The problem is that there is not a generic Imperial Guard regiment. Even the number of soldiers in a regiment can go between 3 or 4 thounsand at full strength to 20.000 at full strength. Excellent work. One small quibble is that when showing off the weapons of the marines you used the primaris cawl pattern bolt rifles, where as the firstborn marines, especially the ultramarines would be using the shorter Godwyn pattern which also has no scope
@@balazsvarga1823 Yeah I dont really like the scopes on the primaris bolters. The only real quibble I had with the old bolters was a lack of a rear sight post
Visual aim aids, scopes or iron sights, would be only needed if the marine's autosenses got damaged, as a backup. Otherwise they got machine spirit assisted targeting.
Assuming they are wearing their helmet. Cause there are the times when they decide not to. And even if it barely ever gets used an iron sight is still helpful in those times when normal means fail@@balazsvarga1823
Reminds me of the time GW straight up sold a box set for the *entire Ultramarines Chapter* for like £7000 back in the late 2000s. Like, who the fuck gets up in the morning and thinks "oh boy, I really feel like buying OVER ONE THOUSAND MODELS today!"
What really surprised me was I consider myself new to Warhammer I'm more into the lore than anything else but as I watched the video I asked, "Do they not deploy with imperial guardsmen?" While I imagine this can happen on occasion I just think it would be an extremely weird idea that they don't supplement their forces with regular guardsmen
They usually arrive at different times and since the space Marines travel separately it takes a big battle where many forces meet up on one world for a campaign to get them working together. Space Marines tend to do their own inscrutable goals the Guard is involved everywhere but does not often know what the Marines know so they are playing catch up a lot.
After millions of Guardsmen have laid down their lived for a cause, then the Space Marines show up to clean up what is left over and take all the glory...
Space Marines get sent when millions of guardsmen cant get the job done. 99.99% of battles are the trusty old guard. A 1000 chapters with ~1000 each is around a million marines for the whole galaxy, while theres trillions and trillions of regular human soldiers holding the line.
You sort of have it in reverse. The Imperial Guard _ARE_ the standing Army of the Imperium. They are the generic force that protects ALL Imperial worlds. Space Marine are the Mega Elite mobile strike force (i.e just like the Marines of the US army, hence the name) that moves around the Galaxy meeting the MOST urgent threats the Imperium faces.
I've been watching since the THFE days in 2016 with the massive battles series. Your Total War Warhammer videos were actually what got me into warhammer in general, so it's very nice to see the channel come full circle back to its roots. This is awesome
What an comprehensive and inspiring video! Congratulations, fantastic work!!!! I'd love to see more of these. Maybe a Cadian Shock Troops vid? That'd be interesting.
I am REAAALY excited for how far we can push this thing. Doing episodes on the Tyranid and the Orks would be super fun and not something I think 40K fans have ever seen at scale outside of the stylized artbook illustrations.
The composition of a chapter have more in comon of a British´s batallion in the napoleonic era (1000 men divided in 10 companies the first was the veteran granadier and the 10th was ligth infantry) than the late Roman empire´s legions.
I don't know why, but the best history content creators I usually watch suddenly all uploading 40k content... Match made in heaven. FOR THE EMPEROR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finaly! an interesting 40k video. William King wrote a the great first 3 Space Wolf novels that show the rise of an aspirant through the ranks. "Space Wolf", "Ragnars Claw", "Grey Hunter". The Blood Angels have a good aspirant book too. The new book dedicated to it's chapter master. The book is just called "Dante".
I'm a big fan of Warhammer 40,000 and I've always been fascinated by the Space Marines. This video was really informative and it helped me to better understand how Space Marine chapters are structured. I also learned a lot about the Ultramarines, which is one of my favorite chapters.
Honestly an amazing job done, whilst it’s easy to pull random numbers out of a hat or have little diagrams, it’s far far more impressed when you see the actual scale of just how large a single space marine chapter and even then, many people might never see a space marine in their entire lives, and again people fail to understand or even respect or even fear at just how powerful a space marine truly is, considering that an entire hive city on Armageddon was held by one command squad and two other squads of black templars who whilst yes were all cut down to a man and were supported by titans, the fact remains that only thirty or so marines were able to fend off an ork invasion all on their own and again that’s not to diminish the heroisms of the titan pilots as well as the countless men and women in the guard and militia forces who gave their lives to defend their homes and city, but the fact of the matter remains, hellsreach wasn’t even considered a proper hive city, it was large yes, but most of its infrastructure was geared towards shipping and refining materials, not a full on invasion like a dedicated hive city ie hades hive and even then its walls were not even walls but a concrete fence to keep the elements out and a few anti aircraft guns to keep some of the larger pests away and yet despite the fact that over half of the hive was completely destroyed, the imperials still won the battle no less and again people forget that before the Horus heresy the space marines were considered the standard form of infantry, imagine an entire army of halo Spartans or Terran marines, all of them fully armed and equipped, along side entire legions of titans and knights In support as well as having access to far more powerful and devastating weapons compared to what the imperium already possess 😂
I’m new to the 40K lore but I’ve fallen in love with the twisted futuristic Paladin vibe the Ultramarines give. The more I read and learn about this universe the greater it gets
Ultramarines aren't really paladins, they're roman themed. Check out the black templars, they are crusade themed. Dark Angels are also knightly themed.

