I work in medical imaging and I remember learning about this case in school. Po-210 emits alpha radiation (essentially a helium atom), which really doesn't need the kind of shielding you'd think it does. In fact, Po-210 in particular can't penetrate skin from the outside. It wouldn't have set off any detectors because a plastic vial would be enough to shield it. Once ingested, the body itself serves as adequate shielding (which is probably why the doctors didn't catch it until right before he died) while causing massive internal damage to soft tissues and wiping out white blood cells. It's not a pleasant way to go.
Alpha radiation also can't travel further than a few centremetres, meaning that only a specific small area would be intensely radiated. It's actually in smoke detectors lol.
I lived right near where Litvinenko lived during his poisoning. I was 7 at the time, and my dad picked me up from school, but we came across multiple TV vans, police, people in hazmat suits and even a helicopter on our way home. We switched on the TV and saw my dad’s car on the screen and we soon figured out it was a spy poisoning. The house was blocked off by a tent and then something else for the next 4 years, with a note from the court beside the door ordering prohibition on trespassing the radioactive house. Since then it was only occupied for a year or two, but ended up empty most of the time. Spooky.
Need to clear up some stuff on radiation poisoning around 09:12-- Polonium 210 is a radioisotope that undergoes alpha decay. Alpha particles themselves are relatively harmless because they're physically massive and don't travel well through dense material; they slow down (use up their energy) before they can really go anywhere. In that way, you can hold Polonium 210 in your hand because your skin is thick enough to stop alpha particles (and a handshake would be no issue for the same reason). Alpha radiation becomes problematic when ingested because--similarly to how it can't pass skin from the outside--it can't leave the inside of the body once consumed. It's a high energy particle, so all that energy is now on the inside, ripping electrons from its environment (in this case, the cells of the body).
The particle has a charge, in the case of alpha radiation, it's positive (specifically the nucleus of a helium atom). Positive attracts negative, and because alpha particles are of unbalanced positive charge, they rapidly combine (by pulling from other atoms) with negative charges to create helium. The atoms the alpha particle pulls electrons from lose two electrons to balance the charge; for organic systems this causes significant damage.

Why did these guys expect to find a chef that would poison food? Did they just flip through the yellow pages calling every restaurant in town trying to find a murderous chef??? #boogaraguitara #longlivethehotdaga
Great questions... It is likely that this was no ordinary chef and I'm pretty sure the FSB would have been able to contact a local (russian) chef and kindly ask him to help out with an order, possibly an order by the President. Most likely this person was someone who was smart enough to not involve himself in this matter and who knew not to speak about his orders given by the russians because if he did...well, he would have gotten burned.
7:46 I'm studying Chemistry, and even though I'm an undergraduate, I can say that it would definetly not glow. However, it may have tasted metalic or smeeled odd, maybe even the tea would look to be very hot/steamy, more then a usual cup of tea; like a kettle that blows out alot of steam.
For the postmortem: NOT A QUESTION BUT PLEASE LET SHANE EXPLAIN THE PEOPLE IN FRANCE WHO DANCED TILL THE DIED! Oh and love you guys! #shaniac #OnlyAboogaraOnTheWeekends
Technically it’s the FSB, though the KGB technically exists in Belarus so you’re not 100% wrong. They’re a strong ally of Russia so they could, in theory, kill them because Russia could suggest they do that. That is of course, if Russia did poising Litvinenko. Poor guy either way. What a nasty way to go.

Daniel Gower I was about 9 when I saw this on the tv. Spooked me out, especially when they showed photos of him lying in the bed sick. In comparison to his photo of him when he’s well, honestly it’s hard to believe it’s the same man. Even I noticed that when I was 9. Also it is good to see UK content on the channel. Probably my fave case they’ve covered and I thought it was well done. Keep up the good work lads 👍🏻
Shane's joke about the "ooze-long" tea and his reference to the Keystone Cops (which are from the silent movie era, btw) just confirms in my mind that Shane is either from the past, or he's secretly youthful forever and he's actually 120 years old! Which I'm totally okay with :)
A little bit of a Greek story for ya; Tantalus was invited to Olympus by the gods for a feast. He asked to bring some ambrosia and nectar (food and drink of the gods) home to study it, but they refused. He invitd them to his home for food sometime aftr, and served them a soup that had the chopped up remains of his children in it. When they realized, they killed him and sentenced him to the fields of punishment; he would stand in a lake, a fruit tree over his head. When he tried to grab a fruit, the tree would move out of reach; when he tried to get water, the water would move away from him. Thus comes the word 'tantalizing'.
I strongly dislike the idea of the word "tantalising" coming from a myth in which children are murdered and eaten by the will of their own father. I love myths but I might have to removed that world from ye olde vocabulary
It’s actually been said that he noticed the bitter taste of the tea once the two men had left - at that point it was too late anyway. Even if he’d known what he’d taken, his death was inevitable from that point. The poor guy, death by radiation poisoning is slow and excruciating
I remember reading a Time article about this when it happened, which led to a couple years where I was terrified of being poisoned by FSB agents. Though as a teenager in Michigan who had no intel on anything involving Russia, I was probably pretty low on their "to do" list.

