My Cat HATES my New Kitten - Help? How to Introduce Cats!

  • Here at Kitten School, the happiest days are when my foster kitties get picked up to go off to their forever homes. Often the adopting family already has a cat, or cats, at home...so I try to prepare them on how to introduce the new kitty to lessen any drama. But cats are highly territorial and when a new cat suddenly appears in their home it can cause confusion and chaos. A cat who has always been relaxed and mellow can suddenly turn into a growling, hissing beast who lashes out at the newcomer, and even at his beloved owner! The new cat is often terrified - it is not only in a brand new place, but there's another cat who clearly does not want it to be there! This can all be very emotional for everyone involved, and sometimes it can seem that the existing cat will NEVER accept the new cat. Well, as someone who has experienced many years of introducing new cats to my home, I can give you some tips on how to make this process easier. You first have to understand that most cats will act hostile (or scared) of a new cat or kitten. This is normal! It just takes time for the cats to get to know one another...sometimes this can be a few days, other times it can be a few weeks. You want to introduce your cats SLOWLY, and always monitor the situation to prevent any serious fights or attacks. Hissing, growling, swatting - this is probably going to happen. Be patient and calm. NEVER yell at or hit a cat who is acting out- it won't help and will make things worse! You just have to be calm, encourage the cats to play and eat together, separate them if there's aggression, and BE PATIENT. The cats will need to first get used to each other, and then establish their social order in the household. But they usually DO work it out. And sometimes, even the hissiest, swattiest of "enemies" can eventually become the very best of cat friends!
Here's a few things you can get to help ease the transition when introducing a new cat. I have used them all and they have often made a difference:
Feliway - This plug-in diffuser mimics natural feline pheromones that the cats can smell and is calming to many cats. We have used this here at Kitten School for years and I think it has helped keep the peace with my resident cats, who sometimes resent the "intrusion" of foster kitties on their territory. The scent is not noticeable to humans and you just plug it in the wall, where it will waft the calming pheromones into the air. Might take a week or so to notice a difference, but many multi-cat owners swear by it!
Bach Rescue Remedy for Pets - This homeopathic herbal calming formula has been used to help people relax for ages and is now available in a pet formula safe for cats. A few drops in your cat's food or water can help calm him or her in stressful times, such as a trip to the vet, moving, or the introduction of a new kitty into the house

Patience is the key and not to rush it.. My male cat was horrified when we brought in another male.. Of course we kept them separated initially but the few times they did see each other they would scream and yell.. And on the odd occasion had a couple of punch ups.. It took about 4 months of feeding them in separate spaces but also able to see each other.. And later having them both on leash during little introductions.. Its also best not to leave them Alone together even after they seem reasonably friendly.. Now they absolutely adore each other and quite frankly even ignore us😀

He is probably as big as her now and yes, he does attack her back sometimes but fortunately never is real aggression, I mean the one meant to hurt. I have identified it as territorial spats, lots of swatting and hissing but no real damage. They have period of calm, everything seem to be ok between them and then all the sudden they are at it. I really hope this will go away one day. The older seems less defensive now but it has been very slow progress.

This is so helpful. We are getting a new kitten in the next couple weeks as long as she is negative for FIV (Her momma has it so the kittens have to be tested). We have a black cat named Kimba we've had since kittenhood (She's 13 years old now) and I'm expecting a lot of the hissing and growling that you mentioned. I'm hoping this kitten can provide her with some companionship in her older years that she never necessarily received from other cats before. She had a brother (Himalayan) for only about six months until he developed urinary tract infections and was blocked several times. We were in college and had little to no money to help the little guy out so after 3500 dollars we had to put him down, so Kimba didn't have much of a chance to hang out with her brother. I'm hoping she will find comfort in another kitty sibling.

