I usually self service my Van Staal reels with the manufacturers grease, but I always add some 90wt Mobil1 synthetic gear oil. Makes a world of difference in making the reel way smoother and constant, especially in cooler weather. Wondering if the same method of service with some synthetic gear oil in the lower unit would make the crank smoother. I've noticed that the out of the box from day one it is a little rough in pedaling, and it's not a smooth or constant crank. Not suggesting to fill it with gear oil, but using only a small "reservoir" of oil to keep the prop shaft gear lubed. Being you've had yours apart, do you think the seals would keep the heavy gear oil contained?
I did this to my LibertyOutdoors independence 131 pedal drive. And havent had any problems with leakage. My buddy did his same kayaks drive, it leaked. Could be that the gear box isn't completely tight, of could be he used cheaper, fluid.🤷♂️ but, mine stays lubed, smoother pedalling and is quieter, than from factory. Significantly quieter.
Great video. My drive started to make a noise from the head unit and lock up. What do you think is causing the noise and locking up? I wonder if a gear is chipped or something is broken in wide the head unit. Or could this be simply due to the lack of marine grease? Thank you!
I bought a pedai drive system for a Perception Pescador Pilot 12. I installed it on my kayak and when you pedal to go forward it goes in reverse. To move forward I had to pedal like I was going in reverse. Do you know why its doing this and how to fix it?
Good Video, I did the same with my Perception Pilot. They appear to have the same drive and internals.
thank you very much, because I am curious about the machine's working system inside. good video

Not sure, all there is, is gears inside there so most likely a gear.
Call WS customer service, see if they can help you out
just got the pd! super excited, do i need to pre grease prior of going out on it for the first time? or anything else to it besides installing.
You should be fine to go out, its greased from the factory. Just grease thoroughly as soon as you can.
