INTRODUCING TWO CATS - Smoothie meeting Milkshake

- This is a video about introducing two cats, one adult cat (Smoothie) & a new kitten (Milkshake). Both are British Longhair cats, Smoothie is from 2014, Milkshake from 2016.
Here are some extra tips:
* Be patient, it's a slow process. First impressions are important & difficult to erase for cats.
* Don't force anything. The cats'll let you know when they're ready. It's never a good idea to just put them together & let them fight it out. Cats usually don't like change, so let them get used to the new situation. Give them separate rooms for at least the first few days.
* Before you'll let your cats meet, let them get used to the smell of one another. Cats are all about scents. For example you can pet one cat with a sock & let the other cat smell this sock afterwards. It's also wise to let them know it's a positive door, by giving them treats after smelling the sock. It has to be a positive experience.
* When your cats meet for the first time - under supervision of course - play with both of them to show there's no danger. You can also try to let them eat next to each other.
* A bit hissing or growling is fine, but don't let them get negative associations with meeting one another. If they'll start to fight, just separate them. When they're calm again you can bring them back together. Continue doing this till they're visibly more relaxed.

when i was younger we got my second cat when she was a kitten and didn't do any of this XD they where chill from day one. The only problem we had was that my first cat kept eating the second ones food
The issue with that "proper introduction" is that it probably took more than half a year. My kitten constantly runs up to the older cats. Because he wants their attention. He has no fears. But it just takes cats forever to get use to each other. They still don't really like each other. But all three of them will lay next to each other now. He likes to get into a lot of trouble, so he was called "Wicked."
Heck, this one adult cat I have, that is going into being a senior I suppose, she is very shy. She likes me the most. More than anyone else. And she will lay with me when she wants to. She'll make these chirps instead of meows (her entire life was chirping in communication) [just now learning to meow]. And for a month I guess, the kitten learn to chirp like her.
My other cat, probably the oldest and would be considered the Alpha Male, he steals the food from the female cat. We keep the kitten in a separate room because he wants to follow the cats outside. But the kitten wants to follow the two. The kitten is scared of lots of unique sounds even though he hears them all the time.
The alpha cat was originally jealous. Would spray around the house even though he was neutered. But has stopped for a while now after getting use to the kitten.
Its a complicated cat life. The outside/indoor cats sleep out in the sun and come in for food. And a little leisure time. Always an interesting day from them all.
OMG, Smoothie is so beautiful with the green eyes. Precious cats! Glad they became good friends, now they have each other to play and snuggle with. 💞

I have never seen a cat with beautiful green eyes like that before.
British Longhairs often have large, expressive eyes. Though it's likely that the eyes just look bigger because the rest of their face is quite scrunched up.
You should see russian blue hair cats. They have extrem green eyes :) .

'That did not go well' you said. Actually it did. Little one came close, big one said 'that's close enough for now, I don't want you near me, yet. I need more time.' Little lady said 'sure thing' and backed off. If one is not ready for the other to come close, you want exactly that to happen. One tells the other where the 'personal space' border is, and the other one listens to it and backs off a bit.
Interviewer: So how did you two become friends?
Smoothie: Well, Milkshake invaded my home, so naturally I began to plot his murder. During my scheming, however, I found myself intrigued by him. Nevertheless, I persisted, and was about to carry out Operation Milkshake Massacre, when lo and behold, I was charmed and couldn't help but to indulge (in) Milkshake. All it took was a sniff for me to realize that I found a friend for life.
Interviewer: Aww, that's such a sweet story...

Cats are so funny and dramatic just like humans.
I find that if you want to introduce a new cat to an existing one taking your time and getting them comfortable with each others smell is very beneficial.
Also from past experience having two non competitive personalities helps too. For instance you could have one cat that's a hunter and one that's lazy... but if you introduce 2 hunters or 2 lazy cats there can be competition for space which is not what you want.
Also some cats like hiding beneath objects while others are climbers and so getting a few cat terrain pieces that match there personality can also help diffuse tension.

