Ninja Blade was the last game FromSoftware developed before their big hit Demon's Souls. This game is a mess, but it's a mess in some pretty entertaining ways that you'd never expect from the company these days.

Fromsoftware releasing this game and demon's souls at the same time: "I'm playing on both sides so I always come out on top"
I do actually wonder if they had to release this super overly-safe template game so that Microsoft would let them spend all the money on making the far more innovative and "riskier" Demon's Souls.
Devin Mann but demon souls is PlayStation exclusive so Microsoft had nothing to do with it. Maybe Sony took demon souls whilst ms took ninja blade as the “safe bet” or something like that.

Demon's souls was an assumed failure before it even came out, so how can you say that?

Relation (connection) between this game by FromSoftware and games set in Team Ninja's Dead or Alive universe:
* The title and the ninja theme is similar to the 2004 Xbox title Ninja Gaiden and its more well-known updated Black version.
* Ken Ogawa is similar to Ninja Gaiden Black's protagonist Ryu Hayabusa, except Ken lacks his mouth mask and had sleeves on his arms.
* The enemies can be similar to the fiends from Ninja Gaiden Black, but in this one, enemies are originally humans but mutated caused by the Alpha-worm virus.
* The gameplay is similar Ninja Gaiden Black, but this game had quicktime events in addition to hack and slash.
* The music is almost similar to Ninja Gaiden Black.
* The infected schoolgirl in the opening cinematic looks similar to Honoka in her School Girl Strikers DLC normal costume in Dead or Alive 5: Last Round, except in DOA5:LR, she had pink hair with a headband and a different color on her plaid skirt.
* Both games ran on the Xbox consoles (this game ran on the Xbox 360 while Ninja Gaiden Black ran on the original Xbox).

@@AustinPrice184 Yea, even that whole Moonlight Greatsword sequence screams Devil May Cry.
@David Assébof No sir, three out of just over a million games. Narrow it down to console/pc games, 3d games, action games, etc and that pool is much smaller. Most definitely not millions. We're probably talking in roughly the range of 50,000 games at the most. And honestly, how many action games have you played in your life? maybe a few hundred at most if you're really big on it? Because for me looking at dark souls, zeldas, marios, metroids, DMCs, skyrim, spongebob, nier, and tons of other stuff I cant think of off the top of my head maybe 3 of 160 for me personally? so roughly 2%? That not a small number anymore.
Miyazaki was so impressed by that spider he used it twice bro.
What really blows my mind about this game is that they thought that it would be the successful game instead of Demon Souls
Let me make it clear, they had more faith in the QTE SIMULATOR *NINJA BLADE* than *DEMON SOULS*
Because back then who wouldn't? It's the same formula as God of War, with a bit of Ninja Gaiden. On hindsight it should be almost foolproof. Nobody wanted to bang their head with over 40 tries trying to complete 1st and 2nd bosses.
They probably think: "At best it'll turned into a franchise, at worst it'll be passable but still make money". Unbeknownst to them, it's a lot worse than that
That time we already had Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, Dante's Inferno and God Of War. It's not doubt they overpowered Ninja Blade, that's why only few people know it.
@@ShatteredGlass916 they at least could’ve had a little more faith in the game that did something different though. Did they never consider that maybe that formula was getting old?
@@Anonymous-73 nope, that's what i'm trying to say. In that time maybe they thought the could get away with just copying what's big. The Demon Soul concept are probably secondary to them because they probably deemed it less safe of a product compared to just copying GoW's QTE and NG's ninja setting
Consider the success of the Horizon series. I don't think there's anything fundamentally new or innovative with those games (at the time of their release), and yet they are quite successful nonetheless. Producing it turned out to be a very successful bet because all of its ideas are 'safe' and not out of the box (except for the 'robots are animals' design concept, which is pretty original)
Honestly I loved ninja blade. I found it as a great one time play through game. Probably because I had an Xbox and not a PlayStation haha

The craziest thing is that the Moonlight greatsword location is the exact same as Kings Field 4. The roots and everything!
I consider Ninja Blade a proto-Asura's Wrath. Sure, the QTEs were excessive in a time when QTEs were reviled but they do seem intended as a large and equal part of the gameplay and the game does warn you that a QTE sequence is coming up with that eye focus scene. Plus IIRC the button prompts were usually fairly logical. I think it's kinda the opposite of RE4's QTEs which were designed to keep the horror tension up during cutscenes since you could be prompted to hit a button combo at any time (and the buttons were randomized to make it meaner).

