Actually no. They aren’t done by a committee. They take however many ppl, all walks of life, and each of them list their top 1 or 5 or whatever it is. Then they tally those votes. That’s how artists that you wouldn’t think of as top singers like Fela Kuti get on here.
@@rmvdhaak My bad, I made the comment while I watched the video. There are so many that fantano didn't mentioned like Barry White (god rest his soul) and David Ruffin of the Temptations (RIP).
Not having Layne Staley on here is a crime. Layne had an insane range and in terms of raw emotion and passion, Layne Staley might just be one of the best vocalists ever for that.
Also, THE HARMONIES. Alice In Chain's had some of the best harmonies ever in music in my opinion, Jerry and Laynes voices just blend perfectly and really help to give them something unique.
Courtney Love over Jeff Buckley made me literally laugh out loud. It doesn’t matter what criteria you use - vocal range, richness of tone, dexterity, influence on other artists - they should be leagues apart in this list.
Love when you stan the Queen that is Janet Jackson! Her soft vocals oozed sensuality and charisma and were incredibly influential to the careers of Aaliyah Ciara, Kelis, Victoria Monet among others! I swear The Rolling Stones never do the Jacksons justice ever.
Blaming Eddie Vedder for the imitators that followed Pearl Jam’s success is weird; are people blaming Ian Curtis for the guy from Interpol stealing his style? It’s so weird to blame the person who was ripped off for people ripping them off.
I dont think the shade was deserved though - his voice is pretty great imo, and adds a lot to PJ'S songs. Of course the rip offs deserve scorn but I don't see what's wrong about including Vedder on this list.
Vedder is so overhated, he's genuinely one of the most unique vocalists in rock full stop, and the fact that he inspired so many shitty impersonators shows that he had something special that post grunge douchebags wanted to replicate.
This is a list you really can’t do without separating by genre. A soul singer is gonna have a much different voice than a punk rock singer, but nothing makes one inherently better than the other. That or make it an unranked list.
And fuck having a "unique voice" this is about the best singers. People like bob dylan, lou reed or mick jagger shouldnt be on the list, theirnnot known for singing well. Thi shouldnt be the most popular singer list, this should be the list of the best popular singers. The list shouldnhave been done by genre, any person wich is the standard of a music genre deserves a top 10 Pop: MJ, WHITNEY RNB: Aretha Jazz:Ella Fitzgerald Soul:james brown Rock:freddy mercury Metal:ronnie james dio Opera:luciano pavaroti, maria callas Musical theater: barbara streisand Edith Piaf, Amália Rodrigues, Elis Regina,Camaron de la isla. All of these people are considered the voice of their respective genres and everybody that comes after them has to mesure themselves against them, then we can start to discuss the rest of the list
@@goncalodias6402 It’s not about hitting a million notes per syllable, it’s about tone, distinction and originality. Lou Reed, Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan should definitely be on there. The list is called the greatest singers, not the most technically competent vocalists and Freddie Mercury’s painful and annoying voice is not the voice of rock.
I’m blown away at MJ being that low, especially putting Ariana so much higher than him. I’d argue that Ariana could make the list, though DEFINITELY lower down it- yeah she is literally impossible to understand sometimes but she does have more of a range and ability than people realize when you look at her Broadway-style work. Janet being missing is also strange.

Personally I think you gotta put Ella over Sinatra any day of the week. She had the range on top of being just as charismatic, super versatile and extremely technically skilled.
THANK YOU! Sinatra is iconic and influential, but his technical ability in terms of jazz is just pretty good. Ella Fitzgerald was a master. Really calling a sinatra a jazz singer doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, he never improvised, like ever. (Like solos, I mean)
I'd say he's still a jazz vocalist he sang jazz music improvisation isn't the only thing that makes a jazz musician maybe an instrument player but not a vocalist. @@milesd4460
@@Kevin-fj3ff I think if there's a difference in recognizeability between them that has more to do with the death of jazz and also race, but that's not even my biggest disagreement here. More importantly, I don't think the replicability of Sinatra's voice is a point in his favor. Sure, his voice was pretty, and he had skill to back it up, but that doesn't make him better than her. Quite the opposite, Ella is iconic BECAUSE few can do what she did.
