When I look at Manaoh. As a Cubs fan, I think of him like Mark Prior. Started off strong before he started collapsing. But injuries aren’t the cause. It’s his way of pitching since he’s falling off. HARD.
His collapse to me looks like an amalgamation of three things: weight, pitch clock, and mentality. Weight: There are some videos on UA-cam doing side-by-side comparisons of 2022 and 2023 Manoah. Those usually try to decipher his mechanics, but it's clear that in the offseason, he gained what looks like 25-30 lbs. At every single one of his starts this year, his jersey gets absolutely drenched with sweat by the 2nd inning and his body is working extra hard to try and do the same thing. Pitch Clock: This plays in conjunction to the weight, but up until last year, Manoah could throw a pitch, stepped off and took as much time as he wanted to catch his breath and plan his next pitch. He was known in the league to be one of the pitchers with the longest time between pitches. With that and 25-30 lbs less weight to carry mechanically, 100 pitches was no problem for him. Now it absolutely is, and with only 15-20 seconds between pitches, he's not able to catch his breath and it catches up to him very quickly. Has to start battling his own stamina against thinking of his mechanics and just delivering the pitch. Mentality: And finally, the big one. Manoah absolutely spent too much time being aggressively chirpy and competitive, making enemies across the league instead of being humble that he essentially got a fast track into the majors. He never really got to face any real adversity like a drastically changing league and the falloff that a lot of players eventually face. He's facing it now, and it's likely getting to him a lot more than others because of his intense competitiveness and just young age. Honestly, I think Manoah comes back. However, I don't think 2023 is that year for it. He should be sent a message by the Blue Jays that his command is a problem and unreliable in the majors, and that his weight is something they have to address as a contributor. Imagine if he was put on a strict diet/training regiment and in the meantime, allowed to still hold a spot in the AAA league with the promise of coming back next year. He could still get constant exposure to the pitch clock and actually tangibly see how a weight loss helps with mechanics and stamina. It's either that, or the Jays give up on him and either trade or DFA him, which would be a waste in my opinion. However, with his command and confidence still only being at around 60% after the minors stint, he's at high risk of plunking batters (especially the dangerous incidents like Ward today) and imploding against really good teams.
It’s because he’s hefty - look across the league: bigger pitchers are having a terrible year because the pitch clock exposes their lack of cardio. They used to get a minute in between pitches, now they get 20 seconds.
I mean, the big thing is teams just stopped swinging. Manoah threw almost 52% of his pitches outside the zone last year which was the 23rd highest rate in MLB. But hitters chased them, he had a chase rate in the top 30% of MLB and an overall swing rate was the 20th best in MLB, so it worked. This year, guys stopped swinging. His swing rate went from 49% last year to 44% this year and his chase rate fell from the top 30% in MLB to the bottom 25%. Even just watching this video see how many slider and 2 seamers he throws outside the zone that guys just watch for a ball.
This is starting to remind me of Jarrett Wright back in the 1998 playoff game 1 against the Yankees where he said he's gonna cut the Yankees down only to get chased out in the first inning
Then he pitched for them and got clocked in the head with 110mph of exit velo. I'll never forget Michael Kay saying that Wright was "gunna hurl from that jaw full of chaw." LOL
It's good that he's getting humbled. Clearly he needs it. But his mic'd up inning in the ASG last year was one of the great inside baseball windows ever.
This is what happens when you get cocky. Maybe when he becomes more humble, he'll be able to achieve his once great status. I can't stand cocky players, and I love it when they get handed some reality. He's young, so hopefully he'll get better at it.

Ever since Game 1 against the Mariners, he has been a completely different player compared to past seasons. He’s gotta have the yips or something similar? Whatever it is, hope he can figure it out.
Again young man great video!!!!! Alex will be fine, his problem is he is to aggressive, he is in the zone entirely to long. Alex has to get back to working batters, start off with balls to see the batters mindset, If he swings at a ball then you can set him up the rest of the at bat. If he takes throw a strike and follow it up with another ball to see where his mind is. It’s definitely not his stuff, it’s clearly his mindset. The days of just blowing hitters away has past, hell Adam Frazier has 8 homers already last year he hit 3. So who ever is his pitching coach should be fired because if you just sit back and watch his pitch sequence you clearly see him in the zone to long.
We all have good days and bad days… just because he is not on his game we shouldn’t criticize him… he will come back he is still young relax everyone!!!
