I just feel he was a young pitcher who was already a superstar just 1 full year in, and he let it get to his head and thought the game was too easy for him, which led to him showing up to camp way out of shape
Multiple reasons. Believed his own hype and came in overweight, sure. But also, he may have had dead arm after pitching almost 200 innings last year, something he'd never done before. Was rushed to the bigs in 2021 by a team desperate for starting pitching, and he never got a chance to pitch a full season in Triple A and acclimate his arm.

But I’ve lost a lot of respect for him for not reporting, and I think that goes for a lot of other Jays fans too. I want to see him succeed, but if he’s trying to avoid the work to succeed, it becomes hard to like him even as a Jays fan
I'm in the same boat. I loved him too. Then the decline happened, and he didn't want to do what was needed to fix it. I was at the home opener this season. The FIRST thing I noticed was he gained ALOT of weight compared to last season. I personally think that extra weight screwed up his pitching mechanics. Your body moves totally different to adjust to the added weight/fat on his body. Which to me said he expected to coast along this season strictly on his talents, without putting in any work. That ended up being totally true, based on what he is doing now. If he doesn't come back next season leaner and thinner, Jays need to seriously consider getting rid of him. He needs to show everyone he put in the effort to gain that respect back from the organization and fans.
I think he didn't report because he needs a mental break, things didn't go remotely well all season and when he hit Taylor Ward in the face it made things worse. He'll be back he's a fierce competitor
He was INJURED & they said he wasn't 🙄 And now turns out he was & is getting shots in his shoulder! Shame on anyone stupid enough to eat up the press leaks/bs without knowing anything 🙄
The biggest thing holding him back right now is ego. Refusing to report to triple A tells us everything we need to know about the person Alek Manoah. Talked all kinds of shit when things were going his way. Takes his ball and goes home when it got tough and accountability had to be taken.
if he really weights 320 pounds then that is a complete answer to what went wrong. He's 25 years old and has access to the best training and nutrition programs.
One simple reason Manoah got bad, other than the drama. He got fatter, a lot bigger. He's the 2nd biggest pitcher outside Lance Lynn now. That affects his mechanics, leading to more walks. Then due to the lack of performance, his head got in the way.
I agree. Nothing wrong w bigger pitchers either. Look at Clemens(i dont know if the roids made him look heftier) but could also mention Nolan ryan… he was also hefty. But they worked out their legs… you can tell manoah doesn’t do legs. He could trim maybe 10-20 lbs and still be good. He looks like a bowling ball on two twigs
If he was actually resting physically between pitches instead of just mentally focusing then I think the pitch clock was definitely a huge factor that likely caused his mechanics to get out of whack.
Problem with pitch clock argument is he's also struggled in the first inning when he was fresh. I'm sure pitch clock plays a role but not the main one.
It should be noted that Alek Manoah and Roy Halladay had contrasting careers as of now. Halladay, a HOF pitcher wasn’t great from a get go. He was terrible in 2000 with 10+ ERA and demoted to single A. But he showed his determination with new mechanics and stuffs. And eventually, he became one of the most dominant pitchers in that generation.
Not reporting to AAA made me lose respect. Being given an opportunity to get better and just not wanting to put in the work due to an inflated ego is not ok and should be met with the realization that playing in the MLB is a privilege.
Yeah that was a bad look. I'm chalking everything he's done this year as 'bad year, mind was not right from start to finish.' Hopefully he has a new attitude (and body) next year, I'd give him another chance, he's earned it.
I'm guessing it's personal as well. We'll never know. Whatever the cause, he has to lose weight in offseason, find his footing and rediscover the slider.
I was sitting a few rows back of the plate on Manoah’s brutal start vs the Astros. I was so hyped and then it all went down the drain like 5 minutes after the game started
i love alek manoah, he was thier ace pitcher in 2022, 2021, wanted to make headaway forward when their wasnt really any other toronto pitcher to step up, haters gonna hate brate, your awesome, be yourself.
As a Jays fan, there’s a few things at play here that we’ve seen. First is conditioning, he packed on a lot of weight, each pitch looked like a chore out of the gate. He was built like an offensive lineman, not a top of the rotation starter. Second, there’s quite a bit of this that is mental. He got very cocky, and he hadn’t really payed his dues or earned the right. This is a kid who had around 33innings pitched in the minors before becoming an everyday player. He got humbled by the Mariners but the Blue Jays media up here still put him on a pedestal. He has an attitude problem and a conditioning problem. He needs to fully commit to self improvement during the off season, if not, he will become a fart in the wind like Kyle Drabek or Aaron Sanchez.