@@Kevin-fj3ffElla’s scatting technique alone puts her leagues above Sinatra lmaoooooo. All you need to do is listen to her and Duke Ellingtons 7 minute rendition of It Don’t Mean A Thing and that’s all you’ll ever need to hear to understand why she should always be higher than Frank Sinatra on any list that involves singing. Celine Dion is among the Vocal Trinity, alongside Whitney and Mariah. She may be polarising in terms of her artistic choices, but as a singer, she is no doubt a tour de force. She, together with Whitney and Mariah, powered the diva industry in the 90s that basically gave birth to Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Adele, Gaga and Ariana. And the fact they have been proven wrong and debunked so many times and people still believe them is ridiculous. He can ousting almost everyone on this list.

Tom waits is always excluded from Rolling Stones lists it is annoying. He is one of the best voices of all time and he always changed his style throughout his career like no other. Give him the credit he deserves.
If Tom Waits is gonna be on the list (which he should be), Captain Beefheart, who he directly was influenced by and had much more technical ability, would need to be even higher.
Tom Waits I believe was on their previous Top 100 Greatest Singers List. He was placed at 83rd I think. Crazy how he wasn't included in this one considering the character and flexibility of his voice.
The criteria for this list seemed completely arbitrary to me. For some they're basing it off of vocal ability, others for emotion, others for songwriting, and others for impact/legacy. It was all over the place. Also the edit while talking about Bruce Dickinson made me LOL. I was definitely upset and confused that he wasn't on this list too
@Matejko108 wouldn't learn anything interesting. Being technically gifted is only a small part of what makes a great singer. That's why you use a range of parameters.
In terms of pure vocal ability, Cornell definitely beats out some of the people above him. He is arguably the best vocalist of the 90s rock boom, and had incredible power.
I know everyone is collectively fuming about Celine Dion's exclusion, but can we just talk about the fact that Mike Patton wasn't on here? Mike Patton is possibly THE most versatile vocalist in rock and metal, the way he can essentially change voices on the fly on songs like Mr Bungle's Squeeze Me Macaroni and Faith No More's Land Of Sunshine is genuinely mind blowing, and as much as I love Serj, listening to Mr Bungle shows that he was clearly taking a lot of his style from Patton.
I really don’t know what the criteria is if Mike Patton wasn’t on the list but ossie osborne is. Don’t get me wrong, I love Ossie, but I think we can all agree that he isn’t a great singer
Mj 86 is crazy. Bradley knowell not being on there is crazy. I know he wasn’t the most technical singer but I think he definitely made up for it with raw talent.
rolling stone has a crush on bob dylan or something bc everytime they make one of these lists he is on there when let's be honest, the man is NOT a singer like that. he just sings to get the lyrics out. literally he is just talking over the music most of the time.
One ridiculous thing I noticed is that Madonna is mentioned four times during that article (for example they describe Ofra Haza as “The Madonna of the Middle East”), yet they don't include Madonna herself on the list. All in all, while making a list like this is difficult, there was just too many undeniably great and influential singers missing from this list to have any appreciation for it.
Madonna had waaay chops for sure. A legend if pop. Her vocals were literally not great from an objective standpoint if I just think of her key songs. I guess she is way more talented at pop than Lady Gaga, because if Lady Gaga lacked that 3+ octave voice she has, her music would be damps as wet chips. Did Amy Lee of Evanescence even make the 200? She brought it. Who else showed women they could make a great pop record without a lilting, meandering vocal style but her? She literally screams and her songs are cream. Could you ever win at making these lists?
They're literally ranking every detail of an artform that is completely objective so obviously their lists are gonna be terrible. Michael Jackson at 86 hahahahahahahahahhaha
Ever since they did a Top 100 Greatest Female Rock Vocalists of All-Time and placed Barbra Streisand ahead of Pat Benatar, they have lost what little credibility they had left.
I understand not representing the extremes of vocal genres as much, but I really think Serj should have made the list. Such a unique and versatile voice. In terms of influence there are also a lot of country singers like Rex Allen. Also a yodeller, speaking of extreme vocal genres.
