Rule #1 when playing old games (or old anything) is to put yourself into that time mentality. If you are playing a 2001 game and expecting it to be like a 2024 game, you are in for a bad experience...but then again, YOU ARE GOING IT WRONG!!
Agree. Big part of the fun for me in playing retro games is that I'm essentially getting into a time machine and experiencing what gaming used to be like back then. If you're constantly comparing them to modern games, you lose so much of their charm.
Nah Far Cry 3 is still totally worth it! I played it a couple of years ago and it still holds up. Start here in the FC franchise! It was one hell of a fun ride!
I re-played Far Cry 3 about 6 months ago and it was great, it just reminded me of how great Vaas is. I'm not even a huge Far Cry fan, I didn't start playing the series until around the time Far Cry 5 was out.
Nope, I'm 45 and I just played through the Kingdom Hearts final mix and it was more awesome than when I was 23. I'm working my way through the whole series and I'm an unapologetic fanboy.
Replaying it with my kids and watching their joy & wonder as I finished the 1st and 2nd games took me back. They even cried at the ending of the 1st. Lucky for them, all I had to do was press start & go back to the main menu whereas I had to wait 3-4 years for the next installment
I was an adult, almost 30 years old when I first played through the Kingdom Hearts games a few years ago, I really enjoyed playing them and I even went back recently to play the first game again 😃
Farcry 3 & 1 are like the junk food of farcrys but vass stil slaps the fact hes alive & in 6 is just insanity if only ubisoft took its definition seruiosly
I wouldn’t play the original Kingdom Hearts because on the PS2 version the camera is controlled with the bumper buttons and you can’t skip cutscenes. Other than that adults should absolutely play Kingdom Hearts. Sora is a GOAT, and KH is a textbook action game.
I actually returned to the ps2 version last year, cause sadly only they have the fantastic german dub that was sadly removed from final mix. And even with the flaws and missing content (though in KH1 not much of a lost), it was so totally worth it.
I still play Goldeneye 64 and its multiplayer with my brother when he visits sometimes even including this year (2024). We've been playing that thing (and Turtles in Time) together since we were kids, lol.
@@kretschmannjonathan6237 Exactly. I always hate the term "good for the time". A great game is always a great game. It doesn't simply "get bad" because time passes. Look at all the iconic and legendary films and tv shows from the past.
Uncharted is still a great game, especially if you have all the weapons and cheats unlocked for a fun speed run. The only BAD part will always be the Jet Ski stages especially the waterfall area.
I just 100% goldeneye re-release on Xbox and it brought me way back, such an awesome game with killer level design and difficulty. They literally don’t make games as amazing as this 007 goat
On Goldeneye (and Perfect Dark), I've always changed it to one of the alternate control layouts, with look on the stick and move on the C-buttons, which made the controls fairly similar to the Turok series (which I played a fair amount of prior to Goldeneye being released). Basically, it makes it so the controls are in reversed hands compared to modern FPS, but it still feels less janky than the default controls.
3 old games from the SNES that still hold up today are the Donkey Kong Country trilogy. I play through those once every couple years and are proof old games can still be great
I thought 007 made the best of the trident N64 controller. Considering we weren't quite to dual thumbsticks, Rare made it work anyway. It's not great trying to play it now, though. On the other hand, the music is still great, and it holds an important place in console history as being one of the first massive FPS hits for N64 that wasn't a PC port. It solidified that FPS games designed for console were viable, which allowed games like Halo and CoD to later take off.
Beavis and Butt-Head In Virtual Stupidity Back during the mid 2000's I was a big fan of the Animated Duo with reruns of the show on MTV 2 alongside reruns of fellow MTV cartoon Aeon Flux heck I'm still associated with show 19 years later
Completely disagree on FarCry 3. If anything, that's the game to play. They got the winning formula with this one. And I didn't even touch the sequels since they didn't seem to advance the franchise in any meaningful way.
I thought the final boss in Far Cry 2 was not being able to finish the game because your save files became corrupted and the game crashed after you completed 60% of it...