I have a 1 yr old neutered male cat. We just found a 6 week old (?) female in our garage. The garage has always been his domain, but the new kitty was apparently using his litter box and eating his food and had been around a while before we knew it. The first night we caught her I put in her in a carrier and left her in the garage for the night. My boy cried all night and hissed at her a few times. I took her to the vet and got her cleaned up and now she’s sleeping in the spare bathroom. My boy seems very curious, sniffing the door and waiting outside the door, even trying to nose his way in the moment it’s cracked. I’ve taken her out and placed her in her carrier and left her in the laundry room while I clean her bathroom and her litter box. My boy goes in and sniffs her blankets and even used her litter box. It’s been 2 days and he seems so curious about meeting her. Is it too soon? He has free range of the house but I have kept her in her bathroom so far. She doesn’t seem to be bothered by him- actually seems to want him around. Prob scared and lonely. He’s a sweet boy but idk if he’s really excited to meet her or ready to kick out the invader
    Sorry for the book 🤣

Turns out the two kittens are sick with Giardia and also ringworm. The kittens are now secluded to one of the bedrooms while they get better and we will just need to start from scratch. Thankfully Westside didn’t catch either Giardia or ringworm. Trying not to stress. Focusing on getting the kittens 100 percent healthy, still giving lots of love and attention to Westside. This is really challenging. Thanks for the video. ❤

    • @vixxcelacea2778
      @vixxcelacea2778 4 роки тому +2

You should reintroduce them. It's not good or normal for cats to actually fight. Having a small swatting match or some hissing to re-establish social heiarchy might be normal in cats that aren't super close, but fighting is not cool. It's stressful and could escalate to cats actually hurting each other.
If reintroducing doesn't work, you should probably rehome one of the kitties unless you are willing to split your house and keep them away from each other for 15-20 years.

Hi! This video was very helpful. Our 12 year old female cat has always been moody and miserable and trusts no one but my husband and I. She has always snuggled with us and slept with us every night. Unfortunately she only "tolerates" our 10 & 7 year old children. They have never gotten to hold her and can barely get a pet in before she tries to bite and hit them. So we made the decision to adopt a new female kitten to allow the children to experience a kind cat and enjoy their pet! We've been very careful with introducing the kitten to our older cat. The kitten is only 12 weeks old and very sweet and easy going. The older cat has spent the last 2 weeks growling and hissing at the kitten when they are together (supervised) for an hour or two a day. We keep the kitten in our master bedroom during the day and in the master bathroom overnight. She sleeps quietly in her bed all night- she is an angel! We had hoped the older cat would continue to sleep with us, but when she jumps in our bed she smells the kitten and hisses and runs out of the room. She is very angry with us and letting us know all the time. She is only nice when she wants her meals in the morning and evening. She is very smart, very manipulative and very CRANKY. We love her so much despite her attitude, and just want to help her realize this kitten will be a great companion for her and she will be able to remain the dominant cat of the house so there is nothing to fear. I think she's scared and annoyed. I've tried giving her the towel that we rubbed all over the kitten. I have purchased the plug in "FeelAway" stuff that is supposed to release pheromones to relax her. And I have even tried calming cat treats. She's 22lbs and quite a beast, can be aggressive. Nothing is working. It's only been 2 weeks... so I know its still early and won't give up trying to help with the adjustment. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! jackie.orlando@hotmail.com

how is it now? I think you shouldn't have made the kitten stay in your bedroom, preferably the kitten should have been shut in one of your children's bedrooms since you got the kitten for them anyway. your bedroom is t he older cat's primary territory, unlike your children's bedrooms. hopefully they're starting to get along by now. if they aren't, you should wash all your bedding and furniture in your room, try to get dominant kitty to feel safe in your bedroom again, then let the kitten stay in your children's room(s) during the day and night. then start the process from step 1 once older kitty is comfortable in your room again.

Thank you so much for this! We’ve had my kitten for 3 days now. And I had him in our master bedroom. But i didn’t think about our cat being shut out. So now at night I put him in our bathroom and I let our other cat roam. My question is when do you officially know they’re good to be left alone without supervision?

You will just know. When they dont fight extra brutal anymore, when you can wash dishes without worrying about them. If you can sleep with no wild fighting, then its probably ok. Start small. Personally it took 3 weeks for my cats. From really bad to friends.