I know I’m a little late to the video, but a while before the Soulsborne games, Fromsoft made the Armored Core series! Though both games are incredibly different, both are very difficult and reward adaptability. Maybe worth checking out? It’s been about a decade since they made an Armored Core game so with the announcement of Armored Core 6 to drop next year now is a perfect time!
@Ghost In The Shade tbf the videos not really about armored core
@Ghost In The Shade I mean, armored core didn't really have anything to do with this? He's talking about what he thinks is fromsoft's worst game, and armored core is not bad. And as far as "setting fromsoft on the mainstream", then as much as armored core games were good they weren't really part of that at all. That absolutely started with demon souls since its success is the reason Miyazaki was given so much power and the soulsborne games started being made, which is inarguably what boomed fromsoft's popularity.
@Ghost In The Shade He didn't list any games though? He just said "they were releasing games nonstop for 15 years" and "none of them REALLY caught on" (referring to mainstream appeal), yeah?
@@jacobnorris8256 From Software made thirteen. I repeat THIRTEEN armored core games before settling on making demon's souls. Pretty sure that means it caught on. Otherwise why would from soft make so many.
@@MrTekhnical There's a big difference between catching enough attention to be a consistently profitable mid-budget game series, and catching the mainstream attention of the entire world.
Started checking for From Software after Tenchu. Glad you mentioned quick time events. There's a way to "passively" implement QTE, like in RE, where you want to pay attention to the dialogue, to avoid an unexpected attack/instakill. Or landing key blows/maneuvering here and there. Love that type of engagement. Otherwise... it's "fluff". As much as 'im (I) love Asura's Wrath's Concept/Design/Art/Etc., 'im would probably never play it. Thanks for your take on this creation from From. 😊👍🏽
They never made a Tenchu game though, merely published them. Not from the start either, I think the first Tenchu game they published was in like 2004.
Fun fact: the special agent in this game is the father of President Michael Wilson in Metal Wolf Chaos
They're all in connected in some way? My God, maybe he's in Souls series as well? Hidden somewhere in the game, we just gotta find him.
If all games made by fromsoft are somehow in the same universe/worle I wouldn't even be surprised
RIIIIICHARDDDD
You mean the metalninjasekisoulsbourne universe?
LET'S PARTYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Xbox 360 2009: Ninja Blade
PlayStation 3 2009: Demon’s Souls
Xbox really got the short end of the stick on that one
Yeah, they should have just asked for a third Otogi game for 360 over this turd. The first two otogi's were amazing and still remain my favorite original xbox games.
Business as usual.
on THAT one? it‘s been like that ever since! i really have no idea why anyone would choose an xbox over a playstation. there are no exclusive gems whatsoever.
Series X should be launching with Ninja Blade Remastered 😂
@@finalfantasy84 keep saying that and they'll buy more :p
This "defensive phase -> attacking phase" boss design? Well... honestly, it's part of why I don't like Elden Ring bosses. In that game, From leaned so _hard_ into making you dodge absolute combo and AoE _barrages_ to then take an opening to quickly smack them a few times. Like - really, it's _basically_ that exact type of design. I really don't like it.
This game actually put me off From Software for 12 years. When it came out I was managing a video game store while finishing my degree and played it. And absolutely despised it. I hadn’t played a single one til Elden Ring.
I liked this game when I was a kid, I even 100% it, getting that "moonlight sword" with no context in a room that looked way out of place in the game was very puzzling back then, now that I found this channel I finally know where it came from, my teen self must be happy.