I'll definitely replay Kingdom Hearts 1. I just replayed it recently and I do have some gripes with the HD update compared to the PS2 version. But overall it's a great game still and plays just as Jen can fun as I remember it. My only issue is that I'm not a big fan of the Final mixes
You are a newer member of the "What Culture gaming" channel right? I mean I did not watch the channel so often but I still like the content. The list in this video is interesting. I would not agree with all your picks but I understand. For example "Goldeneye 007" I loved on N64 and a few months back I played it on the Nintendo Switch and I still think it is an amazing game that I will go back once in a while. Together with my younger cousin because he owns a Nintendo Switch and we do play multiplayer sometimes in "Goldeneye 007" and it is fun for a little while :D For other picks like "Donkey Kong 64" I never really played it that much but still to this day I love watching Let's plays of it. I still love all the "Kingdom Hearts" games. I do have all the remasters on PS4. And I will get into FarCry 3 soon because I have the remaster of it on PS4 as well and I never played any FarCry game but I know how popular it is. And my big cousin has the platinum trophy in it and I want it too because once in a while he always asks me if I finally played it :D I will give this video a like :)
Can't speak for DK64, but Super Mario 64 is still a masterful experience, even compared to modern titles (except the camera). I own Odyssey and I would play Mario 64 any day of the week over it. Mario 64 didn't even deserve to have it's name mentioned on this list.
I never played Farcry 3 until like 2 or 3 years ago thought it was pretty good the story by todays standards. However that's not the game I will disagree with as that just might be me. Uncharted 1 is a must in the series. It's still holds up. And graphics are solid enough that's like say don't go back to Resi 4 as the graphics were terrible I know there is a newer version of the game but it still holds up. Uncharted 1 teaches you how Nate meet Elena and for the 4 games that's a large part of the story their relationship. Not playing that will hit you different when Elena almost dies in 2
@Adam-M- oh no doubt it is an important part of gaming history. Then like 4 years later Halo came out and showed us how to make shooters feel good on console
Jsut rebeat it and the one thing you can’t deny is that it’s an amazing game plus the level design is still to this day some of the best ever. Plus you wouldn’t have fps mutiplayer games if this didn’t pave the way.
Fully agree about Kingdom Hearts. LOVED that game when it came out, was obsessed with all things kingdom hearts and even had Simple and Clean on repeat. I replayed it before KH3 came out and had the same feeling i had when i tried to watch power rangers as an adult
Re: Shadow of the Colossus. As someone who never played the game when it came out, I've tried to get into it at least 4 different times, and I just can't. I'm sure a lot of it still holds up, and some clips from the game look pretty cool, but it definitely belongs on this list. Without the nostalgia, it's a really hard sell.
Lol, I just recently bought Lego Island on PS2 again, basically a set of mini games and a bland world to collect stuff. (Not sure why I loved this so much when it released)
When Kingdom Hearts was rereleased in HD, I went back to play through it again and ended up giving up in the Deep Jungle/Tarzan lever, getting so hopelessly lost in where to go next that the whole experience just wasn't worth continuing. Not only is it bad narratively, the gameplay stinks too nowadays.
I would also include the first Witcher game. Much like the Uncharted series on this list, the first Witcher game was still just stretching its legs before hitting its stride in the subsequent entries, especially the combat.
I feel like if you haven't played a far cry starting on 4 or 6 is preferable. But if you started on 3 go back and play 2. Having played them all 5 and 6 can feel pretty mind numbing but i could see 6 as being a blast for a new player and 4 is imo the best of the new FC games. But if you played 3 and no others go back and play 2 as it's vastly different and plays very well on modern hardware compared to its original release
Great to see so many Kingdom Hearts fans. I love all the games. Kingdom Hearts is in my opinion one of those games that you have to experience and not watch someone on UA-cam doing a lets play.
American McGee's Alice is unplayable nowadays, mostly because of the controls. Kingdom Hearts 2...yeah, I conveniently lost the PS2 disc after finishing with Mulan's world. The first game, though? Well, it's not bad (and I finished it several times) but I might just leave it in my disc folder at this point. lol Haven't played the original Sims game since my teenage years. However, I still play Sims 2 and have fun using ALL the mods/cheats.
1. i got into uncharted late, i started with the vita game, then i went back and played all of them. they all still hold up today, yes the first is alittle clunky but that's like saying "don't play any of the older tomb raider games from legends back because they are clunky". 2. DK 64 was a treat to play, i only recently played it and finished it with not much trouble if I'm honest, i even made sure to finish it twice for a 100% playthrough on my second run (king K Rools last boss fight was not hard by the way guys, he goes invisible sure but watch the shadow thats all)
My first uncharted was the 4th game. My first ps4 was the one that was a limited edition with that game and I just decided to pop it in one day annnnd…I got the collection for ps4 a little bit later
Today I tried playing the first Splinter Cell game again and damn has it aged badly, it seemed and looked much better in my memory from when I played it back in 2005-2006 🙊 I really hope they come with the remake soon.
I remember playing nothing but multiplayer Goldeneye back in the day. I didn't learn there was a campaign until much later... And don't knock the original Shadow of the Colossus; you'll bruise my nostalgia 😊
The game 8 used to play as a kid having to club what it was about was Diggles. I remembered having fun playing this game so I recently decided to buy it again on steam. I had an amazing time replaying it as an adult, being able to understand what it was about. But turned out the game is damaged and every save beyond the first world of progression is crashing the game completely. Shame that Steam is selling a broken game.
