Yea you got a good fixer upper camper there .... I have had 4 campers in my gypsy career now and still have 2 of them . Im sitting in my newest camper I bought and have been fixing and modding it out . A 1989 Lance Squire .... added a 210 watt solar panel up on the new roof racks I made . 2 new deep cell batteries added , A cargo pod is up on the racks too , new roof vent hatch covers , all new interior LED lights , faucets , bed mattress ...... and next building some new cabinets in bed room area and a couple shelves ....theres always lots to do ...... But yep Im living in it full time up in the mountains now have been doing this for 20 years traveling to where I want to be and working as I go as I go if needed ....I ski and fish and ride my dirt bike for fun just me and my girl ....my 2 y/o dog ..... I hope you and others find the freedom i have and enjoy every minute of it ..... Happy Trails !!

The HUGE advantage to the slide in camper is they dont break down like motorized campers which means the truck that hauls it can be repaired way easier than the P30 chassis. You can leave it at a camp ground and drive the truck into town.
Nice roomy camper. The problem with using your stove or a Mr Buddy heater is that the combustion uses your oxygen in the camper and the exhaust is deadly, it also contains water which condensates and makes your camper wet inside. Probably best to use the built-in heater, just make sure you have a good 12v battery to run the fan. Thanks for sharing and Happy Camping
Love the olders slide in campers and older trucks o had some in the 70s and 80s , my family and I had a blast camping in them, I wish I had one now, at 72 I could still have a blast with the wife and the Lil dog camping in one.
i bought a 1975 Winnebago truck camper last spring and slid it in my 91 dodge 4x4 diesel which is not new or pretty. took her on a 2500 mile trip from the prairies to BC and back. no breakdowns and lots of thumbs up from gearheads like us.
I've just picked up a palomino popup in bed cabover camper. Then took it from AZ to Alaska then to Missouri and back. Loved it. I dont recommend using stove as heat at all. Unless you've got a death wish
I saw another mention this , you need a set of overload springs on that rig. Not cheap coil over shocks . A real set of leaf springs mounted on top of the existing ones . Ad a leaf systems will kill your ride. Get a set that allows for 1.5 inches of travel before bearing the load . A rear sway bar and duel rear shocks will help as well. I had a 84 gmc 1/2 ton camper truck. It was very well built for taking a load. It redistributed the load so as the front and rear both squared . If you hit some wind or misjudged a curve it could be catastrophic. You also must consider the weight once you have packed your gear in there. Good luck 👍 I really like it ! Just get the springs built up somewhat for safety sake. You may also consider some 10 ply tires on the back as well. LORD above knows I have taken some riske with a overloaded pickup truck. Only for a short trip to deliver fire wood or haul some scrap for a few bucks though. Never took it out on the highway or got in hurry and waited till the next day at times to avoid traffic as well . If not your life, consider others who share the road .
Hey nice rig! Now some are commenting on weight. Be careful because if you load it down with gear and groceries you prolly will be over weight. Probably won't get a ticket but be damn careful driving. High center of gravity!!!! I bought a 1962 K20 with a cabover camper in Idaho and took a road trip in it back home to Texas. My camper is only 8 ' and I didnt have much gear since I flew up to Idaho. Was my daily for few years and still have it. Long story short take corners and curves SLOW! Have fun and enjoy it bud!!!!
Wow, nice little slide-in! Looks clean, too. As far as heat, just grab your Big Buddy heater and use that. I had a Toyota Chinook mini-motorhome and had that heater thats built into yours, froze buttski off!! Please do something with the bathroom; that gray will bum you out if you use the throne. Nice for a quick weekend thing, for the money I like it!!! Good luck!!
michael baka There’s a lot of information on the Internet about the Big Buddy and Little Buddy. Something important about using the genuine propane hose, not aftermarket if I recall
That furnace looks like the kind with no fan, just convection from the burner. No battery needed a Thermocouple goes to the thermostat and kicks on the burner. You have to light the pilot light through a tiny trap door. A lot less trouble than the fan kind, but watch for carbon monoxide when the big burner tank gets a hole burned through it. The fan kind is safer there as the metal squirrel cage sucks the fumes out anyway while the plastic one blows the hot air. A small hole “should” just suck air from the camper and blow it outside. That’s why they don’t make the old kind any more.
Just to clarifiy, ALWAYS crack a window or a vent when you run heat and pick up a cheap CO detector. Fume build up can kill you! Oh, yeah; get a plug in fan [12 volt] and run it to circulate the heat. Didn't I see one in Big Mama, by the windscreen??? There you go!
That thing is in surprisingly good shape for how old it is. Probably best to put some overload springs on the Chevy since there are on the heavy side. I used one for a couple years when boondocking. My company reimbursed for hotels and I just stay in the camper instead. Saved enough doing that to pay for the truck and camper. So a win for me.

