did 30 and 40yrs but could only top off at $450 a month max. Inflation, food, meds and other expenses come into play. If you retired from the military or some other job then you shoyld be ok but not on school retirement alone. Also ask about the use of sick days. Find out how much you get paid for unused sick days or how they buy them back once retired.
Well I was a charter over-the-road driver for 20 years then the pandemic hit and that was that. Let me say you got a great smile, keep on busing. God bless.
Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you landed on your feet! Thank you, I will! God bless you as well!
Hello, would you suggest being a over the road chatter bus driver or a over the road/dedicated/regional truck driver? Which pays better? I enjoy driving...I'm leaning towards truck driving for higher pay and because I would only have to worry about myself ..
School bus drivers are in need in my area. My friend just became one and loves it! I am afraid to do it
I'm glad your friend loves it! I didn't think I would like it as much as I do. Let me know if you decide to give it a try! ^_^
I have orientation tomorrow so I’m on your channel getting info lol I got my cdl 9/2021 so I’m used to driving big vehicles
I hope you're having / will have a good orientation! I'm sure you'll do great! :) Thanks for watching! ^_^
How’s it going??
It’s going well I’m currently in training after getting my p & s endorsements added & after training I will be able to go test out in a bus to be fully licensed
@@charitygrove233 You've got this! ^_^
@@MysticHealer27 thank u!
i heard when everything started to reopen, they had to pay more because they lost so many drivers, back in 04 when i started they were starting out between $9-12/hr, and when many drivers started dealing with those kids as well as some difficult parents, that wasn't worth it, so i'm happy to see they appreciate new drivers more.
Yup, they definitely upped the pay! When I started in 2021 the pay was $18.16 I believe. This year it's going up to $22. $9-$12/hr is a hard sell for a job like this one. Are you still driving?
@@MysticHealer27 yeah i still do, at this point the only reason is because all the free time in between and, in the summer otherwise, i would've been gone after my first year.
I agree! The free time is great and I can take my kids with me too so that works! Hopefully you are getting paid a lot more now!
@@MysticHealer27 yeah as time went on, i got a little more, and when school reopened i got a whole lot more, because so many didn't return from the shutdown, and i became much more valuable.
That's awesome! ^_^
I get paid weekly. We're working all around a year, also summer time in the camps. We don't get paid for the snow days or for the summer when we are at home.
Weekly sounds like it would be good! How do you like bus driving?
Milwaukee, Wisconsin here! A local school bus company will start me at $28/hr and will train me as well.
That's awesome! I hope training goes well!^_^
My group it's 27 degrees outside and mind get on the bus with out jackets, even seen one boy walking to school only in a tee shirt and shorts.
Wow, I just don't know how they do it!
I'm 27 female, and got my class b cdl to drive school buses at 26 in TX. I moved back up north temporarily and am now starting a new job wit STA student transport of America for better pay and flexibility. I can also take my 15month old with me as well. I like to drive so this job sits well with me. You just have to hustle the hours until your pay can be full time even though it's a part time job. Every district is different on how they run their buses.
That's awesome! I'm 27 as well^_^. Yup every district is different! I hope everything continues to go well for you!:)
@@MysticHealer27 you too hun, thank you!

as a single 21 year old this might be the perfect job to get me threw flight school I got my Class B , P , S was looking for jobs but alot of them are full time im seeing bus driving is part time that means I can go to school for my aviation degree while I work , and I don't have a family to worry about so the money goes a longer way cool:)

How long is training?
@@stinab2007 I live in GA they told us 6 to 8 weeks long .
@@The_Aries_Princesswhat county you’re in? I’m in Gwinnett and I’m thinking about doing it. How you like/don’t like it so far?
@@KingLeeThe2nd I’m in Gwinnett county as well . Currently work for the school system . Will say if your going to training over here make sure you get a person with some patience. I train at the lawrenceville location it was okay . I did get my cdl , now I’m about to upgrade to class A .
