Honestly don't see where people see him as an egotistical douchebag, at least here. Maybe when he says "I don't mean to pat myself on the back..." but he obviously was joking around and doesn't act like that. I've met Mike and he's very approachable, friendly, and easy to talk to, and he also doesn't hold himself to as high of a standard as Peart, Bonham, etc. Same with people saying he's overrated, of course he isn't extremely technical and whatnot but he writes good music, he plays what's appropriate for the song, and has a good feel to his playing. There are some superfans and others that think he's the best, but that's a minority. He's a hell of a drummer and he is rated perfectly.

It's basically idiots who have never touched an instrument in their lives suffering from an identity crisis and inferiority complex. There are some bashing portnoy for his supposed lack of technical prowess and some bashing mangini for supposedly being a robot. Both of them are master drummers. Sadly people who don't have enough credentials to tie their shoelaces have way too much to criticize about them.

I am a drummer who plays dream theater and blink-182 not to mention rush, iron maiden and some other styles. There is some blink-182, dream theater and rush songs I can play almost to a T but there is also a lot that I can't play. Travis plays with some much intensity and emotion and has a lot of stage presence. I would say a lot of non musicians think he is better then he is, but he is not over rated, and certainly he is talented. Mike, Neil and Travis are my biggest influences.

@Layskrazy I think it's more about the great combination of the intro (rudimentary simple, per se, but quick none the less) with the rest of the band. Like he said, starting strong with the unison.

pretty standard for portnoy, especially. i've always thought his skill was mostly in the groove and his ability to work within odd time signatures and crazy arrangements. his fills are almost always that top/bottom alternating or some variant of it.

@physco1997 Yep, it's definitely one of the smaller ones he's used. And the fact that he's just as technically proficient on this small drumset as he is on his bigger sets proves that having a bigger kit doesn't make you less talented (I hate it when people say that it does). I'm pretty sure it's the drummer, not the kit.

Its a simple fact that mike and rev or two different style drummers, its like Comparing one brand of pop to a brand of Shoes, it dosent make scence, Their both amazeing drummers From the ideas on the set, their skills, and even the way they interacted with their bands. And i also hate wne ppl say mike is an ok drummer hes not ok HES AMAZEING. And i dont wana see ok or good I WANA GREAT AND AMAZEING AND FUCKENA

@SgtPeppers196714 well, it's a matter of opinion actually, but to me groove and feel is more important than the kind of technical blandness portnoy represents. A player can be technically supergood, but sound like a machine... both bonham and harrison have the kind of great dynamic musical approach to phrasing and groove, when portnoy has just few old tricks.. my personal favorite is bill bruford :)

@metalmike83 Look man... I understand what your saying. MP is a busy man, and he had a clinic to do, & he probably was pressed for time. However there is a way to decline an autograph (espically to a little kid that idolized him) without being a complete a-hole...you know?
    Like I said...I respect MP A LOT as a rock-drummer/musician.
But I think he is over hyped, & there is a lot of jazz drummers that MP couldn't light a candle next to. Like Mike Clark. (check out "Actual Proof" by Herbie H. )

My friend was about to clean his clock right then and there, but I said "Fuck him, let's split."
Don't get me wrong...I respect him as a player, and I'm not saying you have to be humble....but at LEAST be somewhat polite.
Portnoy and Malmstien should go out bowling together.
