HEY THEATRE FRIENDS! Today, we're going to be discussing Ratatouille the #TikTok Musical. That's a sentence I absolutely thought I'd never say but hey, anything is possible in 2020.
Anyway, the #RatatouilleMusical ruined my life, so we're going to talk about it. We're going to cover a brief history of the Ratatousical, what it's evolved into, my contribution, and ultimately my thoughts (both on the musical and the meme).
Also if you're reading this and have no clue what I'm talking about--This is not real. I mean it’s real in our hearts! But a lot of people have been confused by fan edits or joke announcements saying that it’s coming to #Broadway next season. It’s not, it’s a meme that has evolved far past what any theatre kid thought possible. I want to hear your thoughts on all of this (The musical, the meme, tiktok in general-- literally anything!), so let me know in the comments below!

Yes exactly!! Its so fun being around my theater friends because they're basically duplicates of me so no one slacks and everyone's unusually peppy 😂
I'm not that lucky - I'm in a group of people who have been attending since they were like five, just because they were hyperactive, so they're mostly not typical theatre kids and still have better skills because I've started this year and before that, I was just an observer and at-house-solo-singer.
In my school no one wants to be there bc our director is the absolute worst and we have been waiting for her retirement for 10+ years (she’s 71 so it’s justifiable)

I believe that Ratatouille is a really great story, especially for a musical! It would make for a super good musical because it hasn’t been done and I just think it would be really good and there is a lot of creativity that can go in it!

“It’s like elevator music for your brain, except you’re the elevator music and also the elevator?” That’s a perfect description. Within a span of the time it took me to eat dinner tonight, my mind went from “Call Back in the Morning,” to “Ah, Miss,” to “Kiss Me” to, “You Love Who You Love,” to “I Don’t Know What I’d Do Without You,” and I had no idea “I Don’t Know What I’d Do Without You” was stuck in my head until about ten minutes after I finished eating. And now “Winter Blooms” is stuck in my head, if anyone cared to know my current mind-elevator music.

I'm invested with Ratatouille the musical without even being on TikTok. Like, I'm having random thoughts about the plot and the setup and all that jazz and keep posting it places. And while the song that started it all grates, I get why its big. I too catch myself singing it to myself here and there. God I want this musical to get green lit so bad
On this to-scale-of-the-rats set design thing, when going between scenes of humans and rats, the sets should grow, like in The Nutcracker. Also Andrew Barth Feldman or Isaac Powell for Alfredo Linguini. That dad in tik tok who looks like the food critic should play the food critic (does anyone know who I'm talking about????) But also how iconic would Wesley Taylor be as the food critic? Krysta Rodriguez or Samantha Pauly should be Collette. The show should be choreographed by Casey Nicholaw and Christopher Gattelli working together. I say this because, we need that Book of Mormon feel when the humans dance, and like Newsies levels of extra for the rats' dancing. Quarantine has given me far too much time to be thinking about this. Like seriously, I had a very serious conversation about casting the Ratatouille musical with my friend the other day. I kinda imagine Remy controlling Linguini as an aerial dance segment, the laces could be the hair and Remy would be doing stuff and singing as Linguini cooks. It looks so hilariously epic in my head...
The funniest thing as that Disney knows what we’re doing. But they really can’t say anything unless we profit off of it so there just like “ you know what they have nothing else” and Disney is actively building a ratatouille attraction in epicot. And though ratatousical is just a meme, there is an account running it and he is actually trying to create it. His name is josh and his account is called ratatouillethemusical. He lets people email him with ideas. I have no idea how he is gonna pull this off

Kat The set you just described is Literally Remy’s Ratatouille adventure (aka Ratatouille : L'Aventure Totalement Toquée de Rémy) in the Disney Paris theme park and I’m in on it
I’d be awesome if remy at one point (while being chased) went under a stove and then the heat was turned on and the audience could feel the heat turn up like they were under the stove with remy
Kat genuine question could legitimate musicals be conceived and produced this way. Given how big social media is could campaigns and concepts like this attract producers/directors as they think they will attract an audience particularly a young one who may not typically go to the theatre/theater.