I started driving school buses at 21 years old, I’m now 27, and worked at 3 different companies in that time, and yes one thing I recommend if your gonna drive school buses at a young age is your gonna need multiple incomes, now I do it as a sub driver on my days off while drive transit buses full time
For sure! If I didn't have my small businesses it would be rough/impossible. Awesome that you still do it on the side!^_^
@@MysticHealer27 yeah I liked driving school buses, and I had a 3 school route soo I was getting them hours but it also required getting a second job too offset the lower pay and not owning any tax money every tax season that was the hardest part, soo already having a cdl I went to go drive transit buses while still being able too go back when I can and keep doing school bus routes and charters
I'm a bus driver that has been driving for a while now and make 33.60 an hour. A bonus of$ New drivers start at $27.00 to $30 an hr with a bonus of 3,000$ . Paid weekly. Our company pays a maximum of 7hrs a day even if you work only 5. You can bring your kids to school. Some companies in my area pay a full 8 hrs even if you work only 5 which is nice. Interesting to know what people make in different parts of the country.
That's amazing! I'm happy for you! 😁 You guys probably don't have nearly as high a turnover rate as we do! I am sticking with it though, we keep getting annual raises so it helps. This year we are making just over $22. Still getting paid monthly but they might be moving to bi-weekly next year so we'll see. :) Thank you for watching and commenting! I love hearing about the differences in our job depending on location. ^_^
i just got hired as a bus driver just waiting my background check and stuff to come back. we start at $23/hr here and get paid monthly.
That's awesome, congratulations! :) Our pay got upped to $22 per hour and they just gave us a 2% raise so hopefully we will be at $23 soon as well. Happy New Year! ^_^
I’m 23 and currently driving the suburban vans while I train to get my class b for a school bus. I find it a lil hard for the under the hood part and the static break test
The under the hood part is definitely a lot to take in. What helped me was making a video of my instructor pointing to and naming each part and then stating what I should be looking for. For our static break test they broke it down pretty well for us.
"1. Turn bus ON, build air pressure.
2. Turn bus OFF, turn key to the RUN position.
3. Apply FOOT on brake, HOLD
4. PUSH IN parking brake
5. HOLD foot on brake for ONE MINUTE
6. Air pressure should not drop more than 3PSI in that one minute.
7. When minute is up start pumping brakes down
8. Around 60 PSI the warning buzzer should go off
9. Around 30 PSI the parking brake should POP out." But of course we had to narrate everything we were doing when we were doing the test starting with "My bus is in neutral, my parking brake is set and they key is in the off position, my bus is safe to start!"
@@MysticHealer27 that advice actually helped. Within three weeks I was ready to take the test but because of school I have to wait another month because there isn’t any available slots. Honestly, the parking portion was so easy. I literally got it the first try.
That's awesome!! Congratulations! :)) I had to wait a couple months as well to officially start.
Major update. I got my Class B for school bus Wednesday 💪🏾🩶
Yess! Congratulations!!:) We go back to school this coming Wednesday hehe ^_^.
Need to add this. Went through training for active shooter on the school bus yesterday. Nope don’t pay enough for this job!
They need that training in more places. I would definitely remember if I went through that in training...But yea, there are definitely some worries about a job like this one that money could never compensate for.
Quick question.. first thanks so much for sharing because like u I also have a homeschooler and a three yr. old. So you have no idea how helpful your videos have been. My question may seem silly but I also having a three year old how do u handle bathroom breaks for him while driving such long periods of time?? I have my bus driver interview Monday. Info is very appreciated.
Hi Jennifer, thank you so much for watching! Your question isn't silly at all. We are able to run into all the schools in our county to use the restroom. We just have to show our badge. Most drivers have a small window in between their routes to do so. For us, we have a small gap in between middle and elementary so when we drop off the middle school kids we run into the middle school. Then when waiting for my midday during layover I am at the park with the kids and there is a restroom there or outside of the high school. Hope this helps and looking forward to good news about your interview! You've got this!^_^
I'm rooting for you with your interview today!^_^
Pay weeekly in Michigan
That's awesome!:)
I like your channel!! Also what benefits do they offer?
Thank you! Here they offer Dental, Medical, Life insurance, Hospital insurance and some others. I can't remember them all off the top of my head. It's just that since we don't make a lot, the benefits take a good chunk out of the check but if you have side gigs it works ^_^.
