@@vienicestyles6122 reintroduce and follow all these steps!! It’s never too late! Cats generally WANT to get along with their roommates:) but they have a lot of animal behaviors and sometimes just need another chance. Best of luck pal!
Last year I adopted a 7 yr old male who is truly the Ghandi of cats. An 8 week old female kitten decided to adopt us by showing up in our yard until the neighbor said we should keep her. My big boy welcomed her with open paws. He grooms her, protects her, plays gently with her. I’m so proud of him.
Its not this hard. I have had cats for over 30 years. Take them with me to friends houses with other animals. As long as your cat trusts you then its easy. If the cat dont trust you 100% then its hard to meet other animals for a cat.
We adopted a 3-yr old male just yesterday and brought him home to our 2-year old brother/sister bonded pair. Of course, we had no clue how to facilitate the introductions but we were so lucky that our new boy is just so mellow and well-mannered. He immediately knew that he was the new cat in town and he set course to be respectful and non-threatening. Just over 36 hours later, our 3 babies are living in peace. Sometimes, you get lucky but also just use common sense to have a successful introduction: expect hissing and growling; have a place where the new arrival can be safe, give your current babies lots of love, watch everyone carefully (adopting during the holiday weekend worked to our advantage), definitely have separate feeding and litter box areas. And calm down the energy in the house; if the humans are keyed up, the cats will be, too.
I put a small towel, that smelled like my kitten, down where our other two ate. I put their plates on top of the towel so they would associate the kitten smell with good things. My kitten was ready after 3 days and they all get along great! Im watching again as we are adopting my kittens younger brother. Exactly one year younger! Im allergic to cats so I treated myself to a Siberian. I live high in the Rockies so it's a good choice for the nasty weather we can get. I made him a great cat.
That’s a great suggestion. My resident cat is not food motivated and not interested AT ALL in eating outside the door of the new kitten’s sanctuary. No food/ treat will convince him otherwise. I will try the towel tip asap 😊
Thank you for sharing this post! The methods mentioned do take time and patience, but worked for us. I don't think you can rush the process and expect positive results. Backing up the steps may also be necessary and is ok. We took on my sister in law's deaf, 12 year old cat. We introduced him to our 6 year old male (who 6 months before lost his best cat buddy) very slowly. We followed the steps as described and supervised. It took some time, but both cats eventually accepted the situation, one another and learned to coexist, even sleeping together. There were points along the way when I did not think we were going to be successful, but our vet said "time is simply your friend" and we found this to be true. Please don't give up trying. We all need a place we can call home. Best cat wishes!
I'm also curious about the timeline? With all of this I'm starting to think 2 cats aren't meant to be in the same apartment :/ if in the end the scenario to be looking for is them to tolerate each other :/ I want to get another cat so my resident cat wont be so lonely....on the other hand, maybe shes better off alone?..
5 steps are fine. but we have a problem. 2 cats brother and sister (3 years old) and husky (9 year old) and we just found a kitten next to our house. Around 6 months old, belly is shaved (after being spayed), not chipped. And I am slowly trying to get them acclimated to one another. 3rd day, girl cat is super upset, hissing and growling, boy cat today did a nose kiss to a kitten but the kitten hissed. husky doesn't care, she just wants to come closer and sniff and the kitten is terrified of a big, scary thing. we are trying to locate the owner with no luck so far.
We recently adopted two kittens after losing our dog to cancer. We have a senior male 12 who is very sweet, affectionate and mellow. He has always been apart of a multi-pet household and since our dog passed showed signs of being lonely. Hence the two kittens. We are slowly introducing them and he took to our dog right away when we brought him home. First visual with one the kittens he was hissing a bit, so we are slowing down introduction again. thank you for the tips!
I just got back from a Humane Society very close to home. I went with my mother and I am using her laptop right now. Anyway, I went to the "special needs" section of the cat section. It literally broke my heart. We went there after my mother told me of kitten with a partially blind, with another type of genetic disorder, and last week when she went there, a couple were returning this kitten back as it really required special treatment and care. Anyways I decided to see this kitten but the good news is, that the kitten found a new home. I saw another, slightly older cat, that caught my attention, and literally wanted me to pet him and give him attention as I stuck my finger through the enclosure of it's cage as did another cat that just recently lost an eye. and is recovering from surgery. It really broke my heart so bad that I almost full-on cried and not even caring who saw me, a grown man at 5'11'' at 190lbs, and all tatted up. It affected me that much. I am planning to return and to adopt a cat. I just wish I could save them all. I'm really not a people person, but I do love animals and it makes me so angry that people would abuse such a defenseless animal, one of God's creations that we are to be faithful stewards of. I can't even finish this comment without tears welling up in my eyes as I think about my experience from earlier. I get paid next week so I will be returning and I will adopt a new cat that really needs a home to prevent it from being euthanized, I care that much. I encourage others to do the same. Thank you.