My son came home with an unwanted kitten and unfortunately I was on a trip when this kitten came to the house and our old sour puss was apparently brought into the room with the new cat and introduced that way. I had threatened to get rid of the newcomer but have fall gor her cuteness. The old cat is spending more time out than in and refuses to go upstairs, she even growls when the kitten is not there. The kitten just wants to play but if she comes too close she just gets swatted and hissed at and there is this growling as soon as the old cat sees the kitten from the other side of the room or garden. After some days like this we are now keeping the kitten in my son's room and hopefully the old cat will return to the upstairs. We are going to keep them apart as much as possible and hopefully the older cat will calm down.

Hi, I just watched this video. 1st night with our new family member. My new kitten is in the master bathroom while we transition him to his new home and the sights and smells. He was at a Petco in a cat condo. He is so sweet but still very timid. I open the door and he runs right into the cat carrier. My one senior cat keeps sniffing the door. He knows something is up. The kitten hasn’t gone to the door even after my older cat was scratching for me to open it. I hope it isn’t war once they meet in person. Our male cat is very territorial and our female senior does not want to be bothered with her brother. So this should be interesting. I just want them to like him. He’s a doll! Thank you for posting this video. Going to try feeding in front of one another after a few days.

We got a kitten 3 days back, the kitten is 2 months old and the cat we already had is 4 months old. The older cat keeps chasing the younger one al the time. He attacks her, pushes her in a corner, grows and hisses all the time. The little one just wanna play but it's scared for him now. We have the little one in a room with a big glass door, the door is a little open so they can sniff. We let them in the same room for a few minutes so they can get used to each other. Today we feel really sad for both of them, it's nice to know we are not the only one with these issues. Hope we find a way to get them both happy.

I took in a stray 4 years ago and she is wonderful. Now I have another stray cat outside. It took me almost 2 weeks to get her to come up to me and then trust me. We are now very close and I want to bring her in. The place where I live is very small. Kitchen, Living Room, Bedroom and very small bathroom. It is going to be very difficult to keep them separated. I decided to get one of the hundred dollar cages from Chewy. Just ordered it today. My idea is to put the cage in the bedroom, keep the door closed and sometimes allow my resident cat in the bedroom. Does this sound like a good idea? My resident cat would still have full access to most of the house. I can let the new one out of the cage once in awhile with the bedroom door closed and can also put the resident cat in the bathroom once in awhile and let the new one roam around the house. The new cat follows me around wherever I go when I'm outside. I have to put food on one side of the house so I can get away to my car and drive away without her following me. Also, the new cat is still very skinny. I've been feeding her for a month and a half now and also took her to the vets for her shots and a checkup.

We have had the 5 month old for a few days. Sometimes my older cat is sweet and licks him but other times he hitting at bitting. Is there anything we can do different to help them adjust?? Well the older one mainly.

It's been 3 weeks now with a new kitten at home. We are fostering it with the hope that if our cat accepts it we can also keep it. It was barely one month old though and sick when we found it so we only gave things with her scent to our old cat for at least a week. Since it is still very small and only has one eye left, we are very reluctant in them meeting. We placed some times the food of our cat next to the door of the bath with the door closed and the kitten on the other side so she would eat while smelling the scent. At some point she just refused to eat. We also let the old one go and smell the kittens toilet. We got them together at a distance three times: there was always hissing and growling of course but we were calm and I was speaking to our cat calmly and telling her she is a good cat and it is a good kitten. Second time she went close to smell its tail. I let her and she just left a bit scared after that. Third time she again came closer and smelled its tail but this time she hit it with her paw out of nowhere before I cpuld react, something that alarmed me very much since the kitten is only 1,5 month old and, as I said, with only one eye. That happened yesterday.
Today in the morning she was sitting again opposite the door where it was and growling and hissing. I felt a bit fed up after her behaviour yesterday and whenever she growled I told her a firm "Don't!", or even clapped a bit my hands together at some point. I just heard in the video that I should never do that but it's already three weeks and I'm afraid about the baby... Really not sure what else to do and how to proceed from here. I have patience but we WILL have to give the kitten away if she can't accept it and we have to know in the following few weeks if there is a chance for that or if we should just put an advertisement looking for adoption...

