I bought a Veloster N a month ago. Tried the civic type R, drove a GTI rabbit but no Golf R. Honestly, on the road the veloster was far and away the most engaging to drive. Civic type R was great but the dealer wanted 38k for the civic and 28k for the N. The civic just wasn’t worth the extra 10k to me. For 33k it would have been a serious contender though cause I loved the seats and driving position. N is better than GTI, no contest.

Nice video. Here’s my take: The Type R is absolutely ridiculous, it’s not even fair on the track, but the styling is out of control haha. I’m jealous that the United States won’t get the i30N, I know the Veloster N is essentially the same thing, but the Veloster isn’t anywhere near as practical as the i30... The interior of the Hyundai is definitely lacking, but again, it’s the price point, they put the money into the performance, not the luxury. Then the Golf R, the most sophisticated, laid back hot hatch there is. I personally like the way the Golf looks, but the track performance isn’t top tier anymore, same with the GTI at that. However, what it lacks in pure track shredding, it makes up for in the most comfortable cabin and the most presentable exterior you’re going to find in this segment. It’s the only car you can show up to your girlfriends parents house in, yet still be able to walk most vehicles on the road with. Depending on what your goals are, these cars will serve them perfectly without breaking the bank too much. If you want the best bang for your buck with performance, get the N line, if you want a track ripper that will burn anything in its path, get the Type R, if you want to be a grown up with some speed, get the Golf.
All that said, can we get an F in the chat for the Focus RS (and ST)? Lol

Look, some of you have laughed at Hyundai for a long time. Meanwhile, as an "old head", I have been doing my research. Since the beginning of this century, Hyundai has been slowly and quietly working it's way into the lineup with top-name car companies. They have their own foundry, and they also spent almost 200 million on metallurgy. I first bought a brand new top-of-the-line Sonata back in 2006. It had the 3.3 liter V6 that was pushing 237hp. It even had a sport-shift feature, but it would only make the shifts near redline. It could and would beat a base 525 BMW that had 227 hp. The ex traded it in with almost 140,000 miles, and it still ran like brand new. I currently have a Accent GLS as my daily driver. That one is about to turn 200,00 miles. It doesn't burn oil and it runs like a top. Due to the mileage, it was time to renew suspension, timing belt, and ignition parts. Now it's read for another 100,000 miles. I am currently at adding another high-performance compact to the garage, and all three of these cars are on the list. The bang for the buck is the N. Plus, if I want to void my warranty, I can do a few minor upgrades with the money saved, and beat BOTH the other cars. Don't sleep on Hyundai.

Back suspensions just broke on all 3 of them one was my sister's, an other my cousins and last one was one my friends accent. The R's AWD advantage disappears when exiting a corner when compared to a GTI with similar power and an LSD. If you're brave enough to void your warranty and install a wave track LSD on the Golf R it will hang with the Type R and Hyundai with ease.

Today's cars simply don't rust out the way cars did 20-30yrs ago. When is the last time you saw a 'rust bucket' on the road. My last car after 10 yrs and 370,000km had a small patch of rust on the upper door frame of the drivers door and a few pin pricks of rust on the hood that were created by rock chips. And to add to that I live in Canada (lots of road salt use) and had the car washed ..maybe 4 times over the 10 yrs. Moral of the story... Don't waste your money!

An engine tune is not going to make the Golf R handle better! You need to rework the swaybars, the dampers, the springs, wider wheels, the R doesn't have the aero (the splitter & rear wing) which the GTI Clubsport has, you need the Recaros from the GTI Clubsport too -- it's a lot more than a retune needed to bring the Golf R up to spec.

Put a bigger anti sway bar on the rear, now the car is perfectly neutral, going very fast in tight turns, with nose turn in off throttle. Completely transformed the car. It just needs about 100 more horse power because it is really heavy. Really like that Civic Type R though.