My new kitten immediately wanted to go explore the rest of the house. We actually had to change the sanctuary room we originally decided on because he wanted to be with someone
Very helpful. We're at day five and we did our intro a little different. Our 1st cat saw the new kitten on day one and has seen her every day since. We keep the kitten upstairs and she has her own room with food, toys and litter. We have a pet gate at the top of the stairs to keep them separated by still able to see each other and get used to each other. We'll give treats and play with both of them around the gate and we just introduced feeding them around the gate at their dinner and breakfast today. It went pretty good. The older one was a little on edge but she did eat about half her food, so we moved her dish back to her regular spot so she could finish. So far things seem to be progressing nicely. Hoping to be able to get the gate removed for good within a week. Fingers crossed🤞
I've gotten a new cat/kitten recently, and she's got a tiny little voice and only ever meows when I'm about to feed her. The vocal one you had at the beginning, reminded me of my last cat who would "talk" to me for ages☺️
Relevant to my life right now. I'm moving on Friday and I've been plotting how to introduce my boy to my partner's. Glad to see I'm doing it right according to the experts.
I foster cats and always stress a slow introduction whenever one of my fosters goes to a family with a resident cat. A lot of time things don't go as planned - the new cat snuck out of quarantine and the two cats saw each other. I suggested walking back to the previous step and a lot of people just decided to forego the rest of the process and wing it. They ended up making the integration a lot more difficult than it has to be.
Mine had gotten along for years, then the younger one went crazy. My guess is it was the older ones are food obsessed and he’s a nibbler so they ate his food. Feeding them separately helped but he still went crazy and when he flips he gets on a shelf or under the bed and lung fu noises all of us if we go in the room. The cat he fights with will mostly ignore him but if he starts something that can’t isn’t having it so I get a ball of screaming merged tabby that I can’t separate. As a result, I’m down to time sharing the house. One cat is a lover, not a fighter, so he is the one allowed out all the time. I don’t know what else to do. Funny thing is if I feed them close to the door, the food obsessed cat will grab the other cats food from under the door and either pull it under or flip it over. So here we are in timeshare, feliway cat purgatory.
@@bmiles4131if they’ve gotten along for years prior and then all of a sudden one of them has an issue with the other cat. It could indicate a health complication and you should talk to your vet to make sure.
we recently found a blind, emaciated kitten. I currently own 3 cats, two of which took to the kitten right away. surprisingly, my third cat, who is the sweetest of the three, does not like the kitten at all. we're taking it slow. 😊
I just adopted 2 male kittens (Siamese) and I have a 4 year old adult female Siamese. I did the scent swap with tea towels and it seemed to work really well. they are not best buds yet, but they have been sharing the house for a few days with no real issues. I also got collars for all of them with little bells. That seems to have been a good move. They can hear each other coming and are not shocked if they come upon each other.
I "might" (very good chance) be getting a rehomed male Ragdoll cat this Friday ( Dec. 15, 2023) already have a Siamese also rehomed last Jan. I'm going to try this method, just hope they get along sooner rather than later so the isolation won't last too long. When I got the Siamese boy last Jan. he wasn't strange at all, slept on my bed the first night and bonded with me very quickly so I hope he adapts well 🤞🤞I like the idea of the bells, will definitely try it! Good luck with your babies!
@@kanases yesterday was great. I came in to find one of the babies curled up with the adult kitty on top of the cat tree and the other on the level just below. She still gets a little irritated with them (I guess because they have so much energy) but they are slowly acclimating to each other. Hope you have success!
I adopted a 1 year old male cat last October and my 6 year old resident cat doesn't like him. I've tried everything from rubbing their chins and faces with towels and swapping it to their respective rooms, to having 2 baby gates stacked on top of each other so the 1 year old doesn't jump over. I've tried the nice smelling scented collars and sprays and nothing has worked over the last 11 months. I literally am at a loss right now.
