- From Tama's Out Of The Box And Onto The Stage VHS, which also featured Kenny Aronoff and John Tempesta. This was released in 1999, although it's conceivable it was filmed in 1998.
My first drum set, Tama Swing Star, came with a DVD with this same video on it. I was amazed by Mike Portnoy then and became a huge Dream Theater fan ever since. Thanks, Mike!!
Yeah, same here😁
My Swingstar's a newer model, and second hand. Have had it now for about 10, 12 years and it still sounds amazing!
@@Swedish_Drummer Great effing set!
I'm not even a drummer, but for some reason I'm up at midnight watching this video with some decent headphones. Excellent upload!
The first " new " drum set I ever had. Watched this VHS into the ground. Man time flies!
It’s almost comforting to hear the slight out of time moments (very few and far between ) cause like you realize it’s just a dude behind a kitshowing people how to play like this is not produced or anything. It’s human. I love that for some reason. Today I finally came to Hawaii to put into words how I know how to play the drums.. I kind of put it like need a decoder to communicate… I don’t know certain random words of any sentence given to me… but as long as I know who it’s from I can decode it.. .. lol does this make sense to n e one else. My practice has been finally catching up with me. I realized earlier today I was like wow I’m actually getting a lot better recently. Very encouraging after putting it down for a while.
I think this was the last year of Mike's drinking before he went sober. Hi has the demeanor of a hungover guy or someone who's going thru withdrawal. No smiling, no nothing. Flat voice dynamic. He's not usually like this. Good he got out of the juice and dope!!
He used to have a more friendly approach back in the days.
Dude I love MP in this era.. n man I love playing drums.. that Chris and Kevin’s excellent adventure beat literally taught me how to play ghost notes
This is Mike Portnoy that I ever know, not today.
13:24 Rosanna! (Sort of)
Jeff porcaro pattern
Shuffle groove Jeff Porcaro
Tama = ❤
17:06 that's sounds like Trumpets of Jericho by Bruce Dickinson. Interesting!

best drummer in history.... i had the honor to play with him at the egde of
the stage live in 97 (i think).. or maybe 98... somewhere around there....😁😁🤟🤟
@@melodic777 you do know its a matter of opinion, right!??!... and yes i do know lots and lots of drummers... of course i do
Uncalled for, melodic777. Portnoy is a competent drummer, so what's wrong with someone else regarding him as their favorite? I get way too many commenters like this, needlessly inciting arguments where there don't need to be any.
@@DTArchive dont feed the trolls...
@@AnnWahlquist Ann: if you don't mind saying, where was the show where you got to participate in Portnoy's drum solo? That would be cool if I could dig up a recording of that.
Decir que portnoy es el mejor de la historia es igual a afirmar que estamos solos en el universo. 😊
He could start doing this kind of videos again
The only drummer in my opinion that was very influenced by Neil but took it somewhere else.
so that's where that groove at 13:23 that we all know as an intro for some videos originated in the first place hu...
Bello/Magnifico.😮😮😮😮😮😮🥵
This came with My Rockstar custom kit 2000
Looks like Remo Pinstripes on the toms of his tour kit.
I have never seen Mike in long pants before, and definitely not in blue jeans!
I didn't know Zach Galifianakis played drums!
Splash zildjian.. Uppss

pike mortnoy
you can tell he was still using back then
Using what? :)
Why would you comment this? Mind your business
This isn’t a surprise to anybody, so why comment it? We know Mike had an alcohol problem. He’s past that now
