Just don't run into that line that keeps chasing you. Shoot at the shield surrounding the base on the right so you can expose it. In some modes you have to touch the base to get that missile that appears on the left, others you touch the left side. I could be forgetting. It looked like this guy was doing both. Then fire the missile at the base or the swirl it becomes to go to next level. Line can't hurt you in the colorful ion zone but you can't shoot either (and swirl can still kill you there).

I'm not from Gen X, but this game has always stuck out to me amongst the whole Atari catalog. The sound design, the gameplay, the objective. It's all really unique and there really hasn't been another game I've seen that's really like this. Even the game being almost 50 years old, I'm still impressed with it to this day, and this is coming from a 25 year old in 2022.
@exiledmonastic4650 lol 😅 it's pretty rare, but my parents were old-school. Somehow, 90s games are too hard for me, but 2020s and 1970s games are perfect. Not sure why but that's me!
I'm a millennial, 42 now and I will always hold Atari 2600 dear in my heart. Was the first console I had the pleasure of playing and owning. From that I moved to a game boy and then SNES.....Proper happy days. I love nostalgia so much. Nearly as much as I love the Atari's awesome audio. 💪😁💪

This is the PAL version. So fun when played on Ultimate Yars mode with bouncing shots and faster enemy shots. I never got pass when the shield turns gray, though I often end up blue. Hitting the laser shot while it is flying for automatic extra life and reaching pink shield takes sheer luck. Whoever's playing is a master.
Yar's Revenge is still an incredible game 43 years later. I am obsessed with destroying those flying swirls for big points and extra lives. I play it via Atari 50.
Yeah, it's slightly similar to fainting humming from late night street sweepers at Walmart. It always felt nostalgic hearing the echos of them and I would fall asleep easily hearing them.

There's a distinct sense of satisfaction that occurs when the Qotile turns into a buzzsaw, launches itself at you, and you aim the Zorlon cannon just right to blast it in mid-flight.
The pink shield levels with no neutral zone are very tough. Although the shield doesn’t change colors after pink, the swirls make even more turns. As if that’s not hard enough, instant firing pink swirls are almost impossible to avoid, unless you’re at the top (or bottom) far edge of the screen. 🤔
I always thought Atari games were too primitive to be fun, but recently decided to buy the 50th anniversary collection out of curiosity. This has become - by far - my favorite 2600 game. It's addictive firing that "sorlon cannon" at the "quotile".
Atari games being too primitive to be fun is such an ignorant mindset that's likely bred by the current industry. Atari games are simple fun and prove that you don't need a lot to have a good time
I didn’t grow up with these games but I do think it’s funny to call them primitive when they can compare to good mobile games that seem addicting. Even better than some.
It seems to me that I owned this game back when I was 8 or 9 or 10...I certainly do remember the graphics...that said, it was probably one of many Atari games that if I didn't understand how to play it outright, I gave up and moved on to another one. Yar's Revenge actually looks like a fairly challenging game that offered some top notch graphics (with consideration given to both the time frame and the limits of the Atari 2600 of course).
The Yar's is one of my favorite games for the Atari 2600, I lost in counting how much times I played it by hours, has a very good graphics considering his system specs, his sound effects are awesome, I have a cartridge for the PAL/SECAM version, I know it because I always need to set the vertical hold on my NTSC TV set for play it and reset for play other cartridges...
@@Ozzy242 Yeah, like Asteroids basically. Once you're good enough, it really only ends when you fall asleep. I heard the Asteroids world champion amassed 41,838,740 after an exhausting 58 hours of non-stop playing. Really just a test of endurance at that point.
The player controls an insect-like creature called a Yar who must nibble or shoot through a barrier in order to fire his Zorlon Cannon into the breach. The objective is to destroy the evil Qotile, which exists on the other side of the barrier. The Qotile can attack the Yar, even if the barrier is undamaged, by turning into the Swirl and shooting across the screen. In early levels the player is warned before the Swirl is fired, and can retreat to a safe distance to dodge the attack. The Yar can hide from a pursuing destroyer missile within a "neutral zone" in the middle of the screen, but the Yar cannot shoot while in the zone. The Swirl can kill the Yar anywhere, even inside the neutral zone. To destroy the Qotile or the Swirl, the player has to either touch the Qotile or eat a piece of the shield to activate the Zorlon Cannon, aim the cannon by leading the with the Qotile or Swirl, then fire the cannon and fly the Yar out of the path of the cannon's shot. If the weapon finds its mark, the level ends. If the cannon blast hits a piece of the shield or misses, it is expended. The cannon itself is dangerous, for once it is activated, the fire button launches it instead of firing the Yar's usual shots, and as the cannon tracks the Yar's vertical position, players effectively use the Yar itself as a target and therefore must immediately maneuver to avoid being hit by their own shot. The cannon shot can also rebound off the shield in later levels. An extra life is earned if the player shoots the Swirl in mid-air. -- Wikipedia.
This is on the variation where the Zorlon Cannon shots bounce off the Qotile shield and you have to return back to the left side of the screen to turn on the Cannon. Usually, game play doesn't have the cannon bouncing off the shield nor do you need to return to the left side to turn it on. Eating a shield cell or touching the dormant Qotile turns it on.
It's simple. Avoid the pinwheel, avoid the blocky thing, the rainbow grid thing protects you from the blocky thing but not the pinwheel and also doesn't let you shoot, the rainbow thing in the back is how you attack the pinwheel in the middle of all the orange bricks, and it's activated by either touching the pinwheel when it's not a pinwheel or bumping into one of the orange bricks.
I'm guessing this is the PAL version based on how slow it is running. Playing back the video at 125% speed shows what the NTSC version is like, it's crazy fast at times.
Atari was before my time, but I played this on the Atari 50th Anniversary collection. It's actually a pretty fun game once you figure out what you're supposed to do. I just wish it had more than two infinitely repeating levels!
