- Finding and fshing from shore with a WEIRD bait that is hidden in the sand at the beach.. Does it actually work?? Is it any good? Can we catch some fish with this thing? We head out to go saltwater fishing at the beach in north Florida with a mission - catch whatever bites! What kind of fish would be around the beach this time of year? We build a ghost shrimp pump to try and find some of these weird things.. and then see if fish will eat them and our hook. I did not expect for this to happen..

To make DIY ghost shrimp pump:
(36” long) 2” PVC
(36” long) 3/4” PVC
2” cap (non threaded)
3/4” cap (non threaded)
3/4” tee (non threaded)
2” test plug
5/16” wing nut
5/16”x2” stainless steel bolt
2” stainless steel washer
PVC cement/glue

Out here in South Africa we call em sand prawns. Excellent bait. If you can build a handle on the pump to give you more leverage, it would make it way easier to use. It's pretty common to get many from one hole, as there is a network of channels in the sand.
After learning what a prawn is to you, I will never eat shrimp again.
SA anglers also mistakenly call it a pink prawn.
It makes for excellent bait for spotted grunters!

We have them here in Australia we call them pink nippers and the trick to getting theses is to find a group of holes together and u need to pump faster you can get four yabbies out of a few holes and the pump u built it needs a handle on the side of the pump

My entire immediate family lives down there around central Florida, and while I've been through it multiple times when I lived there, I always get concerned for them.

We call these Yabbies/Nippers in Australia, fantastic bait and catch a very large range of fish. They live on inshore beaches here in big colonies of thousands/tens of thousands (groups of holes all together), they're orange/pinkish here. Most bait shops here sell those pumps but its pretty cool you made your own

You need to push down hard into the sand with the pump and pull the pump up fast. Even in wet sand, it should come up as a long collum of sand. You need a better seal or you're not pulling up fast enough. You should be getting at least 10 shrimp per pull.

That pump you built needs a handle that should be on the side of the pump , make sure the handle has no open ends or it will leak air !

Id push it down as far as i could first then use suction as i pull up. But I’m from Minnesota and don now anything about sucking for bait
We call them bait pumps in the uk and they’re normally welded stainless steel and retail for around £75. Used for pumping black lugworm which I think you call bloodworms. You need a handle on the shaft too btw.
In South Africa we also call them blood worms and then the other bait we call sand prawns.
Good stuff my brother should try putting a handle on the side to push it down deeper when you pump

Like watching your videos. Stay safe! We are from Missouri and we have 2 girls in college in Florida. We have a rooftop tent on my truck and love beach fishing. I built a beach cart from an aluminum cargo carrier from harbor freight and put bonnolo beach wheels on it. It travels on my hitch well and works great in the sand. Keep up the videos and stay safe!

Stay safe! Fishing will be killer after the hurricane passes through. Weirdest bait was probably ghost shrimp for me in California two weeks ago. They sell those everywhere live.

Where I live we have a beach called "the sand bar" take your sand dollar there and see if you can get a sec on the beach😂
your supposed to get them at the peak of a low or high tides and cast them into the waves. in australia they work really well for whiting and bream

You have to be quick with the pump. As soon as the shrimp feel you around there burrow, they start digging. Fast pumps does the trick

In aus we do it in the shallow water on sandy muddy banks and get massive ones also in creek beds ands what not not in the surf

acting like u never seen a yabbie pump before ?? u need to make handle for your off hand, and make the pump handle bigger( make the job alot easier)
In my beach it has bigger holes and never knew they has bait in em!

U should try make a handle for the pump and don't just look for one whole look mor multiple holes grouped together and if u pump a few small ones the pump a bit deeper bigger ones will come
And if pumping them on the sand and none come go a few inches in the water and pump it will work
Nice catch Alex. I’ve had some success Texas-rigging a Zman and it fishes pretty much the same and stands up off the bottom the same as the mushroom head jig but with the benefits of weedless I fish it in heavy cover even on light line. I’ve lost only a very few that got wrapped up around wood most of the time I can work them out of there with patience. Hope that helps.

Hi buddy welcome to South Africans way of making bait and our main way of fishing in South Africa and what we are used to, we have metal pumps with handles for leverage also the edge of water is best and they lay deep down almost the entire pump down in the sand
I use the Angler’s Fishing Mate cart. It’s a 2 wheel, works well for me. Be safe this week with the storm and Static on grilled shrimp is amazing!!! Thanks for everything.
Ya gotta pump faster and here in Australia there called yabbies instead of ghost shrimps you gotta look for a group of holes and they only survive in water so maybe use a bucket with water in it next time and also you gotta stick the hook up it’s bum not being weird to it’s guts aka the orange stuff on its belly ❤😊

Yeah that type of bait in Australia we call them “Yabi’s” and we call the pump a “Yabi pump”
I’m not sure about the price in the us but in Canada to do a diy it’s probably around $130 or more

Where I live, and where I go to the beach I find them but I don't have one of the squirt guns. If the holes are bubbling that means there are ghost shrimp in those holes. That is what someone told me

I live in a fifth wheel and the eye of the storm is going straight over me 5 miles form the coast to with 15ft surge we'll see how this goes
You should use mackerel feathers off the beach
It represents sand ale and is very good for Spanish mackerel I’ve seen you use them on the pair on one of your vids and I thinking he should use them off the pair how you use them. Throw the feathers out really far and then reel them back in but give a tugging movement 😎 it will definitely work at night

we used tp use tennis balls in our tubes for the sucker seemed to work better than Mikeys rig

After hearing you talk about your fishing cart idea...it made me think 🤔...you should just get a wagon with the really big pneumatic tires that can (hopefully) handle the sand. And then tow it behind your electric bike. Maybe you will be able to just take your bike seatpost off the bike, add some pipe insulation to the handle of the wagon. Put the wagon handle over the seat post receiver end, where your seatpost slips into the bike. And then just put your seat post back in and that should attach the wagon to your Bike so you can tow it behind the bike. I think the issue will be, that you will need extra padding on the sides of the wagon handle so it can't move left to right as much.
I have a spot in Victoria Australia and I’ll tell you what I can pull out at least 200 in half an hour of ghost shrimp or bass yabby‘s or clickers
they're actually very common bait here in South Africa
To keep bait on you while either gathering bait or while fishing, take a plastic milk jug and cut the top part off opposite the handle. Slip your belt thru the handle and you have the cheapest bait carrier or tackle carrier around.

Ur best of using a long shank bait keeper hook and u thread them on the hook through the tail they need to be still alive when you cast them out