My own emtry. Killzone 2. Bought a disc again, pulled out my ps3 about 6 months ago. How did k ever EVER get used to thise controls. Gave me 20 min of nostalgia then i put kt all away.
I played Uncharted 1 for the first time late last year and I loved it. I even got 100% all trophies even beating it on Brutal. I’m in the process of doing the same for part 2 and eventually the series but 2 so far has been just non stop action to the point where it’s just exhausting and at times annoying.
I played far cry three fairly recently and still had fun but one I do agree with is the original uncharted. They definitely need to do something about remastering it or just remaking it
I think the title of this video is misplaced, since I played many of these games as an adult. Shadow of the Colossus is a perfectly fine experience I got to play in 2010 for the first time, many years after it's release, but yeah you might want to plug in your PS2 into a CRT to get a decent image quality for older games.
I feel like im the only gamer who doesnt care about game grafics. I replayed the first sims game a few years ago and it was just as fun as i remember plus im always find myself going back to sims 3 as sims 4 just isnt it for me and i only started playing fc3 last year and im surprised at the graficis for a game that old, it looks good and still plays gooda and would definitely recommend it to anyone if they asked (plus the songs in it are nostalgic)
I’d like to add Silent Hill 2. Freaked me the hell out when I first played it. Tried showing it to a younger family member 7ish years ago, and they were super unimpressed (and so was I, I’m sad to say).
I will not be shamed for enjoying the cheezy goodness of the original Fantastic 4 movies. Also, i will continue to do my complete yearly run of the entire 4 Uncharted games as i love them all dearly...though i do respect those who dont care as much for the original.
Why the dumb clickbait title? Could have just said "8 old games that didn't age well" and I would have still clicked, but also would have been less annoyed.
I honestly completely agree with the 007 one when they came out with the remastered one for the Xbox one I downloaded it and it was exactly the same as the old 007 GoldenEye but it was not nearly as good as I remembered
I would add the first Pokemon games, Red, Blue, and Yellow, to the list. The games haven't aged well with bad type balancing and some areas being a slog to get through, especially Mt. Moon.
They definitely don’t hold up now. FireRed and LeafGreen are the much better Kanto experience. The Let’s Go games are decent as well although they are extremely easy to
As someone who waited for the Steam version and enjoys and enjoys playing the Kingdom Hearts games on PC as an adult, I can savely say that you're very wrong with that one. Waiting for KH4 and Missing Link.
I don't know, Jess...I was late to the Uncharted party. I'm trying to experience it now. Here's the thing. I have nothing to compare it to, Had no expectations, never even attempted it before, so....The first one seems all right so far....sure dated, but not as clunky as i thought it would be at all.
Honestly kingdom hearts 1 and 2 wouldnt be so bad to go back and play if it wasnt for 3 bellyflopping and making the story just so much more convoluted
The mainline Kingdom Hearts games are still great as gameplay goes... the in-between-quels (that are all sadly essential if you want even the vaguest understanding of how the story goes from point A to point B to point CFT/C+DDD to point C).... less so.
Actually I prefer playing old games. Almost all the games I play are on my Xbox 360. To me the the generation of the 360 was the golden age of gaming, 2007-2014 has a huge impact in my life, so much so that modern games bore me, wither they have good graphics, storytelling or not. Old school for life for me.
I've always said people shouldn't play Uncharted and Kingdom Hearts, but that's because I've never liked either series. And the substitute for GoldenEye that plays better but is still vintage is Perfect Dark.
I'm sorry but I absolutely have to disagree with Far Cry 3. Well, half disagree at least. Vas is one of the most interesting and well developed video game villains of all time, And even tho he doesn't end up being the main villain, everyone should definitely play at least the first half of Far Cry 3's story for the interactions with Vas
Far Cry 2 has wonky ai? What?!? It has by far the best ai in the franchise. It was extremely dumbed down for Far Cry 3 (amongst other things like physics, weather effects,...). The ai combined with the usage of archetypes for the enemies made combat rather predictable and not very dynamic.
59 year old woman here. I'll continue to play Far Cry 3 over and over as 3 and 4 are the best out of the series. Loved the radio towers. The series tanked after that. The rest of the games are totally outdated to be sure.

I restarted it a week ago, and although the gameplay loop has aged a bit, it's still incredible with my favorite antagonist out of anything ever

My own emtry. Killzone 2. Bought a disc again, pulled out my ps3 about 6 months ago. How did k ever EVER get used to thise controls. Gave me 20 min of nostalgia then i put kt all away.
