@@TrickerDCS Hi, I have a doubt that I haven't been able to find the answer for in the manuals: after the cartridge start is completed, do I need to ask the Ground Crew to remove the spent cartridges? or that is done after mission end, when the engine is shutdown?

Love the basic start up that hardly changes over the decades...absolute legendary experience in the F-4
I was a crew chief on f4 C D and E we did cart starts all the time lots of smoke but other than that a pretty normal start. I did run up’s on f4’s all the time looking back on it now I can’t believe they would allow a 20 something kid to start up and run F4’s but they did, scared the crap out of me the first time I ran one up my knees were shaking holding the brakes on. Had a captain in the back seat the first time when I had to qualify for the run license. You can’t imagine the power of the phantom until you actually run one up, pretty nuts the C and D were fun because of the model of the j79 they had they made a very distinctive noise when you got above 80 percent throttle, the phantom howl it was called people could tell if we were running above the approved throttle range in the chocks by the noise the jet made.
I was a crew chief on the Marine Corps C-117D back in the 1970s. I sat right seat more times than can remember in that beautiful bird, AND was 'brevet' (our internal term) PIC from startup thru wheels down whenever we weren't hauling pax, ordnance, POL or hazmat. Best job I ever had.
It's been a minute since I've ran the F-4 and I can't remember for sure but I want to say we waited until we 35 or 40% until we went over the horn holding the ignition button. Minor details in the grand scheme of things. Heatblur did a beautiful job on the F4 and I can't wait until I can get it one day
Excellent! For purposes of immersion, I tell myself that my Crew Chief, or maybe WSO, ran through the boring parts of checklists etc while I was taking an unexpected dump. So I have no problems using expedited startup sequences. 😄
Thanks for this Tricker! I watched Reflected’s but- god love him….he goes through every pre start check and test there is (including testing the pitot tube heat). I’m a 52 year old cop on my second wife with 5 kids between us. During the 2-3 times a week when I get 1.5 hours to myself to play, I can’t spend 45 minutes of it checking things I know work. But hot starts are for communists
I'm a bit of both. Sometimes I just like to sit in the cockpit on the taxiway in VR with the canopy open and take in the sights and sounds. When I'm in that mood a full cold and dark start up is perfect. I also only have between 1 and 2 hours a few evenings a week. When I want to do some more flying/action the quicker start up procedure is perfect. Well done to both of you for your efforts!
That cartrage start sounds like something out of Thunderbirds XD I forsee everyone who bothers with cold starts on public servers to do cartrage every time. Cept me, I love the air start
@@Red-Magic also makes me wonder how many people only do a min weapons alignment in the tomcat and when. I always go fine and all the post start checks and planning I do easily takes up the time and then some
@@TrickerDCS i would probably do the start cartridges mainly because i like aircraft that don't need an external source for like electric and air to start their engines. the F-15E/16/18 for example. however i get why the F-4 wouldnt have it. as most aircraft didnt.
This vid helped me realise that I'm on the part of the spectrum located between 'must use the ground air supply rather than cartridge start because realism' and 'CBF doing the BIT tests because I want to bomb shit really soon'. GG, Tricker. Helping us all in unexpected ways.
Just purchased this beautiful aircraft and can’t wait to fly it Although I’m a little scared regarding the key binds, I use winwing products so lots of switches 😬
I don’t have a split throttle. How do you start the left engine bring the throttle up the 50 percent and back down to idle without the right throttle moving with the left throttle??? I’m stumped. I don’t know what key bindings that would prevent this. Edit: I figured it out. Had to add a modifier to the left throttle under axis.
Just a quick note - If you fly VR when Jester asks for Alignment information, you will need to use the same button you used to call up Jester. I have tied several options and that is the only one that worked
how do you advance the throttles? they wont move out of the idle detent when i move mine, and the keybinds that are set for all other aircraft dont work?
Great Tutorial, very helpful After doing the power up procedure for the right engine and repeating it for the left Engine and..... then at (3:45) going back to Recycle the Right Regenerator. RGen to OFF and then ON (UP POSTION) seems very quirky/ not logical. Any reason why? , just interested:)
Thanks for the video!! I do have a side question....the little labels that appear when you hover the mouse over a switch.....mine have disappeared. How do I get those back?
@@TrickerDCS the phantom is my favorite fighter jet and i was so excited for today, sucks quite a bit that ED JUST HAD to make it launch with their update…
As a former f4 crew chief you don’t want to really do a cart start every time the cart start actually uses the same exact starter they the -60 starter cart used but the cartridge spins up the starter with the gases from the cartridge instead of the bleed air from the external starter cart.

The Issue is that when I try to reach for that Red button in the engine it's not letting me go and press it. What should I do?
Is there no more assisted start up with jester?
It’s more focused on the crew chief with jester just doing the alignment. I kind of like this way better.
can you still use jester menu for the crew chief if you have a real back seater? or do you have to use the comm menu instead
Yes you can still use it with a rear seater

NA NA NA NA NA NANA NA PHANTOM NA NA NANA NA NA NA NA NA phantom phantom PHANTOOOOOOM
It seems you could start both engines simultaneously with start cartridges.
Haven’t tried this yet actually
In the real world we would cart start one at a time too much going on to do both at once

@@TrickerDCS much appreciated, thanks!
Can’t you use bleed air to start engine #1?
Why would one use air sources to start if cartridges are faster? Is it a damage thing?
Yah precisely, big bang to get it going
I would imagine the cartridges cause more wear and tear so they'd be reserved more often for scrambling rather than a general take off sortie.
Probably for when there isn't airfield support equipment like in improvised /quick deploy bases during wartime
Because cartridge start can damage the engine. Cartridge is for emergencies only, like scrambles for intercept
Does the phantom use nose wheel steering like the F-16/f-18 or differential breaking like the A-4?
Exactly like the F5 or F86
Nose wheel steering
PSA: to turn while you taxi you need to use nose gear steering button
Can I ask for a quick little help? My radar screen won't light up no matter what I do or what brightness knobs I adjust
For whatever reason I have no steering. Any suggestions?
Gotta hold nose wheel steering while taxing
Is there a stored heading alignment? Or are we doomed to a full alignment time every startup?
About 4:15 there is a jester STH option
Yup sure is!
how would to recommend starting the engines for people who don’t have split throttles?
Just use the key commands to go from idle shutoff to idle, moving the throttle halfway up isn’t necessary in the current build
I swear they modeled the pilot after Robin Olds.
How are you getting Robin Olds in these videos ?
Certain skins have him
@@TrickerDCS Ah, I see, thanks!

I cant get my slats and flaps to go down and my gear wont go up aftertake at like 160 knots

i cant manage to move the throttle. i only have a single throttle hotas. am i doing something wrong?

@@TrickerDCS the phantom is my favorite fighter jet and i was so excited for today, sucks quite a bit that ED JUST HAD to make it launch with their update…
Any reason not to use start cartridges every startup?
As of now, I haven’t seen any damage to the aircraft, so I don’t see why not
It has a change to damage the engine. It's for emergencies only, so shouldn't really use it unless you're on a time crunch to make an intercept
@@Red-Magic If it doesn't damage the engines in-game. I'm going to use it every time. Time crunch and all that.