That one sword is probably the only true weapon that clearly marks all the Souls Games.
Yeah I liked this game as a kid too. Never knew it was FromSoftware though and watching this video made me realise how my memories were a lie.
I enjoyed the game too weirdly enough to beat it and the QTEs didn't bother me at all. not sure how Ill like it now though. I died alot too ahh the beginnings of dying over and over again.
@@dramalexi actually its in almost every From game, its OP as heck in the Armoured Core series
@@MsXmaster666 thats what he said. You are agreeing with him.
Man you grabbed my attention when you did the funny explosion. Peak editing, good shit my guy
I love how the ground in that final clip is just a jpeg of arial footage from google maps or something.
I had DMC vibes from that moonlight greatsword cutscene, but in a very awkward way.
You know how every time Dante in DMC acquires a new weapon, there's a cutscene where he demonstrates what it can do in a very stylish way? Well, he generally does that in two types of cutscenes.
The first type is when he slays a bunch of enemies that come out of nowhere displaying what the weapon can actually do, while being Dante (careless, cool and hellishly stylish).
The second type is when he does some wacky cool moves that represent the FEEL and MOOD of the weapon (I'm looking at you, Dr. Faust, Nevan, and Gilgamesh), rather than actual moves.
Well, this was neither.
I swear to god, if the moonlight greatsword cutscene had enemies in it, it would be actually pretty good!
And without them it just feels wacky and awkward... He stylishly cuts a bunch of... Roots?
Don't get me wrong, Dante in DMC 4 often does the same thing with the big black obelisks, but when he does it, he doesn't even pretend to be serious, he does all kinds of "WOHOO"s and wears a grin during all of it, so you can tell he's just having a BLAST.
This cutscene is just trying to be too serious while in actuality being way too wacky for itself, which makes it awkward.
Exactly. The moonlight greatsword cutscene has that same energy as whenever Dante gets a new weapon in Devil May Cry. But with Ninja Blade's general tone, plus the fact that he shows off the sword's power by....cutting some tree roots, it just feels super off this game.
No joke right.
DMC?
@@beanieguitarguy4070 Devil May cry. :3
For anyone who's interested, I recommend watching Matt McMuscles' "Demon's Souls - What Happened?", which explains a lot of what was going on in FromSoft when Demon's Souls and Ninja Blade were being developed, and how it's basically a miracle that Demon's Souls even exists.
tbh seeing not ryu chopping the great hollow to pieces with the MLGS is pretty satisfying
Why does no one ever discuss 'Enchanted Arms'? It's a flawed, but unique JRPG. It has some great ideas executed well (collecting golems to fight by your side, the grid battle system, a casino to gain extra experience to break the game, and each player character gets their own Moonlight weapon from the optional dungeon) and entertaining characters, however the most jarring aspect for me were the empty fields - oh, and the shrill voice acting on that damn kid Yuki. With some tweaks it could have been so memorable and the beginnings of a new franchise.
The guy in the game: throws the motorcycle
Dante: *smiles*
"How many games can you ride a motorcycle up the side of a building? "
**DMC 3 has entered the chat**
This game really wants to be dmc
Bnayonetta
12:23 this is probably the funniest shit i've ever seen. It legit took my complete surprise. Not only is it completely out of place, but its uncharacteristically uncanny.
I'm dying inside that the iconic Ludwig pose with the Moonlight Greatsword is in this game at 12:37 lmfaooo
3:12 legit the greatest quick time event
Lmao so many great stuff going on there, but the timing of the entire scene is pure gold
I honestly have to believe that was done purposely. The editing is so tight and funny

