As an instructor I can say this is one of the best youtube tutorials for improving intermediate riding. Some of these drills are exactly what you would practice in lessons with an instructor critiquing you! I actually use a flexible fiberglass stick for beginner riders to initiate turns with and to improve balance. The 3 hop unhill on heel edge and 3 hop downhill on toe edge is new to me but going to be a future favorite for warming up myself and clients, this might be the best tip in the video for improving the stutter stops described and shown.

I agree, I teach to beginners one week each winter during school camps, this will help me with kids that have a more advanced level but still some technical issues that need fixing. Thanks for the video.

Same here as an instructor some of these drills will be really usefull. Really liked this video and even got me thinking if I am doing everything as I should be doing. Always space for improvement.

I think the main reason people counter rotate is because they want to keep looking down the slope at all times, so looking left or right while turning doesn't feel very natural at first. But that's how it's done!!! Great video.

I've been riding for about 18 years, and I'm generally comfortable up to double black runs. I watched your video and saw my own habits in the counter-rotating section, especially when the run gets steep. I never really felt comfortable on my toe edge on steep runs, and only went there briefly before retreating to the safety of my heel edge. Today I put two and two together after watching your video and I tried committing to turning my hips around when on my toe edge. All of a sudden I have much more control and I'm having way more fun. Thank you! That was exactly what I needed.

Isa Dee why do people automatically assume people on he internet are right because they have a fancy video😂 using your hips to turn is for breaking and turning hard. They are two completely different types of turns.

Listen, there are 2 different types of information on the internet. 1: strange unclear conspiracies about the flat earth or something and 2: video’s like this, telling you some things you might or might not know. In this case I believe it’s true because I’ve been trying it and figured out that it really works. Don’t just throw a ‘why do people believe everything what’s on the internet’
      no offence.

    • @Elm98

Isa Dee that made no sense. Of course it worked because like I said they are two different type of turns lol. I said why do you believe it because I have the evidence of you believing it right there? I’m confused what youre getting at

I find this kind of video more thrilling than those "GO BIG" GoPro videos or pro videos, because its very relatable and honestly the joy of snowboarding for the average rider is connecting with the board on the slopes. It's a feeling of control and enjoying the mountain that makes snowboard so fun! And the progression comes not in doing massive tricks or having the coolest run, but in mastering each step. Most people can get into snowboarding if they learn these basics!

Worked great on about 6"-8" of average snow starts to struggle a bit past 8". ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxoHYZbq5g9fkcAtinlTqstNlje-UQkCHN Very light weight and the chute spin control works well. For the low price you get a ton of value. My only complaint is managing the cord as it does take a fair bit of effort to watch and pull the cord out of the way. I found myself having to whip the cord out of the way a lot when I needed to make one way passes to mange the blow direction. It's less of an issue when you can work both directions. A battery powered version would be a lot easier to handle but that is also double the price and requires battery care. I chose the corded version so I didn't have to worry about batteries but I do now see how much work the cord is. I let my neighbor borrow it and it outperformed his smaller gas blower, he was totally sold. Very pleased with the power and operations. My only suggestion is to spend a bit more on a cordless version if you have budget for it. The cord is a bit more of a headache than I thought it would be. Very pleased with the Snow Joe brand and quality.

My girl and I watched this video and your tips have reignited our love for snowboarding. We were stuck and not getting any better. 2 weeks ago, we went on a Monday and had the slopes to ourselves... We practiced the drills and (literally) re-learned how to distribute our weight, make turns, ride our edges, etc. After two days on the slopes, we both ride smoother, more confidently, and faster.
The other fun thing to do now is watch other people riding and see how 90% of snowboarders do it wrong. Counter-rotation and uncentered hips being the biggest mistakes.

I love how this video shows both the correct and incorrect way of each of these exercises. The problem with a lot of snowboarding tutorials is they tell you the correct way of doing something, but don’t explain what you could be doing wrong in the first place so you don’t exactly know what it is you need to fix. This video explained everything perfectly and I can’t wait to take this advice to the slopes!

  • @mkrpata

I've really got to thank you for this video. I just got back out on the slopes for the first time in seven years, after suffering a pretty bad injury. I watched this video several times before going back out -- practiced the stance as shown around 3:50, adjusted my bindings for more forward lean, and visualized rotating my whole body through turns. (When I broke my arm, I was definitely counter-rotating on a toe-side turn. Caught the heel edge, and boom.) Well, my return to the slopes was fantastic. I felt confident and in control through my turns, and also able to identify some problems with my technique and address them as they were happening. I have a lot more to learn and a lot of practice to do, but this was exactly what I needed to get back on the right foot.