the way shane said he wanted to live for ever was kinda creepy, proof Shane’s a demon part 7,561,324. #boogara
Allie Mulder Shane can’t fool us
I can’t blame Shane.I mean I think it would be nice to see the planet evolve. Its some what calming in a way.
Wild child 2.0 0906 haha true but the way his voice sounded
Allie Mulder alright I can agree with that.
Duh of course he is
"tantalizing" describes something desirable that's just out of reach, named for Tantalus in greek mythology
The myth where Tantalus could see food and water but cannot reach it to eat or drink? I haven't read Greek mythology explicitly but I have read the Percy Jackson series lol thanks for making me remember it. Have a great day!
so Shane was closer to its meaning than Ryan was
You guys should definitely do the death of Princess Diana!! I feel like so many theories are out there about what really happened like if she was murdered. Great video as always!!!
OMG THAT WOULD BE SO GOOD! IM PRETTY SURE THE ROYAL FAMILY MURDERED HER. This murder was so sad :(
She was murdered I'm pretty sure. Didn't they also then go and do recent investigations? Our usernames are so similar. LMAO
i think we all know john mulaney was the true murderer
Ang S. To be honest, I'm surprised they haven't done her case yet!
I mean her death isn’t really ‘unsolved’, it’s been ruled as an accident. It’s more of a conspiracy theory than anything else
“Do you want some ooz-long tea?”
England officially has a terrible track record for protecting Russian defectors against assassins.
Tiger H. Lore don't say about a city like that
Livin MƏMƏ too late.
Wait so was the cook actually contacted to put poison in the food and the cook was like "yeah no, can't do that," but didn't bother to report this to the police or to warn Litvenenko he was going to get poisoned??
Les Coronado probably because he feared for his life and the lives of his loved ones.
The cook was not a fool. He knew that he and all his family would be killed
They're friends and he was loyal to the Russian government, I guess.
Watching this again after Alexei Navalny, a Putin critic, was poisoned with a nerve agent.
same
Then they arrested him
@@weedwhacker287 Anybody could've seen that coming from a mile away, I have no idea why he went back to Russia so soon. It's a shame. Russia is nothing but a dictatorship.
The whole original poisoning was a huge Putin flex! This was a purposeful message. And the poisonings continue without any repercussions. A huge public global warning that you are never beyond their reach if you threaten them.
And they probably did it again, he died about two weeks ago as of me writing this
I literally count down the days until a new episode! you guys should do an episode finale that’s like 40 minutes long.
abby kennedy traitor to mother Russia.
abby kennedy NO FINALES
I wouldn't complain tbh 😂
Hopefully there will be no finales
Polonium 210 actually looks similar to copper or tanned bronze in a solid state, but ground up it looks almost exactly like a lump or sugar or salt.
DJ BassMic this explains why he didn't noticed
It's easy to mix up sugar and salt....and radioactive poison....good to know
So if you’re doing crack you could easily poison someone. Or you’re a drug dealer.
And in liquid form it looks like a water
It would be crazy that this happened just 12 years ago if a Russian poisoning hadn’t JUST happened again earlier this year. It’s like a bloody film.
That's what I thought this video was going to be about. I was just like "isnt this still a bit controversial to make this kind of video on?"
I thought it was the one that recently happened and was just kinda like "Why?"
σмg gσт 666 ℓιкєѕ
What does this say?
DrShocktopus So far as I can tell, your statement is not true at all, and in fact, during the investigation, the specific isotope used to kill him was traced back to a Russian reactor by physicist Norman Dombey. Can you provide links to back up your assertion?
Ryan: "You don't think that the British government would endanger their own citizens like that."
British Prime Minister on Covid: "Let the bodies pile up."
“Let’s all have a party at number ten as everyone else is sacrificed for the economy huzzah”
Agreed, but I don’t think we’ve ever had a government quite like this one.
Pathetic comparison. You’re seriously comparing a ʟᴇɢɪᴛ serial killer with someone you don’t agree with politically being irresponsible? Mind you - all the guests of the party were there of ᴛʜᴇɪʀ ᴏᴡɴ ғʀᴇᴇ ᴡɪʟʟ. But congrats - you managed to win the “petty w/o arguments” Labour Party member award… :)
@@emeliem3190 I mean, this video wasn't about a serial killer (legit or otherwise) and I mentioned nothing about parties as it didn't relate to the quote so thanks for trying but better luck on the next Bojo-critical comment you decide you're outraged with. 🙂
Shane's depiction of the word tantalizing is so spot on 😂😂😂
RIGHT?!
"We cracked it!......bye." Shane is the best.
Brandy Myers I read this as soon as he said it 😂