Is it real? LOL I don’t even know what it’s from if it is.
I like how at 0:18 you showed intense highlights from bloodborne and sekiro, but for dark souls you just showed the player standing in front of firelink shrine. Which is exactly what I think of when I think of dark souls for some reason.
haha that was actually totally unintentional
@@IronPineapple dang, I thought I was an intellectual for a sec.
Yo, is that sword at the dad fight at the end the same as Rivers of Blood in Elden Ring?
You might be the first person in about 15 years to think about That's So Raven.
12:10 Fun Fact. The area where you get the Moonlight Sword in Ninja Blade is a nearly identical to the one where you get it in King's Field IV: The Ancient City on PS2.
The only difference being in King's Field 4 the area is more ruined and light is shining through.
I guess by this From Software is basically telling us that King's Field is truly dead and will never return. :'(
I watched this video now, after seeing Pineapple's videos on both King's Field games and let me tell you I was stunned when I saw that lol.
and the Moonlight Greatsword is in Elden Ring as well.
I kinda wish we were in the 5th possible dimension where both games were great and we got both as fantastic franchises. Cause I kinda wish we actually got a good game outta this cause a blood pumping character action game from fromsoft sounds great.
11:45 - Best part of the credits? The song that plays while the singer struggles to breathe.

6:15 Thats the problem I had with the butterfly boss from ds1, my melee focused build just had to run around and wait for it to perch to get in a few hits. Ended up feeling really slow and not very exciting.
You actually don't have to. Firebombs dealt good damage to the moonlight butterfly and even better damage using black firebombs. Its what I did in my first playthrough and did it in every subsequent melee playthrough of ds1
Demon souls: "THE game that put Fromsoft on the map... "
Armored Core Series: Motha F#cka WHAT?!
"mainstream" is the key word for that part, don't think armored core ever truly got popular enough for that
@@IronPineapple Sadly you are right.
Tenchu was also hugely popular back in the PS2 days.
@@IronPineapple that's arguable. For Answer is the best customizable mecha game _to date,_ and the whole IP got at least AA class following.
If you compare it to the Souls series, sure. But ignoring Armored Core's existence while calling yourself "a fan of Fromsoft" kinda feels weird. Sounds more like you're just a fan of their fantasy games.
@@ryanjoseph9335 I played some of the Tenchu(s) but I didnt remember were From Software games.
Watching this, very painfully I might add...I get the feeling like this game is the deep bargain bin version of Bayonetta, which also came out in 2009 and does quick time events, button mashing combos and cut scenes into boss battle much, much better.
Yea i got Bayonetta vibes too. Platinum Games vibes from the ps3/360 era really. That game feels great to play though
No one mentioned that Demon's Soul was released only in NA and JP, lucky enough at that time I had an insane game shop dealer that had all games you couldn't find, when he proposed me DS (on ps3) I was thinking of another open world rpg, yeha nice I'm in, turned out to be one of the best game I ever played(NG+5) and fused my old ps3, I had to buy a new one lol
I actually bought this game on release and kinda enjoyed it because I was looking for anything similar to Ninja Gaiden 2 (one of my favorites of all time)
Same
Yup, it's actually good game and qte while annoying were flashy and cool as hell.
@@wykydytron good is a huge stretch. It happened
I had it too, but it really wasn't good. I also bought it for the same reason as you (I loved Ninja Gaiden 2) but it was nowhere even close.
You could get a few hours of fun out of it but really wasn't great.
@@B20C0 a game doesn't have to fit within arbitrary rules in order to enjoy it and classify it as personally good. By your logic, DS3 sucks because I found it frustrating after 100%ing 1 and 2.

At least Asura's Wrath does it right

7:29 imagine being a ninja, trained to be a killer machine, the ultimate warrior, and your best outfit is clown.
Armored Core was actually kinda big back in the day. I really want them to go back to that at some point.
Yeah me to also if from soft could make another bloodborne or otoagi or metal wolf chaos that would also be cool i mean dark souls is cool and everything. Its just not really my thing.
But the true boss of any company is money ........if soulsborne is so profitable .......why will they bother going back
@@rahulverma8774 yeah unfortunatly , from soft is kind of like most publishers in that regard. Same reason ubisoft won't make another pop or splinter cell.
@@brendanpelkey120 I dont think we should compare FromSoft with ubisoft ........... ubisoft is so greedy tht they rarely do any worthy changes in gameplay whenever they introduce sequels .......... but FromSoft studies its consumers and giv them wht they want .....they take time in making games which makes their games better .......... but we all can agree tht both companies dont like taking risks
Well, I heard something like Armored Core 6 was supposed to release in either 2020 or 2021, so there's that.