Overall good video, but you’re wrong about the concern about Manoah after his start in rookie ball. That level is not about winning games, it’s about getting command and working out mechanics. It was more important for them to see him hitting spots than it was for him to prevent hits and runs. And this isn’t just my opinion, Trevor Plouffe said this on one of the Jomboy podcasts.
Bro you can't be a cy young finalists and then give up 10 runs to a bunch of dudes right of high school the next year. Working on mechanics whatever a pitcher of his caliber should be able to strike out nearly every batter at that level without trying
@@User-b9q2z bro, you’re missing the point of assigning a player to that level. Don’t ask me, ask the former MLB player who played at that level AND the majors. I didn’t want to believe it either, I’m a Yankee fan, I don’t like manoah
Yeah, they told him to just throw it in the zone in that game. Perhaps they had him do that if hitting Ward in the face with a pitch had gotten into his head. Alek looked a whole lot better in his AAA games after that.
The weight gain plus pitch clock was a double whammy for manoah... Drop 40 pounds, at least, and the mechanics will come back... Alek, heres your new mantra, "if it tastes good, spit it out!"

The biggest cause. You hit it. He didn't act like a professional in the offseason by working on his craft. He ate, drank, got fat and thought he could just show up in spring training and just pick up where he left off in 2022. The refusal to report to the minors shows a real attitude problem to go with it. He also does not have a contract for 2024. He was a dirt cheap commodity at $745,000 on a one year contract for 2023. I wouldn't be surprised if the Jays release him outright in the offseason.
He’s young and has gone from first to worst. He has no idea what do because nothing is working. I think stopping for now is a good thing. Too much analysis followed by failure is difficult for anyone. Relax, reflect, refresh, and try again.
Jays fan, this is the first I’ve heard about him not reporting and being shutdown. Based on that with his performance, I have a feeling he won’t pitch for the jays ever again. Whether he can become that All-Star pitcher again for some other organization, really just depends on him.
Looking back at those clips of the time he took between pitches and how he seemed out of air. For sure it was his overweight and the pitch clock. Plus his attitude was the nail in his coffin. Only time will tell if he can make a 180° change

Alek is in a tight spot and they want him to be more muscular, so he's vulnerable to make some bad decisions if MLB doesn't make it clear testing is coming back next year. Otherwise, Alek might come back with all that fat gone and a ton of new muscle, winning the CY Young, comeback player of the year, and pitching triple crown, and MLB will just turn their heads like they did in the 90s.

Their is zero reason for Acuna to be up there with belinger and Yellich. Completely different situations. what happened to Alex Manoah is very similar to what Happened to Rick Vaughn in Major League 2. He got away from himself and his mechanics and thought he was better than the game. Baseball gods don't like that at all. Baseball has always been about baseball. You throw the ball, you catch the ball you hit the ball. Manaoh also added to his size (he was already a big boy to begin with) and so that also adds to the wrong mechanics for pitching and velocity.
As a Jays fan this has been the most painful season to watch in years, from inconsistencies, disgraceful offensse considering the talent, and just overall more drama than there needs to be. Especially Manoah, he went from Obsessed documentary, to Obsessed about refusing to play for Buffalo. I honestly don’t want this team to make October. I want to see an organizational panic, to see either Atkins, Schneider or Martinez gone in the off-season. we still don't know the bottom line for Alek. Maybe we never will. Whatever it is he's got a lot of potential and he's also very young. I hope he gets stuff sorted out to be the best he can be!
Weight, attitude, work ethic - you pick 'em but he was rushed to the mlb and like a lot of pitchers who blaze early - he flared out. The woods are full of failed arms just like him. Drafted high schoolers, minor league leap froggers, busted out phenoms. If you don't climb the ladder one rung at a time you better be a superstar. Alek isn't.
He got a taste of popularity and thinks he's Nolan Ryan. He's a 1x all star, and sure, has potential to be a legend, but that respect is earned in time. When he's 33 and earned back to back cy youngs, then he can coast. But he needs to not follow the trend of some of these younger players like Tatis and Soto because when they slip up like Tatis, they don't have a long history to show they've earned respect. If he humbled himself, I'd probably be a huge fan, but he's cocky and has no problem pegging batters to send a message.