I have been really considering it since my friends bought one a few weeks ago and I sat on the couch in there and was like I think I could live in one of these. Thanks for the interesting video. I love the layout. It even has a sofa with some extra cupboard over one side. You can still sleep a normal person. It still lets you have a closet. Seems like it may be only a bit over 10'. Even if it is 12' that is still impressive for a 30-40 year old non slide camper. About safety: Please remove and look at the back of Smoke and Propane/Carbon Monoxide (should do both) detectors, for their manufacture date. They last 10 years I think. You need to be covered for all three. They must be changed out periodically. If your battery dies your detector may not work. If your battery is low they should go off. truck camper magazine has details.

That camper's in excellent condition for the age. Just if you put it back on the same truck add some additional leaf springs and even air bags. It'll ride and handle so much better when loaded
Looks kind of like an old Travel Industries Inc. Dreamer. They used that paint scheme. Yes the dinette will convert into a bed just like the gaucho (couch/bed). She'll sleep six, so you need yourself a crew cab! 😊

I'm loving this we don't have them in the UK,I'm adding to this after some research we do have them but in very very small numbers or on one hand these are not usually found in the UK and and if found are specialist bought.The nearest was the fiberglass romahome a very basic tiny camper found on micro Honda pickups but that's long ago.So no we don't as a rule have these on UK roads.

I don't know anything about old camper appliances so someone might correct me, but a furnace won't continue pushing unburned propane into the room if the pilot goes out... I don't think you can say the same about a gas burner in an oven that age. Something that old with corrosion in the orifices might piss out when you are asleep and asphyxiate you. I'm not a big fan of the "Buddy Heaters", but they are cheap, efficient and won't kill you. Nothing ruins a fishing trip like waking up dead. ;-) Something about that retro interior though... awesome.
That one is larger than most, as where your couch is normally is the little kitchen. So by extending it, you get that couch bed, but have a "wet bath," or the whole bathroom is the shower area not separate from the commode. I used to not like a wet bath, but now that I am old sitting down while showering is not a bad idea.., making a commode a seat to sit on white bathing. It dries fairly quickly, so it is not too much of a hassle to have the whole bathroom area also be the shower stall.
you can use it, just turn it off before you go to sleep, also if you light 3-4 candles it will keep it warm enough while you sleep, but just use the ones in glass containers....
Back in the late 90's when me and my ex wife were living in a small house on a 5+ acre land out in the country that my mom's husband owns, there was one of those type of campers sitting out in the field on his property and it was falling apart. I was told that I could have it to part out and haul it away so I bought a used International Harvester School Bus from a guy who did work for the school district as a maintenance worker. I removed all the seats and built it into a R.V. and I did save the working stove/oven from the old camper and I put it in the kitchen area of my school bus R.V. I had running water, waste water tank, bathroom in the back with a fiberglass tub and the toilet had a pedal that you pushed with your foot to flush it and it also had a water hook up so that it did rinse itself out, it did not hold water like a normal toilet but had a large ball valve type of thing in it that opened when you pushed the spot pedal down to flush it. I had a large mattress and above it on each end I had two beds above my bed with one toddler mattress in one for our two kid's and a small Woden bench in front of the bunk bed set up and I bolted a new cast iron wood stove to the floor with the propor heat shields on the sides of it and on the floor under it and I had the propor exhaust pipe going out the roof and then a wall and a door that separated the front kitchen and driving area from the back living area. I think my bus was a 1984? It had disk brakes on all the wheels, it had a 345 V8 gas motor and stick shift manual transmission. If I ever was to do it again I'd keep the manual stick shift transmission and go with a Diesel engine and not a gas engine.in some ways I wish that I still had that old bus. We drove it around the USA and lived in it for about 2 year's
I used to be in the camper repair buiz. that said, this is a late 60's to early 70's rig. the seats have been nicely recovered and the floors redone. I would bet money that the wall in the toilet room DOES have watter damage. It's more common to find one with he damage than without. it looks to me that the "cab-over" are has water damage to the ceiling as well. it you see it in the wall, It's twice as bad as it looks. the ceiling panel may be delaminating do to internal condensation though.
we had one of these on the back of our gmc 2500 square body. To wood eventually rotted that was attached the the support legs and it fell over. Washington weather wreaks havoc on these older ones if not taken care of.
you've probably already figured this out but one must get a much larger extension cord than the one you are using because those average cords are for only using one thing at a time. They get hot plus the power drops a lot when using those. The longer the cord the more power you lose. Yes the bigger ones are expensive but much safer and get more power. worth the money.
Im an rv tech in alaska and ive done alot of roof jobs just from people putting tarps on their roofs and all thats up there is usually a rubber membrane roof or a tin roof but the rubber ones would wear a hole on the edges of the roof from wind and the tarp being abrasive with whatever sand dust rocks or ice under the tarp, in my opinion its better to leave that tarp off and check your roof and all the seals on transitions and windows, and just check them once or twice a year on the whole unit
Damn I have seen camper bed trailers but i didnt know they were this spacious.. Not too shabby. I honestly didnt know they had a bathroom and little stove. Thats perfect for going solo or even 2 people that get along really really well.
I had a camper like that on the back of my half ton one time before I beefed up the rear springs. Ever corner bringing it home felt like I was gonna roll over 😨
yeah i hope this rolling home on wheels doesnt roll very often. with almost this same set up a nomad went around a corner in my hometown, lost control, and killed a entire family from my church.
Overload springs are a must on a half ton to haul what must be at least 1500 lbs on that size slide-in. That's what I did on my 01 Silverado and it does just fine.
Heating with the stove is highly dangerous, as it has no air inlet it will likely consume the air in the camper and then it will produce co which you'll not notice when asleep and many people died because of that. I would suggest to have a carbon monoxide Warner in every camper.
That thing probably had a shower stall / toilet off the assembly line.. Most people don't know it's easy to find bed-campers with them stock.. IMO find fiberglass shower/toilet and install it..
Used to drive past an abandoned one of these on the way to work. Would have needed a lot of work and something big to move it that aren't common in the UK.
Someone get this man some more ad revenue so he can continue to hoard vehicles like a true rural Vermonter!