Love hearing you mention Jackson galaxy as a source for you. I was never sure if his practices were good or bad but hearing you mention him makes me feel better about continuing to watch him lol
I had 2 cats - brother and sister (Tobi and Patchi) we lost Tobi them in August last year. Decided to rescue a younger cat, and we picked up Percy a week ago. Patchi is 4.5, and Percy 4 months. We set up a base room for Percy, and I’ve been sleeping in there with him, thought it would be a good way to get his scent on me. 1 day my partner kept Patchi in the main bedroom, to allow Percy to move around the house, before returning him to his base area. Next day, Patchi was out for her usual exploring and we allowed Percy to go into the bedroom and he had a wonder around. They did bump into each other though when returning Percy back to ‘his’ room - & Patchi did hiss at him. I’m worried I’ve unintentionally messed things up & won’t be able to salvage things
It's such an interesting process, I've sorta done well with keeping them distant. The new cat is way to sweet and thinks everyone is her friend. Mine is really serious, going to take time but luckily they have their own space
6 weeks into adopting a 4 year old rescue and introducing him to our 10 year old rescue girl. She still hisses and we're still at the door stage, having moments where we are like 'when will it get better?' but we know even if it takes another 4-6 weeks, we'll get there
@@ProdChikara Everything's great! After 8-10 weeks we began allowing them to be together in the home, despite the hisses we let them co-exist but still kept them at a distance. After 3 months we noticed things were improving, and they could eat near each other. It's just been 4 months, and they're starting to sniff each other's noses, and our 10-year old cat will lie on her back and entice him to play but he's still unsure. They share treats, and will lie kinda near each other... but every week that passes we notice a difference! We used to wish for them to be best friends and realised that's probably too ambitious, but they don't fight, and can live happily alongside each other. Thank you Chikara!
This video is really good as you are using actual example of cats and practical advice! We have a kitten and 2 resident cats who we adore. They are currently at the stage of them eating either side of the door.
Absolutely loved your program!! Thank you!! Well thought out and presented. Just adopted an abandoned young orange Tom I found wandering the streets starving. Wish I'd seen this before but they are getting on pretty well after 2 weeks and generally seem at ease with each other and I actually think that the new cat looks out for my older Tuxedo ❤ You're love for cats exudes 💕🌹
Thanks for the video. I have 1 cat Sami who I trapped last year and now have 2 more I trapped in May and will need to slowly do intros. The new cats have their own rooms right now and get spayed & neutered next week. I am excited to start once they are healed and hormone free.
These are some great tips! I have a friend moving in with me soon and she will bring her cat so it helps to have a process so both cats feel safe while adapting to each other.
This advice was so encouraging to me for my indoor cats. I will attempt this over the winter....for my sake and theirs. I will get the Feliway also. Ahna
I'm having a new female cat over tonight and want to introduce her to my resident cat (a male) , I found this information very helpful! Thanks! Will update you in this~
Hello great tips, but what is the routine for 2 new cats to the home? all videos I find are when 1 is living at the home already..doesn't help me. Thanks,
we have 6 cats. One of the cats we adopted after we moved to Texas 3 years ago. One of the cats, Pearl decided she hated Luke and now they hate each other. I think I need to reintroduce and hope for it to be better. We also recently had a foster fail. 2 bengals. They now live with us and the little girl gives Pearl grief all the time. I'm hoping if I follow your directions of reintroduction, it will be better. I've had cats all my life and have never had so many dominating, territorial cats at once. It's been a bit tough. Right now 2 of our older girls stay in our master bedroom and walk in closet. We have to keep the door locked because Clue, our female bengal has learned to open all the doors. It's a bit exhausting but we love them all so much. Thanks so much for your tips.
So i have a Bengal female thats 10mounth she got castrated and is healing well 13 days done so 1 more to go to be fully healed. New cat is a ragdoll Kitty, also female. The seller insisted that i should not have closed doors and should just have like bars. So i followed her advice even tho i preferred to take it slow. Bengal got curious and approached the gate meowing, the ragdoll was actually hiding but got curious and csme straight to the gate and they locked eyes. Bengal got crazy while the ragdoll was really mellow and showed zero aggression. I have the ragdoll in my room and let the bengal roam freely in the remaining parts of the house. Ragdoll got rly comfy fast and sat in my lap and purred and bonded really fast on arriving day. So i slowly opened the door and have a gate, just to cehck what the bengal is doing. She was laying down on the couch, much calmer, no hissing or growling. Ragdoll approach gate and layed down and purred, they had eye contact. But i did notice that the bengal was shaking at times. Sry for my bad english and text wall, just not sure where to go from here, just start from scratch?
I have a small one bedroom apartment with a small bathroom. There is no way that I can make a quarantine room for a new cat. I want to get a second cat simply because my cat really needs a playmate. Has any one brought a cat home with out the week separation? How did it work out?
