This only works if you live in an area with excellent thrifting. There's no way I could "curate" my closet- I buy what I find because I live in an area where the pickings are slim.

The marketplace is endless. There's room for success for all of us! I love having so many choices of buying and selling. I'm so grateful for the knowledge shared by successful poshers like you. 👍♥️ Thank you.

I have to say I don’t necessarily agree with this unless you have a larger closet and an established customer base. For smaller closets I think this would detrimental as it would seriously limit potential customers. I think this is great for you, and it’s obviously working as your what sold videos are always amazing!! But for me, I will continue with my random (good still good brands) AF closet lol

I think your videos are awesome. I do not do posh mark but I love watching what you thrift, sell and just listening to your business sense. I think you have a huge future. You’re focused and think about your customer. For being so young I’m impressed. Good luck in your endeavors.

This made Great sense! Right now my closet is all over the place ! I want to take the time and go thru my inventory to see what is not working for me now ! Your analogy of picking a store that would be my personality is a Great way to think about it ! Right now I think my closet would be Goodwill ! Lol ! A little it of everything !

I love this, probably because it's also how I approach my business! I am interested in a customer who is between 35-50, working outside the home, who wants to buy items that are on trend in terms of cut, color, and style, but not "trendy." I am not into fast flipping (though my items can sell within a day of listing) and so source items in super quality fabrics that sell in the range of 50-100.00. I don't necessarily buy by label, more by quality. My sales are consistent--about 100 per month--and, more to the point, I really enjoy sourcing the items in my closet. When I first started I too bought whatever others said was selling, but found that I really hate to shop for things like jeans, or the graphic tees you sell so well (!), so I decided to stay true to my brand knowing that the right customer would find me. This has made my business such fun! Love your videos.

You're proof, you can do whatever you set your mind to. Thrifting in small town Southern Alabama is a challenge for sure. That makes the hunt even sweeter when a quality garment is found. I'll be opening a closet soon, nothing fancy lol, but clean and in very good condition.

Yes!!! This is the natural progression my mind has been moving towards over in my second year full time reselling. It is so much more fun to have a unique to me Ebay store, the treasure hunting is much more enjoyable, rather than seeking the same items as all the other resellers in my sourcing locations. I love the way your mind works, and you are a huge business inspiration to us all!!! 💕💕💕💕💕

Jenna! I have to tell you! I’m not a reseller and I am Canadian so I can’t shop your closet... but I have lost tons of weight in 2018 thanks to dieting and exercise and I have been looking for my style since no longer being plus size opened a wide variety of clothing I never been able or had the confidence to rock. I am so happy that I have your youtube channel because I am so soooo inspired by your personal style, thrift hauls and what sold videos and they really helped discovering my own style that I absolutely love now!! So I wanted yo thank you! (I apologize if my writing is a bit hard to read, I am french speaking)

I have honed my aesthetic and still working on it. I just don’t like certain things so I don’t enjoy working if it’s not reflective of my style and lifestyle. It makes sense to me. People will come back to your shop because they know what they’re going to find and that’s what they want. I have favorited shops on Poshmark and they’re curated and specific. That’s why I follow them so I can purchase and continue to purchase from them because I know they’re going to carry the items I like as oppose to going on a wild goose chase and searching in the search bar

This is great information! I think it's important to experiment too! I've picked up items that I was sure would sell but they sat in my closet for months; on the flipside I've picked up other things that I didn't think I would get much for or maybe it wasn't a good purchase but they sell super quick!

Hey Jenna! I am currently in the process of curating my closet. I've been on Poshmark since 2016 but I've only really been serious about selling for the past maybe six months. I feel like my journey started off kind of like yours. I started selling my items and then I just started picking up things that I thought was cute now I'm really learning and honing in on high profit brands as well as trying to create a theme in my closet so I can get repeat customers. So seeing your video this morning was confirmation I believe that I'm on the right track. I live in a small town in Missouri and I normally have to drive anywhere from an hour to three hours to find good inventory. Do you find all of your inventory from thrift stores or do you also shop for inventory online? Your closet is beautiful and all of those anthropology shirts, especially the ones new with tags is crazy. LOL. Just wondering if you really find those type of items at your area thrift stores. My husband's family lives in Flowery Branch Georgia and every now and then we will go thrifting down there but I haven't been thrifting down there since I started learning high profit brands. Really excited about Thrifting down there now that I know what brands to look for. Thanks so much for your helpful videos.

