aaaaah, the good old days
i started playing drums about five years ago and after a year and a half of playing i discovered this dvd and paradigm shiftand it was WOOOAAAAH and today when i see some of this videos i think to myself, such a good days :D
this is actually easy to play really, nothing technically difficult, just fast :)
That kick drum sounds beautiful!
Honestly don't see where people see him as an egotistical douchebag, at least here. Maybe when he says "I don't mean to pat myself on the back..." but he obviously was joking around and doesn't act like that. I've met Mike and he's very approachable, friendly, and easy to talk to, and he also doesn't hold himself to as high of a standard as Peart, Bonham, etc. Same with people saying he's overrated, of course he isn't extremely technical and whatnot but he writes good music, he plays what's appropriate for the song, and has a good feel to his playing. There are some superfans and others that think he's the best, but that's a minority. He's a hell of a drummer and he is rated perfectly.
Smittywerbenjager Manjensen hhjjj
It's basically idiots who have never touched an instrument in their lives suffering from an identity crisis and inferiority complex. There are some bashing portnoy for his supposed lack of technical prowess and some bashing mangini for supposedly being a robot. Both of them are master drummers. Sadly people who don't have enough credentials to tie their shoelaces have way too much to criticize about them.
mike is the best drummer ever
Mike is a great teacher!
Agree
i'll be waiting man
I love his kit(s).
Mestre nos Tambores!
i think mike joins technique and creativity thats unique
Who cares who the better drummer is, they all bring their own style and flavour to the drumming world and all deserve recognition in heir own ways.
Digging the shoes
the best !
i love mike
Hayrul Gengster not as much as Mike loves Mike
THIS IS SPARTA!!!
I am a drummer who plays dream theater and blink-182 not to mention rush, iron maiden and some other styles. There is some blink-182, dream theater and rush songs I can play almost to a T but there is also a lot that I can't play. Travis plays with some much intensity and emotion and has a lot of stage presence. I would say a lot of non musicians think he is better then he is, but he is not over rated, and certainly he is talented. Mike, Neil and Travis are my biggest influences.
God do we need LTE 3 or what.
Yes 😉
@Layskrazy I think it's more about the great combination of the intro (rudimentary simple, per se, but quick none the less) with the rest of the band. Like he said, starting strong with the unison.
I do it all the time.
pretty standard for portnoy, especially. i've always thought his skill was mostly in the groove and his ability to work within odd time signatures and crazy arrangements. his fills are almost always that top/bottom alternating or some variant of it.
@aakkoin
Nicely put.
I've done this score
@DTxOctavariumx
There are two ways to spell it. I know they spell it theater, but they play in Great Brittan far more often than the states ;-)
MARCO!!!!!
Back then, he didn't had that much tattoo's compared with today
Alain Mulder well you're a smart cookie aren't you?
@TheMadPiper3 he came up with it on the spot. doesn't mean that no one else has ever played it before him.
@tao1986 Actually, it might be a Melody Master. He has 2 diff types of them. A wood one, and a Metal one!
So it could very well be his metal
I understood that.
@explodingpimp hahah you obviously haven't heard his whole catalog cause he has come up with some amazing fills, time signatures, patterns etc. This video is amature compared to what he can do. I admit he is not the best but he is damn good without a doubt. Check out Dance Of Eternity or A Change Of Seasons.
Does anyone have a drumless track of this song i cant find it anywhere!!!!!
i went to thepark today
agreed
dat snare
He's an amazing drummer, that's undeniable. He's also a tool, that can't be ignored either. Ego is as vast as his skills.
Brent Sellow Now he is a Christian rock musician hahaha.
Fiends4 lol guess it can happen to the best of us
+Fiends4 I think nobody woundt complain if plays with Neal Morse
I certainly wouldn't apply the term "amazing" when thinking about his drumming or sound. Tools is apt though.
Whats the song at 0:03 please ?
good
hes with A7X now! :D
@getsomemates69 Actually its Niel Peart
@SirMetalGH well the rev's fav drummer was portnoy so im sure a lot of the revs drumming is based on him
@ExtinctHermit Haha, thanks!
@JazzyJonas Yeah i know that. But spell it like they do.
i'm quessing this is just a snippet. If you want more, you go buy the DVD
@pwny6000 because que is one of the best and most inspiring drummers in history?
@tonidrummerlive Concordo, mas com vontade tudo se faz
@ISAAXx15 that's a camera braniac
True story.
@Savafan313 I believe he can, actually.
0:23 Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, Tony Levin...Who in this freaking world would think they where "messing around"?
Dude, i want his kick pedal and drum.
@physco1997 Yep, it's definitely one of the smaller ones he's used. And the fact that he's just as technically proficient on this small drumset as he is on his bigger sets proves that having a bigger kit doesn't make you less talented (I hate it when people say that it does). I'm pretty sure it's the drummer, not the kit.
dat neck !
Wow, he looks better with short hair, and he is better then before!
he likes bollywood actor with style like that..
HAHAHA!
You can tell by the way he drums that he was influenced by Mr. Peart.
any other drummers find humming while playing helps keep you on time?
I like to play to melodies, yea
Mike Portnoy's favourite drummer is .....Mike Portnoy
oh oh oh you beefin
@getsomemates69 I think it was Neil Peart, but I'm sure he likes to "pat himself on the back" every now and then!