Meg Jewelz I completely agree. I have worked in an animal hospital for over 2 years, own three cats and currently am a doggie daycare attendant. This is a perfect way to introduce cats to each other.
I'm currently working on introducing two cats. My friend's mom is a vet tech at a clinic who specializes in cats so she's been helping me with ideas. The new cat is a little older than the first cat we got. But the younger one is the one with issues. We have them separated obviously and sniffing from under the door. My friend's mom told me to leave one in a room and the other wonder around then alternate them so the other is in a room. And the other gets to wonder and get use to the scent of the other cat without being face to face. It's only been two days. I know these things take time but on average how long will it take until my first kitty stops hissing? She's hasn't been around other cats in about 7 months. And the last time she was it was with her litter mates.
Hannah Nahnah this really depends on each individual cat. Wait for the hissing to stop. Keep on alternating them between their designated rooms, it can take close to two weeks until they are used to each other’s scent, maybe more, maybe less. Once they seem completely comfortable and at home, you can introduce a baby gate so they can see each other. It will take another 2 weeks or so to become comfortable seeing each other. But again, every cat is different. When you feel both cats are relaxed and at ease with each other, it’s time to move on to the next step.

What a VERY educational & heartwarming video...Thank you for sharing & showing the importance of not "rushing" the intros...I have a shorthaired Persian, who for 9 yr's had been nothing but affectionate, gentle & sweet, so we thought (incorrectly) he'd very easily become friends with the new, equally sweet & quiet boy (both neutered 7-year-olds)...
It was so stressful for the longest time because it turns out the Persian was "extremely" jealous of his new brother who was so docile himself...Thankfully, they never engaged their claws during battles but screamed at the top of their lungs while slapping each other around for months...Two years later, there's no mutual love, grooming, or play of any kind, but at least they now tolerate" each other...most days... *: )*

I used to volunteer for adoptions at a rescue, and this is everything we told the new adopters that already had a cat. We would also tell them to pet each cat with a sock on their hand and then give the sock to the other cat and vice-versa. Perfect introduction and parenting for the best result👏👏👏

I have a cat. She's used to be alone... We thought to bring home another cat...(Both of them are females) We closed the door for 5 or 6 hours and then opened it but the introduction did NOT Go well at all. They both hissed at each other every time they saw each other. I'm gonna start over the introduction again by putting them in separate rooms and hoping for the best...

I watch videos like this all the time. I just don't get why there are so many dislikes. What's not to like?. These cats are gorgeous.
In track, what's to dislike is the stupidity of a gate, of keeping them seperate, like wow, this guy reminds me of Paul on 90 day fiance. He wore a vest with ice cubes in it to keep cool. He was worried about everything, he was like a total spaz. But I didn't press dislike because the cats are beautiful. They can't help if their owner is weird. I'm just giving my opinion on how freaking stupid doing that was but even worse, he filmed it 😬
@@redpilled4781 actually the fence thing isnt that bad of an idea, when bringing 2 cats together. letting them smell and see each other gives them the opportunity to get to know each other without them fighting real hard. It really depends on the cats but I had seen my shares of instant meet up ending in a bloody fight with one so scared it took month to get them along, which could perhaps be avoided otherwise - it also provides each cat a save space, a territory where you dont have to fear the "intruder" will annoy you, which makes it easier for those cats too.
Red Pilled I can say from experience that cats won’t get friends if you just put them in the house and let them figure it out xD so it’s actually a pretty good idea I’ll try in the future. And why not film it, it’s a great process video and super cute :)

I like how the people realised that 2 pets may not like each other and slowly introduced them one another. I've seen videos here where 2 pets were in highly toxic and violent relationship and people thinking they are cute. Especially with a cat and dog.

They are CATS not a cat and a dog, which I can see gradually introducing to each other over the course of a half hour. This is too much. But the poor guy probably has OCD. This was painful for me to watch. Major control issues going on In sensing.

@@redpilled4781 It can take up to 2 weeks for the cats. It really depends on their characters and age. usually you only want to take the next step only when they are already reallly used to the current one, else you open the gate and end up in a pretty bad fight reversing everything you did beforehand. Perhaps he could have gone through the procedure faster with those 2, but taking the time is never the wrong choice there.
