I'd say DEH actually is more part of the high school musical genre than BMC. I'm obsessed with BMC but it's not really about high school itself as much as say, Heathers or DEH.

QOTD: Spongebob the Musical. It's not really underrated but it's considered juvenile because it's...well... Spongebob. It really pops off but a lot of my theatre friends avoid it, despite my endless reccommendations lol
I haven't listened to the whole thing yet, but I listened to about half and I have seen a few videos about why it deserves to be taken seriously. so far I really enjoy the music, and the set design is incredible.

I agree, this show is really underrated. As soon as I listened to the cast recording and watched the television event on Nick, I immediately fell in love with the show. Everything in it is near perfect(scenic design, songs, characters, etc.). I would love for Kat to do a video on Spongebob the Musical because of how underrated the show it is. Great Comet never gets enough attention because it was on Broadway for such a short time, and when people do talk about it, they always talk about the scandal at the end, not about the beautiful story and music. I saw it twice, and it still remains one of my absolute favorite shows of the decade.
Have you checked out Ghost Quartet? It’s another show by Dave Malloy, and the music is in a similar style, and it’s AMAZING. All of the lack of rhymes, the unusual rhythms, and Britain is in it!

Qotd: Elisabeth!!!! It's a German musical about empress sisi. It's dark gothic and romantic and this show is pretty huge in Europe and I wish they made a Broadway production of it. Edit: there are a lot of proshots and bootlegs of the show on UA-cam, however most of them are not in English but some of them have subtitles!
Can I say Hunchback is such a choir heavy show. I did the show and it was very choir heavy plus the story is kinda told by ensamble with the main characters and I love stories/musicals like Hunchback.

I really wish more people knew about Bare: A pop opera. It’s literally the sweetest but saddest, most complex yet simple musical I’ve ever seen. I didn’t even get halfway through without totally falling in love with all (well most) of the characters and the story is just so capturing I’m so surprised it didn’t make Broadway.

Very much in the high-school musical genre, except it's about kids turning... you guessed it... *thirteen.* You might've seen some songs on tiktok, you may know it as BOTH ARIANA GRANDE'S AND ELIZABETH GILLIES'S DEBUTS Songs like "Hey Kendra" and "Bad News" are laugh-out-loud funny, "Terminal Illness" and "Any Minute" are hilarious when you watch them, "Tell Her" and "A Little More Homework" are such happy feel-good songs, "Thirteen" and "Brand New You" absolutely slap, and there are some great audition pieces throughout the show for almost young-adult role you can think of

A musical more people should know about? Starry the musical for sure! It’s a musical all about Vincent Van Gogh and his life. It’s so good and touching. If you are a fan of classical paintings and art history I would definitely recommend it!!

I’m utterly in love with the mad ones!! I was hooked since the first time I heard Ben’s run away with me, and when the full cast recording came out I was absolutely struck. It’s so raw and human and beautifully written and sung, and the cast is phenomenal-it just. is my soul (also, tuck everlasting is MASSIVELY underrated and the story of winnie foster is one of the most beautiful pieces of dance storytelling ever made) ALSO GREAT COMET. It’s well known but the world needs to appreciate it more, there’s a divinity in it unlike anything else, the interactivity makes it exactly the kind of theatre I want to create (not to mention that I’d give anything to play natasha)
I loooove Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, though I only listened to it after I saw the Wait in the Wings video on it - I love the dark humour and cynicism, and they got the emo music and visual style down so perfectly in a way you wouldn't expect to work with US history but it really does, and I wonder what a revival would be like
I love The Pirate Queen! Stephanie J. Block's vocals and acting are always amazing! As for your first question, I think Bridges of Madison County is underrated, and would love to hear you do a video on it. The music is absolutely gorgeous!!!

I would love for Come From Away to become more well known! It is such an emotional rollercoaster, from somber to hilarious in the span of a chorus! More folks should experience it! Also, the way they use minimal stage props and cast, and keep rearranging a bunch of chairs as the predominant set pieces while playing multiple people is really fun to watch! Edit: With next year being the 20th anniversary of 9/11, it is also the perfect time for the show to be more relevant!
One musical I would love to see you talk about is Rag Dolly/Raggedy Ann on Broadway! It's not well known because well, for a while, it was considered lost media! The show closed after FIVE DAYS due to complaints about the dark themes not being suitable for children. We're talking death and su*cide dark. A cast album was never released and all we have is a bootleg and a demo recording, but the history behind the show is incredibly interesting! It was original created as part of a culture exchange program headed by Patricia Snyder between the US and Russia. The original cast even did a tour in Moscow before Broadway where they sang in both English AND Russian. Besides Patricia there were a handful of big names attached to the flop, including Sesame Street composer Joe Raposo and writer William Gibson of Miracle Worker fame.
also, thank you for mentioning Urinetown omg! I was in a production of it last year before the pandemic and its honestly my favorite show Ive ever been in even though we never got to perform it. It's such a hilarious show with so many things to learn from and explore

I didn’t even get halfway through without totally falling in love with all (well most) of the characters and the story is just so capturing I’m so surprised it didn’t make Broadway.

Very much in the high-school musical genre, except it's about kids turning... you guessed it... *thirteen.* You might've seen some songs on tiktok, you may know it as BOTH ARIANA GRANDE'S AND ELIZABETH GILLIES'S DEBUTS
Songs like "Hey Kendra" and "Bad News" are laugh-out-loud funny, "Terminal Illness" and "Any Minute" are hilarious when you watch them, "Tell Her" and "A Little More Homework" are such happy feel-good songs, "Thirteen" and "Brand New You" absolutely slap, and there are some great audition pieces throughout the show for almost young-adult role you can think of

I’m utterly in love with the mad ones!! I was hooked since the first time I heard Ben’s run away with me, and when the full cast recording came out I was absolutely struck. It’s so raw and human and beautifully written and sung, and the cast is phenomenal-it just. is my soul (also, tuck everlasting is MASSIVELY underrated and the story of winnie foster is one of the most beautiful pieces of dance storytelling ever made) ALSO GREAT COMET. It’s well known but the world needs to appreciate it more, there’s a divinity in it unlike anything else, the interactivity makes it exactly the kind of theatre I want to create (not to mention that I’d give anything to play natasha)

I loooove Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, though I only listened to it after I saw the Wait in the Wings video on it - I love the dark humour and cynicism, and they got the emo music and visual style down so perfectly in a way you wouldn't expect to work with US history but it really does, and I wonder what a revival would be like

I would love for Come From Away to become more well known! It is such an emotional rollercoaster, from somber to hilarious in the span of a chorus! More folks should experience it! Also, the way they use minimal stage props and cast, and keep rearranging a bunch of chairs as the predominant set pieces while playing multiple people is really fun to watch!
Edit: With next year being the 20th anniversary of 9/11, it is also the perfect time for the show to be more relevant!

One musical I would love to see you talk about is Rag Dolly/Raggedy Ann on Broadway! It's not well known because well, for a while, it was considered lost media! The show closed after FIVE DAYS due to complaints about the dark themes not being suitable for children. We're talking death and su*cide dark. A cast album was never released and all we have is a bootleg and a demo recording, but the history behind the show is incredibly interesting!
It was original created as part of a culture exchange program headed by Patricia Snyder between the US and Russia. The original cast even did a tour in Moscow before Broadway where they sang in both English AND Russian. Besides Patricia there were a handful of big names attached to the flop, including Sesame Street composer Joe Raposo and writer William Gibson of Miracle Worker fame.