Try to go back and play the first 3 Harry Potter games which I played over and over in my childhood but boy oh boy.
I played Uncharted 1 for the first time late last year and I loved it. I even got 100% all trophies even beating it on Brutal. I’m in the process of doing the same for part 2 and eventually the series but 2 so far has been just non stop action to the point where it’s just exhausting and at times annoying.
same i also just finished it last year though it was the ps4 version triple pack it def felt its time but in a good way
I played far cry three fairly recently and still had fun but one I do agree with is the original uncharted.
Vast majority of these came out when I was already an adult. Now I'm sad for being old
When and listened to the DK rap still slaps. I thank you now because it's going be stuck in my head for the next week.
Sadly have to agree with Goldeneye 007, (music still rocks though)
Perfect Dark 64 is still just the superior version of Goldeneye and still playable
Both are playable, as long as you know the controls
I’d like to add Silent Hill 2. Freaked me the hell out when I first played it. Tried showing it to a younger family member 7ish years ago, and they were super unimpressed (and so was I, I’m sad to say).
I have some old PS1 disks and PS2 disks and I want to play them on my PS5 but "Im limited by the technology of my time."
Just played FC3 for the 1st time last year, top 10 best games ever.
Also playing DMC 1 now.
The soundtrack alone makes Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 worth it. The gameplay and characters make it iconic.
I played the GE Remaster for Xbox/Rare Replay and absolutely enjoyed it for what it was. The original though...
You just don't want to admit most of this list are better than most AAA games nowadays
Kinda disappointed that the list wasn't made up of mobile games.
Radio towers were a thing in Far Cry 2 though.
I played all the far cry games as an adult and 3 is still really good
I still play Chocobo’s dungeon 2, Summoner Ps2, Legend of Legaia , Armored Core Ps trillogy, and Persona 2:EP.
Ahh Summoner. That sweet memories. Awesome Story.
I honestly completely agree with the 007 one when they came out with the remastered one for the Xbox one I downloaded it and it was exactly the same as the old 007 GoldenEye but it was not nearly as good as I remembered
You lost me when you said "we're watching revenge of the sith over F4." Not in 2005. Then put KH @ 9. Nope. "CHANGE IT TO THE NEXT ONE!"
Far Cry 3 absolutely still rules. Michael Mando's performance is still worth it.
The Let’s Go games are decent as well although they are extremely easy to
All the games that came out in my childhood was for atari 2600, vic20, and zx81.
As someone who waited for the Steam version and enjoys and enjoys playing the Kingdom Hearts games on PC as an adult, I can savely say that you're very wrong with that one. Waiting for KH4 and Missing Link.
I loved LEGO Studio Backlot. of course the version I played was the demo
I also play the sims 2 alot! My friend still plays the first one it has its charm and it has more difficulty yeah i think there are reasons to go back
Kingdom Hearts totally still holds up! As long as you don't take the story too seriously its still some of the best hack and slash games ever made
I don't know, Jess...I was late to the Uncharted party. I'm trying to experience it now. Here's the thing. I have nothing to compare it to, Had no expectations, never even attempted it before, so....The first one seems all right so far....sure dated, but not as clunky as i thought it would be at all.
All kindom hearts rule who cares if ther silly
Honestly kingdom hearts 1 and 2 wouldnt be so bad to go back and play if it wasnt for 3 bellyflopping and making the story just so much more convoluted
The mainline Kingdom Hearts games are still great as gameplay goes... the in-between-quels (that are all sadly essential if you want even the vaguest understanding of how the story goes from point A to point B to point CFT/C+DDD to point C).... less so.
FarCry 3 is still the best FarCry period. The story was fantastic, the characters were great and the Co-op play was so good.
Request to see your cat at some point sleeping in the cat tree
I still have the 05 version of Shadow still in plastic wrap
Never played the original.
Got the remaster in PS3 and the remake sealed in PS4😅.I will play it one of these days, that's for sure
I've always said people shouldn't play Uncharted and Kingdom Hearts, but that's because I've never liked either series. And the substitute for GoldenEye that plays better but is still vintage is Perfect Dark.
I actually feel like this list should be sent to developers, so they could make good game
I'm sorry but I absolutely have to disagree with Far Cry 3. Well, half disagree at least. Vas is one of the most interesting and well developed video game villains of all time, And even tho he doesn't end up being the main villain, everyone should definitely play at least the first half of Far Cry 3's story for the interactions with Vas
wow..... the first 50s diatribe really speaks volumes on how careful we all have to be now not to hurt anybodys widdle fweelings :-/
