What I love about the Thunderhawk is how it embodies something that got slowly eroded away by media depictions of 40k:
It's both an assault lander and a groungs to space/space to ground vehicle. At least as stuff used to be depicted (particularly by forgeworld) most assault aircraft are pure aeronautica (atmospheric aircraft) and orbital transports are huge machines not generally capable of deployment into combat. This is supposed to make direct assault from orbit a somewhat uniquely Space Marine thing. The Astra Militarum typically lands in uncontested areas (typically far away from any enemy presence) and takes days, if not weeks to establish landing zones/beachheads were their forces are landed and from were they are deployed to their actual tasks.

"The craft decended rapidly, faster then anything Sertas Balsta had ever seen in 10 years service in the guard. There where white contrails flowing off the edges of blunt, practical wings and the exhaust of its engines. He remembered what it was when its sillhouete became a shadow against the desert sands and its yellow livery burning in the sun like a deliverance of intent. He fell to his knees and formed The Emperors Aquilla on his chest as he realized what it was as he remembered the picts he saw as a child. The thunderhawk roared over the artillery lines, a large, black fist adorning its doors as the massive thunderhawk sang past, angrily heading towards the Ork, all along the lines cheers where roaring into the sky as another thunderhawk passed, and another, and another, company banners being waved franticly to proclaim loyalty, some troops laughed with tears in their eyes and screaming in almost zealous joy. The Emperors Angels of Death had arrived"

Own a Thunderhawk for home defense, since that's what Robute Guilliman, son of our Founding Father the Emperor intended.
Four heretics break into my hab unit. "By the Throne!" as I perform the rituals to awaken my aircraft's machine spirit and start winding up my Twin Heavy Bolter cannons.
Blow into chunky smears the first man along with the door he was coming through before I even lift off cleverly hidden front yard landing pad.
The pressure from the Thunderhawk's downthrust upon lift knocks the other three invaders prone, along with shattering all of my windows and setting off the entire hab block's car alarms.
Focus and blast my Turbo-Laser Destructor but since it isn't warmed up it misses entirely, incinerating my neighbor's canine... and my neighbor's hab unit.
Our remaining weapon system is a resort to the Hellstrike Missile Battery in spite of it being an air-to-air platform, "For the Emperor!" I cry, overriding and engaging.
Fire everything, only 25% of the missiles obliterate both my home and two more of the heretics, the remaining 75% find other targets including a nearby powerstation accidentally.
Though I am out of weapons on this humble Thunderhawk, I am not without arsenal, or alone... I smirk.
Pivot yaw to rotate hovering Thunderhawk to face rearward and deploy my 30 chainsword wielding Space Marines directly on top of the last terrified traitor.
He is eviscerated before the klaxon alarms begin blaring in response to the many explosions. The hab block is a burning ruins filled with screams of lost and wounded, but is secure.

i mean we see only 2 THawks shot down in the game, yes? 1 in the beggining and 1 during the [SPOILER]. Unless i am missing something. Both of which are destroyed within the reasonable parameters. First one's not destroyed from the outside but pried the door open (which seems a little stupid tbh) after which enemies get inside.
Second one's either sabotaged or destroyed by psyker abilities, meaning conventional armor woudn't be of much help anyway.

I can’t think of any other 40k content creator that has done something like this! I hope this isn’t going to be the only one you create? Hopefully you plan on making more similar content on other 40k vehicles!

I think one of my favorite concepts for a transport ship came from Hammer's Slammers. The lightly armed and shielded transport ships for the Planetary Siege Tanks known as BOLO's carried the vehicles mounted upside down in a similar position to the Thunderhawk. That way the BOLO's weapons, sensors and shields could be used as a force multiplier during transit.
To the unknowing, you'd think, oh that's nice... But in the Slammer universe, that means an enemy fleet going after a handful of 'unescorted transports' were likely to be decimated, including capital ships.

I have a question about attrition and losses!!! In the space marine 2 campaign I would assume there are at least between 100-200 marines dying in the campaign in the system to the tyranids and chaos which accounts for at least 1/10th of the ultramarine’s total chapter strength. That is a crazy amount of strength to lose in a matter of days. How do these chapters replenish their units? How quickly?

After going through training and surgery Marines will serve in the Scout core until they are slotted into an Company, be it that they get along or that the company has some vacancies open up. The Scouts number more than 1000 and are not considered part of that flimsy 1000 Marine count.

Space Marine 2 takes place in the Dark Imperium period, so at that point (upgraded) marines can be mass produced again. They have to keep founding new chapters just so they can stick to the 1000 limit.

    • @piedpiper1172
      @piedpiper1172 Місяць тому +1

Prior to the final mission you can see about 83 surviving, combat ready members of 2nd Company.
We do not see all that many dead marines through the campaign, and hear of only one squad (some of whom are the same ones we find) being lost.
I suspect, at least before , that the casualties are way, way lower than 1-200. Closer to 15, plus or minus 5 more critically injured.
Also, combat ineffective and actually killed are quite different for space marines. They can recover from incredible wounds if evacuated, and even then the most seriously wounded will be placed into dreadnoughts.
It is undoubtedly an usually costly theater, but there was an unusually dangerous complication (on top of the Tyranids) to the theater as well.

It’s ironic how a cut down and budget version of the stormbird ended up as a mainstay of the astartes navy, which again the thunderhawk was originally intended to be a mere stopgap inorder to provide the legions with the necessary resources of stormbirds which were much lager being able to carry fifty fully armed and equipped space marines, one rhino or five dreadnoughts or a complete mixture of the lot ie one dreadnought twenty marines and a rhino armed with a twin lascannon. Not only that but. The stormbird was also shielded housing two ion shield generators onboard but due to the stormbirds complexity as well as cost in terms of resources and man hours to produce a single ship, you could easily have built three thunderhawk for the cost of one stormbird and not only that but the thunderhawk gunship was much more ideally suited to the much smaller unit deployments of a chapter who might only end up deploying a hundred or so marines to a given battle and whilst not entirely comfortable or safe a thunderhawk can at least carry thirty marines in a pinch with marines even standing in the cockpit of course but such situations and procedures tend to be fairly rare.
Not only that but the thunderhawk was and is ideally suited as a void fighter craft being that its ventral mounted turbo laser destructor is capable of punching through even the hull armor of a space ship along with the ability to land boarding parties onto an enemy ship made it idealistic as a void fighter craft

The greatest thing the Imperium ever did was to perfect the Infinite Ammunition Bin. This technology, which enables an ammo magazine to carry nearly infinite amounts of ammunition, is one of the cornerstones of the Imperium's continued success. This is how a Boltgun magazine can carry 30 or more rounds, when from the outside, it only appears to have room for a handful.

I would love to see imperial knights and maybe the ways they are deployed. I know that they can be deployed with drop keeps, but they have very little lore. A creative way I saw that dealt with in the imperial knight freeblade gane was by using a thunder hawk or something similar to deploy them. If you want to see it, it's used for the games' pvp mode.

... so no seatbelts or restraints. Very Grimdark. Imagine a Thunderhawk getting shot down, spinning uncontrollably in the sky. Now imagine the chaotic scene inside the assault hold with all those astartes, now also spinning, getting tossed around like several ton soda cans. Throw a dreadnought in there for fun. They do infact have restraints/seats and mag locks that hold the marines in place it just depends on the thunderhawk transport. And what is expected at the other end. Are they doing a simple meeting with locals for recruitment of aspirants or are they hot dropping into a active hot lz or are they doing a stealth insert. Just depends and nothing is standard I'm wh40k, everything is basically bespoke.