I’m trying to do this right now! When I started out doing this I was picking up brands just because it was a high end brand or a Posh party brand & wasn’t really looking at the comps or the style of it. I felt annoyed every time I had to relist these items & like I made a bad buy which is not okay. I decided to drop my prices to try & move them out which sucked because I ended up not making money on the item & my closet really started to attract lowballers. I’m taking a step back right now & just really slowing down to look at who I want my customer to be, what’s on trend & comps. I’ve also changed where I go thrifting & the things I pick up because I want a buyer to look at my closet & be wowed I don’t want them to look at a sea of black & brown items which I also felt like my closet was becoming. I’m a bit scared now because my prices are going to go up but I’m hoping with time it will payoff. I was also wrapping my items in tissue paper with twine around it with a personalized note (someone gave me a 1 for this on packaging 😒) & am going to stop doing this because it really slows my process down. Currently in the process of ordering personalized brand stickers & have the poly mailers. Thanks so much for all your tips you are a blessing!!

Thanks Jenna, I really appreciate all the help and education you give. The curated closet makes sense but I am curious about the data on Posh shoppers. Like how do people shop? What percentage put in a brand search term and what percentage go to a person's closest for a particular style? If I found a shirt I liked I would search it and try and find the best price (unless I was making a bundle). Is that data available anywhere?

Thank you sooo much for sharing your expertise! I am just starting to research all of this in preparation for selling on Poshmark. Here's the bit of a conundrum I have...I am not in the generation that is extremely tech savvy so that aspect of it makes me think I need to hook up with a younger gal to help me with that part, however, I have been thrifting and collecting vintage for 40+ years!! Not just vintage but I have always had an "en trende" style sense and as I have watched the latest Runway trends I realize I have all of them in my collection of things I want to sell. I do not have the ridiculous looks that no one in their right mind would step out of the house in created and marketed by "style terrorists"😉! My things go from the 40's to the 70's, then on into the current looks that are often a throw back to those earlier eras. I haven't even gone to Poshmark yet to look at Jenna' s closet but here is one question I have...
I love to put together whole outfits (I was somewhat of a "stylist" in the music biz before that was even a job description) and with all the items in my collection/
inventory, I wonder if you can put your items together to create a cohesive outfit? Tops, pants or skirts, belts, scarves, shoes or boots...
I realize a buyer might not want all of them but that has always been my "signsture
style" putting it all together even tho it came from thrift stores and rarely purchased at the same time! I love the "boho" look which is very much a throw back to the 60's, 70's, love the artsy, creative vibe, also true vintage jackets worn with today's skinny jeans, bells, hi-rise (don't like the term "Mom Jeans"😉, sounds "dowdy/dumpy!) also with softer pants/trousers. TMI, but all that to say/ask, is there a niche for the pulled together looks I love and have amassed for decades. I still wear some of it but now that I'm no longer in the music biz full time (still writing songs tho) I'd love to see my treasures go to a good home!
Hope to get a reply even if not from Jenna, she has to be busier than a one armed paper hanger😉👍! Thx!!

I so love this video! I just started reselling in April so it hasn't even been a year and I have too many listings to store and the items are all over the place. I also find I dont enjoy the listing process if I dont love the item. So I'm curating my closet for 2019 into what I love florals tropical pretty colors in dresses skirts tops and accessories. I'm going to stop sourcing brands that everyone says sells because I buy them and they sit. How do you recommend reducing your closet size to your brand? I have like 1400 items! Too much of everything. Its overwheming.

Yesterday I was just thinking how I have never had one repeat customer even though I have a 95% rate of five star ratings and I honestly feel like it's because I don't have a curated closet because I have random items in my closet people are coming and buying a one-off item. I know they're not going to come back because I don't have multiple items in a style that they would like or prefer so that's why I don't get repeat customers.

