I screwed up bad in high school. I'd get suspended and go work in the lumber yard (rewarding my self with pay). Im a concrete carpenter and hydrovac operator now. I'm one of the only guys who reads books and understands extreme ownership (thanks to Jocko) on the crews BUT its incredibly frustrating at times (everyones hung over & dabbling with drugs). I'm currently reading a book by Christina hoff Sommers - "the war against boys". She just mentioned that being suspended ONCE reduces our chances of graduating high school by 17%. FML. I wish I had better leadership back then. BUT, I get up at 4am and get on the pull up bar. I just had a long walk with my working dog in the rain (GOOD.) so she can get after it early too and feel relaxed today. Discipline = Freedom. Im getting after it and have a plan. ...Also, just gifted the way of the warrior kid to my single mom friend and her young son LOVES it -"read me one more chapter" x4 :) She messaged me last night that she just ordered #2 & 3. My parents routinely make fun of me for not knowing the things they didn't bother to teach me. For example my mother always thinks that I don't have any technical skills in terms of construction work. When I was young she always told me this. When I wanted to help, she told me "don't bother, you are bad at this". So I only did construction things away from house. When I'm helping others they are grateful it's fun to do. But when I'm at home, I will only get negativity towards me when I'm helping. I get told "you're doing it wrong", so I ask "can you show me how then?". Then I get told to get out. Not even allowed to watch and learn. Just so that they can make fun of me later on. I don't mind. It taught me that I shouldn't help my parents because they don't want help from me. Got enough things to learn and do for my own life anyway.
to add to what Jocko said ~ while in college, my father expressed and i understood: you can enjoy booze, drugs, women, now..... - the easy fun - or you can focus on this degree - and the kind of fun you will have later in life. I know you dont see it now, but it will by far exceed those simple pleasures. hard concept to grasp in a young moment - but the reality is that - put in the work, and the payout later is boat houses and boats - not a day on a boat with someone you will never know again. Not a puff one night. not a hammered night. A life of choosing when your pleasure comes. And some if not most of that you will find is a job well done.

This is going to sound strange... I was in "Electronics Technicians' A-School" for the U.S. Navy, and we'd reached the "last chapter" of "Basic Electricity and Electronics"... "Solid State Devices". We'd also changed instructors... BUT on the final exam, 90% of the class failed... most of us didn't even get better than 40%... SO... our original instructor came back and looked over the tests, and he determined that our "new" instructor had neglected a bunch of the material, AND he arranged a two-week "crash course" to get through the stuff we hadn't covered in class before... thus admitting, "Yep, you all failed because we had failed you." ;o)

But nice try to test me. You have no year(s)... or you could look up where the A-school was, give or take the approximate dates when they stopped calling anything an "A-school" and went with "Tech' Corps" and then separated students into varying schools from there by their "Rates" (Navy-ese for "Means Of Service" or "M.O.S.")... BUT you'd likely only narrow down to two or three possibilities, as officers move around the services almost as often as the Enlisted... ;o)

I would venture to say that not only were you never in ET A school, I'd guess you were never in the US Navy, or the military at all, since you had no idea what MOS actually stands for.