3:40 I’m a Yankee fan. Him shutting out the ‘23 Yankees isn’t an accomplishment. The offense is so bad I think I could get a few Ks with my 56 mph fastball. Also, I think they brought him down to the FCL because it’s near their ST base and wanted to work on his mechanics sounds bad getting demoted to Rookie league but makes sense from a Facilities perspective.
Emotional maturity and intelligence of a 10 year old + grossly overweight lover of Golden Corral dinner buffets = flash in the pan Ricky Romano kid brother!:( His trade value is rock-bottom right now, Jays aren't going to just release or waive him for nothing > don't expect the team to do Manurah any career favors here either!
He wasn’t even there for the camp season at the start of the year. Probably was partying and getting drunk , explaining why he can’t pitch, no practice
Im sure the Jays want him to succeed but he doesnt seem like the proper fit in the Jays organization. He should talk to Ryu and train with him in the off season instead of worrying about what tattoos to get.
I have no clue why he's behaved as he has but I would be surprised if his stock in the MLB will ever head into bull territory ever again. Aren't there a ton of capable ball players just chomping at the bit to get their chance in the majors ? Why take a chance on a guy with authority and ego issues ?
He needs to: 1. Drop the lbs. like down under 260. 2. Get a consistent workout plan. 3. He has the stuff and ability now hone each pitch in with command. 4. And shut the hell up. Let your pitching to the talking. His mouth should be full of humble pie for awhile anyways. If he does these things he could easily go out and dominate the league for 10 years, but its up to him.
i always believe karma is exist. before the season starts he is cocky keep messing with other baseball player and get cooked. deserved it tbh, hope learn his lesson
Flip him. 26 is old enough to know better. But if he sees Vlad get away with only having to try hard to cut weight and come to spring training in "better" condition than last year. Sure give him a bloody rotation spot.
Cruel, cruel, cruel Your posted picture with the word Garbage in front of a player's picture with only your opinion vs all the facts is just plain cruel. Some people think it'll be the Rays but I don't think they'd be willing at this point, they can flip players who don't blow off their teams instead. 26 may be young for an MLB pitcher but it's getting old for someone who needs to prove he deserves to be there.
what happened to Alex Manoah is very similar to what Happened to Rick Vaughn in Major League 2.
He let himself go to fat-shit, in the off-season, much like Kirk and Guererro
As a Jays fan this has been the most painful season to watch in years, from inconsistencies, disgraceful offensse considering the talent, and just overall more drama than there needs to be. Especially Manoah, he went from Obsessed documentary, to Obsessed about refusing to play for Buffalo. I honestly don’t want this team to make October. I want to see an organizational panic, to see either Atkins, Schneider or Martinez gone in the off-season. I am so sick of the sports misery I Toronto extending to the Leafs, the Jays doing this to me is the last thing I need mentally.
You're focussing on the negative. Bounce back seasons from Berrios and Kikuchi have been good storylines. Bo, Davis Schneider.
@@kermitfrog593 honestly even despite being solid, this team was supposed to be on the level as Baltimore or Atlanta at this point. There have been positives, the rotation is elite and I love Babe, but my God I don’t think we can play against real opponents in October if we fail to score runs.
@@a18yearoldonyoutubeluigi I mean, big picture? Sure, who can argue with that. I've hated Shatkins's results, especially after driving out AA and seeing what he's done elsewhere.
@@kermitfrog593that’s the most frustrating thing. Rogers doesn’t understand winning, they haven’t since buying the organization.
@@a18yearoldonyoutubeluigi Rogers understands that if you control the media, you can convince fans of anything. Like a wild card team being a world series contender.
The pitch clock really screwed him up and as a Jays fan you could tell
we still don't know the bottom line for Alek. Maybe we never will. Whatever it is he's got a lot of potential and he's also very young. I hope he gets stuff sorted out to be the best he can be!
He really seems like someone who let the star athlete lifestyle dominate him.
I think he is done
and I won't miss him
he had a great season, started talking shit in the offseason, had a bad first couple outings and it just was a mental game from there...if you ask me
Weight, attitude, work ethic - you pick 'em but he was rushed to the mlb and like a lot of pitchers who blaze early - he flared out.