I like the OG video but the one that’s the “big broadway number” fills me with such rage I can’t explain why
I’m prettyy sure they decided to cut that song lol
I have an idea about the opening number: "The Rat Of All Our Dreams". It could be re-written so the lyrics say "Remy made the ratatouille, this rat made the ratouille of our dreams..". The lyrics could be sang at the beginning and the stage is set as the restaurant with waiters weaving in and out between the different tables as the customers are seated and they are singing these lyrics. Then they all freeze and a spotlight then shines on Remy and he is all like "so this is all I got all the this fame"kinda like the beginning of the movie when he is escaping that old ladies house and there is a freeze frame. It probably sounds cheesy (no pun intended) but that way the lyrics make more sense.
Not enough people have been including the song "le festin" from the movie. Idk where it could go but it needs to be included somewhere
you talking about the lunch rush scene where they figure out the hair-pulling technique gave me a great idea:
the set for the kitchen will be downstage and an elevated platform will be upstage. remy is on the platform with backlighting so he’s just a silhouette (to represent that he is in the hat) and linguini is in the kitchen with stark lighting to raise the anxiety of the scene.
linguini struggles to keep up as the scene gets more and more stressful with lots of cooks dancing around him (to represent that they are good at cooking) while he stumbles and gets lost. remi is also stressed under that hat while he tries to escape the situation when suddenly their movements match up and the lighting explodes (similar to the scene in the movie where he tastes good complementary flavors).
the pair realize what just happens and remy does it again slowly and more cautiously. it escalates until the pair are dancing together in perfect unison. as they dance the scene gets calmer. the music swells, the lights fade until its just linuini dancing/cooking in the spotlight with remi’s silhouette in the back. the rest of the cooks dance in the dark to show they the pair are in the “zone” and light as well be the only people in the kitchen.
the scene ends with linguini setting down the dish of perfectly prepared food in front of colette.
The playbill account on Instagram used that playbill but added “Brooks Ratkinson” for the theatre......

I love the idea of this becoming a broadway musical!! It’s so cool to think that a bunch of bored theatre kids created a masterpiece
I agree with the fact that humans playing rats could go “Cats” creepy but huge puppets/animatronics could go “Chucky Cheese” creepy so that could also be kept in mind.

I love this so much! (The video, not the musical. I have no feelings on the musical. I knew it existed, but haven't actually heard any of it. I would love to see this actually go to Broadway someday, though. That would be so cool! It could really revolutionize the way musicals are written, and make writing musicals so much more accessable! Unlikely, but one can dream.) I haven't laughed this hard in days. Thanks, Kat! I've had a rough few weeks, so this was much needed.
Okay, so I went looking a bit, and... I think I love it. I love this with all my heart. It's so wonderful, and just fun! This Ratatusical may be the best thing to come out of quarantine, or TikTok, or 2020 in general. Eeeee!

When I read the title, I was so scared that you were gonna say that you hated the musical.
I love it and my contribution was making a ratatouille cover of Alexander Hamilton on TikTok. The first lyrics were “how does a stinky greasy rat from the sewers...”
i'm not on tiktok, so i was incredibly shocked when i heard there was a ratatouille musical. kinda makes me wanna join tiktok, but i'm also scared as hell so i think i'll stay away haha

Here’s my ideas (not super original ig)
- Using puppetry for when the rats look smaller (like when we see them as compared to people), is an excellent idea. Shadow puppets in particular would keep the vibe both simplistic and charming.
- I want to talk about costumes for a minute here, as I do agree with what you said, we do NOT want a cats-type situation with it. I’d say maybe using a few simplified elements such as the tails and ears of a rat, or using fluffier, baggier clothes for the rat’s costumes. They’d have to be comfortable and loose enough to move around in, however. as we’ve seen, people have been making some really good choreography for this, and we don’t want to mess that up in any way, especially for the rats.
-Perhaps when Linguini and Remy are interacting with each other directly, we could have Linguini hold the puppet while Remy stands on a platform to the side, kind of like a close-up so we can see how Remy reacts. Playing with scale in this musical is really important for making it seem real and dynamic. This is what’s difficult for making a movie like this into a musical-we don’t want to break immersion while also keeping it viable for a stage.
- As far as set goes, I think that keeping it compact is the best way to go. We could utilize different levels (like using balconies and platforms), as well as dividing the stage such that different scenes can be going on at the same time. Like I’ve said before, scale is key.
- Also, using projections would be a neat way to integrate the beautiful animation from the original movie into the set. (I’m referring to the shots of Paris here, when Remy looks out onto the city from the top of the restaraunt.)
- I saw a tiktok with this before, but using oversized props and set pieces with the rats would also make sure that we know the difference between a rat’s and a person’s point of view.
Those are my thoughts for the technical aspects of this musical. I’ve definitely invested WAY too much time and effort for this that dosent even exist.

The puppet scene was an actual thing. The sizes were an actual thing. It would be humans in a hat with ears and tails, but regular clothes.
Is it bad that I genuinely want to see this musical become a real production? Post-Covid, it could run off-broadway or something (I know it costs a lot to mount a show but I honestly think that the money could pretty easily be raised) and we could have a real professional cast (hopefully a mix of broadway actors and TikTok actors who made this a thing) and CAN WE PLEASE HAVE ABF AS LINGUINI idk I think this would be a really great show. OH and it could be professionally filmed and released like a starkid show, since it has a similar type of following.