I had a female cat that was about 1.5 yrs old and I brought home 2, 3 month old kittens, also female. I had intended to keep the kittens in my master bedroom/bathroom for a week, however after about 3 hours the kittens were crying and wanted out. I opened the door, to go sit with them and they busted out and ran down the hallway to the living room lol. So I watched them and my original older cat followed them around, also watching them. Took a couple hours and then I found them nose touching. No meanness from my older cat. I think she was so happy to have friends! I would recommend getting smaller kittens. I’ve heard usually older cats accept them better. Less threatening. Good luck!
i conducted interviews to find a cat companion. my old cat was in the room when we brought in a carrier with a new cat. different cats on different days. the one cat that came right out of the carrier and laid on her back in front of my cat was hired for the job. i was fortunate in having someone with 19 cats willing to go thru the interview process. Squeeky and Schatzi were great friends for the rest of Squeekys life.
@@pamspurgeon7298 I have been thinking of trying something like that. Petsmart adopts out cats that have been recused from shelters that they adopt out for a fee and allow you a trial period. I am also going to contact a couple of shelters in my city to see if they have the same policy. Thanks for responding and confirming that it is a viable option.
I have used a large wire dog crate for the small room. First covered with a blanket or sheet. The exposure was a little faster than recommended so had to pay extra attention to both cats separately.
Thank you so much i just had my first cat and the resident already here feels treatened. Lots of good tips that reassured me on the situation great video :)
I’m planning on adopting a stray kitten that’s been basically glued to my side. I’m planning to quarantine him from my resident cat while we get his vaccines and other vet stuff. Hopefully they get along, my resident cat was an orphan and had to be bottle fed.
I don't understand how single people with a flat are supposed to follow that advice that's all over the Internet. Or if I need to introduce a kitten to the resident cat. Am I supposed to leave the kitten all alone in the bathroom for hours at a time, or sleep in the bathroom with the kitten and listen to my resident cat banging on the door all night?
@@OlanaMissurawith respect, if your home is that small then it probably isn’t right for you to have two cats living there. Your financial situation isn’t their problem
@@BillyBob-kr9xd your answer seems to correlate the financial situation and the size of the space I inhabit. It's a questionable assumption: I might have a huge space with a single door. And you don't touch on what a single person living by themselves is supposed to do with this advice, restrict themselves to no more than one cat? It's a reasonable enough strategy to get the cats to know each other, I just wish people retelling it all over the place also acknowledged its limitations (instead of what you seem to be doing: telling me I'm not supposed to have cats if I don't fit into the requirements).
@@OlanaMissura If your financial situation were better, you’d live in a bigger space, no? If you don’t have a large enough living space to accommodate the complex social and physical needs of an animal, let alone two animals, then you shouldn’t own them. You are not owed a pet. You should not have pets if you cannot accommodate them. Sorry!
Thank you so much for this video, its the clearer, best video I've found on this topic thus far. I tried to introduce them the fist time ERRONEOUSLY by literally putting them in the same room (because I was ignorant) and although nobody got hurt, it was TERRIFYING. I'll start following this tutorial slowly and update once I get some results 🐈🥰🐱 Also, my male cat is not neutered yet, but my female has already gone through that process. I'll have him undergo the surgery first before beginning this tutorial for better results and consistency.
Thank you for the detailed guide. It's likely we will be getting a companion for our timid 6 year old girl soon and want very much to have both cats become friends.
im at day 5 with my scaredy-cat of 6yo and a kitten. im very curious how your story goes! :D here we are happy but I am getting tired of the amount of work!
@@TruPunx89 Sorry, my wife has not chosen a cat yet. I wish you and your cats well. From what I've read it just takes time and if they don't make friends you may start all over again and make it work.
Heyy @@Geoduck. it goed very well! Last night was our first night with all the doors open and they slept with me amd in the morning we went to the livingroom together haha! One day they will rely less on me i hope! Food luck with your journey with cats! You can always help your wife choose one ;)
Hi! I just adopted an 8 year old cat, and isolated her to my room. She immediately wanted to leave and explore more of the house so I would scent swap and let her explore. The resident cat is 3, and also a female. The problem is, the resident cat is NOT food motivated, so getting her to come to the other side of the sliding door when I feed the adopted cat is tough. We went ahead and had them see each other thru a glass door and hissing and poofing was involved, but eventually when we tried to get them in the same room the staredown happened, and my adopted cat chased the young resident cat. This has been a tough 3 weeks, so any help would be appreciated!
Not food motivated? I heard of those cats. Rare but still. My cat looses her mind when I serve her boiled chicken pieces. Maybe you can try to grab grab a more hearty kind of meat and slow cook it in a dutch oven untill the meat falls from its bone. Still only meat and water. Perhaps the more pungent smell will be of your cats taste. You may also be lucky with intestines from your local butcher. Perhaps your cat only fancies the stuff with a punch. Though, just a thought. Perhaps your cat has a slight food allergy. Maybe you can try a mono proteine food.
