I played the FFXIV Beta and despite all the problems, was really psyched they kept improving it. I couldn't have imagined how far they'd come. A Realm Reborn was great for a game slapped together in eighteen months. Heavenward was great for an MMORPG. Stormblood was great storytelling for a game of any genre. Shadowbringers was great compared to most novels. Endwalker wrapped it all up in a bow.
Day's before you could get a reliable connection, and then there was the auction house. On top of that initially The Weeping Hollow was initially seamlessly connected to New Tristram via the bridge, which meant I and others accidentally kited some monsters back to town and then found we were unable to defend ourselves. An early patch was required to fix that little snafu.
Oh right, BF4 was going up against COD GHOSTS of all entries. It was less that Dice handed over the win as much as it was both of them going "no, you have it."

And the 1.0 subscribers even got their character names in a special thanks in the game credits, as well as a few unique cosmetics if they returned to 2.0. One of many acts of humility and gratitude during the relaunch which earned Yoshi P's team a tremendous amount of well-deserved good will.

There's really no way that #1 would possibly be anything other than FFXIV. Those other two games just kept getting updates until they set things right, FFIXV literally started over from scratch under a new team to fix all the things the first development team did wrong.

An example for the monitization is that you HAVE TO PAY $10+ monthly for a game that you ALREADY paid for. It's a monthly subscription for around 500 hours of story content alone and basically limitless other content. The first three expansions are also free to play through their free trial. Also, any MMO is monetized because they have to pay for servers. Free to Play and Buy to Play aggressively push Pay-to-Win features in their shops with Free-to-Play especially going after whales. The subscription model keeps their cash shop as cosmetic.

I've left comments like this for years, there's no passion, we have no idea what these "game journalists" actaully play or grew up playing, shaping their gaming tastes. Jules used to have an awesome channel called Tiger Fucking Uppercut where they played, reviewed, and collabed with other youtubers, usually with a gaming challenge of whatever game they were checking out. So I know at some point Jules had a real passion for all things gaming. This channel is just a business like IGN or any other soulless company using games as their avenue.

The comedic debacle that was FFXIV 1.0 was all the more bizarre because it's not like Square were going into the MMO business as some sort of noobie devs. FFXI was an absolutely stunningly successful MMORPG for over a decade by the time they totally whiffed with FFXIV 1.0 I was (and still am) a day 1 retail account subscriber to FFXIV. But the initial release was so awful that it's no surprise you have the game as it is now as your #1 in this list. Don't get me wrong here. I can't stand 50% of the game. But the fact that I love the other 50% means there is way more than enough stuff to keep me happy and subbed for about 9 months or so every year. I just take breaks regularly to let myself miss the game before resubbing.
I feel like I must have played D3 right away after launch, because I remember the auction house, which was the only complaint that I had... Once that was removed, and the drop rates were rebalanced, it was a good game. It definitely didn't take until the expansion to become good, but maybe it became great. That would depend on individual opinion.
They improved D3 in the first big updates, but it was still pretty boring and just replaying the main story on loop. It went from Bad to Bland. Reaper of Souls was when they added a LOT more replayable procedurally generated content that made the game massively more fun for a much longer lifespan, so I'd say RoS is when the game actually became a game worth its pricetag. Which is funny because I'm pretty sure I got it for free from the 6-month WoW sub promotion with Tyrael horse mount.
@@jaeusa160 I think D3 was the first Diablo game to have an "end game". Playing through the story was all there was in D1 and D2, unless you count meta goals. With most RPGs people are content with just the story. So I never expected D3 to do more. For me, it was a good game as soon as the AH was gone--probably my favorite Diablo game (of all time, seeing how the series is going). The rifts were kind of boring, but it did give people something to do, I suppose.

Building the gameplay from the ground up, removing or rewriting story elements (e.g. removing the kiss between Sonic and Elise) and most importantly, taking its time to iron out ANY bugs and glitches. I have never bought or played a COD game. I realized from the getgo that the main selling point, which is pvp, is the same thing every year, but with a couple "new" things. They are no different than any EA sports game. As for Battlefield, war shooters and battle royales are really overrated and don't interest me at all. The only one I enjoy is TitanFall 2.

Plenty are just released in a half complete state and the people that buy the game initially are basically the second round of investment for the developers who will then go on to finish the game using the money they’ve made from launch
I think people over praise and over reference the come back that battlefield 4 had cause to me it was the beginning of a bad trend that DICE and Publisher EA has milked to death as it made it seem that as long as they fix it eventually the very crime of selling it in a defective state is forgivable and is acceptable.
Game comebacks are nice, but theyre also a bad thing. Theyre telling devs its ok to release trash as long as you keep working on it. Games should be good on day one, not three years later. Any minor issues can be patched out later, the bigger ones need to be addressed before release, which is why delaying a game when it's unfinished is important. The only reason to release an unfinished game is only for short-term profit.

Final Fantasy XIV was always subscription based, never free to play outside of trials, not sure why you said that changed with 2.0.
At the end of its life, the original FF14 stopped having a subscription. This was before A Realm Reborn was released.

Yes, Starfield is a "bug-fest" despite launching and still with the least bugs of any bethesda game since even before Morrowind, maybe even since they were founded. The thing that people don't like about starfield is the loading screens. Other than that, it is a great game. People really don't bother even considering this.

@@LaNextNotchPoisonoak Cyberpunk is amazing and Fallout 76 isn't my cup of tea. That doesn't make it garbage. If it was, it wouldn't still be active as we can see what happens to truly bad games. They don't last.
Fallout is arguable, sure. I would love to hear what makes Cyberpunk a bad game though. It is better than most, if not every game on this list. Battlefield 4, For Honor, Star Wars, Sea of Thieves better than Cyberpunk? Fallout 76 is better than a couple of those even.

You would think so, wouldn't you? A few games on here have me scratching my head. I thought Fallout 76, Cyberpunk and No Man's Sky would be top 5. Cyberpunk should be #1 by a long shot. It kind of makes this list irrelevant without it.