When I was a kid 60 years ago, this what virtually everyone used to go camping. I don't see slide in campers much anymore.
Leave the oven on for heat... My dad used to do that in his tiny apartment, I called it the "try not to die" heating method.
A good friend of mine was found dead....doing just that !
NEVER EVER use the oven to heat anything else than a pizza.
I don't think I would do this unless I had a carbon monoxide detector with me.
actually mine had an factory option infrared heater , heat wasnt a problem

AND.. the truck camper can go most any place that the truck will. great for back woods camping.

Had one 10 years ago. Lived in it for 2 years, my truck was a 94 gmc diesel 6.5. Even hauling the house I got 21 mpg

I had a large mattress and above it on each end I had two beds above my bed with one toddler mattress in one for our two kid's and a small Woden bench in front of the bunk bed set up and I bolted a new cast iron wood stove to the floor with the propor heat shields on the sides of it and on the floor under it and I had the propor exhaust pipe going out the roof and then a wall and a door that separated the front kitchen and driving area from the back living area. I think my bus was a 1984? It had disk brakes on all the wheels, it had a 345 V8 gas motor and stick shift manual transmission. If I ever was to do it again I'd keep the manual stick shift transmission and go with a Diesel engine and not a gas engine.in some ways I wish that I still had that old bus. We drove it around the USA and lived in it for about 2 year's

Insulation also keeps the heat out, I am so glad i insulated my garage it made a huge difference.

I used to be in the camper repair buiz. that said, this is a late 60's to early 70's rig. the seats have been nicely recovered and the floors redone. I would bet money that the wall in the toilet room DOES have watter damage. It's more common to find one with he damage than without. it looks to me that the "cab-over" are has water damage to the ceiling as well. it you see it in the wall, It's twice as bad as it looks. the ceiling panel may be delaminating do to internal condensation though.

we had one of these on the back of our gmc 2500 square body. To wood eventually rotted that was attached the the support legs and it fell over. Washington weather wreaks havoc on these older ones if not taken care of.

you've probably already figured this out but one must get a much larger extension cord than the one you are using because those average cords are for only using one thing at a time. They get hot plus the power drops a lot when using those. The longer the cord the more power you lose. Yes the bigger ones are expensive but much safer and get more power. worth the money.
That truck bed camper is pretty spacious.

Im an rv tech in alaska and ive done alot of roof jobs just from people putting tarps on their roofs and all thats up there is usually a rubber membrane roof or a tin roof but the rubber ones would wear a hole on the edges of the roof from wind and the tarp being abrasive with whatever sand dust rocks or ice under the tarp, in my opinion its better to leave that tarp off and check your roof and all the seals on transitions and windows, and just check them once or twice a year on the whole unit

Damn I have seen camper bed trailers but i didnt know they were this spacious.. Not too shabby. I honestly didnt know they had a bathroom and little stove.

How did you tie it down? Did you have actual hardware mounted to your frame or just run straps around the bed and under to the frame?
I had a camper like that on the back of my half ton one time before I beefed up the rear springs. Ever corner bringing it home felt like I was gonna roll over 😨
yeah i hope this rolling home on wheels doesnt roll very often. with almost this same set up a nomad went around a corner in my hometown, lost control, and killed a entire family from my church.
Just put a ton of wheel spacers on it swap out the suspension from a 2500 lol
Overload springs are a must on a half ton to haul what must be at least 1500 lbs on that size slide-in. That's what I did on my 01 Silverado and it does just fine.

Heating with the stove is highly dangerous, as it has no air inlet it will likely consume the air in the camper and then it will produce co which you'll not notice when asleep and many people died because of that. I would suggest to have a carbon monoxide Warner in every camper.
That thing probably had a shower stall / toilet off the assembly line.. Most people don't know it's easy to find bed-campers with them stock.. IMO find fiberglass shower/toilet and install it..