A new round of re-introduction has been 1 and half months. However, my old and anxious cat has kept cautious and distance from the new kitten. They are still isolated living in 2 different room. The old and anxious one always lives in a bigger area and has more time to stay with her owners. I am not sure how long this process will take to get to the 3rd step “eye contact”. I am here providing a data point.
@@FF-by6ci it did not work for me in the end. My cats cried loudly when alone in their rooms and after a month I decided to let them free. The old cat is a sensitive kind and would hide under the bed always when friends come by. I think personality matters or the early growth experience. Maybe a longer time period would show difference . I tried 1.5 months.
@@fredlyw1990 Same thing happened,my old cat was actually curious but the new one year old i was fostering would always hiss, i let her go because i had my cat for over 10 yeats.
Currently on the pet gate step, they eat fine together. Yesterday I tried to let them interact a bit more after eating to see how they would get on. It seemed fine and I gave them some treats during that as well but my original cat seems kind of aggressive in body language even though there wasn't hissing and there was a growl once cause I think she went too close to him when he was getting the treat. Technically we have finished this stage but I am really really afraid of introducing them. They are both not very distractible and I know they won't be interested in playing when the other cat is around. Please if anyone has any idea what and how to do things let me know
So my situation is this: I have a 5 year old female Mozie and I just got a new kitten he's about 11-12 weeks now and I've had him for about 2 weeks. I have done all the steps, seperate room, feeding on either side. (the feeding part isn't consistent as my cat isn't a big eater so I put her dry food there right by the door and she grazes when she's hungry (not sure if that's good enough maybe every other day she eats when he eats behind the door). So now it's been almost 2 weeks she has shown "interest" and sits by the door and paws under the door. My kitten is Mr. confidence so I don't see any issues with him, it's her she's super skiddish in general so I guess that doesn't help. Although we did have our boy Smokey and got her as a friend.. there introduction was ok and she really warmed up to him (he unfortunately passed away and she became depressed) so I feel a little discouraged now. but I'm at the point now where we put a screen door up. And she peaks around the corner at him and is very weary of him and does this pounce and scream/meow at the screen. This is the first full day of screen so hoping all goes well.. Any tips to help a scardy cat bond with a confident kitty? She does do better with cats so I know that's not the issue.. Maybe because she's more frightened she will just need more screen time to warm up? Ugh I feel so sad and want them to be besties
What if when you are ready to do supervised time and one cat continuously bolts toward the other cat in a very scary, territorial way? Could you use a harness?
Thank you so much for this excellent video! This information is wonderfully helpful. It's exactly what I needed to know. I'm so happy I've found your channel 😊
Would this work for cats who just visit? A friend and I each have a cat and want to be able to take them to our respective homes where they would be together when we each go on vacation, I guess the question is will they remember each other if we get them properly introduced?
if they had a bad interaction at first, this means that i can't do this 5 steps anymore? or if even they had a bad first interaction this 5 steps can still work? cuz i got a kitten and i have another cat, and a didn't know how to introduce them and the older cat the minute saw the kitten hissed at her, nothing happened but i'm afraid that this first bad interaction will mess up their relationship in the future
I wouldn't worry too much about this "bad" first interaction-a little hiss is nothing that will ruin a relationship. Go ahead and start from the beginning again, and everything should be just fine. :)
Maybe I've been lucky but my new kitten was thrown in at the deep end, and within 2 days both had accepted each other. 2 weeks in and they play fight and chase each other around. Young kitty seems more worried about strange humans than other cats.
Do you have any advice for introducing cats that don’t/won’t live together? I’m hoping my cat and my friends cats will be able to be friends but I haven’t seen any advice specifically for introducing cats that don’t live in the same house. Thanks !!
Do you have a video for bringing a cat home when you DONT already have a cat? I did that. I closed the bathroom and extra bedroom door, but he still had the main bedroom and the living room/kitchen combo room. Our apartment is pretty small. I wish I hadn't tried so hard to feed wet food at the beginning because he barely ate for the first 3 days or so.
These are all purrfect scenarios 😄 what if we don’t have time to prepare? I just brought my 7cats to my parents home and they started fighting for territory so I’m trying to find designated space for each of them which is challenging enough . Now on top of that yesterday someone abandoned a 3week old kitten on our doorstep . Not enough space but couldn’t let die . So I had to move two of my other kittens to the balcony to clear out a room for the baby, now they are all mad and fights increased
I did the opposite of what you said in the video. I threw them in one room and they fought for 3 days. However, on the fourth day, they were sniffing each other and now these two cats cuddle everyday. The only thing I made sure of is that they only get play time if together, they only get treats if together, and lastly they only get food at all if they are together.
