Jocko I constantly listen to your 15 minute TED Talk over extreme ownership over and over when I find myself trying to take the easy way out by blaming others or external factors for my problems. I also enjoy these motivational podcasts you post especially Drago’s (Thomas Dzieran) story.
This heartbreaking on-the-ground description is something we who have not served in the field will simply never understand. Love and heartfelt thanks to both of you for what you endured.
This is why I believe all Presidential candidates should be required to serve a minimum of 4 years active duty. Otherwise, they likely have no real concept of the costs of war, or what it takes to be a leader. Without exposure to that kind of fundamental knowledge, they have no business being Commander in Chief of our military.

Maybe it's because I'm not American but I don't understand how America can screw up so badly, how your President can't form a sentence, how your VP laughs at mention of Afghanistan and tells the Vietnamese "America is back," and how the military stands behind this, mainly talking about sexuality. Not to mention how the US regional commander have the SAS a dressing down for rescuing civilians.
As an American, I don’t understand it either. I sure AF didn’t/dont/never will understand this current govt of mine. It’s an embarrassment to all my family sacrificed for.
This general shouldn't be so hard on himself but I understand why he is, there's no way to double check the competence of all those under your command, there's certainly a certain expectation that those you command have been trained properly and will carry out the procedures to the best of their ability.

You can't control what others do. You can only control how you react and move forward. Letting others control you will only hold you back. Push past their character however you see fit and that is what will make you a success. It's always what you do with what you got that pays off in the end. There is no better satisfaction than proving others wrong about you. Never give others the amunition they need to keep you down. Because that is all they are doing, punishing you because it gives them power over you. And never make the same mistake twice.
Your not understanding what extreme ownership is. It’s not saying I screwed up so others will say it’s ok. It’s not about the opinions of others. It’s about saying something needs to be acted on or corrected and I will take it on myself to do this. You can take take ownership of a mistake and find no forgiveness from anyone but you do it anyway because it’s the right thing to do.

Taking the burden of others upon yourself is madness. You are not strong and wise, you are just insane and mad. In addition, it is simply unethical to control and manipulate others.