Mike Akerfeld too. Lists like these generally ignore any metal subgenres outside classic 70s metal and maybe NWOBHM which is a shame because there's some incredible vocal work in the extreme subgenres. Even if they'd just included one or two as a nod to those styles I'd have been okay with it.
@@craigcharlesworth1538 yeah that's true. But lists like this are inherently impossible to manage, Sissel Kyrkjebø is one of the greatest Norwegian singers of all time, but it feels unreasonable to expect the authors to know who she is, even though her vocal ability is much better than many of the people listed, but if you haven't lived in Scandinavia then you've probably never heard of her. I feel like this problem will always exist, but that it's better to make lists in narrower categories. Like most important singers for rock and roll history, or just singer-songwriters.
I haven’t seen the entire list but I would’ve bet money he was at least in the top 100. He’s top 10 for me and the best of the grunge era. Insanely powerful and emotive.
And it’s crazy they put the lead singer from Pearl Jam in but no Chris Cornell,Kurt cobain or layne staley Pearl Jam was like one of the worst if not the worst that came from the grunge era I just stand that guys vocals there abnouxious
Gene Ween is the most underrated vocalist ever. He has an insane vocal range both in terms of voices that he can do as well as emotions and characters he can portray depending on the song. "If you could save yourself" might be Gene's most passionate performance in any song, and it features both silly and really heartbreaking lyrics.
Ween in general is so fucking underrated! They have so much range technically and thematically. It's such a shame they don't get the recognition they deserve.
Someone who will never get on these lists but i have an absolute appreciation for is Josh Homme. He sings so melodically and beautiful, in such stark contrast to QOTSAs gritty and hard desert rock. I feel like that goes unnoticed
I kinda feel that Josh is the next David Bowie. He's a fantastic musician, and he just radiates cool. Especially now that he's aged a little. He looks like a movie star.
Huge Taylor Swift fan here: her being at 102 is an actual travesty. Thats a mistake. Above all the artists they put her over? Insane. She shouldnt even be in the top 150, lets be honest here
I hear you, I'm a massive Lana fan but the fact that she placed 175 when people like Jennifer Hudson, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Bocelli and more didn't place at ALL is... yikes.
I personally consider her a better songwriter than a singer, she's definitely a good singer but not exactly one of the best in terms of singing ability.
@@suz3787 it's sad they don't take in consideration artist that may not have the biggest commercial impact, but they are very influential, there's tons of them.
How was Chester Bennington not on this list, given up scream was insane, he could scream incredibly well and was solid when it came to pitch. He was massive in shaping a lot of peoples taste. As well as Layne Staley, did nobody writing this list see Love Hate Love live at the moore? To be honest I'd have replaced Eddie Vedder with either of them, both are more deserving.
I was so surprised not seeing Layne here. Could replace Eddie for sure, and should also place higher than both Kurt and Chris imo. Layne is an insane singer, Love Hate Love great example.
Agreed, he had huge vocal range and could go from a scream/shout to a silky whisper in a heartbeat. Not to mention the fact he is one of the most melodic singers!
She is the best jazz singer of all time. That should put her at least top 10 This list should have been done by style. And leave all the "interesting" or "unique" voices out of this, this is about great voices people like lou reed or bob dylan dont belong
As a New Orleans dude, I don’t think John Fogerty was specifically borrowing from black Louisianan musicians. His style and CCR’s aesthetic is like a vague pastiche of black and white/Cajun Louisiana musicians that almost becomes its own thing. Even though his style is a bit appropriative, I still love it because it became original in its own way.
Janet Jackson will always be one of my favourite pop singers. Up until the early 2000's (superbowl) she put out incredible pop songs. She can dance, sing and she is criminally underrated.
10:35 man Chris Cornell should at least be in the top 20. He’s without a doubt one of the greatest rock singers of all time if not the best. I’m not even a big fan of his music but his range and power was unmatched. Anthony saying he’s high on the list is just nuts to me.
Yea honestly can’t believe Anthony said that he shouldn’t even br 80. Personal preference is fine but if you arguing as a technical singer, it really doesn’t make sense.
The amount of misses is insane. No Bing Crosby, Julian Casablancas, Serj Tankian, Chris Martin (i know he's polarizing but his falsetto is gold), Mike Patton, Layne Staley, hell even like Lana Del Ray and H.E.R. couldve made the list, but im mostly happy with the female vocalists that made it.