I had no idea it would be this difficult. I have a 15 year old cat who lost her brother a year ago. I debated getting her an older cat thinking maybe it would be less aggravating. It’s been a week and this morning at 5:30 am they were growling , hissing , smacking at the door so I got my 15 year old away from the door. The adoptive cat is 8. I let one out while other is locked in room sleeping so they both get each others scents. I swapped their blankets as well. I just put up the screen on the door so tomorrow I’m going to let them see each other and just see what happens. I have 30 days to give back the cat I got from APL if it just doesn’t work out. I also notice I haven’t been able to bond with the new 8 year old either. He is so different from the one that passed a year ago that I think it’s making me miss the one who passed. I know every cat Is different but I’m thinking maybe I wasn’t as ready as I thought. I am also using those plug ins that is suppose to help calm the cats. I don’t see that working yet either. Now my 15 year old doesn’t want to leave the bedroom.

My resident cat hates my guts after I got 2 new kittens who needed a home. I have the space for the two additional cats and thought it was a good idea. My adult cat never used to hiss at me and was happy and lovingly spoiled. Now he wants nothing to do with me and hisses at me when I try to play with him or pet him. Of course I will continue to keep the babies separated from my 4-year old cat, but I fear that I'm gonna need the patience of a saint and hope my cat likes me again someday. He is even lashing out at the dog, whom the cat used to like and play with. I'm heartbroken that my resident cat is so very unhappy.

I've brought a new kitten a boy named Prince I have a 5 year old female cat who I've had since 2017, I brought prince home yesterday afternoon ,princess was very stressed and hissy towards him while being in the carrier ,so I closed my bedroom door as my flat is only a small 1 bed with no stairs ,soon as you enter my flat is has a small bathroom on the right then kitchen left (no door) u open another door and u got the living room then u open the door on the left u have my bedroom so its literally a door in and out of my room to living kitchen ect.
So for now prince is in my room with me while I've had to keep my adult cat in the living room until my play pen arrives tomz so that way my adult cat can come in my room with me again if she don't hate me still cause I've tried to pet her and she literally was gonna go for me cause she's pissed at me ,I've also brought a feliway friends air dispenser thing so hopefully that helps but the main thing I'm needing is the play pen then I will be stress free!! I can't even go sit in the living room and watch TV with her cause my Controller is broken till I get my new one , pray my adult cat will accept my new baby kitten 😫

My kitten was born under my shed; his mom is a feral cat I feed that only had one kitten. I decided to take him in after about three months, because 1) I don't want to get bunches of stray cats in the neighborhood and 2) he's very sweet.
I would almost always come in and let him smell the kitten's scent after playing with him. We did this many times. The kitten would also interact with him at the door some. I started letting the kitten come in the house for five minutes or so and only letting him stay right at the door. My older cat wasn't a fan and still isn't on day two of the kitten living in the house. He growls and hisses at the kitten, but thankfully that's all. The kitten fortunately is very, very, very persistent in his attempts to make friends with him, and I'm hoping it works out. He perhaps isn't as aggressive as the first night, but I am worried. He is getting older, and I was hoping having the kitten would give him company and someone to play with to sort of keep him young. He really is young at heart. Maybe a week from now will make the difference.

