Can you believe it's been 23 years since 2014?
Stop no stop😂
it's been 50 years since 23 years ago.
@@joshweigel1131dang, we’re in the year 2050 already?! Wow, time sure does fly by fast
it's been 5 (in my opinion)
What ? It’s only been 8 years
If that makes you feel old, John Lennon's Imagine came out over 7 years ago
I still can’t believe that The Wall is a year old now!!! Time flies
Lil Nas X's run with Old Town Road was very obviously not an accident but it's crazy how much of a marketing genius he turned out to be. Every major single he drops is a mini cultural moment it's wild
Not that crazy. People were always going to check his new stuff. Like "Oh, what is the guy from old town road up to ?"
And then he trolls and clickbaits well
“He”? Why do you clowns attribute these things to the artists themselves lmao? I think you mean the machine behind him is a genius. He is nothing but a personality who does what the corporate team behind him tells him to do.
Also a mini cultural moment? On what planet do you live on where this is true lmao… maybe in this penis consuming community it is, but not for normal people
Or maybe y'all just think he is cute
@@brandonayong5823 by this logic, everyone with a one hit wonder would be a multi-hit wonder.
that is obviously not how it works.
you aren't reading the logic correctly, most people with one hit wonders don't blow up with a troll song. lil las x blew up off a troll song, you are leaving the troll aspect out.@@DudeWithTheNose
Can't believe music started 5 years ago already
I can’t believe dinosaurs went fully extinct in 2012.
I’m bumping this song still unironically-it’s on my “Songs You Can’t Be Upset To” playlist and anytime I have a rough day-this track is bumped
@@krystaliteV7agreed.
Drop a link, my dude
My roommate worked with old people in a nursing home and they loved it too, it was truly a cross generational single
That’s crazy 😂
The five-year anniversary of when Melon finally came out as a die-hard country music stan. Respect
My 5 year-old son is 17 now.
My son was only a 1 year old back in 2018, now he’s 38 and is running for President of the Universe.
This video is confirmation that time doesn't exist anymore.
Grats, Trent Reznor, for having TWO country/folk songs gain widespread fame off your work.
💀
Lol. Took me a second to remember what you were referring to.
He also coproduced the new ninja turtles score
I was having a conversation with someone a few years younger than me and was horrified to find out that they think of the late 2010s as "the good times" 😅
Idk I can relate cos they offered a certain nostalgia and comfort tho
2017 was a great year though
I mean i know they weren't that long ago but moet ppl were too busy whining to realize they were pretty good.
My GF told me yesterday "Do you realize that 2000 for us now is what 1960 was when thriller came out"
That's scary
The pandemic made a cold hard stop between everything before and after it. Suddenly by April 2020, February felt like the good old days.
The fact that the sample credits on this song make Trent Reznor an official co-writer of Old Town Road is legendary
trent reznor got a number 1 hit
Have so much respect for Trent for how he reacted when it blew up. Cleared the sample, acknowledged its catchiness, and genuinely wanted to see Lil Nas X and the producer get the spotlight they deserved. Old man Trent is chill af
The track it's sampled from is 10/10 as well, recommend to anyone who hasn't checked it out yet
@@disappointedoptimist255 first heard it on a Vietnam documentary, very cool soundtrack
NIN?
I think the historically relevant part of Old Time Road is that it somehow is not a one hot hit wonder. It sure sounds like one. A novelty song that doesn't really fits the general trend of the moment featuring a will past his prime country singer heavily eclipsed by his daughter, followed by a plethora of "cashgrabby" remixes? That just screams one hit wonder. However Lil Nas X's online intuition and general marketing skills, and the fact that he had a story to tell makes him the one hit wonder who keeps making hits.
The song that brought the world together
I think part of the popularity of this song is because it's just so _fun_ and while it doesn't have the immediately apparent depth of more serious songs, or speak to the soul really - it resonates with people because it offers escapism and it's almost impossible to not feel happier & lifted when listening to it imo. It's just super catchy, you can't help but sing or move to it - and Lil Nas X has a really nice singing voice that's a lil unique.
I like it a lot and listen to it still to cheer me up (the billy ray cyrus remix especially) but I find it super interesting because upon analysis of the lyrics the story isn't necessarily a happy one, it's one of moving up in the world, finding your place, and gaining success - yeah - but it's got a tinge of sadness because of the hedonistic lifestyle that often goes hand-in-hand with becoming successful in entertainment. I find songs that juxtapose an upbeat, catchy sound with lyrics that end up being a bit sad/concering, quite enticing. It very much gives that vibe of hiding potentially darker things under a veil of happiness, which is what _so_ many of us do in our day-to-day lives.
that's actually kinda insane, it feels like 2 years ago when i was praying for it to drop off the charts
The C*vid-19 pandemic really made time go fast but slow at the time time.