You can hate Eddie Vedder's style all you want, and hate (as I do) what he caused the 2000s to be, with Creed, Nickelback, etc. But the man sure can sing. Unplugged Black gives me chills everytime.
Eddie Vedder’s normal voice is also naturally deep and gruff. He sings the way he does because that’s how his voice actually sounds. All the other guys who copied him don’t actually sound like that so it was inauthentic. Eddie was the real deal.
People say Eddie and Layne Staley kind of started/influenced the dreaded "yarling" of the late 90s and early 2000s. The difference was, when you listen to Eddie and Layne speak, that's actually just part of their voice. It's not an obnoxious put-on like Scott Stapp et al.

The Eddie Vedder impersonations are one of the strongest running bits of this channel
I like Eddie Vedder
Blaming Eddie Vedder for the imitators that followed Pearl Jam’s success is weird; are people blaming Ian Curtis for the guy from Interpol stealing his style? It’s so weird to blame the person who was ripped off for people ripping them off.
8:26
Agree with you on this
Hard agree.
it's weird that they include punk and stuff at all bc most alternative genre singers have no technical skill
And fuck having a "unique voice" this is about the best singers. People like bob dylan, lou reed or mick jagger shouldnt be on the list, theirnnot known for singing well. Thi shouldnt be the most popular singer list, this should be the list of the best popular singers.
The list shouldnhave been done by genre, any person wich is the standard of a music genre deserves a top 10

Rock:freddy mercury
Metal:ronnie james dio
Opera:luciano pavaroti, maria callas
Musical theater: barbara streisand

All of these people are considered the voice of their respective genres and everybody that comes after them has to mesure themselves against them, then we can start to discuss the rest of the list
@@goncalodias6402 It’s not about hitting a million notes per syllable, it’s about tone, distinction and originality. Lou Reed, Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan should definitely be on there.

W honestly
I was gonna come in here bitching about how low Chris Cornell was but you have flipped the script. W take.
Ween in general is so fucking underrated! They have so much range technically and thematically. It's such a shame they don't get the recognition they deserve.
He’s the kind of singer I want to be
Indeed, Freedom of ‘76 alone should get him on this list
Someone who will never get on these lists but i have an absolute appreciation for is Josh Homme. He sings so melodically and beautiful, in such stark contrast to QOTSAs gritty and hard desert rock. I feel like that goes unnoticed
I'd like to reaffirm this comment after just seeing them live, Josh is freaking amazing live
I kinda feel that Josh is the next David Bowie. He's a fantastic musician, and he just radiates cool. Especially now that he's aged a little. He looks like a movie star.
@bsb1975 I saw him in concert a couple months ago, I swear he is the coolest looking dude ever with the talent to match
people call him ginger elvis for a reason
Well there is a reason precious metals are rare
Huge Taylor Swift fan here: her being at 102 is an actual travesty. Thats a mistake. Above all the artists they put her over? Insane. She shouldnt even be in the top 150, lets be honest here
She should be out of the list tbh. Let her rank comfortably in the Best Songwriters because that's her strongest talent.
I thought you we’re going to say she should have been way higher so happy you didn’t
I don’t know Anthony, the fact that this list has Corey Feldman at 1 makes it good for me.
He was better than mj
Seriously, Chester had an incredible range and so much power in his voice. This is just neglect.
I was so surprised not seeing Layne here. Could replace Eddie for sure, and should also place higher than both Kurt and Chris imo. Layne is an insane singer, Love Hate Love great example.
@@alfonsenstrom1445 AIC washes PJ easily anyways
@@shrimpscampin Definitely
Paul McCartney I think definitely deserves his spot, he could change his voice for almost any style, very expressive
no he dont
Agreed, he had huge vocal range and could go from a scream/shout to a silky whisper in a heartbeat. Not to mention the fact he is one of the most melodic singers!
i love the ella fitzgerald love. she definitely deserved way higher on that list. at least top 25
number 1 for me
Number 1/Top5. Idek how she’s not ahead of Ariana Grande and even Sinatra
She is the best jazz singer of all time. That should put her at least top 10
This list should have been done by style.