@@mindymintzz No they never got injured. I was working from home so I can keep an eye on them and made sure they are okay. I would separate them when it got intense and if they were quiet with each others presence I would reward with treats.
@@thereporter2662 lol I know for most people it won't be good but for kittens, they usually adjust pretty quickly. I even introduced my gf's cats this way. They are best buds too.
you are quite lucky that there was no injuries or stress illness. MANY cats get very serious stress illnesses. that's why your method is not recommended.
Was about to start introducing them, after a week of isolating the street cat in case of spreading diseases. But the shelter group recommends i wait until new cat is vaccinated. Oh well! Also that new cat may be defensive right before and after giving birth. She's a stray found too pregnant to spay. I will foster the kittens until adoption and keep the mom :)
Hey so im trying to move in with my boyfriend nd he has two female sister cats i have a male cat, can we bring the toys to the separate homes or should that be done in the furever home?
Hi Mallory, thank you for all the videos and information you share with us! I recently brought home an eight-month-old kitten. We created a base camp for her, and she settled in pretty quickly, with-in a day or two, she was playing and exploring all parts of the space. I have a three-year-old resident cat we adopted a year ago, and since our kitten's arrival, she has been very curious. We swapped rooms with both cats to get each other's scent. I was trying to follow the steps. However, I went a bit too quick and allowed them to be in the same space together, and my resident cat became defensive and hissed at the kitten. Is it ok to go back to the scent swapping and continue working the steps because just the sight and hissing was a terrible experience for us.
A female cat was left on my street last year just before the cold weather so I too took her in. I didn't know she was pregnant, she had 6 kittens, one died and I gave two away 2. So now I have four cats, mother ,two males and one female. They are all now fixed and get along great. Now one person whom I gave a cat gave me back the cat about a year later, how do I reintroduce the cat back to the four I have without having a cat war.
I just adopted a cat from a shelter. I pick her up in the next couple days. She gets along well with other cats, she was at the shelter in a room with several cats. She actually picked me. LOL Im wondering if it will be a faster integration? My current cat is so sweet and gentle and so is the cat Im adopting.
My 13 year female lived with my male cat all her life. He recently died at 15. They were never best friends but got along. I just adopted a one year old male. He lived in a shelter in a communal enviroment, getting along with the other cats. I have been going through some of the steps on introducing them together. It is going to be a much longer process then I thought. Good Luck.
@@FSD23384 They are doing pretty good. I introduced them quick. A little hissing from my current cat but its more so they just pay no mind to each other right now. They are both around the same age. I think in the coming weeks they will end up besties. Good luck to you too!

how do you create a safe space for the new cat to go to during supervised visits? one cat can easily chase the other up a tree, and if one cat is elevated, the other cat feels understandably threatened. Any suggestions on creating safe escapes?
Thanks for this very helpful video. I'm having difficulty with stage 4. My cat that already lives here, we've recently discovered is deaf and he's such more defensive and vocal than before. Can you give any advice for how best to get them used to dinner dates? Is the door method still a good option? Thanks again 🙏
Update: it was going well (first two weeks) now not so much. Max, who already lives here, is deaf. So, we decided to use more small instances of visual and smell interactions, behind a door at mealtimes. We have been room sharing. The benefit is that when max goes to sleep, he sleeps deep so the new cat can explore the house (we can keep max in a room during that time). We have tried a couple of minutes with them together in the same room, distracted with treats and toys. There have been two accidental incidents where they have come into contact in the hallway. Luckily no fights occurred. Since then, we have kept to feeding behind a slightly open door. But the new cat has lost a lot of confidence and retreats regularly under a bed. Max, is now getting difficult being kept in a room for short periods of time. He howls and this unsettles the new cat. Does anyone have any advice to how we can get them back on track?
thanks for this great video :) I have some questions and hope someone could help. I got a new cat (3y, female) from a freind who can't longer take care of her and my old cat (15y, male) can be a little mean sometimes and i was afraid he would tear her apart lol. But suprisingly, he ignored her at the beginning and reacted amazing to her scent (rubbed against her furr and purred) and after a few days they seemed to be ready to see each other. That went pretty well too, they were pretty calm in the room together, fell asleep and they ate in the same room immediately. But i still followed those steps and didnt let them be alone unsupervised. Everytime they got too close, they would hiss, but both then just turned around and left, no agression. But yesterday my older cat suddenly wanted to slap her out of nowhere and she hissed and growled SO LOUD and he still wanted to slap her, but she hid behind a couch, which my older, fat cat cant fit in. Then my older cat left und i seperated them them for the rest of the day and today. So the thing is, why were they fine with each other at the beginning and now suddelny not anymore? I'm sure i rushed it way too much, its only been 2 weeks, but they really seemed to be ready for all those steps. How do i know if they actually are ready? And also i really can not distract them, if they are in a room, they will just focus on each other, not even treats can distract them and playing with them also doesnt work.