Challenging youths to use critical thinking , forcing them to attempt to understand and analyze all the decisions they make (and the impact of those decisions), is a big contributor to building confidence in themselves. Which, in my opinion, gives them the strength to start taking ownership and leading a powerful and meaningful life. Thank you for sharing your passion, and explaining the power of responsible leadership the way you know how. This is one of the most important things a community, company, classroom, team, etc. can have, responsible leadership that knows how to take ownership, good or bad.
as a 2 year old man I've realized that my past moments where I disregarded the subordinate position of myself as a fetus was just completly disrespectful. Sincerly, thank you Jocko for correcting my mistakes by punching my moms belly when I was once inside her. Now I'm lifting 225 12 reps x 5 and make a 4k a month income job for my mom.
Jocko's videos always seem to pop up when you need that specific lesson the most. As a high school teacher myself, i struggle trying to convey this kind of message to my students also. It's sad to me that covid has ruined now the end and start of 2 school years. There was no closure to the first and there is no real "beginning" with this coming year. Regardless, im going to take the message of showing that ownership in both myself and to my students. Violence brings violence, and our obsession about physical violence makes us sometimes blind to the incredible amount of suffering that made the punches and shit happen. Y'know. Wow this is so helpful for me to apply at work!!!! I’m a closing manager and have been having a hard time wrapping my head around these young kids #1 not showing up, not calling in, walking off on the job because they had a spur the moment “religious service”, and taking their breaks per their social life schedule #2 having no initiative or interest to actually work, stay busy or ask, “what’s next?” #3 not even showing up on their first day The behavior of these kids should fall back on the parents and I cannot believe that these parents would actually allow their kids to behave like this....what kind of parenting have they actually done? They absolutely don’t care to work or do a good job. Go figure, I’m in an affluent Bay Area suburb and most families are intelligent and well off, but the way these kids act at work just blows my mind. They don’t understand that this first job will actually teach them valuable work/life experience. You can really tell who’s gonna make it and who won’t......now I sound like my parents when I say this: ”I can’t imagine what the world will be like in 50 years when these kids are running the working world....” my god. One way to truly drive home the message that Jocko made about the classroom is to praise the good students. Tell them they're on the right path and don't just give attention to poor behavior.
I appreciate the perspective. Put this to use twice this morning with my kids. The first time it helped redirect some negative behavior towards each other. The second time it helped me and my wife pause a minute when another child said something insensitive.

Yes they are. Thanks for sharing about wishing you had better leadership when you were younger. I've head similar thoughts which clearly are counterproductive. The "clear path" was the most difficult thing to find but the most important asset I gained . Large portion of that was discovered in my service. The rest was discover with me creating my own paths that 1- allow for survival 2- won't get me thrown in jail 3- will be productive for the people around me
Selfishness= ACTIONS- choosing to only look out for my own interests INACTIONS- Choosing not to do anything about the sufferings of others. The choices I make do have an impact on my future. Rightfully saying that the choices other people in my community make can equally impact my life. If my wife spends the income I worked for, on bags and makeup, this is going to impact us. If I choose not to work this is going to impact us. If a lady is being assaulted in an alley as I am walking by I can choose action on her behalf, or inaction on my behalf. I am 32 now. I remember back in HS I almost got into a fight at the cafeteria, we threw food at each other and were about to throw hands but got stoped. They suspended me for 2 days and I thought it was really stupid way of solving the issue. I was a good kid standing up to a bully, I snuck into school in order to ask my teachers what the homework was going to be and I recalled them taking a breath of air as I explained what happened. How will screwing up my education is going to make me better? They should have made us do community service or something that would had made us pay for what we did.
I used to get asked the same questions (in the first few minutes of this video) as a kid by teachers and I never gave them a clear answer. And that's because I had no self worth. I didn't think I was worth answering that question. I knew they cared about me, which is why they were asking, but I didn't care about ME.
Would love to see Jocko try to reason with a class full of kids from Chicago or Detroit or Baltimore or something. You wanna see something that'll make someone like even Jocko give up? That'd be it right there.