So lame
@@carter_lovejoyCovid was almost 4 years ago. That's insane
@@dakota.7617not lame at all, sorry if the majority of us don’t enjoy penis eating music
I’m gay and it’s always on in this house
Can’t believe kids born in 2015 are getting their driver’s licenses now, time really flies 🥲
I didn’t even realize it had been five years. Jesus. I’m only 27, I’m not supposed to feel old yet.
It only gets worse 😭
Nowadays I get up too fast and my head starts to spin.. my legs don’t carry me the same distance as they used to either…. When fireworks are let off I get sent back to Okinawa.. part of me died on the beach that day - along with the others who didn’t make it. War never changes. But all in all - yeah it sucks being 23
im 25, joinin ya soon. finishing up college and the 18yos make me feel ancient
I'm only 24 but feel old as hell cuz I have epilepsy which ages the brain and I ache from all the bones I've broken while seizing. Idk where I was going w this but saw other ppl talking about their issues and I guess seeing that and venting myself helps me feel less alone, sorry this was sappy as hell lol
I was 18 back then and now I’m 23.
" Came in on a horse. I pulled a gimmick I admit it I got no remorse"
Hasn't sunked in yet that 2023 is already coming to a close. My gray hairs are already growing at a rapid pace.
The best kinds of novelty songs are the ones that are also actually unironically fire. Old Town Road slaps
Old Town Road reminds me of Gangnam style. Both massively popular songs, but their cultural impact just evaporated once the novelty wore off.
Psy wasn’t able to follow it up with anything in the American market, though. Lil Nas X on the other hand has released multiple hits and a decent record.
I'd argue PSY paved the way for Kpop as a whole to become mainstream in the west
@@aszapata10so? Is it necessary to make it big in American market , because he is still big in korea
@@aszapata10he is the one who opens the market for k-pop in west
@@aszapata10I'm also surprised more Psy tracks didn't make it over here. He has way better tracks than Gangnam style which comes off as a gimmick.
theory: fantano recorded these videos in advance, hence the same shirt in the last 3 videos, because he's going to detroit to do a collab with hivemind.
Please be true 🙏😭
What's most cool about this song is that it introduced more people to what's now my favorite band, Nine Inch Nails.
@@luke5100 imagine my reaction when hearing that song for the first time lol, that album changed me
This song had absolutely NO longevity like it is completely gone now
In 2019 I was so invested in the meme about making it the longest running #1 song of all time. I definitely did my part cause my most streamed song of 2019 was old town road (remix) and my second most streamed was the original, lol
2017-2019 just feels like a fever dream, 2021 just didn’t exist as a year it was like 2020 DLC
I remember listening to the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young version of it back in the late 60s. Good time, indeed😌
Time is not moving any slower
When Lil Nas X said:
"18 naked cowboys in the showers at Ram Ranch!"
I felt that
The movement this made for country rap in mainstream music is genuinely enormous, cant personally say its a good thing tho
Haha ur so quirky
Old Town Road is an iconic one-hit wonder kind of song, but Lil Nas X has proven he's got more hits in him.
Yup. Time flies. Always put your faith in timeless things. Fashion and trends come and go and youth is fast and fleeting. Fortunately, I think Old Town Road has aged well and will probably still hold up another five years from now.
Can’t believe it! I remember being in high school when/after it was released and it being such a huge deal with my peers. I hated it back then, but now I think “eh okay fun novelty jam whatever”
I was a freshman at university. I was in a song-writing class, and that track was a huge deal in there for about two or so weeks.
I was 18 back then, fresh out of high school and looking for a job.
I was a senior and I graduated while I was jamming it
Was in eighth grade, now I’m a college freshman
I still remember this song coming on at the bar and the whole place turning into a dancehall. This was in a Vancouver sportsbar. What a moment in time
I never got tired of hearing this lol
Can't wait until it comes back to the radio in 20 years
Not really my kind of music, but it got Trent Reznor a Country Music Award and I still think that's funny, so I'll give it that
I asked my coworker if she knew who NAS was and she said “Lil Nas X? Yeah I know him”.
Let's not forget that the original music video was just some good ole' cowboy clips from Red Dead Redemption 2
Genuinely the first thing I thought was "how many videos is he going to wear that One Punch Man shirt"
Music doesn't always have to speak to the soul. Sometimes I want to dress in black, put my earphones in and stare out at rain looking all contemplative and others times I just want to dance. It's amazing that we have so many genres of music and songs so everyone can find the song that they want at that moment.