Hmmm...I think they're just feeling that territorial pressure now that they're in the same room. Do you think you can separate them in the same room so they can see one another from closer-up but not make physical contact?
@@AllAboutCatsYT thanks for the answer :) I could only put one of them in a carrier. But i heard that thats not a good solituon. And if i open the door just a tiny bit, the new cat hides at the end of the room, while the old cat tries to force his head through the door. They seem fine, as long as one cat is a little higher up than the other. But as soon as they are on the floor, my old one wants to get colser, and the new one runs away.
This sounds so simple in theory, but my car went into his sanctuary room (my new bedroom) and within a couple hours was trying to escape to go check out the house. And in all the trying to escape, which he has done several times now by jumping over a 5ft board and pushing the door open, he has gotten eye contact with the resident cat. He gets super stressed out being stuck in a room or even part of the house all day. I even tried the site swapping and both cats were more stressed.
Hmmm, any chance you can let the cats spend time in the same room as one another, but supervised? You don't want to control the situation at the cost of over-stressing either cat.
I’ve done all of this. They are fine if separated by a screen. I can hold the younger one and they are fine. But if both are on the floor the older one attacks aggressively. It’s been 7 months. I think I’m going to be forced to regime the new one.
I have a question. I'm 64 and adopted a 9 mo. old cat to my home with my 3 year old. The new cat started scratching everyone including me. She loved being picked up but now scratches me. She scratched a couple people at my home for touching her. My 2 cats run after eachother and do hiss and bat eachother, but nothing bad. Why would she be doing this scratching. The cats have each their own room for now.
My cats always fight after one goes to the vet....I have to bring them together. Its crazy. My father in law has no effing clue how to handle any animals.....he tries to ahove them at eachother and I have had to push him out of the way and away...its unreal. Hes banned from touching my cats indefinitely. They love eachother but it took a while while Turbo was in quarantine when we brought her home.
I just adopted an eight month old cat and my five-year-old cat absolutely hates him and it’s not going so well and I didn’t do this right I’ll put them in separate rooms and I’m hoping things will go well. I’m on day two.
My maincoons 11 months and 2 mts no hissing or crouching. The olderr cat even grooms the younger one. How do i know when play is too rough and step in. Now, if the little one cries the older one doesn't yeild i separate. Help
My question is, I just let them eat between the cat gate and door open. Do I just leave them now with the cat gate, or close the door when they’re not eating? Help!

I think they'd welcome the meat, maybe even the cheese, and some good water, catnip tea, low lactose milk, and low sodium broth for drinks.
That Gandhi reference was awesome. Gandhi did indeed groom many young children :)

Should have listened to her in the first place 😬
Its not this hard. I have had cats for over 30 years. Take them with me to friends houses with other animals. As long as your cat trusts you then its easy. If the cat dont trust you 100% then its hard to meet other animals for a cat.

Yes!! Now I know better.
I adopted two kittens together and now at one years old they don't get along anymore and i do not know what to do anymore🫠
Great tip! Thanks for sharing!
Let me know if all it did was make your resident cat want to eat the kitten. Lol@@katherinestojanovski6734
How long did it take you Paige? I’m struggling at the moment, it’s been 3 weeks. Am I being inpatient? 🫣
Everyone says it 'takes time' but nobody ever gives you a time reference. Paige, how long did it take for your cat family to settle down?
I'm also curious about the timeline? With all of this I'm starting to think 2 cats aren't meant to be in the same apartment :/ if in the end the scenario to be looking for is them to tolerate each other :/ I want to get another cat so my resident cat wont be so lonely....on the other hand, maybe shes better off alone?..
I think from start to finish it was about 3 months.
I needed to read this comment. Time is definitely your friend
Now we need the video of introducing 5 cats in only 2 steps
5 steps are fine. but we have a problem. 2 cats brother and sister (3 years old) and husky (9 year old) and we just found a kitten next to our house. Around 6 months old, belly is shaved (after being spayed), not chipped. And I am slowly trying to get them acclimated to one another. 3rd day, girl cat is super upset, hissing and growling, boy cat today did a nose kiss to a kitten but the kitten hissed. husky doesn't care, she just wants to come closer and sniff and the kitten is terrified of a big, scary thing. we are trying to locate the owner with no luck so far.
lol perfect example of when the cat is ready to leave, your actor is clearly ready to get out of the bathroom and back to the rest of the house
Thank you.
Dude, I wanna know the rest of your story!! What a beautiful human you are!!!🥰

How did it go in the end?
Yeah update pls!