Just imagine a NORMAL Manoah inserted into the Jays' starting rotation...oh, and a NORMAL Vlad Jr....World Series Favourites for sure
Manoahs lack of work ethic and effort hurt him this year, not reporting to AAA is just not a good look for him
3:40 I’m a Yankee fan.
11 ER in less than 3 innings against rookie ball players sounds much worse
Rumours are he has a painkiller addiction. I hope he gets it together!
300lbs of mary browns chicken 🍗
I love the Mary Brown's commercials with him and Springer that still air...they make it look like everything he does he fucks up...
His ego killed him this year and that he’s packed on the pounds and can barely move out there
We simply dont know what has happened yet
Emotional maturity and intelligence of a 10 year old + grossly overweight lover of Golden Corral dinner buffets = flash in the pan Ricky Romano kid brother!:( His trade value is rock-bottom right now, Jays aren't going to just release or waive him for nothing > don't expect the team to do Manurah any career favors here either!
Yeah, I'd wager that adding ~40+ pounds to your frame will PROBABLY affect your mechanics.
Ffs turns out he was injured & nobody is garbage BE BETTER 🙄
hes fat
He wasn’t even there for the camp season at the start of the year. Probably was partying and getting drunk , explaining why he can’t pitch, no practice
Couldn't have happened to a better guy
He should try out for left tackle
Gatta love Baseball.
Also ironic he called Cole the biggest cheater in MLB during the 2022 off season
Alek bombed in 2023
Cole gets a Cy Young
Too slow couldnt pitch at a good pace...(pitch clock) Manoah should join a lob ball league with 50+ older guys! :)
Couldn't have happened to a better guy.
Im sure the Jays want him to succeed but he doesnt seem like the proper fit in the Jays organization. He should talk to Ryu and train with him in the off season instead of worrying about what tattoos to get.
Fam needs to stop scarfing down those Big Macs
Something personal must have happened to him that made him basically shutdown mentally and he isnt going to say anything about it
or hes just fat
Buddy discovered poutine, and undiscovered the gym.
40 lbs of lard will definitely affect your mechanics!!!
Imagine if the blue birds win it all this guy would never live it down
he got the yips
1 bad year doesnt break a career.
People shouldnt be surprised that an entitled spoiled brat, is acting like an entitled spoiled brat.
Why did Manoah fail in 2023? To be honest, I clicked on this video to find out, but you didn’t really tell me anything I didn’t already know.
Alek Manure. Couldn't have happened to a more deserve guy!
He’s a BUM
I have no clue why he's behaved as he has but I would be surprised if his stock in the MLB will ever head into bull territory ever again. Aren't there a ton of capable ball players just chomping at the bit to get their chance in the majors ? Why take a chance on a guy with authority and ego issues ?
Going from 96 to 92 mph on the fastball didn't help
He is the great value DJ Khaled
The fact Gerrit Cole is having a cy young type year makes this so much better.
Cy young type beat
and the jays are better than the yankees and will be for the forseeable future we dont worship players in canada we care about the team....
@@213areacode83 Worship? Thats real funny coming from a citizen of Canada, the socialist dictatorship.
@@213areacode83 welp were you so wrong.
Because he quit
How do we get rid of this loser with the least possible damage to the
Jays. Let another team take on this nightmare
It’s my fault guys I bought a all star Manoah shirt and everything went down hill for that I’m sorry guys
320!? Brutal. He's needs a new work ethic and a trip to single a.
did u even watch the video?
He needs to:
I’ve always wondered if he was bipolar?
I would tell him Alex looses so pounds like 60 or so , > so you do not run out of breathe.
is he doing some secret weight loss training somewhere?
i always believe karma is exist. before the season starts he is cocky keep messing with other baseball player and get cooked. deserved it tbh, hope learn his lesson
his weight and attitude made him suck in 2023
320 is a lie. 350 minimum
That's what happens when you talk mad shit. Karma
Heres a take: Manoah was never good, the 2021 season was simalar to this one, last year was the outlier in his career
Karma Police.
I'm glad this happened to the Boo Jays.
Trade Manoah, bring back Stroman
Trade him
MLB players are real people you know and can be hurt by this kind of crap? Or have you talked personally with Alek. We know he failed to report but other than that the back story is only supposition.
Too many samosas for Manoah!