    • @dzire03
      @dzire03 5 років тому +13

Mommyof2 You’ve never heard of building a target market? it’s pretty odd to claim that this strategy isn’t smart when she is as successful as she is. The concept is fairly elementary in retail e-commerce in general. If one wants to run their reselling business like a garage sale, then this doesn’t matter. But if you care about building a brand and gaining all of the benefits of having an actual brand (return customers higher sale prices, inspiring word of mouth recommendations, etc) curation matters. H&M does it, Free People does it, Zara does it, Nike does it, I could go on. The most successful retail businesses do not try to appeal to everyone. They figure out their core market and build out the brand from there. Some retail businesses are more niche than others, but successful ones are always thinking about their target customer first and foremost, and curating their offerings to meet his or her needs and wants. It’s only in reseller land that the concept is so new or strange. This doesn’t mean that no one else can shop there or that the brand can’t test or experiment with different products, it just means that their target customer is always top priority in such decisions.
If you wanted to buy running shoes or sporting gear, you probably have at least one store in mind to check. If you wanted to buy bedding, or home decor you probably have certain stores in mind. If you wanted to buy a new laptop or iPad, you probably have a store in mind. If you wanted super fast shipping that’s free, you probably have a store in mind. That’s branding. The stores that are top of mind for you when you need something specific have built that “know, like, and trust” factor that makes you think of them first when you need something in that niche. That’s branding. It matters.

@@dzire03 "If one wants to run their reselling business like a garage sale" lol, how condescending. "But if you care about building a brand and gaining all of the benefits of having an actual brand (return customers higher sale prices, inspiring word of mouth recommendations, etc) curation matters" At the end of the day all that matters is the money. The bottom line is you don't need a bunch of return customers to be successful in reselling and having a curated closet does not guarantee higher sale prices. "The most successful retail businesses do not try to appeal to everyone". Retail businesses that appeal to everyone are not individual brands, they're called department stores and they definitely make more money than stand-alone stores that only cater to a specific type of customer. Nordstrom makes more money than Free People. They're apples and oranges.

@@mamitachocolate Lol. You aren't clear on how branding works, and perhaps even what a brand is. Nordstrom is a brand. Walmart is a brand. Target is a brand. They all have target audiences. They are all curating the products and brands they sell based on WHO their target customers are. There are certain products you will never see in Nordstrom, because they understand curation. Department stores (using your fitting example lol) have buyers whose job is literally to find products that they feel will best serve THEIR specific customers. This is only news to resellers lol. You are using a strawman argument and comparing apples and oranges by using Free People vs Nordstrom in your reply. So let's compare apples and apples, shall we? The woman who shops for her and her family's clothing at Nordstrom is different than the woman who shops for her and her family's clothing at Burlington. The people who shop primarily at Target are different than the people who shop primarily at Walmart. The focus of a brand's target customer could be could be many things. But there is still a focus. And brands use that focus to draw their customers in. That's the point. People are seriously missing the forest for the trees here.

@@dzire03 Of course department stores are still brands who target customers but within that brand is an array of different styles, sizes, etc. That's my point. A store that sells clothing of all styles for people of all sizes and ages is not less focused than a store that only sells western wear. In Nordstrom you will find brands that do western styles, brands that do boho styles, brands that do preppy styles, etc. Curation to the point of only offering up one extremely specific niche type of item is not necessary in reselling and doesn't mean you'll make more money.

@@mamitachocolate You don't need to be as curated as Jenna is to have a brand, but branding does matter, whether people want to admit it or not. My point is also that the idea that branding is "too limiting" is overly simplistic to the point of being inaccurate. Your favorite brands are curating, some more than others (which I have said now multiple times), but they are still curating. So this notion that curation isn't valuable is bewildering. You don't need branding to make sales as a reseller but good branding means that many of your sales can happen with less work. Why? Because you have people who are purchasing items from you not because they found them in a one off general poshmark search, but because they are returning specifically to your store to just to browse. If two people are making the same amount of money in sales, but one of them is sharing half as much because they have a larger return customer base, or because they've built a brand that drives more direct traffic to their store, that person is much better off. The benefit of that should be very obvious.