Loved this! One thing I would say, is sergeants in reserve and scout companies are typically veterans of the chapter as well, who may not be 1st company or have been and have chose to take the daunting task of leading the chapters newer Astartes!
A minor correction: You mentioned at 4:35 that Robot Girlyman is dead but he very much is alive in the setting. This is only a small mistake though and you guys did an awesome job.
Space Marine squads are 10 men strong by default, regardless of company or role until you reach heavily specialized units like Eliminators or Centurions. They can break into 5 man units, but that’s only temporary and not part of the formal organization structure. Lieutenants are part of the Captain’s command structure, and his command squad has an *assigned* Apothecary and Chaplain. They’re not there by default, because within a chapter, the Apothecaries, Chaplains, and Librarians are a different internal entity. And that command squad is usually (at least in compliant chapters) made up of the 1st Squad of the company. 1st Squads are veteran squads, that sergeant is next in line for leadership of the company, be it as a Lt or as the future Captain himself.
@@Luynux primaris are retarded, which is probably why this video is set in M41. But even then, the 3 man squads are just a deployment thing, not an organisation thing. So the squad is still 10 men but they are split up during deployment.
Well, I enjoyed watching stuff about the Romans, so Space Romans are naturally the next course. When do we get to Space Crusaders, i.e. Black Templars?
Great video! Just some things I'm wondering about: 7:28 The chapter master is not answering their Primarch?! 18:33 is not the Stormtalon configuration, it's the Stormhawk Interceptor
Space Marines are special forces, used for surgical strikes, special missions and objectives. The vast majority of the Imperium's army is made up by the Imperial Guard, who are standard-issue humies. Having said that, unofficially, there are Chapters of Space Marines that circumvent these limited unit sizes. Black Templars and Space Wolves do this. Unit limitations were imposed after a galaxy-spanning civil war, brought about by huge legions of Space Marines fighting each other.
The Imperium spans roughly a million worlds. There are about 1000 chapters with about 1000 marines each, some more, some less. So there's about 1 space marine per planet in the Imperium. Most of the Imperium is not expected to be defended by Space Marines, they are expected to be defended by local Planetary Defense Forces and the Astra Militarum. Space Marines are elite shock troops that are deployed specifically to the most extreme warzones. Additionally, there are many other elite forces such as the Adepta Sororitas, Mechanicus forces from Skitarii to Titans, Imperial Knights, etc... that help fill in the gaps that can't be covered by the Space Marines.
The numbers make sense when you consider that it's a single chapter, with 1000 chapters existing, and the fact that space marines are merely a single cog in the vast imperial war machine
I hope you touch on how the Ultramarine successor chapters like the Novamarines and the Sons of Guilliman can be called upon to act as additional companies for the Ultramarines and vice-versa
Eh, I reckon the only problem with the chapter size, is that Guilliman didn't account for his kids and nephews being self-centred pricks, who can't get along. As well as the lack of powerful authorities, like himself, not being around to expand the number of chapters as needed. 1000 marines is plenty for most jobs, and the jobs that it isn't enough for can have more chapters thrown at it, in theory. Nothing is really stopping, say the Black Templers, from having extremely close ties with several other chapters like: The Ochre Crusaders, The Onyx Paladins, The Ebon Hospitillars, The Sable Teutons, and the Jet Chevaliers. Save for the lack of accomadating foundings.
@@lawaern3474 my guess is he didn’t expect all of his brothers to die/go missing or for himself to get put into a coma for 10,000 years and for the chapters to basically have to govern themselves
the dreadnaughts having blood angel iconography was confusing, and some of the 2d ultramarines having weird weapons was also confusing, but this is an otherwise very good video, would love to see you make a vid on orks
The Ultramarines are known for being non compliant to the codex in terms of their size. It's also nearly impossible to know the true size of a chapter because they tend to be spread out under different Captains.
If anyone would comply with the Codex Astartes, written by Roboute Guilliman, Primarch of the Ultramarines, it would be the Ultramarines. They are about as codex-compliant as any chapter can get. They do call upon their successor chapters often so function more like a large chapter, but the chapter itself is not by any means non-compliant.