Filming my riding was a great suggestion. I immediately saw the disconnect between my upper and lower body and the tendency to straight leg my heel side turns that lead to at least once a run splatting on my bum after I chattered out in the middle of the turn. This video advanced my intermediate riding more than any ten that I've watched or, sadly, the three disinterested snowboard instructors that I had private lessons with. Grab a buddy, grab your camera, go play. Debrief at the end of the day and have fun. Thanks for the video! Cheers!

Amazing tips, thanks guys!! Just got back from a 2 hour practice session at an indoor slope and these tips have honestly transformed my riding. During my last 2 sessions, I've struggled with my toe turns and seen little to no improvement. From the video I could identify that I've been counter rotating, leaning over, sticking my bum out and forcing the tail of my board round in a kind of jerking motion. Today, my turns were flowing and buttery smooth, by keeping my hips forward and steering using the 'invisible pole' through my hips. By far the most helpful video on UA-cam, thanks so much guys!

    my 5cents on counter rotation:
I used to be an intermediate rider but 13 whole years of absence from the sport throwed me back on bad habits and counter rotation is one of them.
Paying attention to my riding, I noticed I counter rotate mainly on steeper sections and this is for two main reasons: insecure breaking and not leaning enough on to the turn which is compensated by kicking my back foot outwards with the help of my hands. Having tried the "grab your pants" trick made me lean way more and corner more smoothly, which is when the "aha!" moment happened.

The tip to hold your pants to help keep your body aligned during turns was one of the single most helpful tips I've ever gotten for boarding. I also envisioned holding the pole and that helped. I've been snowboarding for years but only a few days a season and I was stuck in between beginner and intermediate, since I had such a hard time switching to a toe side turn on steeper terrain or at speed. THANKS. I plan to watch this before each outing and hope to try the hopping drill next time out.

One thing that surprised me in this video was the advice against the counterturning. I had previously asked an instructor to help improve my riding down black slopes and he had me doing exercises where I would hold my upper body continually facing downslope (with the arms forward as if holding a picture frame in front of me), while my lower body would be twisting from the waist successively through the turns, 45 degrees to the right then 45 degrees to the left. The idea was that to do quick turns on steep terrain counterotation helps, otherwise it takes too much time and space to turn while keeping everything aligned. When he demonstrated it to me it looked really good and well controlled, not like the guy filmed in this video as an example of bad technique. I wonder what you make of this. Is counterturning to be avoided initially in order to promote good riding posture but as your ability advances it then becomes another skill?

One thing most people don't think about is their general physical strength. If they have weak knees or hips from little exercise in their daily life, it makes balancing on a snowboard more difficult and very tiring. Working on physical fitness when not on the board is a great way to make learning easier as they'll be able to focus on the techniques and not much their legs ache.

Haven't read all the comments but there are great tips in this video. One tip I picked up long time ago that will share was from a pro rider Jamie Lynn in a snowboard mag article. Still go back to it when I find myself getting sloppy when tired or hitting 50mph+ to keep everything stable. Keep arms closer to your body and even freely touching the body position the entire time, left arm outside of torso (left forearm is on left hip) and right arm where your hand would make contact with right pocket opening area. This is for regular binding setup where left foot is in front and if goofy or switch do the mirror opposite.
Torso straight and knees bent as in the video. Also don't forget to stay like an upside down T on the board when the terrain gets steeper and you lean more forward as steeper it gets. Natural instinct is to lean back which causes off-balance and then a fall.
When turning, don't initiate it by throwing the board around but try to start fluid motion from hips, upper legs, knees, lower leg and push out to feet the outside or inside depending on turning heel side or toe side.

This was fantastic. The counter turning is exactly what I was doing completely incorrect because I’m so afraid of catching an edge and just be thrown down. I’ll definitely have to reassess my body positioning for a smoother transition

thank you. i only started riding 5 years ago and only for 9-10days at a time (+every year since) in niseko because i/we go to teach yoga there. my husband's quite good at it and has been riding for decades but anytime someone tried to teach me, i always felt so much pressure at the time to get it right and i caught an edge one year and basically got whiplash! this video is really helpful because i can absorb it first and i will watch it a few more times before we go back next week:) don't tell my husband but i am actually looking forward to trying these tips, the grabbing trousers i tried last year at the advice of a friend and was already really helpful in not making me so stiff and upright!:) thanks again, let's see how it goes... (ps. i never ever commented on youtube videos but felt compelled this time)

I always remember my first snowboard instructor saying to us as we learned to link our turns - “move your body as ONE unit !!” Thank god she saved me from that bad counter rotation habit early on! Getting from intermediate to advanced riding though is hard. I’ve got work to do this season.

