Winter Off-Grid in a Vintage Truck Camper

  • I spent two nights in my 1972 Saturn Truck Camper at an Off Grid camping site about 5 miles from my home. The temps got down to single digits overnight and a snow storm was already beginning to send the snow. The next day after I left we got 12 inches of snow!
I used my Buddy heater connected to a 20lb propane tank to keep warm. I made sure to have the roof vents cracked open and a carbon monoxide detector nearby.
What a great time creating memories!

Thank you for sharing your grief. This helps me 1. because I'm refurbishing a 1979 imperial rambler..
to live in after losing everything. 2. The rambler helps me from thinking too much.

I lived in my 9.5 1974 Sunline camper for over a year. In the winter, when it got real cold, I’d sleep in the bunk over the dinette. Tight but toasty. I took most of my showers at work to save on my 20 water tank. Had access to a dump station. It enabled me to save enough money to travel around the country, years ago, when drivers used to be courteous. That’s when one could just pull off the side of the road and sleep without being robbed or bothered. Or stop at Mom & Pop gas station and ask if We could stay there the night. Watching this video brings back memories. Thanks

@@adventureswithrick8032 I still have that camper and truck. Last year, it was broken into and trashed, (we think tree trimmers for the electric company!) If I can’t fix al the damage they did, we will look for another Sunline just like the one we have. The newer truck campers are made for super and crew cabs, ( mine is a standard) so the overhang is too long, making if it impossible to see overhead branches when on back roads and stop lights when I pull up close enough to trip the light! The new ones are also too high and don’t have a front window. And, they are too expensive.
I put a norcold boat 12/120 volt frig in, so I wouldn’t have to be level when I park. (Wide shoulders are not level) I also put an evaporator In place of the vent in the center of the camper, also 12 volt. It would drop the temp inside 10 to 15 degrees. In the desert, when it was 105 outside, it was only 90 inside! For communication, we had a CB (tram diamond 60 23 channel SSB, which I still have) All of our traveling back then, we only stayed in a campground one day, and that was at circus circus in Vegas. We even stayed near the runway at the Vegas airport. That was before they put up fences. Pismo beach was a party beach on the weekends, but during the week, we would be the only vehicle on the whole beach! Couldn’t believe a video I saw recently on Pismo beach.
Family is grown, and we want to travel again, but are concerned because of how violent our country has become. Towns we stayed at are so bad, we will never go their again. We contacted H.O.G. (Harleys Owners Group) to find out if certain roads or towns have crime problems. We plan to try the routes and towns they recommended and will stay away from the others.

I was never able to see the inside and I always thought it was so cool with the "faux tail fins" on the back holding the rear lights. Sorry buddy, you need to educate yourself, it’s not as simple as reaching out.
I lost my son to Suicide 7 years ago, I feel your pain but I encourage you to really educate yourself, your thoughts are typical and understandable, but simply incorrect.
Your brain is part of your body, suicidal death is no different than dying from cancer, the brain is not functioning properly, like a cancerous liver, you simply don’t fix it,
Sorry to be harsh, it’s simply wrong to say the results are worse after the suicidal death, you don’t know the pain.

I am a pastor and deal with this quite a bit too. I understand about the brain being an organ just like anything else. Losing a family member is tough and suicide effects so many. Thanks for expressing your opinion. I know you speak from your experience and I speak from mine. I don’t just speak from one experience and maybe you don’t. We can agree the pain for both the one who dies and those who remain is immense. I smiled the other day seeing a Facebook memory of him and was sad that he is gone. @@adventureswithrick8032 thanks, being a pastor I’m sure you do deal with this, and knowing that makes me want you to learn more. Unfortunately I have dealt with several suicidal death in my life, your comments in the video show me that you do need more education, especially if you’re counselling people. I have no faith, none, I simply don’t believe in old stories, I’m sure you find comfort in your beliefs but educating yourself from a thanatology perspective coupled with your faith based beliefs will give you a different perspective, one that reflects a modern understanding of suicidal death, grief and death. Remember the bible calls suicidal dealt a sin, wrong!
