  • Ready to go into a dark & wet tunnel filled with cave crickets, bats and sketchy areas? Well in this adventure RJ78 Productions takes me into an a massive tunnel that spills out into a river. With higher river levels, our entrance became something unexpected and what we find along the way, left us with more questions than answers. So come along with me as we head several hundred feet into an underground tunnel that is now a habitat for creatures. Enjoy

What a super cool tunnel to explore! We have something very similar to this where I live. The only difference is that my tunnel has an entrance, an exit, and a side tunnel that splits off in the middle that opens up to a third exit. The coolest part about this tunnel is that towards the end, before you reach the exit, is a massive open room that could totally be used as a hideout/clubhouse. All three entrances/exits have a ton of over grown vines, weeds, and shrubbery that conceals the existence of this tunnel and it’s large room. 20 years ago a bunch of local kids including myself knew about its existence but as it stands now, other than myself and a few close friends, I don’t think anyone knows about it. Periodically my friends and I go down there to check it out and I can tell that no other than us has been there for an extremely long time. Most kids these days don’t explore the way we did when we were their age. Unfortunately kids nowadays would rather stay indoors and play video games, putz around on the computer and communicate/ entertain themselves through social media. So it’s safe to say that the secret of my local underground tunnel is safe! As always I really appreciate and enjoy your urban exploration videos and I look forward to seeing the next one!

I dont think it was a railroad tunnel. I think at one time it had to do with the transport of something and later converted into water drainage. Its far too large though just for a drainage culvert.

@@JPVideos81 Coal one direction, Portland Cement the other. The construction hints at it originally being an open culvert, and barges would float into the cement works to unload incoming, load outgoing. There may have been locks where the level of the tunnel floor increases dramatically.
Later, for whatever reason, probably the culvert walls were slewing (note the present stream undermining of the rock walls, that shows the sedimentary rocks were laid there on mostly soft soil) and a decision was made to use what they had in abundance: cement, mixed into a concrete (and perhaps fly ash too from the kilns) to roof over the culvert. That concrete was poured from above. Ostensibly the remaining space above the concrete was back-filled.
Excellent history on the Ironton Railroad which serviced that operation with a siding at that location:
[The Ironton Railroad was a shortline railroad in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Originally built in 1861 to haul iron ore and limestone to blast furnaces along the Lehigh River, traffic later shifted to carrying Portland cement when local iron mining declined in the early 20th century.
      [...]
In 1884, shortly after its purchase by Thomas Iron, the first shipment of Portland cement was made over the railroad.[15] Extensive cement deposits lie in the vicinity of the line, and cement became an increasing part of the railroad's traffic. This proved to be its saving grace as the local iron mining industry began to decline. The Siegersville Branch was cut back from Orefield to Siegersville sometime between 1876 and 1900. However, passenger service began on the railroad on November 1, 1898.[15]
      [...]
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ironton_Railroad
As to how the tunnel and railroad overlapped in serving those particular kilns (which were inside a much larger building now gone) is a good question.
      Fascinating stuff!

It is an old mill race that has been converted into a storm sewer. The concrete tank by building is where the wheel was driven by water, the rock walls at base of tunnel were the original channel, at some point the concrete arch was installed, then filled over with dirt.

I know where that is I was in their around 1986-87 :) used to live real close to it. Those pipes at the end were not there it was just a small bridge going over a creek and it wasn't blocked overhead you could just climb up to n 2nd street. It's part of the cement kiln above the tunnel, there's lot of places to explore in that area. I could tell you about that you can't see on Google most of it is gone now homes built over the area :) we also used to hunt from a abandoned cement plant in that town that's all town homes now. Lots of Quarry's around there. The manholes go into the Kilns above. It's. Museum now. That off shoot wasn't open back then it's probably from erosion.

Some of those Midwest towns they just had a drainage ditch running through the middle of them at one point then as office buildings and factories were built they just put trussing over the ditch and poured concrete slabs over it. That's what the last part of that tunnel and side shoot looked like to me. The little Indiana town I lived in for awhile as a teen me and a buddy explored the storm drain that dumped into the river. It started looking very modern just being a round concrete culvert then turned to brickwork as we got farther back then it got square, narrower and shorter when we were under the downtown area. Real old brickwork with rusty I beams or old timbers across the top and concrete slabs above that. Some office buildings had basement drains. We could see light and hear office workers talking through them and typewriters running and such.

Looks like a drainage pipe to me. Where you stopped at the end, there were two more drainage pipes running into it. Plus you had manholes and other access points running off of it. Just my opinion, but I'd say that it's part of a drainage system.

    • @JPVideos81

With it being a mill and the distance to the river it makes sense that they would have had a rail system to get the pig iron to the barges. And at the downhill angle it would roll for the most part on its own. Then, once the carts were emptied they probably had a turnstile and side track to take the empty carts back. Try looking for a pad for a donkey engine for pulling the carts back.

Hi Jay, you and RJ make a great team together and you both have that awesome and very funny sense of humour, if someone said to me you were brothers I would believe them as you just bouce off each other very well. The tunnel was a pretty cool find but as for what it's original purpose was I have no clue. Thank you for sharing, great photo's too at the end. Stay safe, much love. xx💖

Outstanding job and my favorite JPVideo yet! I agree with the material transport theory and there are similar tunnels beneath Chicago. The rails may be a clue.

I grew up on the Mississippi. That may be at one point for drainage but I can tell you by the height alone. It's a old delivery station . I bet you deep in the mud outside, you will find dock remnants. Nearby ,there must of been some sort of manufacturing long ago. People were smaller back in the day and usually in the dock tunnels they hired even shorter people. Coal is my opinion, since that is chiefly brought up the Miss this very day,as most American rivers.

neat video but my thought on this tunnel is that it was some type of excavation tunnel which would explain the rails because what I saw when it got to a point where you couldn't go on seemed to me like where air would enter or dust or whatnot would escape could have had to do with the gold rush days.but you can pretty much rule out water drainage tunnel.as for that water where you entered I think that was man made I have never known water to be near a tunnel like that maybe puddles like inside farther due to deteriorating side walls but nothing like in the beginning. so my thought is maybe the water was intended to keep people out but over the years it must have really receded which is a good thing of course. those are not the jimminy crickets in used to harmless or not they are creepy relatives I'll take the back yard cricket s any day of the week plus they are good luck insects especially if you find one in your house.