I haven't snowboarded in 4 years and I started to od it again this year. I picked remember the mechanics that was able to allow me to carve but now I wanna nail the fundamentals.
Definitely going to give these a try tomorrow since I'm heading up a smaller hill to try and refine my techniques. I have a feeling counter rotation might be one of my problems.
    Always room to improve!!!

Getting back into snowboarding after a few years off. After watching video of myself I definitely counter rotate. In my video, the root cause seems to be the fact I'm trying to keep my eye's downhill when I'm toe side, which is keeping my upper body from following my lower body. Also, taking wide turns on a busy slope feels like a death sentence. I'll be keeping these tips in mind on my next trip.

This was so helpful for me. I come from a longboarding background where you shave speed by always weighting your front foot, and throwing out your back foot, then counterbalancing your body with your chest/arms. They are almost opposite techniques. You just blew my mind by explaining that this technique is why I get so much chatter (especially on my heel side). This also explains my inability to feel comfortable at higher speeds. I will be practicing squaring my shoulders on the mountain all day today.

I used to teach snowboarding way back. My first tip to everyone learning how to ride focuses on your stance: wide, duck and heavy forward lean. The wider your stance the more control you have over the tip and tail of your board increasing ease of turn in and helps with learning how to torsionally flex the board. Duck stance further helps edge control and helps with those moments where you need to ride switch. Heavy forward lean in the highback adjustment, this is my personal favorite. As it does a bunch of things. First, it FORCES a bent knee position! No more awkward straight leg bent over nonsense. Second, it lowers your center of gravity. Third even further enhances the ability to turn. Simply standing all the way up starts a heel turn while rocking forward on your toes easily initiates a toe side turn. Plus you can practice the movement at home!

Now those are some really smooth turns and i want to work on that, but however, how can you do quick and smooth turns? For example that guy that was counter rotating. What i saw was him just controlling his speed while taking up less space as possible and avoiding other riders. How can you do what he is doing but smoother? Its hard to lean into turns so quickly which makes it easier to just throw the back foot in and out. I knew thats how i do it but i also know its not the proper technique. Im a self thought snowboarder and all your tips im taking into consideration to improve my riding. Thank you for your time!

This advice is going to work well if you have enough space for a carve turn. Many times I encounter a crowdy, icy, bumpy or/and steep slope. What would you advice in such a situation to avoid counter rotation?

    • @BoxUnboxed
      @BoxUnboxed 7 років тому +3

Sebastian Stafiej what i figured out is to lean into which side you want to turn then flick the end of the board in the direction for more of an intense turn/slow/stop. So if you are doing a heel side, lean against the mountain then flick the read end down the mountain. It helps turn super fast, while getting a smooth even curve

He kind of shows the motion with his hands @ 7:45 but he doesn't really describe it all the way. There's a thing to teach new riders (or even intermediate riders) jokingly called T-rexing. It's called this because if you lock your elbows into your sides, hold out your hands in a 90 degree angle like you're going to shoot someone in a spaghetti western shootout duel, and try pointing in the direction you want to turn, you'll notice that you're overworking your obliques. One of two things happens, either you are counter-rotating heavily and it will feel uncomfortable, or your hips will follow the natural progression of the turn. It forces the rider to keep his or her body in a natural riding stance. And it's called T-rexing because you'll look like a flailing T-rex as you continuously try to point where you want to go but your whole body will be rotating in the correct motion... It's pretty funny to watch and quite humiliating but if you're counter-rotating a lot, this will help force you into a natural position.

This is an awesome video. I've been ridding for few years now, but had a 5 year break due to an accident. I also ride only a week or two during the season, because I live in the South and have to travel for snowboarding. So, overall, I don't get to enjoy it that much. I figured out some time ago that I need to engage my whole body to really snowboard well, but seeing it on the video and having it explained step-by-step is awesome. I usually do the blue and black trails, but may actually go back to the basics and start doing some green ones to really slow down and practice all those moves from the video. Thank you so much!

I'm torn on on the leaning forward a bit and letting the following foot slide out. If you are trying to snowboard without any style like a grandma that had her hip replaced then this is the video for you. Snowboarding Mrs Daisy two thumbs up. If you want to have style and control that snow like a boss, you have to master having your weight off center slightly and having the ability to control what happens to your board. Oh yeah, when you slightly lead forward in your turns over the leading edge, you can make sharper and crisp turns while maintaining excellent speed..Having your chin over your leading knee also improves your balance and control as a skateboarder, kiteboarder, and snowboarder (I do all three). Some people are looking for a tricked out joy ride and some just want to go vanilla.