Hello! So I have a grown cat. She goes outside for most of the day (if it were up to me she would by an inside cat but i currently live with my parents and she meows at the door asking to go out and so my parents just let her out... she honestly likes it tho and i think it helps her be active and not gain too much weight so i let it slide?!) she isn’t on a regular feeding schedule because of how often she goes outside. I just got a new kitten. I’ve done the sent swapping thing many times. And both cats have seen eachother. I did the kitten, cage thing at first and then just showed them one another while I held the kitten. There’s been LOTS of hissing and growling from my grown cat. My grown cat has even lunged at me while i was holding the kitten which definitely frightened all of us. She’s not a friendly cat (to humans or other cats). In fact my family does not like her at all cuz they consider her to be a “mean” cat. But she’s my baby so I will not to give up on her. (Don’t worry. My family loves me and therefore they’re nice and respectful to her. Haha.) I’ve fallin’ in love with this kitten too so I’m determined to make this work but I’m not sure what to do next or how to proceed?? The kitten sleeps in a different room and my grown cat sleeps on my bed with me! Please help me know what to do next. Sorry for the long comment and thanks for your help :)

Hi there! It sounds like your older cat is still establishing dominance over the new kitten. This can sometimes take a few weeks, or even months. As long as no one is getting hurt then swatting and hissing are ok. Just make sure the kitten and cat each have a quiet, private place to rest so they don't get too overstimulated and fight. Sounds like you are on the right track!

My cat Mia (girl and is spayed) is 3 years old and is a really calm and silent cat. And the new cat Safir (boy) that we brought a few weeks ago is like 6 months and really playfully and is very hyperactive. When we brought Safir home for the first time, Mia was really shocked and would watch Safir while he was walking around the house of curiosity. But when they met eye to eye, Mia started hissing and Safir would go after her and it See eachother in the eyes like for a while. We didn't sadly do it like in the video. We had to keep it separate. But we've just let Safir free walking in the house. Safir would walk Mia after and sometimes Mia would would walk after Safir. At first Safir would just look at her and try to come closer, but now Safir is jumping from behind playfully on Mia, but Mia always hisses and she punching him and runs away and Safir runs after. But Mia doesn't Punch him really dangerously with claws. But Mia is behaving really dramatic. This was our first time to have a second cat and we didn't know how to do or what to do. And we don't have a big house. What should we do now, will they still like eachother even when weeks have passed. Mia won't let him near when he wants to approach her and play. Please help!!! 😭

Hi Melike, thanks for the comment! Honestly, I think it sounds like tings with Mia and Safir are going very well. It's natural for a 6 moth old cat to want to play, and even 'tease", the older cat. And Mia responds like any self-respecting adult who didn't;t bargain for children does - "get the &^$@# away from me, kid -- hisss! Smack!" I think that it's just going to take Safir growing up a little bit before Mia accepts him. As long as the two are not full on fighting then a little hissing and swatting is okay. It happens in my house and my cats have been together for years! Be sure to allow Mia her privacy, like a room where she can get away from Safir for a few hours a day. Kittens can be really, really annoying. But they will work it out. This is all completely normal. Just give each cat enough attention, and try playing with Safir a couple of times a day to wear off some of that teenage energy. They will find their balance, I promise! Let us know how things go.

@@KittenSchool And one more question, is it ok if Safir Jump on her and they roll on the ground and sometimes Safir bites also the tail and the stomache. Is that ok?

I’ve got a new rescue kitten, her owner abandoned her for a new home very far away in another city, my dad and I had to drive away for 1 hour and we got the cat, she was scared at first but started to warm up to me, she would just stay on my lap and wouldn’t leave me, when we got back home she started hissing at my 2 other cats, my 2 other cats didn’t hiss and greeted her instead as they came from a breeder and they both lived with lots of other types of cats. So I’m just trying to find a way so they can bond as I don’t wanna loose the new cat, plus she has a new twin brother now so idk what to do..

Just adopted another cat, another Bengal and it’s been a nightmare. The new one is super aggressive and even bytes me. I’m at my wits end.

See my older cat has already wanred up to the kitten I think. It's the kitten that's hissing rarely when they play

Thanks for this. I've just adopted a 9 month old cat and she doesn't like my 3 year old cat. I think she's scared as she was used for breeding before we adopted her, she's very underweight but feisty. My older cat on the other hand loves others and is too lazy to chase her. 🤞 She stops hissing at him.

This was very encouraging. I've been super stressed thinking I made the wrong decision to bring a kitten to my 11 month old kitty. We have been going very slow and what this video encourages thank, Hopeful