@@MysticHealer27 gotcha. I just got hired toddy as a driver but training in about a month. And still at current job. And also they offer pTO. 401k. The owner puts 15% and then we can put our own. And Medical/dental/vision. As well as summers off if we want and $600 every week if we decide not to work in the summers (summer school). Idk if I truly am a fan of the break in between tho
That's awesome! Congratulations! Last year I didn't do summer school but this year I am. I get my route on Friday! ^_^

I start training May 13th, nervous 😂. We get paid bi- monthly(set date for pay each month 2X a month) and start out at $15/hr and get $18.75 once we pass to get our cdl. The way the said it, I think I’ll be getting close to 8hrs a day, 5:30am -9am last drop off. Then pick up at 1 pm, last drop off around 5:30-6pm. So close to or right at 40 hrs a week. I hope that’s right. I survived off of 13k a year for 2 years and it was tough. Having to still pay my way, plus car insurance and phone bill. I nearly cried every time I got paid 😅. I just knew it wouldn’t last. I’m nervous but excited to start my new career path though. Thanks for the informative video.
That's so exciting! I hope it is 8 hours and that training goes well for you! I'm sorry things have been rough but hopefully this is the start of good things! ❤ You've got this! ^_^ I'm looking forward to updates!:)
So how was your first day of training?^_^
@@MysticHealer27 it was great, Dsy 2 was great, using the cdl test app really helps out a lot! Also a lot of it seems to kinda be common sense in away so I knew way more than I thought I did. I just gotta push myself to study. The instructor will take the whole class(9 of us) down to the dmv this Friday to test for our permits. I’m very excited. However I am disappointed in the pay but I’ll survive 😂. So we’ll only get 25 hours a week unless we ask to pick up other routes throughout the day for like field trips, after school programs etc. I’m loving it all so far and can’t stop watching UA-cam videos about being a bus driver and day in the life of bus drivers. Thanks for asking 🙌
@DeionDeion-ox1zf Yay, I'm so happy for you! Sorry about the hours, that part can be rough but I hope you're able to pick things up to make what you'd like. I started out in a shortage so I had a lot I could pickup and then a lot of drivers retired so this year I have a midday. Rooting for you! ^_^
@@MysticHealer27 I’m on day 4, I take the test to get my permit tomorrow. So far I’ve been crushing the practice tests so im confident I’ll pass and get my permit 😊
Zum pays 27-33$ per hour to start depending on your experience. Its sad drivers must accept having to work multiple jobs to make ends meet.
????? I know school bus drivers making $$$ just driving school bus. They work the summer too.
I guess I just depends on where you are.
sad how as a driver we take on HUGE responsibility and get paid so little.
Anyone in Gwinnett GA? I’m thinking about doing it. How you like/don’t like it so far?
Gwinnett county bus systems? They seem strict but pay in the range.
Im starting my bus driver career this week getting training. But they said i start out as a sub driver and said its not full time and cant get full time hours. Is this how you started or did i just get shafted?
I started out with my own high and middle school routes and subbed for any elementary needed. I ended up doing doubles most of my 1st year and was full time pretty quickly. There was a huge shortage at the time. Now I have my own elementary and still do doubles when needed. Just always ask if there's anything they need covered and they'll remember you if you're in the area where they need something covered. There are sub drivers here which are full time. It depends.
@MysticHealer27 Thank you for the fast response here in Washington State. Almost all school districts are hiring bus drivers, and I'm hoping I will get full-time fast as possible thank you 😊
You're welcome!^_^ I've got my fingers crossed for you!:)

@lockonstrat8525 I'm looking forward to hearing about your progress!^_^ Thank you for the feedback. :)

@@stinab2007 I passed general and passenger, but I have to take my School bus again on Wednesday!
What district do u work in?
I'd have to look into that. Are you in VA as well?
How can you make living with so little pay?
I do things on the side and my husband works as well.
