He actually was right, in that instance anyway - that is it didn't matter what his "race" was, in that context anyway. Sam came up with "I need to know if I'm talking to a smart or a dumb person" - but that was not why he asked guy's "race", he asked guy's name to "get him", as later proved.

For one, the FBI doesn't mandate police precincts nationally to gather and report that data, nor is it a uniform reporting standard for the data that is collected. The majority of that data is based on conviction rates and we ALL KNOW (at least people who give a fuck about reality) that blacks are disproportionately targeted for arrests on things whites aren't arrested for (minor drug possession) and disproportionately get convicted because they don't have good legal representation and are encouraged to plea deal instead of actually going before a jury/judge who are 90% of the time going to be white. When you control for poverty, whites and blacks have similar rates of criminality too. Basically, its another talking point rightwing media has created that can fit on a hat or t-shirt to make these idiots feel better about being bigots.

The biggest contributor to any difference in knowledge amongst the races is the environment in which a person is raised. However, it being a race factor is complete horse crap based on something Sam said in jest. Take a look at some of those poor communities in West Virginia. Some of the most illiterate people in the country based on data, and they are predominantly white. If we want to address the funding for schools and stop funneling education money to all of our rich communities. Spread the wealth.

Go visit a physician and have your ears looked at, he said 'on average', meaning that the race of an indivudual is nonsensical to the topic. If you and Sam had known about the basics of statistics, you wouldn't try to present this caller as being a racist. The real racist here is Sam, not the caller.

This caller is a stranger, who asserted that race can be predictive of IQ (because that’s the implication of the statement, and what you are implying by taking an average, that the number is a rough middle point of the data range), so Sam wanted to know the callers race so he could make a judgement call on f this caller was worth his time.
Isn’t that what you folks want? To be able to make judgements based on race using “data”?

Ultraspontane yeah but Charles Murray only explains the half of the story that supports his argument; that wealth is an insignificant factor compared to inherited IQ. When he refers to the Mother's IQ he does not qualify it by explaining; besides genes a person is shaped by many other things like epigenetic effects and how environmental factors created by being in the presents of a higher IQ guardian effect gene expression long after conception and a laundry list of other variables that cannot be easily controlled for. He just let's his audience fill in that blank with some colloquial notion about superior genes. The under tow of poverty is very real and poverty does effect brain development. The distance between any 2 IQ points can be a vastly different size. Chuck does not explain that IQ growth out of poverty is a larger steeper step then any of the middle class steps and that these larger steps do require a large public investment to surmount. Those large investments have been provided for SOME folks by government policies which are not available to every citizen.
Serious economic constraints have been removed in the past and this has lead to positive results(results limited by racially bias implementation). For example the land grab and other programs similar to Levittown..ect along with gainful government employment and unionization are all factors in the country's development of a "middle-class" from which an increase in IQ has be realized. Ignoring this factor is becoming a tradition of those who have benefited from it the most. This willful ignorance is probably done for egotistical reasons or worse it's understood secretly then dismissed outwardly to satisfy a racist ideology, but it is a factor non the less. Charles Murray narrows the conversation down to just the measurements in abstraction. By not acknowledging where generational wealth originated he does a disservice to his audience and his credibility.

Can you please go replace Sam on the show? The show would improve so much from it on an intellectual and honesty level. This is what Sam's respond should have been, instead of his racist remarks and strawmen in an attempt to discredit the caller, rather than the caller's arguments.
One slight critique, I'm not even sure the caller mentioned anything that's adresses the cause of the mentioned iq gap. Did I miss something, or did you attribute an agenda to the caller that he didn't express?
BlacksmithTWD I wouldn't say I was even responding to the caller in particular though his confusion is a measure of the rampant ignorance that motivated me to respond to the "IQ debate" and how people like Charles Murray are misrepresenting the role of genetics. When I hear someone trying to attribute race as a major factor without qualifying to what degree life experiences and interactions with the total social environment can be attributed to race outside of just heredity, I get the notion that someone is trying to make me assume that genes are determining iq and that genes are "set in stone". Perhaps I'm wrong about the motives of people like Charles Murry because they do tend to stop short of saying outright "nothing can be done to change genes, so nothing should be done by macro-policy" they let their audience make those types of connections without providing all of the available information but I know I'm NOT wrong to say this country benefited greatly from the public school system, the G.I. bill, etc etc. As well as the obvious results in cases of feral children who were NOT lacking any genetic strength but regardless of race the conditions that lead to feral behavior were able to greatly over power "good genes" in truth having stronger intelligence genes would only serve to increase the speed and propensity of a person to become feral were they to have that type of exposure. I think the best analogy I have heard on this subject goes like this: If you were to watch a 100 bakers make a 100 delicious cakes in a 100 different kitchens you could hypothesize that having an oven with a stainless steel exterior is an important part of producing delicious cakes but if you were to learn how to make a delicious cake the exterior appearance of the oven would become almost completely nullified barely rising above vanity in terms of being important to delicious cake production.

I'm not aware of Charles Murray attributing race as a major factor, the guy merely pointed out a correlation. Proof of correlation is by no means proof of causation. Anyone in the field ought to know this. There could be a third factor (like social influences) that cause the correlation between the other two.
One of my favorite examples explaining this is, that there is a correlation between people living in huge houses and them driving expensive cars. But me buying an expensive car doesn't mean that I automaticly live in a huge house. There is the third factor, that most people living in huge houses are rich, and so are the ones owning expensive cars.
Though I share your concern when results of such research fall in the hands of the ones not having the education to interpret them, they may easily draw the wrong conclusion.

The old 'not what is said but what is left unsaid' game. Sam has approached this topic correctly multiple times. He points out the complexity of variables the short comings and inescapable biases of testing but most importantly how considerably small a difference the actual results represent. We're talking about 1 degree of separation between black and white intelligence, it's like having an argument about the difference between Buzz Aldrin and Niel Armstrong's trips to the moon and saying one was a failure and the other was successful.