And leave all the "interesting" or "unique" voices out of this, this is about great voices people like lou reed or bob dylan dont belong
@@goncalodias6402 Ella is amazing but Sarah Vaughn is even greater in my opinion
@@goncalodias6402 Ella numba one. China numba four
MJ at 86 is absolute bonkers. Him and Freddie Mercury should've been top 10.
It's good that they piss off their incredibly annoying fans.
I'm surprised Anthony didnt make the list, considering his powerful and versatile performances throughout the video
Haven’t seen one snub mention for Peter Gabriel. One of the greatest voices ever.
Also forgotten !!!
there’s heaps missing
not really top 200
Or Bono!!!
@@stephenstrang590 Bono was at 140
Janet Jackson will always be one of my favourite pop singers.
& 1.
Yea he’s a complete idiot for saying that. chris is arguably the greatest rock vocalist of all time
fr and the fact that layne staley wasn’t included too is INSANE
I mean, top 50 at the very least. Man had range, emotion, and insane versatility
Lana at least made the list around like 150, it just wasn't in the video
Hell is Christina Aguilera even on here?
Without Pavarotti, Celine Dion, Nat King Cole and Dimash being on this list, this list becomes a complete joke!!
Agree totally those are good singers. I mean if Billy Eilish and Courtney Love are in this list and they are not, the whole thing is ridicolous.
List stated that it wouldn't include opera singers - Pavoratti is an opera singer.
@@kimberly38amsterdam only opera singer you know is pavarotti
@@bunnyban5365, really? How about Caruso, Chaliapin, Lanza, Caballe, Callas, Domingo, Lemeshev, Ruffo, Kozlovskiy, Arkhipova, Del Monaco, Obraztsova, Vishnevskaya, Carreras, Gobbi, Sinyavskaya, Bartoli, Netrebko, Hvorostovsky, etc.? If you're a dumb and limited person, it doesn't mean that everyone around you are the same.🙄
I don't think any opera singers (e.g. Pavarotti) made the list.
I think the weirdest inclusion is Rihanna. Like even her fans mostly agree that her voice isn’t the strongest asset and from what I’ve seen of her live she’s pretty breathy and unremarkable. Gaga and Ariana and Beyoncé make sense in terms of modern artists but Rihanna is a really baffling choice
Bob Dylan is on this list at number 15 but the pick you’re focusing on is Rihanna? Okay lol.
Carti is a better singer than Rihanna and beyonce
@@vibe2g4l45 it’s just a list 😭 you’re acting like it’s wrong for someone to point out that rihanna isn’t the strongest singer and it’s odd for her to make the list
I think she has a pretty unique tone that is irresistible in pop music and turns every song into a hit, but yeah, #68 is a lot, i would put her near the top 150
I think Taylor Swift has no reason to be on the list tbh
@@bannedplaylist but it is
Once I saw MJ at 86, I knew without a doubt not to take any of it seriously.
anthony singing king of carrot flowers was the cover we did not deserve, but needed
I love how Rolling stone tries to save bad lists by putting Aretha Franklin at number 1. Also Brandy at 195 is a hate crime
Aretha was number 1 on their last list as well.
Not having Mike Patton on here is a crime. That man has insane range and versatility.
Who would you replace?
Taylor Swift
i was just thinking that
@@LeylaDerben Actually, if influence is involved, Mike should be outside Top 50. Dude is hella talented and versatile, but he is rather obscure for the mainstream. I mean, Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell are just as versatile and experimental, but they, unlike Mike, are way more well-known and highly influential across many genres.
@@LeylaDerben I am familiar with Mike, and I know he partakes across many hard rock/metal genres in various projects.
Joni is way more versatile than people giver her credit for, she doesn't necesarily jump across genres like Mike, but she switches it up multiple times and uses many different genre's tools in each of her albums. I mean, if you compare her with guys like Dylan or Young, you might understand how experimental/versatile she is.
The top 10 is actually solid. Could've has been way worse. But Celine missing and Micheal Jackson being low and Taylor Swift being higher than others is weird
Michael being 86 is the most infuriating part of the list.