Litvinenko: a man who solved his own murder
Navalny: hold my beer
It's crazy how all this happened 10 year or less ago. I hope they do more modern crimes like this
I'm pretty sure that 2006 wasn't "10 years or less ago".
It was 12 years ago
Many of the investigations took place after 2006, though guys. He probably meant the investigations themselves not the deaths.
Dear Buzzfeed Unsolved,
Please do an episode on the Lake Bodom murders. They... they're... _strange_ ...
Fun fact, I went camping at that lake last week
How... did you italicize that?
@@p_eppermint you italicize using underscores!! _hi_ !!
Thanks~

FOR THE POSTMORTEM: Will you guys ever let shane present a unsolved case? I feel like he would have a weird one

Let’s get Shane to host the entire episode it would be amazing

Mr Putin, if you're watching this, please tell us: are you Boogara or Shaniac?
😂😂😂
I think Putin would be a shaniac
I have trouble imagining Putin believing in ghosts.
Realistically Vladimir Putin is probably a #shaniac but I really want him to be a #boogara.
Oh definitely Shaniac. No ghost can scare Putin but in fact Putin scares ghosts.
Best part of Friday tbh

I remember this, it happened in Salisbury. For all the exiled wealthy Russians living in the UK, over 40 of them have died on UK soil ‘suspiciously’
no, that was a different time!! his name was sergei skripal and his daughter yulia in 2018 in salisbury
this happened in london

you would think that the chef might try to tip the guy off though? like "uh hey, those two shady guys just tried to pay me to poison you, watch out bro"????
Genevieve Barnes then he puts himself at risk to get hurt/killed by them
They would’ve killed the chef if he snitched
They said the chef wasn't there.
Snitches get stitches...or just oozelong tea
tessa marie oozelong tea 😂😂
"i am also sure that they did this with the intention of poisoning mr. litvinenko"
why else would you put radioactive isotopes in someones tea? as a birthday present? 💀

Haven’t watched it all but..we know it’s good.
ofc!
we all know...

Nightmare Files I love your channel. To me it is one of the hidden gems of UA-cam.
Nightmare Files I can’t like it because it’s at 969
Why did these guys expect to find a chef that would poison food? Did they just flip through the yellow pages calling every restaurant in town trying to find a murderous chef??? #boogaraguitara #longlivethehotdaga
Allie Labrecque and why did they let the chef go? He could have told someone about what he was asked
I live and Russia and I confirm it was Putin.
That's a joke, FSB, please, don't arrest me
nonbinary royalty they won’t, they’ll just kill you
@Florides BB you clearly don't know Russia lmao
@burnhuman_2 nah don't think so, do you all really think Russia is some kind of a weird alien place living without laws?
Arrest is the last thing you have to worry about Because they were arrest you they would kill you
See you @ the gulag.
For the postmortem: NOT A QUESTION BUT PLEASE LET SHANE EXPLAIN THE PEOPLE IN FRANCE WHO DANCED TILL THE DIED! Oh and love you guys! #shaniac #OnlyAboogaraOnTheWeekends
IF SHANE AND RYAN DONT COME OUT WITH ANOTHER UNSOLVED EPISODE NEXT WEEK BLAME THE KGB
well the videos are all pre-recorded, they have the entire season already.
DADWC last season then 😂
It is FSB now. But for real, Russian citizens are the only one that suffer from Russian government. So no worries for Shane and Ryan.
The most impressive part of this video is the fact that Ryan correctly pronounced all the Russian names
But can't pronounce "Putin."

Shane was so relatable in this episode “just watch the universe implode”
I'm from the UK I was 8 when he was killed I remember seeing him on the news I've always wondered why he was killed, thanks guys for doing uk based content
I was 9 months old 🤭
I was 11 and can't believe I remember this so vividly.
I was -3 months old lol
It's weird re-watching this now lol
10:03 this is why we need a podcast with these two talking about the universe and everything actually
Shane's joke about the "ooze-long" tea and his reference to the Keystone Cops (which are from the silent movie era, btw) just confirms in my mind that Shane is either from the past, or he's secretly youthful forever and he's actually 120 years old! Which I'm totally okay with :)
"You didn't poison this did you?"
"I wish I did now"
God I love their chemistry. So natural.
Did you read that in Percy Jackson, too.
Wtf
The water moves away from him?? Why didn't he just use this as a way of getting out...
I strongly dislike the idea of the word "tantalising" coming from a myth in which children are murdered and eaten by the will of their own father. I love myths but I might have to removed that world from ye olde vocabulary
I have read this story because of PJ series horaay
Craig gonna getcha.

Extra fun times for Ryan trying to pronounce Finnish names lmao.
It’s actually been said that he noticed the bitter taste of the tea once the two men had left - at that point it was too late anyway. Even if he’d known what he’d taken, his death was inevitable from that point. The poor guy, death by radiation poisoning is slow and excruciating
“You didn’t poison this, did you?
I wish I did now”
LOL😂

I remember reading a Time article about this when it happened, which led to a couple years where I was terrified of being poisoned by FSB agents. Though as a teenager in Michigan who had no intel on anything involving Russia, I was probably pretty low on their "to do" list.