What I rarely hear getting mentioned is that Red Dead Redemption 2 was one of the biggest new games at that moment and the first video for Old Town Road was nothing but Red Dead clips. He really knew how to ride the wave 🤠
The old town road is actually starting to get old
"i dont know anyone whos unironically jamming these right now" well its nice to meet your mr fantano :)
Bruh I had no clue until rn that that song relied on a sample for NIN
Out of all the music I've ever bumped in my car with the windows down, this is the only song that ever made a random passerby get super stoked
I think the bit of the story i love is that Lil Nas X found the beat for sale online. Like the song was already blowing up before him and the guy who produced it even met for the first time so just really was the perfect storm and combination of everything
Ah yes, the "achy breaky heart" of our generation
You're not aging, what's your secret!!!! I have been following your channel for so long I can't even remember
Hes vegan, straight edge and works out lol. So y'know a healthy lifestyle
@@xoxonaotchan_7902 yeah healthy lifestyle is the best natural way to keep young
Ever since Drake gave him that cookie recipe, he has not gained a single mark in age lmao
I’ll just say 2015-2020 was probably the most insane time in my life of all forms of the culture it’s very quickly just became this big mushy mess of a timeline that if you look back on it you think, “wait, that really happened?” 😂
Old Town Road, Get Lucky & Hey Ya are in their own category of ubiquitous singles
i still bump this song every day on my drive to work. one of the greatest tracks of all time!
Just remember, 34 Ghosts IV by Nine Inch Nails. You’ll thank me
"We did this to ourselves"
- Anthony Fantano
The fact the dude who made the beat didn’t blow up from this is still criminal haven’t heard his name since this song
I think red dead being out helped this song too because everyone was into being a cowboy/girl.
I liked old town road because it sampled a NIN song and Ghosts I-IV is honeslty underrated
Thanks for reminding me that I took a gap semester and I'll never escape colllege. Freshman year meeting new friends that would actually be long lasting was the vibe to this song once it came out second semester
Cant wait to hear old town road on the classic music radio stations in the future when I drive my kids to school
not every song is meant to prioritise longevity
I highly recommend DJ Cumberbund’s remix of Old Staind Road. It’s absolute fire.
damn, five years old already? that’s crazy lol
That's nothing I'm way older
Fuck I was 19 back then huh...
The Nine Inch Nails sample is actually wild to think about
Thats crazy time flies by crazy that 2017 was 13 years ago
back in 2005 old town road
Morgan Wallen uses a lot of hip hop production in his country songs and he's become a huge star
I think that list at the end of longest-running singles really shows that it isn't really a marker of cultural impact and more of it's novelty and present trendiness.
It's still on my playlist. It gets skipped most of the time but occasionally I still jam to it unironically.
Imani Coppola’s Legend of a Cowgirl was released in 1997 and is still a banger.
No stop. I was thinking at work today that its been a long time since ive heard of lil nas x.
You wanna meet someone who is unironically jamming this song still? Me.
They got a young kid cowboy spittin’ in that remix 🔥🔥🔥
Ironically, my wife and I listened to this song just yesterday, and we reminisced its stranglehold on the pop culture
I can't believe it's been 5 years, and I haven't gotten around to listen to it in its entirity, from beginning to end, just the mai mn hook (I guess), the old town road phrase.
Does anyone realize that melon hasn't changed his t shirt since like five days ago, man... 😢
and im 18 today!!!! Loving music since 11-17-05! fan since 2022!!! keep going Fantano!!!
I was born earlier that year. Cool!
Happy birthday!
There are some seamen on you right shoulder...
My man got his inspiration from lil tracy like a farmer 100%
who else was 14 years old
This song still slaps
I swear covid was a black hole it really feels like we skipped 2 years of culture, there’s no way this song is 5 years old.
kids born in 2012 are now legal drinking age. let that sink in
I still listen to this song a few times a week, and lil nas x is one of my favorite current day rappers
Over and Over again aged much better, I don't know what you're on about Melon.
Fuck, I feel old now
Certified old west classic
i knew "last night" led 4 a long time but i forgot it was 16 weeks !! and "as it was" was up there 4 15????
i can't help but think of a comment that mic the snare made in his video on music that defined the 90s, where he said that everything that was big in that decade was MASSIVE. in the present, it feels like that can only happen cos the internet allowed 4 the creation & splintering-off of cultures & subcultures, so a pop song can just sneak on2 the charts bc of, say, minivan moms & then bam, it's breaking chart records
& the power of said fandoms isn't 2b messed with. ik the harries are HUUUUUUUge
You shouldve talked abt the impact it had on remixes specifically and artists producing 50 remixes of the same song to make it go number 1
It was a decent song and a damn good time
Super serious mode fantano
lil nas x is a legend idc if people think he’s an industry plant the ep and full album after old town road kept him on my radar. he’s good at what he does…
Maybe the real old town road was the horses we made along the way
your mustache looks like hair is spilling out of your nose and falling onto your lip
Oh to be a freshman in college again for the sicko mode old town road mo bamba era
Bro went from old town road to brokeback mountain
I feel like you can compare gangnam style and old town road. The Odd genre, the hold of internet culture and just how meme-ble it was.
Trent Reznor is a genius
Congrats on 5 years of wearing the One Punch Man shirt!