@@Viljuskar They are actually immortal. While the lore is kind of all over the place with how they age they are functionally immortal. If you need in lore evidence look to the book salamander. It had a space marine over 10k years old but he was pretty fucked up. Yeah immortal but if you are fighting hundreds of battles every century eventually you will die.

Thank you for finally covering this military in true historical detail. Its so hard on hab worlds to find unbiased sources like this that isnt just stories from the Ecclesiarcy (not that I question the god emperor of course) or even worse propaganda from the worshippers of the nine devils of the outer hells (not that we have any here of course). I feel so much safer knowing the emperors angels are so well organised and able to protect us. A video on a generic Guard regiment would be amazing.
Guardsmen are like flies in the wind..
@@flonkplonk1649 And yet they hold the line. :)
The problem is that there is not a generic Imperial Guard regiment. Even the number of soldiers in a regiment can go between 3 or 4 thounsand at full strength to 20.000 at full strength. For GW a Imperial Guard Regiment is more a collection of soldiers that a standar formation like a space marine chapter.
So Invicta can´t do the same as this video or the composition of the Roman Legion o a Spatan force.
Due to diverse recruitment systems there are like dozens of variations of "standard" IG regiments.
@@FatGouf I haven't really read a codex since maybe 5th Edition, but back then it was stated in one of the codeses that the Cadians were a standard many other planetary militaries followed. So they were offered as the default, which was also what you'd see at a store.

I’m 8 months late but a few notes:
1. If this is before the Fall of Cadia there won’t be any lieutenants as that rank didn’t return until Guuilliman did
2. Scouts do not have the Black carapace so they do not have the full suit of upgrades as full battle brothers and Loyalist marines no longer use Autocannons
3. The Ultramarines are not the strictest adherents to the Codex, they actually break from it in several ways
4. The strictest adherents to the Codex are likely the Red Scoprions who treat it as a religious tome
Ooh, what ways do the ultras break from the doctrine? Genuinely curious as I've started getting into 40k lore recently

This wasn't something I expected, but I definitely needed it; I've been able to understand much better the functioning of the companies, their formation and their equipment, thanks to this video. I'm a fan of the Space Wolves, but without a doubt the Ultramarines are the easiest example to understand the Codex Astartes (in any case, if you make a video for each of the loyal chapters of the first foundation, I would be happy, since they all have their peculiarities).

One small quibble is that when showing off the weapons of the marines you used the primaris cawl pattern bolt rifles, where as the firstborn marines, especially the ultramarines would be using the shorter Godwyn pattern which also has no scope
Bolters don't really need scopes, they got integrated sensors that connect to the power armour.
I’d love to find out how the post Cadia chapters are organised and how the Primaris marines fit in with the existing organisations
One of the most well presented videos I've seen anywhere on UA-cam. Wonderful stuff. As a 40k fan, I was mesmerised.
They definitely get mixed in with other forces. We talk about that in part 2 for the Battle Companies.
Ultramarine Dreads with Blood Angel iconography... WHAT IS THIS HERESY?!?!?!
On a more serious note, amazing video!

Every chapter has their very own vibe! Or the Adeptus Mechanicus! The Necrons.. etc.

Lieutenants were not a thing in M41
what about the games ? where they have squads of 3 ?
@@Luynux primaris are retarded, which is probably why this video is set in M41.
But even then, the 3 man squads are just a deployment thing, not an organisation thing. So the squad is still 10 men but they are split up during deployment.

These numbers are so ridiculously small for an empire spanning the entire galaxy.
That’s why you have the imperial guard
I mean, one chapter can turn the tide of a war, and the imperial military isnt just the chapters, but also the Astra Militarum.
The size of 1000 men still does not make any sense at all ...
@@wizewizard1840* Laughs in dark angel*
Tbf it varies at lot, I guess the cop out answer is that the decision was made so that one chapter never became too powerful compared to the rest
@@stillmyboy6708 I think it was more that no one individual can command too much power. So to avoid black legion 2: Electric Boogaloo.
@@lawaern3474 my guess is he didn’t expect all of his brothers to die/go missing or for himself to get put into a coma for 10,000 years and for the chapters to basically have to govern themselves