Couldn't have happened to a better guy from what I've seen around all the other team podcasts the guy was a bully and a loudmouth, it does the mind body and soul good to see a-holes get their comeuppance you know that saying "the bigger they are..."
The Jays did put him in Triple A or Florida Rookie complex but he’s been so brutal to watch this year and it’s only a matter of time before the Blue Jays don’t make the postseason the batters are okay but the bullpen hasn’t been what they expected
I want to see him answer the adversity. As much as I didn’t like him being a Yankees fan. What he brought to baseball was good for the game. He’s still young, let him figure it out
While it would probably be wrong to blame his collapse as being due to his obvious obesity, fat people in general are fat because of certain habits. These habits include laziness, low self-control, etc.
It was a huge mistake to start him game 1 in playoff last year, I said it before the game too. Gausman was their battled tested Ace, not Manoah. He choked and then they go and make him the open day starter, and again he choked. And it was downhill since those 2 outings. Now would things be different if Jays didn't put him in those big spots, probably not but maybe. His confidence was destroyed. I'm not sure he will ever make it back but anything is possible. He is a great pitcher when he's on and confident but do think there's some mental hurdles he's gotta get over among other things.
You see guys lose their swing throughout the course of a PGA tour season and regain it, pitching is no different. Dudes arm angle could be off an inch or his lead foot could be landing at the wrong spot. If it’s not an injury, it’s a mechanical issue, which is no reason to throw dirt on the guy already lol.
Despite the bad luck with Manoah having a bad year, the Jays did luck out that this year both Kikuchi and Berrios have stepped up from really struggling last year. And Gausman is still Gausman. And Bassitt has been mostly solid. Sucks to see someone of Manoah's talent struggle like this, but hopefully the Jays pitching staff will be able to hold down the fort till he gets his head on straight, and hopefully it doesn't take so long that the season ends up a wash. Cause it has been rough on and off.
How could I guy go from being the Ace of the staff for going to the minors is less then a year. Makes no sense. Could it be psychological. Remember Steve Blass. He was a very good pitcher lost his confidence and he never ever regained it and his career was over.

It’s the opposite. The bullpen and starters are fine but they are the worst team at hitting with runners in scoring position
He got sent to tge Florida Rookie League and pitched like he belongs in a t ball league He would pitch great there.
The pitch timer is messing him up
I want to see him answer the adversity. As much as I didn’t like him being a Yankees fan. What he brought to baseball was good for the game. He’s still young, let him figure it out
Bro that guy said manoah is the best pitcher in the al east, did he forget about Shane
Everyone slumps. Manoah will bounce back and be in at least one more Cy Young race. Mark those words.
This ain’t a slump
@@VllBezZ Slump or an off season. He will be fine. It's a slump.
@@johnisouth6636allowing 11 runs in a rookie level game ain’t no slump
@@jacob7099 Well finishing 3rd in a Cy Young race ain't no chump. 11 runs ain't good but I bet he learns from it.
@@johnisouth6636 a slump is having bad outing in the majors not allowing 11 runs in rookie ball
We've seen flash in the pans many many times before. Maybe he comes back, maybe he doesn't. It happens. What are you gonna do?🤷🏿♂️
Brotha made the game entertaining. Can’t wait for him to bounce back!
1:08 three of the biggest CLOWNS in all of baseball
This….puts a smile on my face
Bro, i had this dude as my cy young
While it would probably be wrong to blame his collapse as being due to his obvious obesity, fat people in general are fat because of certain habits. These habits include laziness, low self-control, etc.
Manure was hella vocal last year…
Confidence is everything in sports if you have it you’re great if you don’t you look ordinary
Couldn't have happened to a more likeable player
Damn, who would’ve predicted.
When I first read the video title, I thought it said, "The insanely FUNNY collapse of Alec Minoa"
I'd argue its a slump and not a "collapse". Somethings gotta be going on behind the scenes.
Man he was so good
Headcase
How could I guy go from being the Ace of the staff for going to the minors is less then a year. Makes no sense. Could it be psychological. Remember Steve Blass. He was a very good pitcher lost his confidence and he never ever regained it and his career was over.
I remember him bullying a reporter who apologized numerous times never felt him after that
the pitch clocked screwed him up
@JS-dh1qgAnd his big stomach.
I was at the Manoahs last Houston start. It was so sad to watch