@t2klilt keyboards make it sound that way, yah?
I hate wen ppl say mike is better than the Rev or the Rev is better than Mike Portnoy. Its a simple fact that mike and rev or two different style drummers, its like Comparing one brand of pop to a brand of Shoes, it dosent make scence, Their both amazeing drummers From the ideas on the set, their skills, and even the way they interacted with their bands. And i also hate wne ppl say mike is an ok drummer hes not ok HES AMAZEING. And i dont wana see ok or good I WANA GREAT AND AMAZEING AND FUCKENA
@explodingpimp
Is it? Think about it
@Rabje1234 somebody's time of the month
@Rabje1234 TELL EM!
Travis Barker is not overated. He is very over the top, perhaps, and people who don't know drumming reference him as the best far too often, but his technical skill is very good.
why is he using his left drumstick upside down?
to get more power
Added power, Nicko McBrain from Maiden does the same thing.
@ermonski it wants you too
@pwny6000 because he has a ton of money and he plays for plenty renown artists
It's actually Mastodons drummer.
check out some videos here on you tube on guys who should be on top. but are not. got guys playing just with tin cans and still grove a beat. a lot of unknown talent out there. but still there those guys with skill. who really just stood behind the scene . and there are guys who got least of skills. are not afraid to show em. but still they all start from nothing.
@SgtPeppers196714 well, it's a matter of opinion actually, but to me groove and feel is more important than the kind of technical blandness portnoy represents. A player can be technically supergood, but sound like a machine... both bonham and harrison have the kind of great dynamic musical approach to phrasing and groove, when portnoy has just few old tricks.. my personal favorite is bill bruford :)
If you don’t think portnoy can groove you just haven’t listened to enough of his work
@DTxOctavariumx
Certainly, sir. Didn't mean to offend.
0:22 he farted and tried to make it look like nothing happened !
@gitchigoomi well.. that's just sad 'cause in all honesty, seeing Dream Theater live at least once is something that i would recommend to any prog metal or rock fan or any musician. You're just going to miss on the best live performance (musicianship-wise.. don't expect fireworks) you could see imho. With or without MP as the drummer.
@JazzyJonas First spell theater right. kkthxbai
@MrTeslasRevenge but Peart a bit more because he's Canadian
1:14 "the most immediate thing that comes in you mind is.- WHERE THE FUCK IS YOUR CASTLE KIT" :P
lol
lol, dammit you are so funny
it's amazing
nice joke dude
SMOKE IN THE SPLASH CYMBAL 0:51?
He hummed a little, I thought that I was the only one
@akuro123 Umad?
vai sabê... até provar o contrário, se tem razão...
"if i could could plz get just a teensy more frawsting up top??? thatd be grayyyt..."
wow he needs both feet to do those doubles?
Portnoy primarily plays singles
@imjotoboy1 How does that pertain to his playing? Either way, karma is nonexistent.
@metalmike83 Look man... I understand what your saying. MP is a busy man, and he had a clinic to do, & he probably was pressed for time. However there is a way to decline an autograph (espically to a little kid that idolized him) without being a complete a-hole...you know?
Like I said...I respect MP A LOT as a rock-drummer/musician.
But I think he is over hyped, & there is a lot of jazz drummers that MP couldn't light a candle next to. Like Mike Clark. (check out "Actual Proof" by Herbie H. )
@realdrummer110 And you will continue to not get anywhere commenting on every single video of Mike Portnoy
@paradiddlepedro Lol Its cool.... im used to getting ripped on over my wounderful spelling skills.
@MrTeslasRevenge Then you've NEVER seen Gavin Harrison!
@metalmike83 We were at his drum clinic in Ney York. When my friend's son asked for an auto, he said in a VERY rude way "NOT UNTIL AFTER THE CLASS!"
My friend was about to clean his clock right then and there, but I said "Fuck him, let's split."
Don't get me wrong...I respect him as a player, and I'm not saying you have to be humble....but at LEAST be somewhat polite.
Portnoy and Malmstien should go out bowling together.
you dont need to use double bass drum in that "fill" which is nothing special, just it has some speed
+P-tom Richi Double stroke on one foot is always slightly weaker than the double hit by two feet, regardless the two strokes are even or not
@MrTeslasRevenge buddy rich keith moon ? and soon dominic howard ;)
LOL was it his body language that gave it away!
You people keep listing meh drummers. JOHN BOHNAM. Enough said.
@GodzzXdrums
mike johnston could do that with one hand and one foot
i wonder if he knows that he is holding one of his sticks backwards?
Liquid Tension Experiment > Dream Theatre
Yes Portnoy; you're a shiny golden god. I'm sure you came up with all of that on the spot. You know, the patterns remind me of something, oh yes: Neal Peart, who was doing this 30 years before you.
Portnoy is the biggest Peart fan. He knows he’s indebted to Peart lol
@2Emos1Razor Lol, Cause I don't need to give reasons. Bonham is a power, speed, grove, and improve drummer who's fills cause one's spine to tingle. Portnoy is good, but compared to Bonham not so much.
@MrTeslasRevenge *coughBonhamcough* =)
it's hard to compare gavin to portnoy because they come from two different worlds. Portnoy is from earth and Gavin is obviously an alien.