I just started in december, they just gave me a 2025 bus because mine ofc failed inspection and I'm getting 33 a hour (paychecks is by weekly)
That's awesome! I don't even know what the 2025 buses look like yet 😂 One of my co-workers has a 2024 and it has a lot of crazy features. Are you happy your old bus failed inspection?
@MysticHealer27 Yes it was a horrible 2007 that was out literally every other week
@MysticHealer27 I find it funny how my bus has more features than the bus driver's bus that's been driving since 1996
And it's 8 years newer as well lol
I can tell we don't have a seniority list just by how I got a 2025 with the first light signage and stop sign
Being a bus driver is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs because it gives you freedom to run your bus and a steady paycheck.
I’m a transportation recruiter in Austin, TX. HIRING … high starting pay.
It sure is! :)
I really thought they made more money than that. That is not going to be the direction I go. You need multiple jobs to make that work, which sucks.
Hi Robert, thanks for watching! Yes, unfortunately a lot of drivers have multiple jobs to make it work but it depends on the area you live in as it is possible to do 40 hour weeks if you have a midday.
I have an question is does basic math skills require for school bus driver ?
I belive it depends on where you are. Where I am we have paper timesheets and are required to tally up all our times. It also helps to be able to calculate that your paycheck is correct for the pay period. Some places are fully digital though and other than timesheets I haven't had an instances where math was required.
@@MysticHealer27 I am not very good with basic math skill at all but thanks for answering it I appreciate it
You're welcome! There are time calculator apps that you can download on your phone to help you calculate the time. That way you won't be stressed about getting it right and can double check everything before turning it in.
I'm sorry, for some reason your comment was flagged and it didn't show up. Have you taken the test yet?
Sad..the salary..then they wonder why there is a shortage of drivers !
Yes! Most drivers stay because they love the job and have another job on the side or like me they are just supplementing their families income.
It really depends where you are driving. Where I live, I'm planning on getting into school bus driving because the companies are paying $25-$30 starting, are unions with benefits and other perks. Some drivers at my kids' school are making $800 a week after taxes.
Also, you can make more money if you do not mind driving extra hours.
Man 1500 a month is terrible. Definitely worth getting the cdl and i see the advantage of having your kids with you but damn that's not worth the work. That's terrible. I hope ot opens the door to a better paying driving job for you.
Yeah I'm hoping the pay improves but I have a midday this year so I get 40 hours a week. :)
I’m 27 started driving school busses at 23 in NYC. Got paid close to nothing
We're the same age!^_^. Are you still school bus driving?
Same
Hello mam,
I am Indian bus driver here,How could I get school bus driving job in US?
Hi there! :)
Aside from documents to allow you to work and live in the US,
you would need a good driving record and a valid Driver's license in the state you're living in. Then you'd need to get a CDL permit CLASS B with a P and S endorsement eventually leading to your CDL license. You'd also have to apply for the bus driving position at some point before or after getting your CDL permit so they can help you get your license.. Each state may have additional requirements, for example, my state requires you to be 21 or older. You must also pass a drug test and continue to do so. Sorry that may seem like lot but once you start the process it gets easier.
@@MysticHealer27 I dont need to join school for bus driving there?
I don't need to apply for just DL there,Directly CDL?
Makes me sad to think I spent so many years as a driver and never got paid well. It was always a fall back job when I could not find a job flipping burgers for the same wage or more for far less responsibility. There is NEVER OT because you cannot drive more then 10 hrs in a day and most employers say it is a Federal, Department of Transportation regulated job and you don't get all the benefits of regular workers at a regular company. Lots to say for example...Having to clean vomit from the Bus was never told to me. I am afraid to use my CDL now, there are too many distracted drivers out there and when, not if, someone hits you, the nightmare's don't go away very easily. Don't do it if you are reading this and thinking about being a driver for a living. Unless you are extremely lucky, stay away.
Nyc transit bus operator top pay is around $40/per hour
I think I would just drive a regular bus there for you can make far more money 💰 no sense in getting 1500 a month too little of salary 🙋🏻♀️💯‼️💵
I definitely understand where you're coming from! The thing is I would probably make the same after paying for childcare if I switched to another job.
3:30 you're getting ripped off.