Beyonce is at 8,please
Beyonce SHOULD be at eight. shes an excellent vocalist. why are people so delusional???
@@farahwork2552 Excellent vocalist = 8th best singer of all time to you?
@@rosaparks8688 Well again she has huge impact, has style and can do so many different genres with her voice, has amazing technique and great range, why wouldn't she be number 8?
How is Harry Nilsson not included?? He was one of pop music’s greatest vocalists. Honestly deserves top 50 at least
Glad to see that Amy Winehouse, Hank Williams and Thom Yorke also all made the list
I’m genuinely amazed that there was no mention of Jim Morrison, James Hetfield, Bruce Dickinson, Bon Scott/Brian Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, Steven Tyler, Paul Stanley, Damon Albarn, David Gilmour, Phil Anselmo or Peter Steele on here, all their vocal styles are iconic and I’m honestly shocked that singers like Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Ozzy, Janis Joplin, Mick, MJ, Robert Plant and Roger Daltrey were ranked so low
It should be renamed "greatest pop singers"
You can add maynard to that list as well. Man could hold his own in terms of both style and skill.
Rolling Stones hates anything to do with classic rock that isn’t rhymed with The Reetles
Dave Gahan from Dépêche Mode
Wasn't Jim on the first one? That's just weird.
does suck to not see more metal vocalists (Serj, Patton, Dickinson mentioned in the video) people like Mikael Åkerfeldt, Devin Townsend, Maynard James Keenan are all really excellent vocalists and while i'm not expecting to see all of them right at the top or whatever i'd expect at least one of them get a mention somewhere
yeah, 'cos Mike Patton is nowhere near as good as Billie Eilish, right!? lol
serj definetly deserves a spot
Was Geoff Tate on the list? Should be, if he isnt
Mikael DEFINITELY deserves a spot. Nobody can tell me things like Blackwater Park or Ghost Reveries aren't the perfect use of clean and heavy vocals together.
No Aurora Aksnes in at least the bottom 200 ia crazy, incredibly underratted vocalist with one of the most unique styles Ive ever heard
Rob Halford at 129 is absolutely insane, so is leaving Céline out.
So are Bruce Dickinson and Layne Staley.
Also no Godsmack. Unforgivable
Where would you put halford, dio and dickinson personally? Agree. The List lost it's credibility when they put Arianna that fucking high.

I know Rolling Stone doesn't really like prog, but alot of the biggest prog bands had some of the best vocalists ever, Jon Anderson, John Wetton, Greg Lake all sounded heavenly even in their 70s
Having comprehensively listened to Yes over the past month, most songs for the first time, I hold Jon Anderson in an incredibly high regard.
It really seems that in general they hate the 70s and 80s, because they left out so many iconic voices of that time and ranked a lot of them way to low.
Agreed, and, while I'm not the biggest Genesis fan, I would include Peter Gabriel in there too
Opeth's early vocals as well by Mikael are some of the most amazing opposites mixed into the songs as "prog" death metal.
Anthony's impersonation of Eddie Vedder gets me every time 😂
its surprisingly accurate
No Mike Paton? His range is insane. I mean the dude does Italian opera. Has a six octave range. If he wanted to do pop and sing some of Max Martin’s songs he would be the biggest pop star in the world.
@Matejko108 Yeah actually they could have been included...I mean...it's about top 200 singers and...Jessye Norman, Fritz Wunderlich, Luciano Pavarotti, Franz Crass, Crista Ludwig are for sure singers. Influential, technically outstanding, etc.
i really don't like any of Patton's music but even I have to admit the man's got fuckin pipes
@Matejko108 I didn’t mean it as he is an opera singer, and opera singers should be counted. It’s that he does from funk to rock to opera. And has fronted highly influential bands such as Mr Bungle and Faith No More.

You can hate Eddie Vedder's style all you want, and hate (as I do) what he caused the 2000s to be, with Creed, Nickelback, etc. But the man sure can sing. Unplugged Black gives me chills everytime.
I always say the difference between Eddie Vedder and all his imitators is that he actually can sing lol.
@@shannonbananan8520 exactly!
Also, he doesn't even really sing that way anymore, he changed his vocal style around No Code/Yield.
