    Fantastic! Thanks! You just taught a 65 year old lady how to do this, although all I want is to retrieve my cd's stuck in my player and get it working again. Good job one handed! Now I have to make my hubby watch this. The original stereo I thought is great. I hope it still works after we do this!

    Great video on how to remove and reinstall the dashboard cowl. One caveat ... if your Dakota only has 2 doors, then there will be a passenger airbag on/off switch in the cowl. I recommend disconnecting the battery and turning the headlights on to discharge any capacitors before disconnecting or reconnecting the airbag switch.

      Dang. That's the situation I'm facing with my 2004 Two-Door Regular Cab Dodge Dakota. I will disconnect the battery and leave the headlights on, but wondered if I could simply leave the AirBag switch connected and simply "roll my radio/instrument panel over" (towards me) in that area on the right. Was nervous the AirBags would suddenly deploy if plugged back in the switch connector.

    Thanks for the video... I did mine today, 2004 Dakota.
    Wire gauges appear to typically be AWG 18 on both the included harness and the one to convert to vehicle harness. So 22-18 AWG butt splicers.

      It did not. I have a similar video for my old 2004 Grand Cherokee that did have the factory amp and premium sound, so that video may help you out. my deck came with one yellow one red and one black but the aftermarket harness I bought from the electrical store had 2 yellows, 2 blacks and 1 red I shit you not, never seen that in my life so I just connected all of them and it works just fine but this is honestly a really helpful video thumbs up, I'm trying to install subs in my 02 dodge Dakota SLT but I can't find a spot to run power from my battery to my amp would anyone have any suggestions ?

    • @TonyTheTruckGuy
      @TonyTheTruckGuy  9 років тому +2

      +connor hourie as long as all the yellows are together and all the reds and all the blacks you should be fine. As far as running power, the easiest way is to buy a kit from Kicker or something that has an inline fuse holder and then connect that to your positive battery terminal and you can usually find a place in the firewall on the drivers side where there's either an existing hole or a rubber grommet you could poke a hole through and run the cable in down by your feet then pull the plastic floor edging up and run the cable under that to where ever you have the subs. The floor method is also a good way to run the signal wire from your deck to your amp. As far as a ground just run one from the amp to a rear seat bolt or something along those lines as long as it's a good, clean ground.

  • @robertt251

    So I'm going to be installing a radio in my Dakota for the first time so this video was great thanks! Just one question, about those black grounding wires. Did you just connect them together or did you ground them to the vehicle?

    • @TonyTheTruckGuy
      @TonyTheTruckGuy  9 років тому

      If you have a black wire to connect it to, then connect it to that. If the vehicle harness side has no black wire then you need to ground the deck harness side black wire to something metal.

    Fyi for the Infinity System:
    I was able to get a cheap amazon unit to play nice with the infinity amplifier by using the "accessory" output to send the turn on signal to the infinity amp. Be warned, the colors are different! • @TonyTheTruckGuy
      @TonyTheTruckGuy  6 років тому

      Unfortunately you normally don’t pick up a lot of bass with just speakers and a radio, generally you need at least an amp to notice much of a difference but you will notice some different over stock. I haven’t replaced too many speakers but I’ve installed a set of Alpine and a set of Pioneer, they didn’t seem to have much punch. I’d try like some Sony xplode or kenwood, maybe Rockford punch.

      17:31-8:20. If you got the adapter for the radio like I did, I just spliced the black ground wire to that and it worked. Otherwise you need to ground the wire to something metal in the truck that is grounded like the dash frame that I pointed out.

      @coquis1023 8 років тому

      thanks for the reply,
      yes, everything was plugged back normal, my truck is 2x4 so only 3 cables were unplugged, the headlights/internal light/dim switch/cargo light works, except that the main headlights come on automatically once the truck is turned on, there is no way to control on/off from the switch even with the truck off, the switch should turn on/off the lights, but in my case, they stopped working.....very strange....

    • @TonyTheTruckGuy
      @TonyTheTruckGuy  8 років тому

      J R - First thing I would do is unplug the radio to rule out any issues from the install. If you're still having issues, I'd venture to guess your headlight relay or headlight switch went out. It's a smaller possibility but the turn signal switch could potentially be causing that issue as well, since the high beams run through it and it's technically a "multi-function" switch.

      Black goes to black and if there isn't another black to connect then just ground the single black one to something metal.

      The power wire just has to touch anything metal to fry a circuit and cause an unrelated problem just because an individual thought the need for caution could be excused because you didn't "plan on 2 wires touching!" Also if it's -20 your hands are gonna be less effective therefore you are more likely to make a mistake dealing with small cramped areas and small wires. Just sayin.