I had a chemistry teacher do this to me when I was being disruptive in a summer course during a lecture. He was a football coach. I felt ashamed immediately. Got an A in that class.
I can tell you as a parent with 12 plus years of dealing with teachers, not a single one has ever taken extreme ownership in my personal experience, Or ANY kind of ownership for that matter
it's complicated, because you need the right teacher with the correct interests in common to make that initial connection, otherwise you're seen as another enemy
Echo, same experience with my nice Grade 7 music teacher, who failed to read the room with my problem classmates, whom had no interest in music. Short version, he was away one day, and the sub did not show. Those same kids acted up, and trashed the music room, including destroying the teacher's treasured jazz records that he adorned the room. He came back the next day, and suffered a mental breakdown, and left the school after. Needless to say, kids are nasty.
Damn that really, really hurts my heart. Reminds me how bad I and other children were. I never destroyed a teachers stuff, but I've said cruel things and seen kids do cruel stuff. My parents weren't even aware. Nor did anyone teach us that these teachers are people that feel and hurt.
I always had a good work ethic. I never post or read my comments to early because I’m not in the mood when I first get up. to many annoyingly stupid people. it’s funnier later in the day.
What I have seen, unfortunately, are that alot of times the teacher's hands are tied. Discipline isn't allowed and/or the parents complain that poor Suzie or Joey shouldn't be disciplined, and/ or the principal won't back up the teacher. I am not a teacher. This is just what I've seen.
Whoever doesn’t get caught shooting spitballs yet hits their targets with 96% accuracy... go on to become special ops spitwad snipers. Many times their parents had failed them so they never had the tools themselves. Their incompetence is then passed on to their kids and so on until someone finds the tools and break the cycle.

The "clear path" was the most difficult thing to find but the most important asset I gained . Large portion of that was discovered in my service. The rest was discover with me creating my own paths that 1- allow for survival
2- won't get me thrown in jail
3- will be productive for the people around me
Selfishness= ACTIONS- choosing to only look out for my own interests
INACTIONS- Choosing not to do anything about the sufferings of others.
The choices I make do have an impact on my future. Rightfully saying that the choices other people in my community make can equally impact my life.
If my wife spends the income I worked for, on bags and makeup, this is going to impact us. If I choose not to work this is going to impact us.
If a lady is being assaulted in an alley as I am walking by I can choose action on her behalf, or inaction on my behalf.

I am 32 now. I remember back in HS I almost got into a fight at the cafeteria, we threw food at each other and were about to throw hands but got stoped. They suspended me for 2 days and I thought it was really stupid way of solving the issue. I was a good kid standing up to a bully, I snuck into school in order to ask my teachers what the homework was going to be and I recalled them taking a breath of air as I explained what happened. How will screwing up my education is going to make me better? They should have made us do community service or something that would had made us pay for what we did.
I used to get asked the same questions (in the first few minutes of this video) as a kid by teachers and I never gave them a clear answer.
And that's because I had no self worth. I didn't think I was worth answering that question. I knew they cared about me, which is why they were asking, but I didn't care about ME.
So much wisdom.

As a former middle school teacher saying to a disruptive student in my class, telling that student, where did i not communicate w/ you to not do this behavior from you? A answer from kid might be, I don't care. Now what? My point is this behavior has stopped your teaching to the entire class. If you the teacher

A principal knows that’s what is going to happen, the weight on their shoulders to motivate and manage a captive audience is immense.
This kind of issue is the tip of the tip of the iceberg in terms of the issues they’re navigating.
I had a chemistry teacher do this to me when I was being disruptive in a summer course during a lecture. He was a football coach. I felt ashamed immediately. Got an A in that class.

When Jocko's voice hits your ear drums
Echo, same experience with my nice Grade 7 music teacher, who failed to read the room with my problem classmates, whom had no interest in music. Short version, he was away one day, and the sub did not show. Those same kids acted up, and trashed the music room, including destroying the teacher's treasured jazz records that he adorned the room. He came back the next day, and suffered a mental breakdown, and left the school after. Needless to say, kids are nasty.
Damn that really, really hurts my heart. Reminds me how bad I and other children were. I never destroyed a teachers stuff, but I've said cruel things and seen kids do cruel stuff. My parents weren't even aware. Nor did anyone teach us that these teachers are people that feel and hurt.

What I have seen, unfortunately, are that alot of times the teacher's hands are tied. Discipline isn't allowed and/or the parents complain that poor Suzie or Joey shouldn't be disciplined, and/ or the principal won't back up the teacher. I am not a teacher. This is just what I've seen.

Many times their parents had failed them so they never had the tools themselves. Their incompetence is then passed on to their kids and so on until someone finds the tools and break the cycle.