Yes a slow transition is key. I didn’t know that when I brought my new kitty home but they are both pretty good now together♥️💜
Hello kubi
How long has it taken for them to meet? I'm introducing a small cat to my old cat but its the new cat that's making this scary sound.
So glad that you are providing a home for the stray kitten. I hope it all goes well.
Thanks!

Omg samee!😂
I’m worried I’ve unintentionally messed things up & won’t be able to salvage things
omigosh Forest being chatty in the beginning was so cute, thanks for including that! And ofc demonstrating all the steps thoroughly :)
I just got a 10 month for my 1 yr old to play with and this was very informative. You are smart and beautiful. Thanks.

Bengal cats tend to be dominant and territorial.
I would reach out to Jackson Galaxy on his channel

Yup, same. 😂 I mean seriously, not everyone lives in a typical or large home with like 4-5 bedrooms with an upstairs and a downstairs. 🤦♀️
How is it going? are they together?
@@FF-by6ci it did not work for me in the end. My cats cried loudly when alone in their rooms and after a month I decided to let them free.
The old cat is a sensitive kind and would hide under the bed always when friends come by. I think personality matters or the early growth experience. Maybe a longer time period would show difference . I tried 1.5 months.
@@fredlyw1990 Same thing happened,my old cat was actually curious but the new one year old i was fostering would always hiss, i let her go because i had my cat for over 10 yeats.
@@fredlyw1990 let them free? Outside?
@@Virgolove Do you mean letting them go outside together would help build the relationship?
Heck yea!!!! Great to see ya again :)
You too, Chum! Feels like it's been a long time. :)
Thank you very much. You explain everything so well. :)
Please if anyone has any idea what and how to do things let me know
Any updates?
update please? how are they now?
I’m having the same issue, any update?
The earrings, the watch....ohmygod you are so cool!
Wessie, Forest, its time for role-playing kitties!
So my situation is this:
I have a 5 year old female Mozie and I just got a new kitten he's about 11-12 weeks now and I've had him for about 2 weeks.
@@AllAboutCatsYT oh okay! I hope so!! thank you sm for the help ❤
Hi! That's a good request. We do have an article on the subject here: cats.com/how-to-make-a-new-cat-feel-at-home
The only thing I made sure of is that they only get play time if together, they only get treats if together, and lastly they only get food at all if they are together.
did they get injured somehow? or when they fought did they make really agrassive attacks? i wanna do it too but im scared :(
@@mindymintzz No they never got injured.
@@thereporter2662 damn I hate it when the babies don't get along. I hope everything goes smoothly for you soon.
you are quite lucky that there was no injuries or stress illness.
Please nd thankyou in advance 🙏🏻
Whoa! Just a coincidence! I just adopted a kitten this weekend and I'm starting the introduction process now
A female cat was left on my street last year just before the cold weather so I too took her in.
I got lucky but I have also got unlucky interducing two cats together. Im doing it again tomorrow so Im gulping in on tips. Its a little dificult cause I dont live alone now and I have to work so im crossing my fingers
hi a month ago my wife and i got a 3 month old female kitten, for our 2 year old female to have a companion ,last spring we had to put our older male cat down to heath problems.we thought it would be good for our resident cat she got along great with the older cat. This new kitten is so sweet but, willow has attacked her multiple times ive done all the steps getting very frustrated we have grown very fond of the new cat and i dont want to have to find another home for her , any advice would be great ive commented on other Yt videos but no feedback thanks Mark 😀 just subbed and liked ✌
how do you create a safe space for the new cat to go to during supervised visits? one cat can easily chase the other up a tree, and if one cat is elevated, the other cat feels understandably threatened. Any suggestions on creating safe escapes?
Where’d you get your cat pillow in the background? 😍 it looks like my precious cat!

I love this chick and her channel
thanks for this great video :) I have some questions and hope someone could help.

Turbo is an awesome name!!
Very helpful! Thanks for sharing this.

I just adopted an eight month old cat and my five-year-old cat absolutely hates him and it’s not going so well and I didn’t do this right I’ll put them in separate rooms and I’m hoping things will go well. I’m on day two.
You may want to try the feloway diffusers. They can help, along with the methods used in this video, of course!
How do you separate the cats if they start to fight?
My maincoons 11 months and 2 mts no hissing or crouching. The olderr cat even grooms the younger one. How do i know when play is too rough and step in. Now, if the little one cries the older one doesn't yeild i separate. Help
My question is, I just let them eat between the cat gate and door open. Do I just leave them now with the cat gate, or close the door when they’re not eating? Help!
What can we do when we've followed all the instructions properly and after seven months it just doesn't get any better between two cats? ...
